Celebrate Bike to Work Week

Put down those keys, go by bike.  Trade in your steering wheel for 2 wheels.  The bike is back like never before.

Help build a sustainable community with emission free commuting.  Communities across the country are holding events to promote bicycling as a way to improve the environment by not using a car, and to promote healthy lifestyle options.  With Climate protection a hot topic these days how can we not ask ourselves what we can personally do to create an improved environment for ourselves and future generations?  Personal actions inspire others to do the same.  Biking may be viewed as a toy or recreation by some, but give it a try and find an exhilarating way to go places.

We’re celebrating in Ventura County too.  Here are some offerings for cyclists:

  • Free ride coupons for VISTA bus routes.  This intercity bus service provides bike racks on all buses to help make longer trips car free.  And Thousand Oaks transit offers free rides to cyclists boarding TOT busses with their helmet and/or bike.  Download coupons at www.vcapcd.org/btw.htm
  • Pit Stops in Ventura, Thousand Oaks and at CSUCI on May 14.  Cyclists can stop by on their way to work for goodies and information about biking to work at several rest stops, and connect with other cyclists.  You can set up a pit stop for your employees only –OR-  There is still time to sponsor an open pit stop in other areas of the County.  Let me know if you are interested.

This is the time to recruit new and novice cyclists to try riding to work.  Participants will realize the convenience and fun bicycling offers.  Make it a habit. Biking is economical, healthy, eco-friendly and, of course, you will have a good time while doing it.

Don’t miss the new handout from the League of American Bicyclists, “Overcoming Bike Commuting Excuses”.  http://www.bikeleague.org/resources/better/commuters.php

Bet you didn’t know that 1 in 4 people live within just a few miles of their work.  What does this mean?  Riding a bike gets you there faster (door to door in minutes), no lycra required and you won’t need a shower.  You don’t have to be hard core to enjoy the ride to work.

Worried about promoting bicycling as an alternative mode because of the dangers in traffic?  There is a skill involved in riding the roads, but it’s one that can be learned relatively easily.  Sponsor a road bicycling clinic at your worksite.  Certified Instructors can advise and instruct everything from appropriate clothing and fixing flats to hazard avoidance strategies and safe route planning.  Contact your local bike shop for certified instructors in the area, or check the website http://www.bikeleague.org/cogs/resources/findit/?courses=1&instructors=1&state=CA&submit.x=25&submit.y=6

A variation on this idea is a lunch and learn for all employees.  Whether they are cyclists, parents of bike riders or drivers who encounter bike riders on the streets, everyone will get something out of this type of presentation on the rules of the road.

In the end, fears such as being crushed under the wheels of a truck prove unfounded. A growing number of dedicated folks bike to work and really feel they’re on to something.  Maybe they are.

The League of American Bicyclists now has a page for the Bicycle Commuter Tax Provision at http://www.bikeleague.org/news/100708faq.php.

The IRS recently published Publication 15-B which includes the rules for the Bicycle Commuter Benefit that went into effect in January 2009. To access the information go to the following link:  http://www.irs.gov/publications/p15b/index.html.

Is anyone teaching Road Courses in Ventura County?  I would like to promote the courses to employers during Bike to Work Week May 11-15, 2009.  Many cyclists are concerned about riding in traffic to get to work and employers are concerned about liability.

Thanks,

excellent! I just filled out your survey.

I commute from Moorpark to Simi 1-2 times/week. It is annoying that as soon as I
enter Simi, the bike lanes disappear (Tierra Rejada/Los Angeles Avenue) and the
shoulders are covered in broken glass (hooray for Kevlar tires and Mr. Tuffy
liners!).

I have a Ventura county bike map that shows the river trail as a bike path, but
when I looked at it where it crosses Madera, it was a dirt path, not paved. Is
there an east-west bike lane/path?

As gas prices continue to increase, more people (including school kids) will be
commuting by bicycle. Now is your chance to put in safety measures that will
keep cyclists safe on the roads. I suggested Botts dots on the bike lanes in
your survey, because in Moorpark, many drivers seem to think bike lanes are just
road shoulders that they can drift into at any time.

Changing drivers ed in high schools might also be something that could be
updated, to include cyclist awareness and rights-of-way.

Please look carefully at keeping cyclists safe, as cars are our #1 concern while
commuting.

One other issue for me is a lack of showers at my workplace. I don't know if
this is something the city can address, but maybe there are gyms or other
businesses that might be willing to support bicyclists by making changing/shower
facilities available.

Thanks!
Linda

Hello VCBC members!

My name is Adrian Leung. I'm one of the planners working on the Simi Valley
Bicycle Master Plan. The press release is on the City's webpage.

Part of the planning process is figuring out what bicyclists need and want
within the City of Simi Valley.  The last five years, they've improved their
infrastructure a lot, but there's still a lot more room to grow.  Please help
out with your input by checking out the project's website, and filling out a
survey--www.simibike.org

Feel free to call or email me, whenever, if you want to discuss your ideas in

The distance from Lockwood Valley to the Ventura Fairgrounds is 75 miles.  If you were to ride from Ojai to Lockwood there would be some outrageous climbs but do-able depending on your level of fitness.  I would suggest driving it first to see what you are getting into.  There were a couple of peaks that had to be climbing going down into Ventura but there are more on the reverse.  Got up to 55 mph on the downhills.  However once you are at the higher elevations the roads are great.  You can count the cars you will encounter on one hand!

can you ride there from Ojai, or is it too steep? We ride the bike path all the time, but we are trying to get a little longer ride without having it turn into a metric century.

There are two ways one is to take the five north to
Frazier Park.  The other is via the 33 which I have
ridden all the way to the Ventura Fairgrounds.  I can
be more detailed but not at this moment I will write

Count me in. We need an active bike coalition, especially as more
people take to bikes in the face of high gas prices.

All,
CalTrans Office of Maintenance Design is initiating a project to replace
non-compliant storm drain grates with bicycle friendly grates on all
State
Highways within District 7 on which bicycles are legally allowed to
travel.
They are in the process of compiling a list of locations that need
upgrading. Our Field Maintenance crews are providing the information to
our designers.

We would like to ask for your help. As a double-check, we'd like to
know
if there are any locations that you are aware of any non-bicycle
friendly
storm drain grates on State Highways in District 7. If so, please
identify
the locations by State Highway number, direction and cross-street.

I believe that the Office of Maintenance is doing a great job in
identifying the locations. So far they've identified 157 grates on
State
Highways that need replacing in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties.
Caltrans Maintenance forces are willing to perform the installation. As
of
now, we are trying to identify a funding source to use to purchase the
grates

Thank you!

Hello,

Does the Ventura County Bicycle Club still exist. I was a racing
member about 35 years ago. The sponsor was Bill's Bike Shop in Camarillo.

I've been living on the east coast for almost 30 years now, and still
riding and race when I'm fit enough to. I ride in the winter too, on a
mountain bike, if there isn't too much ice and snow.

Thanks,

p.s. The "Gump" thing is a nickname, and it keeps my name out of the

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HAVE SIGNED THE SHARE THE ROAD PETITION!!!

We have reached our goal of 7,500 and are now flowing over with added
signatures. If you haven't signed please do! The petition will remain
open until the first plate is on a car. WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!

http://www.petitiononline.com/str1234/petition.html

More information at http://www.sharetheroadsaveslives.com

What we must do next: A bill must be authored and supported by a state
legislator to be pushed through all the steps required by the state of
California in Sacramento. However we are not done, not by a long shot
and
we are asking for your help.

Please cut and paste the following and email it directly to YOUR state
senator and assemblyman. You can find your state representatives for
your
district at the following websites:

http://www.senate.ca.gov/~newsen/senators/senators.htp

http://www.assembly.ca.gov/clerk/MEMBERINFORMATION/memberdir_1.asp

We need to get the attention of all the California state representatives
that this special interest plate is VERY important to us all and will
SAVE
LIVES through education and hopefully stiffer penalties to those who hit
us!

The letter to email (you may send your own if you would like, but please
send one):

To my state representative,

I am in support of the special interest license plate "Share the Road"
and
I am requesting that this plate be established and available for
purchase.

Our state representatives have told us that we needed 7,500 supporters
for
the DMV to even consider such a plate. The cycling community of
California
has spoken and we now have over 7,500 signatures located at:
http://www.petitiononline.com/str1234/petition.html

If we have the support to make this profitable for the DMV and the
expense
is covered by the plate cost then this special interest plate should not
be
ignored. We are tired of cyclists being injury or killed by motorists
that
do not obey the law, or are ignorant to the law because it is not taught
in
driver education or the DMV handbook. The proceeds of this plate must
go
to help educate everyone of their responsibility to share the road and
impose a stiffer penalty for those who do not.

Sincerely

Hi Everyone,

If you are interested in adding $$ to your pocket while helping to keep
our
air cleaner then The Bicycle Commuter Act is for you. Please take a
moment and read below!

The Bicycle Commuter Act (H.R.807, S.2635) is before congress right now.
It would provide a tax benefit to employers who offer cash
reimbursements to employees who ride to work in order to help defray
their commuting costs. All this requires is an amendment to the
Transportation Fringe Benefit of the tax code to extend the definition
of "transportation" to include bicycles. Employers are given the
flexibility to set their own levels of benefit payments and the bike
commuter can use those payments to pay for a bike, accessories, safety
equipment, insurance, and locker or shower fees.

Here's what you do:

It is so SIMPLE!! Just go to this link:
http://capwiz.com/lab/issues/alert/?alertid=8647031 and input your zip
code and the page generates emails to go to all your congress
people....Then just sign and send.

Hope you take the time to do this. And feel free to FORWARD this
email....Thanks!

Cheers
