Hello friends,
As you probably all know, the petitions for the ballot initiative to outlaw some
of the cruelest practices on farms have arrived, and signature-gathering is now
in full swing! (If you have no idea what I'm talking about, please visit
www.humanecalifornia.org!)

There are so many great events around the Bay Area that you all plan or attend,
and I am writing to request that you--yes, YOU!--make sure that there are
signatures gathered at each event you attend. By this I mean that someone (the
organizer, preferably, would take responsibility for it, but it doesn't have to
be) would take responsibility for having petitions at the potlucks, protests,
letter-writing parties, book clubs, vegan food parties, and any other such
event. Perhaps everyone at the event will have already signed, but maybe not! If
someone were to bring extra petitions as well, that would be a fantastic way to
distribute petitions to people who may not have gathered them otherwise or might
not even know about the initiative. It would only take about 30 seconds to
announce and less than that per person who will sign--and then you can go back
to your letter writing, book club, or party! Do you accept my request?!

Everyone gathering a few signatures here and there totally adds up and also
means there is less of a need for people to gather hundreds or thousands of
signatures. All of us gathering signatures are volunteers, and it would be
fantastic to have people already organizing events featuring attendees who are
compassionate to animals would volunteer to gather there!

If you would like to order petitions, please visit www.humanecalifornia.org and
enter your information in our volunteer section. We will make sure to get
petitions out to you promptly.

Finally, we will soon be having a local Bay Area email list specificially for
the campaign. Our database is being modified to facilitate this, but I will
invite you all to join that list and will refrain from regular posts to these
lists at that time.

Thank you for all the good you all do,
Nora

Subject: Don't want to gather signatures? Volunteer in other ways! WORK PARTY TONIGHT!

Hello good people!

We in California are lucky to be able to be part of one of the most significant
campaigns to help animals that the animal protection movement has ever engaged
in. By outlawing battery cages, gestation crates, and veal crates in California,
not only will we protect 20 million animals each year from tremendous suffering
daily in conditions where they cannot even turn around, we will also continue
and strengthen the national movement against the worst abuses on factory farms!
Years from now, I am confident we will look back on this campaign as a catalyst
for huge reforms in the way animals on farms are treated around the country.

As you all know, we are gathering a tremendous number of signatures for this
effort and need 650,000 before we're through. In order to save money for the
second phase of the campaign--commercials and outreach--we are gathering
signatures as an all-volunteer effort and need as many people as possible to
gather as much as possible. But we also have other needs. These are great ways
for you to help if you don't want to do public signature gathering or if you are
not a registered CA voter (and therefore can't gather signatures without
partnering with someone who is)--or if you *are* gathering signatures and want
to do more!

Every Tuesday and Wednesday evening for the next several months, we will be
having a work party in our office in downtown San Francisco from 5:30-9pm. We
need help making packets, sorting petitions, writing mailing labels, stamping
and sealing envelopes, phonebanking volunteers, researching events, and more!
We'll always have some yummy food too! (Feel free to bring some:)

COME TO OUR WORK PARTY TONIGHT OR TOMORROW NIGHT! This is also a great chance to
pick up materials, to meet other great people, and to learn more about the
campaign.

If you would like to come tonight or tomorrow, please email me and I will let
you know our address and the phone number to call when you get here. We are in a
secure building with a secure elevator, so we are protecting this privacy as
well. We are very near public transportation, by Union Square.

There are also other ways to volunteer. They include:
-Researching good events and locations to gather signatures. Some ideas include
festivals, dog parks, health food stores, malls, outside concerts, etc.
-Compiling info in a user-friendly way in a yahoo calendar or google
spreadhseet.
-Requesting donations of food for our work parties or gift certificates as
rewards for our 1000 Club volunteers (people who gather 1000 signatures during
the campaign).
-Publicizing the campaign. (I can email you a flier you can print up and
distribute everywhere about it, or mail you flyers if you know you can
distribute them.)
-Finding or creating opportunities for us to speak or promote the campaign in
different venues, such as at your workplace, an organization you volunteer with,
etc.
-Coordinating and scheduling other volunteers to gather signatures.
-Telling everyone you know about the campaign! Try to get others who care about
animals to collect signatures or volunteer in the ways listed here.
-Providing free photocopying service.
-Donating money, which you can do through our website at
www.humanecalifornia.org <http://www.humanecalifornia.org> .

Thanks to all of you for caring about animals!

Please let me know if you can come tonight or tomorrow!

Dear friends,

Please join us for our next volunteer workday, held in conjunction with East
Bay Animal Advocates (http://www.eastbayanimaladvocates.org/) and Bay Area
Vegetarians (http://bayareaveg.org).

We have selected the second Saturday of every month as volunteer days here
and we are hoping for good turnouts. We would love to have animal lovers
from throughout the Bay Area and San Joaquin valley join us!

Our next volunteer date is Saturday, November 10, 2007, from 10:00-2:00.

Harvest Home was formed to aid homeless and abused domestic and farmed
animals in the San Francisco Bay Area and the San Joaquin valley. We assist
local humane societies and rescue groups with animals-primarily farmed
animals-who, due to their breed, their health, or their personality, cannot
be adopted into permanent homes.

To rsvp and find out more about this event, please email
Karen@..., go to www.harvesthomeanimal.org or call

Hello good people!
Below is an email Californians for Humane Farms sent out yesterday to the
members in our database, and I wanted to keep othr local activists posted. This
is a campaign that I believe has huge potential to make a difference for
animals, and I hope many of you who have not thus far gathered any signatures or
been involved will do so. Learn more or sign up to volunteer at

Hello Bay Area volunteers!

Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and commitment to this campaign to outlaw
some of the cruelest practices on farms-gestation crates, veal crates, and
battery cages-all of which are so cruel that they have been outlawed in the
European Union. We have such a great opportunity to further the momentum
building to reduce the suffering of animals on farms, and the best way we can do
that is by gathering as many signatures as possible these next 4 months! We need
more of you out gathering--and this is just the weekend to get started! Read
on....

In this email:

-GET TRAINED AND CONNECTED!

-ONE OF OUR BEST SIGNATURE-GATHERING OPPORTUNITIES: Sign up to gather signatures
at The Green Festival!

-LET'S HAVE SOME FUN! Meet-up tomorrow and Thanksgiving plans

- TIP, RULE, and FAQ of the week

-GET TRAINED AND CONNECTED!

One of the biggest barriers to people getting out gathering signatures, as far
as we can tell, is people feeling nervous about approaching strangers (or even
friends) to ask them to sign. WHAT WOULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR YOU? Please email
your response to nora@... <mailto:nora@...> .

We are offering training this weekend at the Green Festival in San Francisco.
(See more about the Green Festival, below.) There is a planned training Saturday
morning at 9:30 with Nora Kramer outside the entrance, or, if you cannot be
there for the training, call 415-710-7351 any time during the festival and we
will have someone come find and train you. If you can't be at the Green Festival
but would like training, let your coordinator know or call us at our office:
415-772-0952.

We are also offering training by phone-doing role plays, answering questions you
may have, etc.-over the phone at our San Francisco office. Just call
415-772-0952. Leave us a message if we miss you, and we'll call you back within
the next business day.

Another great way to get trained is to work closely with your coordinator and
other volunteers. If you signed up to gather signatures publicly (rather than
just asking your friends and family) you should be hearing from these
coordinators weekly; if you haven't, please email her, or you can email our Bay
Area coordinator, Nora Kramer, at nora@...
<mailto:nora@...> . Below, you'll find the most updated list
of our Bay Area volunteer coordinators. Remember that these people are
volunteers themselves and have taken on a big (unpaid) job! Please be responsive
to them and offer to help! Please also join the yahoogroup for your area! Email
your coordinator to be added to that list.

-SIGN UP FOR THE GREEN FESTIVAL!

The Green Festival is one of our best signature-gathering opportunities during
the course of the campaign. We want to have at least 5 people scheduled at all
times all weekend; we will have several people out front, as well as people at
various booths inside. This is a fantastic place to gather, especially if you've
never done it before, since most people will be very supportive and since there
will be many other volunteers and opportunities to get trained.

and click on 11/5-11/12 to see what times are most needed that work for you.
Send an email to Laura at lhbeck@... <mailto:lhbeck@...> to sign up
for a shift-or more than one shift! Learn more about the Green Festival,
including location details, at
http://www.greenfestivals.org/content/view/626/281/
<http://www.greenfestivals.org/content/view/626/281/> .

Special thanks to In Defense of Animals for allowing signature-gathering at
their booth all weekend!

- LET'S HAVE SOME FUN!

Signature-gathering can be fun, but it can also be hard work. We want all our
volunteers to have FUN-and we want to have fun, too! We're going to be planning
semi-regular social events for volunteers to meet, connect with other
volunteers, tell funny stories about mean people they talked to while gathering,
and just get to know each other better.

Please join us for the first of these TONIGHT--Thursday (sorry for the short
notice--this was planned organically, and this was the time those people could
make it) at 8:00pm in San Francisco! We'll be at The Orbit Room
http://www.sfstation.com/orbit-room-cafe-a892
<http://www.sfstation.com/orbit-room-cafe-a892> , a bar located at 1900 Market
St. It's just a few blocks away from, and about equidistant between, the Castro
St. and Van Ness MUNI stations, and about half a mile from 16th St. BART. Call
415-710-7351 if you need. Note that you must be 21, and that The Orbit Room only
accepts cash. Get directions at: http://tinyurl.com/2cruf3
<http://tinyurl.com/2cruf3> .

We're also planning a Thanksgiving celebration for volunteers on November 18,
the Sunday before Thanksgiving. This will be another opportunity to get to know
other volunteers and to trade signature-gathering tips! Please email
nora@... <mailto:nora@...> if you are
interested in finding out more about this.

-TIP, RULE, and FAQ of the week

Tip of the Week: Keep it short (unlike this email)! Ask the people you approach
something like, "Will you sign a petition to help animals? We're trying to
require that animals have enough room to turn around and lie down. Will you sign
to get this on the ballot?" The longer you take to actually ask the person, or
the more time you explain things, the fewer people you can actually ask and
therefore the fewer signatures you'll get. Give more details if they ask for
them, but if they really want a lot of info, give them a flyer and direct them
to our website www.humanecalifornia.org <http://www.humanecalifornia.org/>
(which is on the flyer you should all have received).

RULE OF THE WEEK: Don't write anywhere on the petition except for those places
that are required. Notes on the top or bottom or sides could invalidate entire
petitions!

FAQ OF THE WEEK:

Q: If someone is moving or has moved recently, which address should they write
down?

A: People should write the address that they are registered at as of the day
they sign your petition.

Thank you to all of you for your dedication to animals!

Please contact us at 415-772-0952 if there is anything we can do to support you
in gathering signatures!

Hi All,

Anyone want to join me in leafleting the Kelly Clarkson concert tonight? It is at Memorial Auditorium (which is connected to the Convention Center) downtown between J and K Street at 15th.

The concert lets out at 9:50, so I will get there at about 9:30. You’ll have to park quite a few blocks away probably, so allow time for that. I’m not sure where the best spot to leaflet will be, probably on the K side.

My cell number is 916-752-1583.

It should be a great crowd for vegetarian leafleting.

Thanks,

Jack

Yet another vegetarian (mostly vegan) restaurant has opened in Sacramento: "Au Lac Veggie" at 3500 Stockton Blvd. (at 10th Ave., a few blocks south of Broadway). The pan-Asian cuisine is tasty and inexpensive.

Hours are Tues-Fri 11:30-3:00 (lunch) and 5:00-8:30 (dinner), and Sat-Sun 12:00-8:30. The Vietnamese owners are vegetarians, so no worries about ingredient misunderstandings.

Try the veggie chicken salad appetizer ($3.95)--it's huge, it's delicious, and the ingredients are really fresh.

Hello Valley Veg Members!

I'd like to give you a rundown of Vegan Outreach's Adopt a College
(AAC) activities for this semester, Fall of 2007, that took place in
the Sacramento Area.

Vegan Outreach hired me, Brian Grupe, this semester to be the
Sacramento Outreach Coordinator. I visited 40 schools in and around
the Sacramento area and handed out 11,815 booklets (Even if you like
meat and Why Vegan?). I also handed out 1,930 booklets at concerts and
other non-AAC events such as the Sacramento Warped Tour. Volunteer
Eric Paul also did notable work in the Sacramento area, handing out
1,688 booklets at 6 schools.

Victor Tsou and Miranda Robbins, affectionately known as Team Oakland,
visited schools in Sacramento and surrounding areas this semester too.
Victor handed out 47,818 booklets at 80 schools, including schools in
WA, OR, UT, MT and ID. Miranda Robbins, the newly hired Bay Area
Correspondent for Vegan Outreach, handed out 27,917 booklets at 52
schools this semester.

See below for a list of schools leafleted in the Sacramento area in
the last 6 months.

You can see what's been done all over CA here:
http://www.veganhealth.org/colleges/CA

This semester, Vegan Outreach volunteers and employees handed out
406,270 at 449 schools and counting as the final numbers from the end
of the semester continue to be added. Details are here:
http://www.veganhealth.org/colleges/semtotals

To get involved check out: http://www.veganhealth.org/colleges/howto

Thank you to everyone who donated to make this work possible. It is
your donations that allow booklets to be printed, so please remember
to think of Vegan Outreach this holiday season!

FORWARD AND CROSS-POST WIDELY!!!!!
(For more info go to www.freewebs.com/freelucy.)

Lucy was spared tonight, but is due for execution first thing in the morning (12.20.07)

We need you to CALL, FAX AND EMAIL as much as you possibly can starting NOW and through the day tomorrow.

If you can send one fax and email, you can send TO ALL OF THEM! Remind these people that they are ELECTED OFFICIALS!

Remember to mention that we got over 12,000 signatures in less than 72 hours to save Lucy's life! This is an international issue that WILL NOT GO AWAY BY KILLING LUCY!!

Email, Fax and Phone lists are below, as well as a sample letter.

Form Letter:

Dear .....

My name is .....

I have learned about what is happening with a dog named Lucy who has been ordered killed because of one incident involving another dog.

According to your local laws and California Law, Lucy should be ordered back home with terms, restrictions and conditions, and/or
sent to one of the many dog rescues that have offered to take her for the rest of her life.

There has been a gross miscarriage of justice and it is up to you to help and do something about this.

Time is of the essence.

I have heard that there were misstatements by City Attorney Kahn that Lucy has a history. She doesn't and the record proves it.

The California Hayden Bill states:

"1834.4. (a) It is the policy of the state that no adoptable animal should be euthanized if it can be adopted into a suitable home....
(b) It is the policy of the state that no treatable animal should be euthanized. A treatable animal shall include any animal that is not adoptable but that could become adoptable with reasonable efforts...."

State law mandates her release.

Please grant leniency and spare this innocent life.

Sincerely,

.....

Hi All,

I ran across this website (from the FARM newsletter) and found the articles interesting:

http://cspinet.org/takeaction/index.html

There is a "Take Action" section of the website where you can petition your relative legislators on various topics.

Fellow veg-heads,

I am running a 10K in Santa Cruz on April 13th 2008 and I need your help to raise $1,000!  10 kilometers is 6 miles - more than I have ever run (so far I've gotten up to 4 miles)!

The proceeds are donated to Vegan Outreach (VO), an organization that focuses on handing as many vegetarian pamphlets to students at universities nationwide.  Your money will contribute to paying for pamphlets such as Why Vegan?, Try Vegetarian and Even if You Like Meat.

VO focuses on reaching younger people and so far this semester they have handed pamphlets to over 300,000 students on 336 college and high school campuses. Every single day people go vegetarian due to they influence.

Please visit my fundraising website for more info and to donate securely:

Thank you SO much in advance for your donation!  Please forward to anyone else who may be interested!

Hey everyone,

I'm SO excited to announce that our victory party for getting the historic
Californians for Humane Farms ( www.humanecalifornia.org
<http://www.humanecalifornia.org> ) initiative on the ballot will be happening
on Saturday, April 5, from 7-9:30 pm at the San Francisco SPCA!

There is good parking there, and it is not far from 16th St. Mission BART (you
can also take the 22 bus there from BART). The address is 250 Florida
St.www.sfspca.org
<https://webmail.hsus.org/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.sfspca.org>

Already have plans for that night? I respectfully request that you change them!

The party will be held in the lobby of Maddie's Center, which will be a perfect
spot for people to get to meet one another, to nosh on yummy food, drink great
donated wine, and celebrate and be celebrated for the AMAZING accomplishments of
so many activists!

You and your friends and family are welcome whether you/they were active with
the campaign or not!

If you would like to help with setup, cleanup, preparing/donating food, drinks,
or the planning and prep for the party, please let me know!

Nora

Please note that although an injunction is in place to
stop this program, a sea lion was trapped,
anesthetized and euthanised this week.

A U.N. report from just this past November found that a full 18% of
global warming emissions come from raising chickens, turkeys, pigs,
and other animals for food. That's about 40% more than all the cars,
trucks, airplanes, and all other forms of transport combined (13%).
It's also more than all the homes and offices in the world put
together (8%).

A stray, possibly feral, cat just had kittens in the garage of a
friend who is definitely not a cat person. Does anyone know anything
about feline rescue options locally for removing the very skittish mom
and kittens to a more welcoming place (and eventually get the mother
cat spayed)? Or can you recommend who would know? I'm willing to help
out financially, but I don't have the means (e.g., car) of actually
moving the cat(s). My friend lives in a high-crime neighborhood and is
afraid to leave the garage door open for the mother cat and risk being
burglarized, but of course she doesn't want to keep the mother away
from the kittens.
