Our Executive Director of Education in Mind Your Body

The VSS InBox

A reader saw Yeow’s interview in Mind Your Body and wrote in to VSS. We especially like the last line in the email.

Hi,

I read the newspaper and there was mention of dates and figs. Can you kindly let me know where to buy these items?

Do you also hold classes on how to prepare smoothies? …

Best of all, Mr Loh looks healthy even without consuming meat.

Yeow wrote back:

I buy nuts, seeds, dried fruits like dates/figs... from Bugis, Blk 270, Queens St, #03-85, Albert Centre [tel 6336 0277]. Of course, there are many other shops selling similar stuff. There are 4 kinds of figs... the black ones [sun dried] are better. The brownish ones may be sulphur dried. Same for apricots.

We have no plans to hold regular classes. However, we do smoothie workshops for schools or other organisations.

We’re hoping to do a simple video to put on the website, but we’re not sure when we can find the time. Perhaps, you can keep a lookout in our newsletter?

Besides the good energy this diet can provide, the high anti-oxidant level is also good for anti-stress and anti-aging.

Glad to help and thanks so much for the interest : )

p.s. – figs contain potassium, fibre, tryptophan (for sleep), calcium.

Vegan Snowboarding Olympic Medallist Helps African Village

Hannah Teeter is a vegan Olympic medalist in snowboarding. Plus, she also donates major money to help a village in Africa. Here’s a quote from a recent interview:

“I feel stronger than I've ever been, mentally, physically, and emotionally. My plant-based diet has opened up more doors to being an athlete. It's a whole other level that I'm elevating to. I stopped eating animals about a year ago, and it's a new life. I feel like a new person, a new athlete”.

Are You Getting Enough Vitamin D?

We’ve been reading – for example, at http://www.veganhealth.org/articles/bones#vitD - that many people, veg and non-veg, lack sufficient vitamin D. What about in sunny Singapore? We asked a local vegetarian health professional, Dr Ho Soon Lye. Here’s what Dr Ho said.

1. Why is vitamin D, specifically D3, so important?

The ABCDE of vitamin D3:

(A) The effect on the auto-immune diseases--vitamin D is being used for treating lupus, where it tampers the over-activity of the immune system, by suppressing it. If the immune system is down, it will push it up. It modulates the immune system.

(B) The action on bone, for osteomalacia, osteopenia and osteoporosis.

(C) The effect on cancer and also on cardiovascular diseases, e.g., stroke, heart diseases, hypertension. It helps in cell differentiation and maturation, and cuts down cell proliferation in malignancy. It slows abnormal apoptosis.

(D) The role it plays in some way to prevent dementia, and diabetes mellitus type I, and possibly, type II.

(E) The effect it has on skeletal muscle- we feel stronger in the muscles, and on the nervous system when we are more alert and we feel less fatigue. It has a role in helping depression. It energises.

2. What can do to get enough vitamin D?

The sun gives sunlight every day without fail and without charge. How many people really appreciate the sun? We should be grateful to the sun. The portion (UV 290-315nm) of the light spectrum shines on our human skin and generates vitamin D3; and a full exposure (in a white body) of 15-30 minutes will make about 10,000 to 50,000iu, enough to meet an individual daily need.

Generally, I like to make two general principles:

(1) The production of vitamin D3 is inversely proportional to the density of the skin pigmentation, the area and the amount of the time the skin surface is exposed to the sun.

(2) The production of vitamin D3 is inversely proportional to the age of the individual. This rule applies to those especially after the age of forty, when, as a rule, aging starts.

So, the best way to get enough vitamin D is to expose our skin to the sunlight or artificial UV light. We do not get enough because we wear clothes and use umbrellas on sunny days. Thousands of Singaporeans are in danger of being insufficient or/and deficient in vitamin D because of our lifestyle. Most food is poor in vitamin D; so, the next best option, other than sunlight, is to take supplements.

As stated in response to the first question above, being insufficient or/and deficient in vitamin D has serious consequences. This state of vitamin D inadequacy in the world is being called a pandemic.

In short, welcome gladly the light of the sun and walk in the sun when the opportunity permits, or resort to ingesting vitamin D supplements.

Report from JB

A VSS member sent the following about a surprise finding in JB.

We occasionally head down to Johor Bahru for shopping and with the OPC scheme having been tweaked recently to include full-day use on Saturdays, we went over last Saturday. Our usual haunt is JUSCO Tebrau City located just after the junction of Tebrau Highway and Pasir Gudang Highway, and recently a TESCO shopping centre was built next to this.

Notably, my wife even let out a yelp when she noticed the labelling includes a 'suitable for vegans' tag - something we'd be hard-pressed to find even in Singapore! Needless to say we were/are highly impressed with TESCO and hope one day they'll open an outlet here in Singapore.

How I Became a Vegetarian

Actress Ginnifer Goodwin explains why she went veg. There are some greats line at the end:

When people ask, I always tell them, "I didn't stop eating animal products because I didn't like the taste. I loved the taste! But in this life, I want to inflict as little pain as possible." To everyone who argues that we can treat our fellow earthlings this way and so we should, I like to quote Harry Potter's Dumbledore, who said: "It is our choices, Harry, that show us what we truly are, far more than our abilities." I adore that.

Brown Rice King Speaks at VSS Library Talk

When people complain that veg food at hawker stalls isn’t healthy, I point out that veg stalls and restaurants are almost the only places in S’pore where you can find brown rice. Thus, veg eateries are key path breakers in the journey of Singapore towards healthier grains.

One of the people leading Singapore towards consumption of brown rice, and not just brown rice but organic brown rice, is Heng Guan Hou, who has been at this for many years, back to the days when brown rice was considered weird.

Hou is doing a VSS Library talk entitled,
Why Brown Rice is a Better Choice’.
The venue is Bishan Public Library

The VSS InBox

The Food Outlets page is one of the jewels of the VSS website: http://www.vegetarian-society.org/?q=fdl But it’s a lot of work to keep the list up-to-date. That’s why we greatly appreciate email like the one from this reader.

I found out the outlet at Emerald (Somerset) was closed when I went to Cuppage for training last week. I told my veg friends that the website was not updated. One of my friends commented that the site is not updated because we didn’t provide feedback to you & I totally agreed with him that we have a role to play too. Thus, I’m sending you all these updates.

VSS replied:

Yes, Orchard is surprisingly barren as to veg outlets. The good thing is that most non-veg restaurants now have veg food on the menu, or even if it’s not on the menu, they can make it. Last night, I was at a kabob place with some non-veg friends. When I told the waitress that I didn’t see any veg kabobs (although there were veg items in other parts of the menu), she quickly said that they did indeed have veg kabobs.

Also, do you know about the veg restaurant in the basement of Cuppage Plaza: Nutri-Hub: http://www.vegetarian-society.org/node/733

VSS was invited to prepare a programme for the official launch of Ubin Green House on Sun, 7 Mar. Fortunately, Linda Loo (in the accompanying photo) - http://rawfoodlifestyles.com - agreed to lead a yoga session followed by a raw rojak workshop and lunch, with the rojak sauce kindly provided by Chef Dolly Wasan, 9069.1261. Study Compares Bone Fracture Rates According to Diets

Paul Appleby is not only a veg activist in Oxford - http://www.ivu.org/oxveg - he’s also a researcher in a major study of the links between food and health: EPIC (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition) - http://epic.iarc.fr

Here’s a summary of a recent report on which Paul served as first author.

One of the health concerns relating to lactose intolerance appears to be the fear that persons who, for whatever reason, avoid dairy products (a major source of dietary calcium) will be at greater risk of bone loss and fracture.

Our study of fracture risk by diet group showed that "among subjects consuming at least 525 mg/day calcium" (an amount equal to the Estimated Average Requirement in the UK - considered sufficient for 97.5% of the population) there was no difference in self-reported fracture incident rates between meat eaters and vegans. However, it did also emphasize the fact that "an adequate calcium intake is essential for bone health, irrespective of dietary preferences".

European Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2007) 61, 1400–1406

Comparative fracture risk in vegetarians and nonvegetarians in EPIC-Oxford

P Appleby, A Roddam, N Allen and T Key

Objective: To compare fracture rates in four diet groups (meat eaters, fish eaters, vegetarians and vegans) in the Oxford cohort of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC-Oxford).

Design: Prospective cohort study of self-reported fracture risk at follow-up.

Setting: The United Kingdom.

Subjects: A total of 7947 men and 26 749 women aged 20–89 years, including 19 249 meat eaters, 4901 fish eaters, 9420 vegetarians and 1126 vegans, recruited by postal methods and through general practice surgeries.

Methods: Cox regression.

Results: Over an average of 5.2 years of follow-up, 343 men and 1555 women reported one or more fractures. Compared with meat eaters, fracture incidence rate ratios in men and women combined adjusted for sex, age and non-dietary factors were 1.01 (95% CI 0.88–1.17) for fish eaters, 1.00 (0.89–1.13) for vegetarians and 1.30 (1.02–1.66) for vegans. After further adjustment for dietary energy and calcium intake the incidence rate ratio among vegans compared with meat eaters was 1.15 (0.89–1.49).

Among subjects consuming at least 525 mg/day calcium the corresponding incidence rate ratios were 1.05 (0.90–1.21) for fish eaters, 1.02 (0.90–1.15) for vegetarians and 1.00 (0.69–1.44) for vegans.

Conclusions: In this population, fracture risk was similar for meat eaters, fish eaters and vegetarians. The higher fracture risk in the vegans appeared to be a consequence of their considerably lower mean calcium intake. An adequate calcium intake is essential for bone health, irrespective of dietary preferences.

VSS Celebrates 11th AGM

More than 40 people gathered at the NVPC to review VSS’s work in 2009 and to plan our 2010 efforts. Special guests were Henny Lim, who told us about the surprising growth of vegetarianism in her native South Korea, and Ana Laura Rivarola, president of the Vegetarian Society of Paraguay (South America).

One area of discussion at the AGM was whether to launch a student membership category. After considerable debate, with a variety of perspectives politely aired, it was decided to offer free student membership to all interested full-time students at or below 23 years of age.

Everyone at the AGM was very happy to see the new VSS publication, the Meat Less in Singapore Starter Kit, which is available both online - www.vss.sg/meat-less - and in hard copy.

Also, our 52-page 2009 Annual Report, distributed at the AGM, can now be downloaded from here.

Last, but not least, we’d like to thank Pomefresh - http://www.pomefresh.com – and Holland & Barrett - http://www.hollandandbarrett.com – for providing goodies to those who attended the AGM.

2010 Highlight Speaker in October

One of the VSS highlights for 2009 was the visit by Professor T. Colin Campbell of Cornell University, author of The China Study. In his talks, Prof Campbell recommended another book, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease - http://www.heartattackproof.com - by Dr Caldwell B. Esselstyn of the world renowned Cleveland Clinic, one of the top cardiac care centres in the U.S.:

The VSS InBox

Every now and then VSS receives queries from food manufacturers about vegetarian labelling for their products, and there are international schemes, one based in the U.K. and the other based in Switzerland. Here are the urls

and http://www.euroveg.eu/lang/en/events/

Last week, we had some emails from the people in Switzerland and from a local company that would like to do certification. Too soon to say if anything will happen.

Pangolin Fund Raising Dinner - Sun, 19Apr

Pangolins (pictured to the right) are not well known, though they are native to Singapore and the region. Right now, the pangolins’ plight is twofold: they will soon be poached out of existence, and no one knows about it. A gala dinner is being held on Sun, 19 Apr, 6pm, to raise funds.

Contributions from the gala dinner will be used to:

1. Fund a dedicated research officer for pangolin population studies and trade surveys throughout Southeast Asia.

2. Conduct training, education and awareness raising activities, including producing pangolin related printed material and audio-visual communication aids.

Taiwan MOE Encourages Veg School Lunches

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Ministry of Education officials said that elementary and junior high schools should provide one vegetarian lunch per week to students to promote healthy lifestyles and help reduce global warming.

Deputy Minister of Education Lin Tsong-ming said the ministry has issued notice to schools on the proposed weekly vegetarian meals, but added that the ministry will not force every school to follow the recommendation. One person following a vegetarian diet per day can reduce carbon emissions by 7 kg, said Lin, citing research results.

Staying Vegan: A Journalist’s Account

Here’s the story of a journalist in Portland, Oregon, USA who went vegan for a month to give himself something to write about. He found it surprisingly easy and healthful to be vegan; so, he decided to keep going. The entire piece is at http://www.oregonlive.com/foodday/index.ssf/
2010/03/staying_vegan_after_a_month_of.html
Here’s an excerpt:

The best thing about my vegan exploration, though, has been the dialogue that's developed directly with Portlanders, and through the miracle of the Internet, with vegans around the globe. I never expected to get tips and encouraging words from readers as far away as Melbourne, Cape Town and Kuala Lumpur.

The Science of Anti-Aging
A Talk by Dr Sanjay Doshi, MD

  Venue: Jalan Binchang*
Date & time: Sat 10 April 2010, 7 – 9pm

Limited to 30 persons (VSS members only)

Anti-aging medicine is a common catch-phrase nowadays, but few have a clear idea of what it is really all about.

"Anti-aging medicine is the application of advanced scientific and medical technologies for the early detection, prevention, treatment and reversal of age-related dysfunction, disorders and diseases". This is the official definition.

In plain English, it refers to
utilising medical science to slow down the aging process, and to keep the body functioning at the optimum level for as long as possible.

Medical science today (and even more so in the near future) will do amazing things we previously could only dream about. We can already diagnose various hormone imbalances and utilise bio-identical hormonal replacement to have optimal performance.

Nanotechnology may find a cure for diabetes; nanoelectric currents may expedite tissue healing, including injured nerves. Stem cell research is looking at replacing neuronal cells in Parkinson patients, and heart muscle cells in patients with heart attacks. Bioengineering may enable chemotherapy drugs to be carried directly to cancer cells. Vitamin C infusion may be the next big thing in treating and preventing cancers, allergies and viral infections. Novel tumour markers, thermography and PET scanning may pick up cancers earlier than current modalities.

And some of these things are already available.
Sounds like an amazing future awaits us!

Letter to The Straits Times – Not Printed

More and more climate change experts link meat production to global warming. In the face of this growing recognition of this additional danger caused by meat, The Straits Times published an article headlined, “Less meat not equal to less heat: Expert”. VSS and at least one VSS member responded, but ST declined to print our letters. Here is the one that VSS sent.

I REFER to “Less meat not equal to less heat: Expert” (March 25). The article reports statements by Professor Frank Mitloehner that reducing meat consumption will not reduce global warming. Previously, a UN report, ‘Livestock’s Long Shadow’, had attributed 18% of human-produced greenhouse gas emissions to livestock.

Professor Mitloehner argues that to combat climate change, we should focus instead on energy and transportation. Possible flaws in the professor’s argument include:

a. Animals whom we eat emit the greenhouse gases methane and nitrous oxide. Professor Mitloehner believes “smarter animal farming” will solve this problem.

Perhaps, but the same could be said for smarter cars, planes and power stations that are envisioned for the future. Right now, this smarter farming is not being practiced, and each day means more greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere.

b. Professor Mitloehner believes that raising non-human animals for food accounts for only 3% of greenhouse gas emissions. Certainly, estimates differ widely. For instance, a Worldwatch Institute publication put that figure at about 50%.

Many factors cause global warming, and many actions need to be taken to stop climate change from wreaking havoc. It is not a question of finding the one solution. Instead, we need to work on many fronts.

c. Professor Mitloehner claims that reducing meat production will exacerbate world hunger. This ignores the tremendous inefficiency of meat production, with many kgs of plant food fed to the cows, chickens, etc. to produce just one kg of meat.

Indeed, the inefficiency of meat-based diets means that huge amounts of forests are chopped down to grow the food we feed to the non-human animals whom we eat. For example, much of the destruction of the Amazon rainforest occurs to grow soybeans and other foods to be fed to cows, etc. Rainforest destruction releases carbon dioxide, the most prominent greenhouse gas.

To conclude, some skeptics have questioned whether human activity has any role in climate change. Can we afford to take a chance that the catastrophic effects of climate change might not occur? That would be taking a terrible risk.

Others skeptics, such as Professor Mitloehner, question whether meat reduction constitutes the best way to address climate change. We should not limit ourselves to single solutions. Furthermore, meat reduction offers us health benefits and helps the non-humans animals whose lives are made short and miserable by being converted from the thinking, feeling beings they are into mere objects.

How I Became a Vegetarian – Thanks to a Fish

The following story, translated from Spanish, was found on the website of the Vegetarian Union of Paraguay (in South America). The author is Pedro Poyen Lin, the organisation’s General Secretary.

I have been a vegetarian since birth, due to an experience my mother had more than a year before I was born. Here is the story. One day, my mother went to the market and bought a live fish to cook for dinner the following evening. Upon reaching home, my mother put the fish in some water. The next day, she went out to work, not thinking much about the fish.

After work, as she was about to enter her apartment, my mother heard loud noises from within. Quickly, she opened the apartment door and looked around, but saw no one; everything appeared to be in order. Then, she looked down and saw the fish thrashing about on the floor. The noise my mother had heard must have been the fish knocking against the apartment door, perhaps hoping to escape.

Shocked by the fish’s act, that very evening, my mother thoroughly cleaned all the kitchen utensils, pots and pan. Then, she looked up to the heavens and firmly declared, “Never again will I cook the flesh of a sentient being!” That was 27 years ago.

And, I was one of the tools that my mother used to influence others, because through me, she was able to demonstrate that a healthy baby could be raised on a vegetarian diet. With this example, my grandmother and great-grandmother became vegetarians too.

Smoothie Workshop Draws Rave Reviews from Teachers

Recently, VSS did our smoothie workshop for teachers at a secondary school. Afterwards, the teachers completed a survey which revealed that prior to the workshop, many of them were not aware of the role of meat production in climate change.

Furthermore, all the respondents indicated that after enjoying the workshop, they planned to include smoothies as a frequent part of their family’s diet.

Here are a few of the teachers’ comments.

a. Very enjoyable and enlightening session. Will definitely recommend it to everyone. Thanks a zillion!
b. Reach out to parents too and the young. Thank you very much.
c. This is a very informative & beneficial workshop. The hands-on session is really fun and I’ll definitely go back & start making smoothies. Will also start to cut down on meat and eat more greens instead. Will try out the ‘no meat’ day idea.
d. I’ve had a WONDERFUL time. Can’t wait to try a meatless day(s) in a week!

VSS at Earth Day Events

This past 22 Apr marked the 40th Earth Day. During that week, VSS enthusiastically took part in events at schools and at Singapore Sports Council.

In brief, the three main reasons that meat production harms the environment are:

1. Meat is an inefficient food source, because many kgs of plant food must be fed to non-human animals to produce just 1kg of meat. This inefficiency means more forests must be cleared to grow crops and much more water must be used.

2. The 60+ billion land animals whom we humans eat annually, not to mention the marine animals we eat, produce a huge amount of waste. This pollutes the air, water and soil.

3. This waste contains two particular greenhouse gases, methane and nitrous oxide, which have a great greenhouse gas effect than does carbon dioxide. Furthermore, these gases disappear from the atmosphere faster than carbon dioxide. Thus, cutting our meat production can more quickly reduce the quantity of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, compared to reducing our CO2 production, although, of course, that is also vital.

Forum Page Letter on Pandemics

VSS sent the following letter to the ST Forum page, but it wasn’t published.

I REFER to “The pandemic that wasn’t” (April 12). The author contends that WHO’s warnings regarding the danger posed by H1N1 (also known as swine flu) overestimated the threat involved. Regardless of what did happen or will happen with H1N1, it is becoming increasingly clear that we humans’ growing appetite for eating meat from other animals does threaten us with a host of life imperiling illnesses.

The list of these grave diseases linked to meat production includes nipah virus, SARS, mad cow disease, bird flu and swine flu. While much remains to be understood, the rise of these deadly diseases has been associated with the rise in factory farming.

Factory farming is the increasingly common practice of crowding pigs, chickens and other animals together in cramped, unnatural conditions in order to produce meat more economically. Similar practices are also on the rise in regard to marine animals.

As we humans do not need to eat other animals in order to be healthy, why risk outbreaks of killer diseases, such as swine flu? Moving away from meat and towards a diet richer in plant foods might also reduce the incidence of another set of severe illnesses linked to heavy meat consumption, for example, heart disease and diabetes.

Yes, the possible effects of global warming are catastrophic, and yes, governments, companies, NGOs and individuals should all do what we can on our own and to influence others to prevent this approaching catastrophe.

The UN’s Food & Agricultural Organisation estimates that livestock production accounts for 18% of our greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, eating more plant foods is one more step to take against global warming.

Fortunately, reducing meat consumption needn’t harm the economy, as people will be eating as much, just eating different foods. Cities such as Sao Paolo, Brazil and San Francisco, USA are urging citizen to do their bit for the planet by going meatless once a week. Surely, that’s not too difficult. In fact, it could even prove to be a tasty, healthy change of pace.

Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale

In April and May, across the world, people are holding vegan bake sales: http://www.veganbakesale.org

In 2009, the first year of the event, a hundred groups participated and raised over US$25,000 for a variety of causes. The Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale was named the 2009 "Veg Event of the Year" by VegNews Magazine.

In Singapore, we can be part of this worldwide happening at two places:

1. At The Brownie Factory, 1 Raffles Place, B1-01B OUB Centre, Mon-Wed, 25-27 May (10.30 am to 8.30 pm), proceeds from the sale of their vegan brownie and vegan cakes, such as other Vegan cakes will be created for the event - carrot & beetroot cake, orange & cocoa cake, peach & orange cake, will go to charity.

2. At the Vegetarian Food Fair at Chong Pang CC in Yishun, Sun, 30 May, 9.30am-3.30pm. Contact: David, 9117.9617

One problem that vegan bakers have is how to replace eggs in their recipes. A reader sent the following info.

Fortunately, egg replacer can now be found in many larger/better-stocked grocers, in those Guardians with health food section and in some health food stores. Other egg replacers are ripe bananas, ground flax seeds, etc., depending on the outcomes you want. Here's a detailed video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGgGdZiiPio

Travelling to Cambodia?

Siem Reap, the town near Angkor Wat, has the Peace Café - http://www.peacecafeangkor.org - which caters for vegetarians. Here’s an excerpt from a letter by one of the people who runs the place:

Some of the orphanages are now looking into providing more vegetarian food. The awareness of the need to change to a plant based diet to address global warming is helping to persuade them to move in this direction. At least one 13 year old orphan is trying to maintain a vegetarian diet. With 67 children to feed, the individual attention required for this is a challenge for the organization trying to keep to a tight budget.

Time will tell if Cambodia is ready for Vegetarianism . meanwhile the support of travelers visiting Angkor Wat will hopefully keep the Peace Café afloat. There are vegetarian cooking classes, monk chats, yoga and pilates classes, meditation, child friendly gardens and trainings in positive thinking, values education, a bakery, Fairtrade shop, permaculture, and much more. Vegans are catered for but we have not gone that far ... yet!

Biodiversity and True Love

Our friends at Nature Society (Singapore) publish a beautiful magazine, Nature Watch, with incredible photos of animals in Spore and elsewhere. The Jan-Mar 2010 issue also provides some beautiful words about nature in the form of a ‘poem’, excerpted here with permission, by Dr Leong Tzi Ming of NParks. It reminds us to do what we can, via diet and other means, to enjoy and safeguard nature.

Biodiversity and True Love …

1. come in all shapes, sizes, textures, colours and may be expressed in numerous ways.
2. often brings a smile to your face and brings back fond memories.
3. improve with repeated contacts, and absence can make the heart grow fonder.
4. can overwhelm you at times with its abundance.
5. are to be enjoyed, shared and treasured.
6. require time and effort to get to know better.
7. need sufficient space to grow.
8. should never be measured in dollars and cents.
9. can suffer from ignorance and neglect.
10. should always be there, for future generations to enjoy, as much as you have.

Dr Esselstyn’s Visit Delayed

In 2009, VSS hosted a successful visit by Professor T Colin Campbell, a strong advocate of plant-based diets. Prof Campbell recommended that this year we invite Dr Caldwell B. Esselstyn, author of Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, and we were happy to do so. Our initial plans were to have Dr. Essy visit in Oct, but due to a scheduling conflict, this may only be possible next year.

We hope to find a replacement for this Oct.

Revamping Our Food Outlet List

One of the most popular locations on the VSS web is our Food Outlets page http://www.vss.sg/food which lists food outlets according to the nearest MRT and LRT stations. However, with some many new MRT stations opening this year, and even more in coming years, it’s becoming increasingly tricky to decide which MRT station an outlet is nearest.

Thus, we’re looking around for a new organising principle for the Food Outlet page. One person suggested real estate districts, and another recommended postal codes. Thoughts? Please send to info@...

Excerpt #1 from The Pig Who Sang to the Moon

Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson has used his professional knowledge of psychology to write several excellent books that provide insight into the thinking and emotions of non-human animals. The Pig Who Sang to the Moon: The Emotional World of Farm Animals (2003) is one of those books. Over the next issues, we’ll be running excerpts from that book. Here is the first.

pp. 26 and 27

On Thursday, March 9, 2000, the London Daily Telegraph reported the remarkable rescue of Dee Jones by her pet pig, Pru. … When walking with her sheepdog in Whitland, West Wales, Jones fell waist-deep into a bog. She panicked at first, but when Pru came over she put the dog leash around the pig and told her: “Go home, go home!” Pru obeyed, pulling Jones out of the mud and saving her life.

… What is the explanation? Since a human in distress makes a sound very similar to a pig in distress, Jones’s pig clearly understood that the situation was dangerous and was intelligent enough to obey the order to return home. Here the pig’s curiosity, her ability to use insight, and her natural affection for people to whom she feels close, came together to save the life of someone dear to her.

Veg Food Fair Receives Top Marks

Last month, VSS participated in a very successful veg food fair at Chong Pang CC in Yishun. Highlights of the event included the healthy/tasty food, such as brown rice, organic veggies, popiah and other wraps, salads, vegan brownies and cakes, and last but not least a booth where VSS sold our increasingly famous smoothie.

The event was also noteworthy for all the singing and dancing performances, including a dance involving the audience, a particularly lively MC and talks, including a health talk in Mandarin and a smoothie demo by VSS. However, what many people will remember most was the appearance the vegetarian super-centenarian, Teresa Hsu.

When asked what she wanted most for her birthday, in a loud voice, Teresa emphatically replied, ¡ÈIce cream¡É. So, VSS sprung into action, concocting a form of ice cream from soy milk, banana, mango and lots of ice, plus dates for sweetness.

The VSS InBox – One Soy Milk Not Veg

We received an email from a member who had taken it upon himself to investigate whether a particular soy milk contains animal-derived ingredients. The news isn¡Çt good.

Here¡Çs the email he received from a Marigold representative:

I'm Angela, brand manager for MARIGOLD Fresh Soya Milk. Thank you for your interest in MARIGOLD Fresh Soya Milk.

MARIGOLD Fresh Soya Milk is a soya milk fortified with Vitamins K, D and 5 Vitamin Bs to increase the nutritional value of our soymilk. Vitamin D is an important vitamin which aids our body in calcium absorption and is commonly added into milk/soymilk. This Vitamin D however, is derived from sheep's wool and is the only ingredient of animal origin in our soymilk.

I'm sorry that you had consumed our product unknowingly and I hope the above clarifies your query. Please feel free to contact me at my contact points below should you have any further queries.

One More Time: Meat ¢ª Climate Change

Here, from The Daily Telegraph, is more evidence of meat¡Çs role in worsening climate change.

Eat Less Meat to Save the Planet – UN

The world needs to change to a more vegetarian diet to stand a chance of tackling climate change, according to a major new United Nations report.

By Louise Gray, Environment Correspondent
The Daily Telegraph (UK) Online

The group of international scientists said the greatest cause of greenhouse gas emissions is food production and the use of fossil fuels.

But while the use of coal and oil could be gradually replaced by renewable energy sources like wind and solar, the world will always need to eat.

As the world population increases it is feared that the production of food will become the main cause of climate change and environmental degradation.

The International Panel of Sustainable Resource Management pointed out that agricultural production accounts for 70 per cent of global freshwater production, 38 per cent of land use and 19 per cent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions.

The report, that will be presented to world governments, said the only way to feed the world while reducing climate change is to switch to more a more vegetarian diet.

Doubt and Knowing What To Believe

Whether it¡Çs the benefits of eating more fruits and vegetables, the dangers of global warming or almost any issue, all sides can find scientists and studies that supposedly support their view. Remember how the tobacco industry would claim that no proof existed that cigarettes were harmful? The defenses of the meat industry, mentioned in the article above, are another good example.

Excerpt #2 from The Pig Who Sang to the Moon

Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson has used his professional knowledge of psychology to write several excellent books that provide insight into the thinking and emotions of non-human animals. Running into the street, Lulu proceeded to draw attention by lying down in the middle of the road until a car stopped. Then she led the driver to her owner¡Çs house, where Altsmann had suffered a heart attack. Altsmann was rushed to the hospital, and the ASPCA (- www.aspca.org - American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) awarded Lulu a gold medal for her heroism.¡É

VSS Open for Donations at SG Gives

SG Gives, or Singapore Gives - https://www.sggives.org - is an online donation portal for donors who seek to give to Singapore-registered charities. It is an initiative of the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre. Unlike fundraising through flag days, gala dinners or charity auctions, SG Gives allows donations to be made day and night, all week, all year round.

VSS is now listed on SG Gives. Here’s what it says about us:

Moving towards a diet rich in plant foods will benefit human health, the environment and the non-human animals with whom we share the planet. Sadly, meat consumption continues to increase. Thus, one of humanity's most urgent tasks is convincing people that eating less meat is both essential and doable.

Of course, you can also donate via the VSS web: http://www.vegetarian-society.org/support_vss

Another Way to Donate to Save Lives

The savvy folks at SG Gives have another idea for encouraging donations to VSS and other charities. As is shown in the example below from the SG Gives website, when someone passes away, their family can suggest that in lieu of flowers or other tokens, well-wishers donate to VSS via the SG Gives website.

"A simple service will be held today,
March 5th, at 3.45pm,
Mandai Crematorium Hall 3,

Rather than receive floral tributes, Richard and Wendy's eish is to support Assisi Hospice. Any donations will be gratefully received via www.sggives.org"

Letter to ST Forum Page

Seems that the following letter was not published by ST. We haven’t had any letters published in the traditional media this year, but we aren’t giving up.

I refer to 'Animals as food', The Sunday Times of 13 June (p. C3). The author, Adele Ong, questions whether we should make animals give their lives so that humans can eat fancy dishes, such as shark's fin and veal.

I would further question whether we need to make any animals give their lives to become food for humans. A large body of research suggests that humans can obtain all the nutrition we need without eating non-human animals.

For example, in 2009, the American Dietetic Association, the world’s largest organisation of health and nutrition professionals, issued an evidence based position paper stating that vegetarian diets are nutritionally adequate and can even have health benefits: http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2009-07/
ada-aru070109.php

Appearing on the same page of The Sunday Times as Ms Ong's article are photos of cute animals whom are up for adoption. Why are we so kind to cats, dogs and other species whom we take as pets, while at the same time we condemn other species, such as chickens and pigs, to short, miserable lives?

Study Suggests Veg Diets Reduce Bowel Disease Risk

Here’s a study that people with bowel trouble in their family may want to know about.

Animal Protein Intake and Risk of Inflammatory Bowel Disease: The E3N
Prospective Study

The American Journal of Gastroenterology, (11 May 2010)

Objectives:
Diet composition has long been suspected to contribute to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), but has not been thoroughly assessed, and has been assessed only in retrospective studies that are prone to recall bias. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the role of dietary macronutrients in the etiology of IBD in a large prospective cohort.

Methodology:
The Etude épidémiologique des femmes de la Mutuelle Générale de l'Education Nationale cohort consists of women living in France, aged 40-65 years, and free of major diseases at inclusion. A self-administered questionnaire was used to record dietary habits at baseline. Questionnaires on disease occurrence and lifestyle factors were completed every 24 months. IBDs were assessed in each questionnaire until June 2005, and subsequently validated using clinical and pathological criteria. We estimated the association between nutrients or foods and IBD using Cox proportional hazards models adjusted for energy intake.

Results:
Among 67,581 participants (705,445 person-years, mean follow-up since completion of the baseline dietary questionnaire 10.4 years), we validated 77 incident IBD cases. High total protein intake, specifically animal protein, was associated with a significantly increased risk of IBD, (hazards ratio for the third vs. first tertile and 95% confidence interval being 3.31 and 1.41-7.77 (P trend=0.007), and 3.03 and 1.45-6.34 (P trend=0.005) for total and animal protein, respectively). Among sources of animal protein, high consumption of meat or fish but not of eggs or dairy products was associated with IBD risk.

Conclusions:
High protein intake is associated with an increased risk of incident IBD in French middle-aged women.

Anything Is Possible: Veg in Mongolia

An unlikely vegetarian movement is taking root in Mongolia, where livestock outnumber people 14 to 1, and annual meat consumption tops 200 pounds per person.

The first vegetarian restaurant in Mongolia, Ananda's Cafe, opened in 2006. Today more than 20 vegetarian and vegan restaurants dot the capital, Ulaanbaatar, and a handful of others are scattered throughout the country. Ananda's has launched a catering service, and another popular restaurant, Luna Blanca, now sells frozen faux-mutton dumplings in local supermarkets.

Brown Rice May Lower Diabetes Risk

According to a large-scale study by researchers at Harvard and elsewhere, people who eat brown rice or other whole grains seem to have a lower risk of developing diabetes than those who eat white rice. Read more at
http://www.reuters.com/article/
idUSTRE65D5DY20100614

And, in SG, what’s the best type of eatery for brown rice? A veg eatery. More and more veg eateries, including hawkers, offer brown rice. If the one you visit doesn’t have brown rice, please try some gentle persuasion. Maybe they could start by mixing brown and white. In contrast, brown rice seems to be as common as a needle in a rice stack at non-veg eateries.

Smoothie Demonstration at Geylang Serai CC

Demand is increasing for the VSS smoothie workshop/demo. Last weekend, we did a demo at Geylang Serai CC for newly arrived domestic helpers. We’ve done them to teachers, office workers, students and others.

We emphasize that the smoothie is a quick, easy way to boost our health at the same time that we protect the planet and show concern for our fellow animals.

Some people think that it must take a long time to make a smoothie. For example, earlier this month, a VSS member was at SGH to donate blood and started a conversation with one of the nurses about the smoothie he had made for his wife and himself that morning. The nurse couldn’t believe that a smoothie with banana, gogi berry, flaxseed, apple, raw oats, brown sugar (for iron for blood donations) and sunflower seeds could be made so fast. Not only is it quick to make, but a smoothie is fast to cleanup, without any of the grease from cooking meat.

Last year, VSS was one of the main local organisers of the International Day of Climate Action: http://www.350.org

Sadly, the situation with global warming seems to be getting worse, not better. Next week, VSS is attending a meeting to consider plans for future activities. If you’d like to help educate the public about the link between meat and climate change, please contact us at info@...

The VSS InBox

A reader wrote in to find out where to obtain VSS’s Singapore Vegetarian Food Guide:
http://www.vegetarian-society.org/?q=node/1047#
In 2009, VSS launched this guide to approximately 80 veg restaurants. It is given free to new VSS members and sold to others. Of course, all such guides need frequent updating as the vegetarian food scene continues to grow (and, sadly, some outlets close). We hope to launch the updated version in the next few months.

Going Veg May Reduce Toxins

A study recently published in the journal Environmental Health, reported that people who ate a vegetarian diet for just five days registered lower levels of toxic chemicals. In particular, levels of hormone disrupting chemicals and antibiotics used in livestock were lower after the five-day vegetarian program. This pilot study suggests that we can lower our exposure to potentially dangerous chemicals through dietary choices, such as limiting consumption of animal products such as meat and dairy.

Book on Being Flexitarian

‘Flexitarian’ is a fairly new word. It means someone who is usually vegetarian but occasionally eats meat. Flexitarian diets fit an overall trend, especially in developed countries, towards eating less meat, for reasons of health, environment and/or compassion.

Here’s a book, available for sale or via NLB, which explains flexitarianism:
The Flexitarian Diet - The Mostly Vegetarian Way to Lose Weight, Be Healthier, Prevent Disease, and Add Years to Your Life -

The author, Dawn Jackson Blatner, RD, LDN, is a registered and licensed dietitian and a national spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association. She is the online nutritionist for Lifetime Television's MyLifetime.com; writes a food and nutrition blog for USA Today; teaches cooking classes; and appears regularly in print and television outlets such as CNN and RED magazine.

Singaporeans’ Diet Preferences Survey

Our friends at VegVige - http://vegvibe.com - are conducting a very brief survey on the dietary preferences of Singaporeans with a view to providing a snapshot of the percentage of Singaporeans who are vegetarians as well shed light on the types of vegetarians there are here (e.g. religious, ethical, 'only take eggs' etc.). It is hoped that this survey - the first of its kind - will enable VegVibe to call for a larger academic and/or governmental study into the dietary preferences of Singaporeans.

Please follow this link - http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/RQCJ6GP - to input your responses.

As of now, VegVibe has collected over 150 responses and are looking to gather as much more responses as possible by end-July (i.e. the more respondents, the stronger the findings) before reporting findings in August. Interestingly, preliminary analysis of the responses thus far suggests that even amongst non-vegetarians, 13% do not consume eggs and 21% do not consume dairy. Encouragingly, almost 70% of the non-vegetarians polled are flexible with their diets (i.e. are not 'die-hard' meat eaters).

Kite Flying at West Coast Park to Celebrate Shakib – 1 Aug

In 2009, to celebrate Shakib, we teamed with the Singapore Kite Association - http://ska.askwing.com - and Shakib’s family for a kite outing at Pasir Ris Park.

This year, our SKA friends have kindly invited us to join them at West Coast Park, Sun, 1 Au, 10am-6pm, Car Park 3 It’s an informal event. Come when you like, bring some picnic eats and, if you don’t have a kite, no worries, someone will loan you one. The video is a talk by Dr Neal Barnard of Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. They do research, education and advocacy related to plant based diets. The talk is about how we get hooked on bad foods and what we can do to transition to healthier foods. Also, near the end of the video is a great story about how Dr Barnard’s parents switched to plant based:

The Definition of ‘Vegetarian’

VSS is a member of IVU (International Vegetarian Union – www.ivu.org). Here is a blog entry by IVU’s honorary historian, John Davis, which may surprise many people.

The first people who called themselves 'vegetarian' were in fact vegan. This has now been established conclusively with resources not previously available. We have now shown that until 1847 *all* uses of the word 'vegetarian' came from people associated with Alcott House School, on Ham Common, south west of London.

And they used it to mean a 100% plant food diet - a 'vegetarian' was simply someone who lived on vegetation. There were, of course, many other people following variations of the 'vegetable diet', most of them adding eggs/dairy products. But we can find no indication of any of them using the word 'vegetarian' before 1847.

News from Europe

The European Parliament accepts terms 'vegetarian' and 'vegan':

"The term 'vegetarian' should not be applied to foods that are, or are made from or with the aid of products derived from animals that have died, have been slaughtered, or animals that die as a result of being eaten. The term 'vegan' should not be applied to foods that are, or are made from or with the aid of, animals or animal products (including products from living animals). "

Online survey: Commission seeks the public's opinion on the EU policy on animal welfare ---

The European Commission would like to find out the opinion of EU citizens and stakeholders on the EU Policy on Animal Welfare and to that end it launched, on June 1, an online survey. The survey will remain open until Friday, July 31.

New Commission website on animal welfare education

The EU is determined to widen the impact of education about animal welfare, partly as a response to the Treaty of Lisbon that defines animals as "sentient beings." Furthermore, concerns over animal welfare reflect the EU's own values of solidarity, respect, compassion, empathy and a sense of justice and consideration for others. Is Trying To Eat Healthfully a Disease?

Here’s something that’s funny, in a way, from our friends at VegSource.

In its never-ending attempt to fabricate "mental disorders" out of every human activity, the psychiatric industry is now pushing the most ridiculous disease they've invented yet: "Healthy eating disorder."

This is no joke: If you focus on eating healthy foods, you're "mentally diseased" and probably need some sort of chemical treatment involving powerful psychotropic drugs. The Guardian newspaper reports, "Fixation with healthy eating can be sign of serious psychological disorder" and goes on to claim this "disease" is called orthorexia nervosa -- which is basically just Latin for "nervous about correct eating."

But they can't just called it "nervous healthy eating disorder" because that doesn't sound like they know what they're talking about. So they translate it into Latin where it sounds smart (even though it isn't). That's where most disease names come from: Doctors just describe the symptoms they see with a name like osteoporosis (which means "bones with holes in them").

Getting back to this fabricated "orthorexia" disease, the Guardian goes on to report: "Orthorexics commonly have rigid rules around eating. Refusing to touch sugar, salt, caffeine, alcohol, wheat, gluten, yeast, soya, corn and dairy foods is just the start of their diet restrictions. Any foods that have come into contact with pesticides, herbicides or contain artificial additives are also out."
http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2009/aug/16/
orthorexia-mental-health-eating-disorder

Wait a second. So attempting to avoid chemicals, dairy, soy and sugar now makes you a mental health patient? Yep. According to these experts. If you actually take special care to avoid pesticides, herbicides and genetically modified ingredients like soy and sugar, there's something wrong with you.

Computer Game Teaches About Factory Farming

We received this email about a new computer game and asked a couple upper primary school students to try it out. Both gave the game an enthusiastic thumbs up. Here’s the email.

I've just posted a new project to Animalvisuals.org: Farm Rescue. Some of you know that the most popular social games right now happen to be farming games on Facebook. Farm Rescue is somewhat of a parody of these games that is meant to educate people about how intensive confinement on factory farms causes animal suffering. In the game, you get to rescue hens from battery cages, and they start out looking terrible. You can help them practice their natural behaviors like perching, dustbathing, nesting, exploring, and exercising, and the more behaviors they practice, the faster their feathers will grow back and they will return to health.

You can read more about the game at:
http://www.animalvisuals.org/advocacy/farmrescue

Or, you can check out the game website at:
http://www.farmrescuegame.com

Or, you can go straight to the game on Facebook using this link:

I'd love to hear any feedback you may have.
Thank you!

The VSS InBox

1. Yes, it really is veg.

Our previous issue announced a new veg eatery at Kallang Leisure Park. Unfortunately, their website isn’t completed, and if you visit their url, you only see the welcome screen, listing certain meat dishes (which the restaurant offers in veg version), with no mention of vegetarianism. Thus, it was no surprise that three alert readers wrote in to query the nature of the restaurant.

Always eager to serve our readers, as well as to feed his stomach, your intrepid reporter brought a family member along to try for ourselves. Yes, it really is a veg buffet restaurant, and yes, we urged them to please hurry and finish their website.

2. Paul the World Cup-predicting Octopus evoked these thoughts from one caring reader.

Paul the octopus, who is said to have been able to predict the outcome of football matches where the best of fortunetellers could not, could have ended up on some dinner plates just to satisfy the greed of a few.

Just imagine the hundreds of other animal species with special gifts and skills being needlessly destroyed for food when so many better and healthier options are available. Paul’s story, whether or not you believe he really can predict the future, lends weight to the reality VSS espouses, that animals are thinking, feeling animals, just like humans.

We’re always on the lookout for ways to make the listing more user friendly. Our latest change was to switch from listing outlets via MRT station to listing them by district. The change was made because opening of so many new MRT stations makes it more difficult to say which station is nearest to a particular outlet.

There are a few teething problems associated with the change, plus we’ve been visited by a hacker. So, please be patient as we get everything working smoothly. As always, your help in updating the listings is most welcome: info@...

The VSS Giro Scheme Needs You

Upgrading the website and the other educational work VSS does costs money and takes time. If you don’t have extra time, perhaps you have some extra money (perhaps what you save on medical costs by being veg) that you could donate to support awareness of the many benefits of plant based diets.

As little as $5 a month to the VSS Seeds of Hope giro scheme will be much appreciated, and will entitle you to Premium Member benefits including $100 worth of Food Vouchers:

Veg Dog Lives to 29

This is story is a bit old (from 2002), but it’s a good one about a dog who lived well beyond 100 in dog years, thanks in part to being on a plant based diet. Such a diet may not be right for all dogs, but it seems to have worked for this one.

Let holistic health advocate, Adeline Lo, show you how to revitalize your cells and boost your immunity with these enzyme-rich creations:
  • Fruit Enzymes
Enzymes can be made from fruits, vegetables and even herbs. Adeline demonstrates how to easily do this using banana and kiwi.
  • Fruit Punch
This potent combination of floral enzymes and mixed fruits creates a fragrant and great-tasting beverage.
  • Red Dragon Blend
A rich source of iron, vitamin C and other nutrients, the red dragon fruit is a prime ingredient in this refreshing ice blend.
  • Pasta Sauce
Tomato enzymes give a tasty twist to this tangy favourite

Adeline will also show you how to make cleaning enzymes from discarded fruit skins and vegetable roots. A cost-saving and environmentally-friendly cleanser for dishes, floors and drains.

6000 and Counting

Last Sunday, VSS participated in two events, the Onam Festival of the Singapore Malayalee Association and the Library talk by VSS Exco member Douglas Teo. At those two events about 40 people signed up for the free VSS eNewsletter (what you’re reading now).

That puts us over 6000 email addresses on our e-mailing list. Of course, at least 1000 of those addresses probably either don’t work or aren’t checked any more. Still, it shows that a lot of people are interested in veg related news. Slowly but Surely, GIRO Numbers Escalate

Just last weekend, VSS distributed at no charge more than 1000 pieces of our various flyers, brochures and VCDs. Obviously, it costs money to do the printing, even if the people doing most of the work and all of the distribution are volunteering their time. This weekend, we’re hosting a meeting of green groups which we hope will lead to a weekly Meat Less Day in SG. That’s going to cost a lot.

Thus, a big thanks to everyone who signed up for the VSS GIRO scheme in response to the appeal in the last issue.

Sorry to bother you again, but it would be great if you would escalate yourself or someone you know to Premier Member status in VSS. For as little as $5 a month to the VSS Seeds of Hope giro scheme would entitle you to Premium Member benefits including $100 worth of Food Vouchers:

Are You a Positive or a Negative Vegetarian?

This opinion piece by John Davis, Manager of the International Vegetarian Union, of which VSS is a member, discusses how vegetarians define themselves. John argues that instead of defining ourselves by what we don’t – we don’t eat meat – we should define ourselves by what we do – we eat plant based foods.
http://www.vegsource.com/john-davis/are-
you-a-positive-or-a-negative-vegn.html

An interesting comment on John’s piece came from Steve Billig, Director of the Vegetarian Nutrition Center of Colorado, USA. Here it is in slightly edited form (You can read Steve’s entire comment by scrolling below what John wrote.).

Some people believe that vegetarians are defined by what they shun - meat”? It seems pretty obvious that vegetarians are defined by what they do eat - a plant-centered diet. It is true that many people do not adopt a vegetarian or vegan diet because both are perceived as diets of rejection and denial. Who wants to live a life of denial, especially regarding something as rewarding as eating delicious food? Not many people, including vegetarians. The reason so many people, about 6 percent of people in the U.S., can sustain as longtime vegetarians is not because they are disciplined and willing to suffer for the animals, for the environment or for good health. They endure as vegetarians because, in addition to benefitting the animals, the environment and their own health, they understand that a plant-centered diet is a diet of abundance, of variety and of deliciousness.

The Complexity of the Environment Issue

Whether we like it or not, all the reasons we have for eating less or no meat are complex issues. Recently, New Scientist magazine had an article entitled, ‘Why eating green won’t save the planet’: http://www.newscientist.com/article/

‘Food, Inc’ Now on DVD

Last year, the documentary ‘Food, Inc’ briefly showed in SG. It does some truth telling about modern meat production. Last week, a reader wrote to tell us that the film is now available on DVD

Also, someone who already has the DVD forwarded an email from a friend to whom he had shown the film. The experience made her deeply question her eating habits. Maybe you can help someone have that same experience.

Date & time:

Sat, 28 Aug 2010, 3pm - 5.30pm

Cost:

Free, all are welcome!

VSS’s next outdoor adventure will be a stroll along the boardwalk at
Pasir Ris Park. The stroll will take us through a mangrove habitat, with the resident flora and fauna well-explained by Nparks’ signage.

Even better, guiding us will be Andrew Tay, who is amazingly knowledgeable about nature - maybe that’s one of the reasons why he’s vegan – and loves sharing from his treasure trove of knowledge.

With a bit of luck we’ll see mudskippers, crabs, mud lobsters, lots and lots of mangrove trees and much more. We’ll also visit the well-designed herb and spice garden patch in the park. (Learn More about Pasir Ris Park here.)

  • 3.00pm - Meet at Pasir Ris MRT.
(Look for George who will be wearing a red cap and blue shirt.
    )
  • 3.15pm - If you are driving, you can park at Pasir Ris Park Car Park C and meet at the nearby snack kiosk. (click here for a map)
  • 3.30pm - Set off on the Mangrove Boardwalk.
  • 5.30pm - End of walk.

Please remember to wear long pants, bring a refillable water bottle, a snack, a cap, herbal mozzie repellent and whatever else will make the stroll enjoyable, such as a camera.

After the walk, if you've packed your food, you can enjoy a picnic at Pasir Ris Beach. Otherwise, you can visit Yummy Green restaurant at Downtown East, try the veg dishes offered by many non-veg eateries at White Sands Mall or travel one MRT stop to visit the veg stalls near Tampines MRT.

World Vegetarian Congress in Jakarta, 1-6 Oct

The International Vegetarian Union’s World Vegetarian Congress will be held in Jakarta from 1-6 Oct: http://www.wvc2010.org. It’s a great opportunity to connect with vegetarians in other countries. And, you’ll be amazed at the size of the veg movement in Indonesia. People from 51 Indonesian cities are planning to attend, with a special emphasis on university students. For instance, IVS (Indonesia Vegetarian Society) and the Nutrition Department of the Public Health Faculty of University of Indonesia are organizing a national scientific writing competition on the topic of "Vegan Nutrition & Health: Concepts and Controversies".

Congress events will be reported by national television: Metrotv (www.metrotvnews.com). We want to have a good turnout of overseas delegates in order to impress tv viewers, as well as the Indonesia government officials who will be attending the Congress. Plus, we want to show our gratitude to our Indonesian hosts for putting on such a big event.

Talking with Hossan Leong

Hossan Leong is a well-known figure on the SG entertainment scene. These days, among his other activities, he shares breakfast DJ duties on Gold 90FM. On 4 Aug, he told listeners that he was thinking of going veg and wondered where vegetarians get their protein.

One VSS member heard this and sms-ed others, three of whom called in and shared ideas with Hossan on the air, including nutrition information and facts about noteworthy Singapore vegetarians, such as M Rameshon, our marathon record holder and Ang Hwee, one of our most noteworthy weightlifters. (See our Wall of Inspiration for photos of Ang Hwee, Rameshon and others:

The VSS InBox

After hearing about our Pasir Ris Park mangrove stroll, one reader sent in these tips for veg food, especially Thai, at Downtown East.

For Thai food lovers, you can try out Basil Inn @ Downtown East (near Entrance to the resort & swimming pool). It's a non-veg stall, but able to make pretty good veg dishes. The cook is Thai lady. Try the veg tomyum, black olive rice, garlic-pepper tofu and lemongrass drinks.. You can also request veg versions of any meat-based dishes on the menu using tofu to replace meat. Price is reasonably ok. Limited seats.

Just Acia in Downtown East (near the Japanese buffet) serves some veg food too, from $5++ set meal with free flow drinks and ice-cream. The spinach tofu & rice is good; kimchi cheese noodles can also be made vegetarian.

Lemongrass (Thai restaurant near Just Acia) has a veg menu, too, but I haven't tried their food yet. Restaurant set up and more pricy.

The Power of Asking

Here’s a tip we picked up at
http://www.vegan.com/blog/2010/07/20/
animal-advocacy-and-the-power-of-asking
- It pays to ask, such as some people may just be waiting for someone to ask them to go veg once a week or to eat less fried food. We show that we care about people, when we ask. We show that we have high expectations for people, when we ask. So, please give it a try. VSS is asking you.

What They Didn’t Tell Us about the Clinton Wedding

The marriage of Chelsea Clinton, daughter of Hillary and Bill Clinton, received lots of media attention, but one aspect of the wedding wasn’t highlighted: the food. Seems like the standard meal was veg; guests had to make a special request for meat. Kind of the opposite of most wedding dinners, which feature lots of meat, and guests have to make a special request for veg. Let’s hope that Chelsea and her husband’s example is followed by many more brides and grooms.

A Note of Caution – B12

By now, readers of the VSS eNewsletter should know that vegetarians need to pay attention to their B12 levels. As Dr Michael Greger explains in this video - http://video.vsh.org/Greger5.html starting about minute 13 - from our friends at Vegetarian Society of Hawaii (see their website for videos of talks by other veg experts), the consequences of low B12 levels are very serious, including death and lifelong incapacitation. Other sources of information on B12 include
http://www.vegansociety.com/lifestyle/nutrition/b12.aspx
and http://www.veganhealth.org/b12

Here is a summary of a study comparing B12 levels among meat eaters, lacto ovo vegetarians and vegetarians. The findings strongly suggest that vegetarians may be more susceptible to low B12 levels and their consequences.

European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. 2010 Jul 21
Serum concentrations of vitamin B12 and folate in British male omnivores, vegetarians and vegans: results from a cross-sectional analysis of the EPIC-Oxford cohort study.

Gilsing AM, Crowe FL, Lloyd-Wright Z, Sanders TA, Appleby PN, Allen NE, Key TJ.
Cancer Epidemiology Unit, Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine, University of Oxford, Oxford, UK.

Background/Objectives: Vegans, and to a lesser extent vegetarians, have low average circulating concentrations of vitamin B12; however, the relation between factors such as age or time on these diets and vitamin B12 concentrations is not clear. The objectives of this study were to investigate differences in serum vitamin B12 and folate concentrations between omnivores, vegetarians and vegans and to ascertain whether vitamin B12 concentrations differed by age and time on the diet.

Subjects/Methods: A cross-sectional analysis involving 689 men (226 omnivores, 231 vegetarians and 232 vegans) from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition Oxford cohort.

Results: Mean serum vitamin B12 was highest among omnivores (281, 95% CI: 270-292 pmol/l), intermediate among vegetarians (182, 95% CI: 175-189 pmol/l) and lowest among vegans (122, 95% CI: 117-127 pmol/l). In all, 52% of vegans, 7% of vegetarians and one omnivore were classified as vitamin B12 deficient (defined as serum vitamin B12<118 pmol/l). There was no significant association between age or duration of adherence to a vegetarian or a vegan diet and serum vitamin B12. In contrast, folate concentrations were highest among vegans, intermediate among vegetarians and lowest among omnivores, but only two men (both omnivores) were categorized as folate deficient (defined as serum folate<6.3 nmol/l).

Conclusion: Vegans have lower vitamin B12 concentrations, but higher folate concentrations, than vegetarians and omnivores. Half of the vegans were categorized as vitamin B12 deficient and would be expected to have a higher risk of developing clinical symptoms related to vitamin B12 deficiency.

Pasir Ris Mangrove Stroll

Staying Healthy and Youthful Through a Vegetarian Diet

Last year, Dr Sanjay Doshi’s NLB talk for VSS was so popular that the talk attracted about 50 people, 20 more than NLB had been planned for. This time, NLB has given us a larger venue at a larger library:

Changi Room at Tampines Regional Library, on Sat, 18 Sep, 3.30-5pm.
http://golibrary.nlb.gov.sg/Event.aspx?EventID=33741

Dr Doshi is an M.D. who specialises in anti-aging medicine at Mediline Wei Min Clinics, a general practice that focuses on holistic patient management. His VSS talk focuses on types of food that can help us maintain our youth, thus slowing down our aging process, and on the overall health benefits of a vegetarian diet.

On the Radio Again

Our last issue reported that VSS members had called in to advise Gold 90FM DJ Hossan Leong on protein in veg diets. We were back on the radio again, Fri, 13 Aug, when word went around that 938Live would be discussing shark fin.

We spread the word via Facebook and Twitter. In fact, we might have done too well at spreading the word, because when the DJs asked listeners to call in, the lines were jammed.

If we had gone on air, we would have seconded what one of the DJs said about sharks being capable of feeling pain, fear and psychological stress. And we would have added that scientific evidence is also revealing that fishes are far more intelligent than many people may believe. They have long-term memories, social structures and problem solving abilities; some fishes have even been seen using tools.

But our favourite argument in favour of sharks is to ask: What if aliens came to Earth and started eating us? What if they took a particular fancy to one of our body parts, such as our thumbs? Just because they were smarter than us and more technologically advanced, would it make it right for them to eat ‘human thumb soup’?

This concept is on display in the following cartoon:

Where To Find B12 Supplements

Our last issue discussed the importance of B12 and reported that many scientists believe B12 isn’t available for human absorption in plant foods. Thus, it may be useful to take a B12 supplement. VSS did a bit of investigation to locate B12 supplements that contain no ingredients of animal origin. However, we have to rely on what the manufacturers state about their products’ content.

Where to find B12 supplements? Your favourite organic shops may have vegan B12 supplements. Also, vegan B12, such as Blackmore’s B12, is available on the internet, and local entrepreneurs market B12 and other supplements that may be of interest to vegetarians.

Below is information on whether some of the large chains of stores sell B12.

a. Guardian says that they do not have any vegan B12
b. Holland & Barrett has
c. GNC has
d. Nature’s Farm has
e. Watson has a brand called Webber Naturals but only at the following outlets: Terminal 1 (departure hall), Terminal 3 (B2), Parkway Parade, Ngee Ann City, Northpoint, Raffles City, Lucky Plaza (currently under renovation), IMM, Harbourfront.

Of course, this information will change. Let’s hope that the change is towards more outlets offering vegan B12. Please send updates. Thanks. And, pls remember: Don’t play, play. Take your B12 today!

Chef Kenney’s latest book, Everyday Raw Desserts will be published this month and will be followed by Everyday Raw Express and Raw Chocolate in 2011 and 2012, respectively.

Relax Guys: Soy Won’t Make You Grow Breasts

Lots of myths exist about soy. This recent research review helps put many of them to rest:
http://www.soyconference.com/magazines/jun10.pdf

Here’s an excerpt:

A new study published in Fertility & Sterility has found that soy does not have feminising effects on men. The review, by Dr Mark Messina, examined published data from over 150 clinical studies to critically evaluate the effects of soy isoflavones on men. Results show that soyfood consumption has no effect on circulating levels of testosterone or estrogen, sperm count, semen quality, breast size or erectile function in men and concludes that there is no evidence indicating that the isoflavones or other components of soyfoods exert feminising effects on men.

Launch of VegVibe Print Edition

After a year online offering 12 monthly issues, Singapore’s independent vegetarian magazine, VegVibe launched their print edition and has become a bi-monthly print magazine as of Sep. The inaugural print issue (Sep/Oct 2010) was launched on 29 Aug at the Central Library. A VSS representative spoke on links between vegetarianism and the environment and animal welfare movements.

VegVibe has printed 3,000 copies for the first print issue and encourages readers to read their copy and pass it along to others so as to maximise its usage whilst reducing wastage. Subsequent issues will be released on the 15th of each odd month (i.e. November, January, March, May, July and September). The print edition will continue to be provided free and will be available at various partner locations around Singapore. An identical virtual copy will also continue to be released online and you can be notified upon release of each issue via email.
