Hi.
Whilst I agree with the others that the 24V is the one to go for, I have
owned two 12 valvers over the last seven years and had no serious problems
with either of them. I had a 1990 2.5 that I bought in 92 and took up to
155k miles and I now have a 1990 3.0i CD with 120k miles on it.
I had the following probs.
2.5 1990.
1, It always ran warm - especialy when towing (22cwt)
2, All wires welded together in n/s rear door hinge section.
3, Sun roof cable snapped.
4, Appetite for front tyres.
5, Poor fuel consumption (3 litre is a lot better)
Otherwise all usual consumables.
3.0 1990
1, Damp boot on off side.
2, Metalic paint starting to craze on rear wings.
My current one tows 28cwt with no problems. My father in law has recently
replaced his granada with a f plate 3.0i 12v and tows 33cwt with no
problems. All 3 of our cars have rear springs made to the same specification
as the ones fitted to the german armoured model due to the standard ones not
being capable of managing 4 people, letalone a trailer.
I work for a large company where I regularly get to drive fancy cars but so
far have found nothing other than perhaps the BMW 735/740 that is better to
drive.
It helps as well if you can get membership to vauxhalls trade club. I pay
6.90 for semi synthetic oil(5l) 6.70 for air filters. 1.00 for spark plugs
etc etc.

What ever model you end up getting it will be one hell of a lot of car for
your money. I used to change my cars every 3 years but now cannot find
anything worthy of swapping mine for.

Richard

Hi,

Sorry for not replying sooner, but I have been away for a few days.

I would have to agree with the comments of everyone else so far...go for
the 3.0 24v, you will not regret it!

Things to check for:
Play in Steering Rack (Over £1500 for a new one!)
   Rust in Boot Floor
Rust on front Chassis arms (Check down each side of radiator)
Ex Police (Looked after well, but missing alot of trim)
   Working Air-con
   Full Service History
   Oil in Radiator Expansion tank
   Worn Shockers
Fuel injection and rocker cover leaks
Kick down failure on Auto box
Check mileage against old MOT's (Electronic dash very easy to change
and
          hence clock)

The Senator is a very reliable car when looked after properly, like any
other cars out there, you do get bad ones, so there for the Full Service
History is a must.

My brother works for a Vauxhall Garage, and he has seen two Senators with
over 250K on the clock and still running has though were new.

I have personally had my 3.0 24v for just over four weeks, and the only
thing that has gone wrong is the fuel pump packing up. A job any
competent person can do on their drive. Be carefull when sourcing parts
though. Vauxhall Quoted me £243 for a new pump, luckily, my local
scrapyard had just got a Senator in and I managed to get one for £40.

Also, many parts I can source fairly cheaply, because I work for Partco.
(Unluckily the fuel pump was dealer part only!!)

If you have any other questions, then please let us know, we will be only
too glad to try and help.

Don't worry about about getting kicked off the list, as Howard as already
said, we are here for anybody (Owner or not) to talk about the best car
Vauxhall produced!.

BTW. Where in the country are you based?

Regrds

Steve

Hello Baconbutty(havn't time to look for your name)

Welcome to the world of the Senator. As far as Kicking you off the list is
concerned, I am sure I speak for us all by saying that it is up to YOU when
you want to leave the list as the list is for anyone who wants to talk about
the Senator and ask for advice/help with any problems we may have.

I have to agree with Tony and say that the 3.0l 24v is the best by far, I
have had a 3.0l 12v Manual but it was nothing but trouble although I have to
say I bought a bad one (I don't think there are many but I got one).

Autobhanstormers ? Tony always sings there praises LOL and I have to agree (
Tony, I will have to get that cheque off)

I have been unlucky to have had 2 breakdowns and both with the Van on :-

1 The fuel pump, after 120K Miles

2 The top Hose ( keep an eye on it, it is VERY close to the fan when it gets
old )
the AA sorted me out very well

I personally own 2 cars

1. Senator 3.0 24v 1991 (H reg) auto in Green
2. Carlton 3.0 GSI 1987 (E reg) manual in Mat Silver

I live in the Leeds (ish) area and use my Senator Daily for going to work
and back, my wife drives the Carlton, she won't let me have it (not that I
am really bothered) but I like to "drive" now and again, but it tends to
attract the "boy racers" more than the Senator, but either way they tend to
get a shock especially if I am on my own on the Moterway.
We are also keen Caravanners(sorry) and my Senator tows my 25cwt van like
it wasn't there.

I haven't looked to see where you live, but I have a contact in Skipton (West
Yorkshire) who buys and sells nothing but Senator's, he do's them up himself
and is VERY Knowledgeable, he may have a Car for you?????? let me know if you
are interested I get allot of my spares from him.

If you are buying Privately check the Spec as the Nicies are always expensive
or frustrating to put right, better still take a Senator owner with you (we
all know what should go where) and as you are a Mechanic you will know the
rest.

Don't hessitate to post if you need any more help.

Don't do as I did 4 years ago and get yourself over excited at the thourght
of owning one and miss the obvious.

Good Luck

Howard........

IMHO, you've got to go 3.0 24v. I've had mine for just over 2 years and have
to say you won't regret it. They aren't that cheap to run part wise, but if
you look around for them, or better still join Autobahn Stormers
(http://www.autobahnstormers.co.uk/) where someone will have always had the
same problem and can point you in the right direction. Example: Lamba
Sensors; Main Dealer 120+ via recommendation from Autobahn 45! I really
can't recommend them highly enough. I saved my £18 annual joining fee within
2 months and the advice is first class.
Reliablity? Well, I have had more reliable cars, although the Senator has
never let me down. Having said that, Senators do have rather a lot more
goodies to go wrong.

Hi all,

I have noticed a small problem with my car.

The bloody sunroof dosen't work!

I have checked the fuse and all is ok.

Does anyone know of any other easy checks to make, or have I got to go to
the dreaded dealer :-(

Hope someone can help.

It may seem obvious but I had a similar problem, it turned out to be the Dist
Cap that was after changing ALL the plugs & leads.

Also as I am writing I can recall when I first cot the present car 3.0l 24v
Auto , it kept cutting out , it took my mechanic no more than 10secs to find
out the problem (he DOES know Senators and believe you me it makes a
difference ) it was the Exhaust Manifold gasket that had a VERY small hole
underneeth .

Hope this helps, let me know how you get on

MY 89 IS NOT VERY RUSTY BUT IT HAS GOT A BLOODY MISFIRE I CANNOT TRACE,
ESPECIALLY ON STARTUP. THE BEAST RUNS FINE AT ALL REVS ABOVE TICKOVER
THOUGH.

THE PROPSHAFT BEARING, OR WHEEL BEARINGS, OR DUST BUILD UP IN THE HANDBRAKE
DRUM CAN ALL CAUSE THIS TYPE OF NOISE

sounds like a frightening amount of rust. How old is the Senator. I've had a
89 and a 90 and have never seen any serious rust.
Check the rear wheel bearings for play this can cause break noise.

Garry,

Check your calipers and pads are seated correctly, also check your discs
for warping.

After fitting your new springs, did you check the ride height, it could
be the wheel archs rubbing against the tyres.

Hope this helps, if not come back with more information(ie. when does
the noise occur-under braking, all the time, when cornering, when
accelerating, does it sound like metal on metal or metal on rubber)

Regards

Steve

Hi again both,

I have just done something a little bit cheeky, I don't know if you have
seen James Waddingtons Site (I will add a link), but he has got an
excellent site with a few names in his guestbook, well I have just
emailled each person in the book, asking them to take a look at this
list. Who knows...it might just help bump up members!

Speak to you later.

Hi Howard & Tony

I have just added a new link to the site
(http://www.bantam.demon.co.uk/carstuff.htm). The site is owned by Danny
Thompson, and he has got some excellent pictures of his 3.0 24v ex-poilce
Senator. I emailed him direct and he has agreed to add a link to his
site to this mailing list.

Only 8 Hours to go........:-))))))))))

Regards

Steve

Hi Steve

I was VERY SURPRISED to hear from the list after about 3 months I used to
exchange posts with a guy called Tony from Southend but haven't heard
anything from him lately.

My name is Howard Thacker and I live in the Leeds area I drive a 3.00L 24v
auto in Opal green I have had this car for about 2 years and is my 2nd
Senator my first being a 3.00L 12v Manual in Black (bad Buy) tell you
more later.

I set the list up in October 1999 and apart from yourself and Tony there
has being no interest ( maybe there isn't many Senator people with pc's or
they don't know about mailing lists?????? ) this is where I need help cos I
simply don't have the contacts .

I will hand over the list to anyone who would like it the only reason I
started it was for us ALL to have a common place to exchange info and I
thought I had failed but it costs nowt so I left it on and I am VERY
pleased to hear from you.

Let me know how you go on with the BEST CAR you will ever drive.

All the very best of luck and regards

Howard Thacker...............

ps Please add my address to your address book and keep in touch either on
or off the list..

Steve,
Welcome to the wonderful world of the Senator! A fine motor indeed. I'm sure
you will find it a 'level above' from your Rover!!!
I can throughly recommend autobahn stormers web site and mailing list. The
knowledge on there is outstanding to such a degree, one of the members is an
advisor for Vauxhall!! You can join the mailing list if your inbox can stand
it! The club costs about 18 quid to join pa, but for that you get a
quarterly glossy magazine, regional meetings and a car sticker! I saved
enough on a 24v rear box to more than cover membership in the first month!
Not only that, but its better than a geniune vauxhall box, and is hand made
from stainless steel by one of the members!
There is an online database of all problems and resolutions on a website you
can visit and when I did, it had resolutions for all the problems I have
ever had!
I think the autobahn website is www.autobahn.co.uk. I will check though.
Enjoy your new toy!!!

Hi all,

I have just found this club and have joined!!!

I will be picking up my first Senator tomorrow night...3.0 CD 24v
Auto, G plate, 94K miles, F.S.H., small spot of rust to rear of rear
wheel arch (O/S), otherwise immaculate. 70 year old lady owner for
last 5 years, anything needed doing it was done immediately, (should
have picked it up last week, but had a problem with the viscous fan
and she wouldn't sell it until it hasd been fixed!), taxed until
8/00, MOT'd until 7/00. All this for only £1600!!!!!! I couldn't
believe my luck.

I fell in love with the car the moment I sat in it. Currently I am
driving an old Rover 825i, which is starting to fall apart, so if you
know of anyone who wants one for spares or repair, tell them to email
me and make me an offer.

For the past 12 mths I have been a member of the rover800 mailing
list, and the information and knowledge of people on that list never
seems to amaze me. It would be nice if we can get the same sort of
knowledge on here. I have found a few sites for the Senator, so I
will contact each one and see if they will allow a link to this list
on there.

I myself do have limited knowledge about cars and will try and pass
on any helpful hints or tips I can help with.

(I also work for Partco, so I can always try and find parts that
little bit cheaper!!)

Still, thats enough from me for now, I will post again once I have
collected and driven the car without the other half digging her nails
into the leather!

Regards

Steve.

Sorry for the delay ( work probs)

You said you have had problems with the "Idle Motor" could you tell me
What it is?
Where is it ?
What does it do ? and
What happens if it fails?
Also have you any advice for me should I come across the same problem on
either my Senator or my Carlton GSI as I prosume this car could have the
same problem as the engine is the same as the 12v Senator engine.........

Water bottle float ?

Well I havent bourght one new but I have to find one that either works or
lasts without lighting that dreadful light on the dash. You probably know
the cure but just in case you don't you need to connect the two wires from
the top of the float, obviously you wont know when the bottle is empty but
I check it weekly with all the other checks and top up all the time any
way, not ideal but no annoying light on the dash. Incedently having said
this the Carlton's seems to be working ok , maybe I'll nick it when I can
get the keys of the wife , next time the tank needs filling.......

Radio

I dont have your system ( I have Box Std Blauponkt radio cassett in the S
and Philips in the C ) so I cant help ,neither have I heard of any problems
my end but if someone at Autobahn stormers can help I'am sure yoy will be
ok......

I take your point about the way she takes off at 60mph I too find it a
comfort especially on the motorways where you can bet your bottom doller
some "boy racer" is up your ass and if I am on my own I somehow can't seem
to find the L/H indicator....... What a "Beast"!!!!!

What is your top speed?

Nothing from your message on the Autobhan Stormers yet I see, but I'am sure
if we give them time someone will join us.I visited the site yesterday
(Sun) nothing much new since last time I was there but what a dream the
Convertable, I will have to save my pennies..

Once again Sorry for the delay (not intentional) but please bare with me
over the next few weeks as being in retail this is my buisiest period as
you can understand..

Regards

Howard..........

Another Virus to look out for.Mel

We have been informed of a new virus - WOBBLER. It will arrive on e-mail titled
"How to Give a Cat Colonic". CALIFORNIA IBM and AOL have announced that it is
very powerful, more so than Melissa, and there is no remedy. It will eat all
your information on the hard drive and also destroys Netscape Navigator and
Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Do not open anything with this title and please pass this message on to all your
contacts and anyone who uses your e-mail facility.

Not many people seem to know about this one yet so propagate it as fast as
possible. This information was announced last week by IBM. Please share it
with everyone in your address book so that the spreading of the virus may be
stopped. This is a dangerous virus and there is no remedy for it at this time.

Please practice cautionary measures and forward this to all your inline friends
ASAP.

The Rover is the big one (2.5 V6) which has just been replaced by the 75. He
got a good deal because it was the older model. Was 25K got it for 15K! It
is quite nice, but is narrower and it is obvious inside and he says at 50mph
+ it doesn't have that kick that the Senator does. Thats one thing that
first impressed me about the Senator, it takes off from 70 like a lot of
cars do from 0-60! It has so much in it!
Yes, I did mean the wheel bearing, as my mechanic told me 18 months ago, he
could just hear it when moving the wheel when it was jacked up for the other
bearing.
The most recent work I had done was a idle motor, which was causing it to
almost stall when accelarating from still.
Do you or have you ever had problems with the water bottle float? I've had
two now and both don't float anymore causing the light to come on on the
dash?
I have the Grundig audio setup with the 10 auto changer in the boot. Just
recently, the radio on FM cuts out and can't tune in at all for a few hours.
I managed to find someone else with the same problem on Autobahn stormers
and it looks likely that the Frequency Modulator on this model often does
this, as this guy is also in touch with a few others with the same problem.
Have you experienced this one?
I will go and put a message on the guestbook of Autobahn now, but I'll
pretend its not me as they know I know about the members list and don't want
to upset them (I'm sure they won't mind anyway!). That reminds me, I must
send that cheque off! I'll let you know what its like!

Thanks for your views regarding the list. I wasn't aware of the
Autobahnstormers mailing list and I do hope they don't think that we are
treading on their toe's..... as far as membership is concerned I can't
think of a reason not to join except the £18.50 per year membership fee
which I am sure could be saved on parts if needed but I seem to get through
(or if I am honest can't be bothered to join) without them, I know someone
in Otley (where Emerdale is filmed) which is within 20 miles of home who
breakes and does up Senators for a living, so I am very lucky as he is
always willing to give advise if needed so long as I buy the odd part from
time to time, usually things like switches, central locking motors and I
needed an alternator last year, nothing major (on this car).

On my last Senator which was a 3.0ltr 12v J reg (more about this wreck
later) I also needed a Heater Matrix (£150.00 aprox from Vauxhall ).

You didn't say which Bearing I am guessing on Wheel to which I can say I
have had no preblems to date (famous last words).

I am curious to know which Rover your Grandad chose when he had to let his
Senator go?(a Rover and I had a argument last year and the Rover 200 was
totaled) I agree with him on the Omega, what an inferior car to the Senator
and who the hell wants 3 head rests in the back ? :lol......

PS
I will have to check out the Autobahnstormers Web Site for these Pics but
my PC is antique (486) and Pics take ages to load and download. Also I
didn't think irmsher were still going (they must be) as my previous Carlton
D reg had a body kit on and the bumper had to be repaired after a lorry hit
me.

Anyway time to shut up , the Wife wants her bed time reading (I think
that's what she said) lol....... loads to tell you.

Hi Howard,
Yes, I have been on the autobahn stormers site recently, Monday night in fact. I
found some really cool senator piccies too! One is a Senator Estate and the
other a Senator convertable. They are done by Irmcher and some other firm.
Are you a member of Autobahn and folked out 18 quids 50? I understand from some
the the club people there, that they already have a mailing list that gets about
50 messages a day but you have to be a member. I will be sending off my cheque
shortly unless you know of any reasons not to join?. Having said that, a mailing
list for Senator owners that aren\'t/don\'t want to be a member is a great idea
I think. I even posted a message on their guest book offering to host a mailing
list for Senators a few weeks back, to which I rec\'d a reply telling me about
the existing mailing list.
I will see what I can do to promote this list!
Onto the machine itself. I can understand you obsession! I too, have been very
impressed with the quality, power and performance of the said beast. In my 18
month ownership, I have had a few problems which I believe are quite common.
I currently have a few things pending work. The exhaust mid and rear need
replacing and I am just waiting for one of the Authobahn stormers members to
make a new batch of hand-made rear boxes (£150) before I get it done.
I think a bearing might be on the way out too (had one done about 16 months ago
- is this a common problem?)
A gaskit may need replacing soon
The heater matrix will need replacing in the not too distant future.
I\'ll save my stories of previous problems and fixes to the next mail so we
don\'t run out of discussion topics!
Fortunalty, I know a Vauxhall mechanic who is excellent and does my car
privately.
My grandad has just (reluctently) got rid of his H reg 24v and bought a Rover.
The funny thing was, when he returned from the test drive, the salesman said
\'What do you think of that then?\' to which he replied, \'Nice, but not as good
as a Senator\' but he bought it anyway after realising he will not get a new car
to beat it! Hes tried the Omega, BMW 5 series, P reg Jag and none really
inspired him!

Helo Tony

I have started this list for hoping to attract other Senator people who
would like to trade ideas etc. with the Vauxhall Senator in mind, but
anyone with Carltons,Royals,Monza\'s etc. would be more than welcome.

Have you visited the Senator Driver\'s web site the address is :-
http://members.aol.com/abahnstorm/ ?

I haven\'t visited it for a while (I don\'t seem to find the time) so as yet,
I have not been able to post a link for our list so if you get the chance I
would be greatful for the help to get our list going. I am pleased you have
found it and I hope there are many more of us out there who would like to
talk Senator (I am obsesed with them ) or maybe we can help each other with
spares etc.

Perhaps people aren\'t aware of the \" onelist\" system ot think that there is
a charge for membership???? let me know your views, I only found out
about the system recently because I breed Rabbits and there was an artical
about the Rabbit list in our Mag.

Its true to say I haven\' t done anything with the list since I started it
and your e mail came as a nice suprise in amongst my 20 or so from the uk
rabbit list.

Anyway enough of me \"RABBITING\" on I will answer your post:-

I personally own 2 cars

1. Senator 3.0 24v 1991 (H reg) auto in Green
2. Carlton 3.0 GSI 1987 (E reg) manual in Mat Silver

I live in the Leeds (ish) area and use my Senator Daily for going to work
and back, my wife drives the Carlton, she won\'t let me have it (not that I
am realy bothered) but I like to \"drive\" now and again, but it tends to
atract the \"boy racers\" more than the Senator, but either way they tend to
get a shock especially if I am on my own on the Moterway.
We are also keen Caravanners(sorry) and my Senator tows my 25cwt van like
it wasn\'t there.

Don\'t forgett to post soon..

regards

found it and I hope there are many more of us out there who would like to
talk Senator (I am obsesed with them ) or maybe we can help each other with
spares etc.

Perhaps people aren't aware of the " onelist" system ot think that there is
a charge for membership???? let me know your views, I only found out
about the system recently because I breed Rabbits and there was an artical
about the Rabbit list in our Mag.

Its true to say I haven' t done anything with the list since I started it
and your e mail came as a nice suprise in amongst my 20 or so from the uk
rabbit list.

Anyway enough of me "RABBITING" on I will answer your post:-

I personally own 2 cars

1. Senator 3.0 24v 1991 (H reg) auto in Green
2. Carlton 3.0 GSI 1987 (E reg) manual in Mat Silver

I live in the Leeds (ish) area and use my Senator Daily for going to work
and back, my wife drives the Carlton, she won't let me have it (not that I
am realy bothered) but I like to "drive" now and again, but it tends to
atract the "boy racers" more than the Senator, but either way they tend to
get a shock especially if I am on my own on the Moterway.
We are also keen Caravanners(sorry) and my Senator tows my 25cwt van like
it wasn't there.

Don't forgett to post soon..

regards

Howard Thacker...

Hi,
I see that we are the only members at present but I understand that the list was
only set up end Oct 99. I have a K plate 24v Senator that is a fine piece of
engineering.
How about you?
