Roland,

I added 28 photos to your Cory Automatics album. I had wanted to
annotate them like I do in my own album, but there seems to be no
provision for me to do so.

There are three lines of Cory Automatics to my knowledge--ACB, DEA,
and EAB. The EABs are aluminum and were called the Coralume. There are
different combinations of tops and bottoms in my photos, some are real
and some are Frankenpots, but they are as I got them. I know that
there was a converation about some of the combinations and how well
they work. I have not tried out any of them as am more a collector
than a coffee afficinado but I have used a few of the glass Corys.

Any comments about the collection would be appreciated.

Hi Steven, when you say annotate the pics, I'm not sure what you are referring
to. There should be a line for you to include a
description. I just uploaded some pics yesterday on the mixer group and I was
able to do this.

Roland,

In my photo album, when I add photos and view them, there is an Edit
box. When I click on it I can change the name of the photo and add a
description. When I tried it on your album, it is simply not there. It
could be that since you initiated the album, only you can edit the
photos although others can add photos to it. I would like to add a
little text with each photo but it may not be possible.

Hi Steven, I went and checked and it's a public group so anyone can add photos.
I tried adding a photo to another album called HV
Euro, and on the upload page it has space to include a description while
uploading the photo.

I went ahead and added a test photo, and it allowed me to insert the title and
description while adding the photo, but then once the
photo is added I am not allowed to go back and edit, or delete that photo. I
called the photo "test photo" and in the description
field I typed in "testing description" before uploading it. I'm guessing that
would be where you want to annotate it.

Evidently, some of the other folders were created as private, as I do not even
see an "add photo" link when I open them up.

Sorry I can't be of more use.

I wonder if Larry adds you to the moderators list for a few hours, maybe that
will give you rights to go in and edit your pics.
That might be the easier solution.

Roland and Steven,

I am on my way out the door and just saw all these
post. Either tonight when I get in or tomorrow I will
try and see what I have the settings on.. I would
think you could add to the photos in an open folder?
I noticed that the photos do have the title and short
discription, isn't that all that will go in those
albums space wise?

We had all the other Sunbeam vacpots, but had been unable to
find the elusive C40. It is unusual in that it has the chrome
plated bottom but has an aluminum top. I even posted a good
while ago on this site asking "Has anybody ever SEEN a C40?"

Well, much to our delight, a Sunbeam C40 recently appeared on
eBay but many who would be interested probably didn't see it
because there was a misspelling in the title. It said
SUMBEAM instead of Sunbeam. It was eBay item number 290132690933
if you'd like to have a look. Amazingly, we purchased it for
only $12.00 so we are extra thrilled about that.

The C40 works beautifully but did have some cleaning issues
on the inside of the pot.

Now we have a Sunbeam Coffeemaster "Royal Flush" of sorts since
we have the C20, C30, C30 Beehive, C40, and C50. All work well
and we actually use them (in rotation with many other coffee
makers in our collection). You can check out the collection
in our photo album ("Ron and Edgar's Coffee Makers") on this
site.

Now, it's on to the next challenge...find the exceedingly rare
C30 with the red bakelite handles and trim!!!

In addition to the Sunbeam Coffeemaster C40 we recently
got on eBay, we also got a Perfecto vacpot. These do not
seem to be nearly as common as some. There's a photo of
it in our album.

The Perfecto came with its original filter and a Cory
filter rod as well. We thought this might have been an
indication that the original owner didn't like the
performance of the Perfecto filter and had substituted
the Cory filter rod. We made coffee in the Perfecto this
morning and used the original filter. It did well and did
not seem to allow any more sediment than other vacpot
filters we have used.

Hi Ron and Edgar,

Nice finds.. That filter reminds me of the Duralux on
that it has the spring clip to help hold it down.. If
it works like the duralux filter it should make good
coffee.
Great find on the sunbeam.. I am always surprised how
people end up finding some of these odd spelling
items.

Ron, I remember when you asked about the C40 and even posted photos of
one of the two that I have and a 1958 catalog entry for the C40. I even
put up a photo of the a C40 next to a C30. Neither of the C40s were
complete--one was really banged up and they both lacked the bakelite
lid. I saw the ebay auction for your C40 both times it was offered--the
first time no one bid on it. I thought about bidding since it appeared
to be in good shape. You really got a good deal on it. The auction
photo helped me realize that the lid from a C50 fits the top pot.

I have re-photographed the complete C40 and will replace my older
photos.

Well, there's a spelling error that cost the seller a bundle. Is there any difference between the bottom of this pot and the C-30 except the model number?

Hi all,

As a side question, I happend to notice in an antique mall near here an Atomic
Expresso
machine, one of which is like it on ebay with and asking price of 450.00. I
know I have
seen some go for pretty good prices but not really sure what they end up at
usually. I
think the one I saw is the same goldish brown like the one on ebay.. any idea
what it is
really worth? the one is saw was for 140.00 I think.

This is a hot subject of debate. There are programs out there and I think a few
websites as well that will scramble up letters in a
search term in an attempt to find misspelled auctions. The theory is that a
misspelled auction will have fewer lookers, hence less
competition so a better price for the buyer. However, it's already been
disproved. Several test auctions were done in which they
misspelled the item title and the items ended on average 35% more bids and
higher selling price than the non-misspelled auctions.

Larry, unless it's MINT as in NEVER used, in the original box with original
instructions, it's worth about $100-$200 depending on
the actual condition.
I believe a value of $400-$600 for a MINT one as described above would be a fair
price.

And for the benefit of any who may not know...the word Expresso (with an x) is
an American slaughtering of the actual word, which is
espresso (with an s). It has nothing to do with making the drink fast, rather
"espresso" comes from the term to express--as in
applying pressure (and other conditions) to force something out of...for
example, expressing the juice from an orange, or expressing
the essence or oils from olives, etc. Espresso implies the way it's made, has
nothing to do with "making it fast".

Sarah,

There does not appear to be any difference in the bottoms
of the C30 and C40 except, of course, the designation of the
model on the label. Steven (oribatid) has posted in his photo
album a listing from a catalog that suggests that the C40 is just
a C30 bottom with the aluminum upper.

I have been using “HEET”, a common gas-line antifreeze composed of methyl alcohol. It is available at most hardware and auto supply sores at a modest price.

Be sure to buy the bright yellow stylish 12 ounce container and note that it says methyl alcohol on the rear. There are other antifreeze products made from unsuitable ingredients.

I appreciated your much earlier reply to my question about the
Sunbeam C40 vacpot along with the photos. Thanks, now, for
the added photos of the C40.

Can you tell us anything about the years of production for the
various models of the Sunbeam automatic vacpots? We are aware
that the C20 was introduced in conjunction with the 1939 World's
Fair.

Ron, I do not know when the C20 was introduced. I can check with my
catalog pages and see when the earliest date is. The Sunbeam Model 14
that I have in my album is from the middle to late 1930s and it is
older than the C20s.

Hi Steve, I never would have even thought about using HEET for a alcohol lamp
fuel, I will keep that in mind, ocassionally I do see it avail here in the South
even though our winters are mild. I did try some Isopropyl rubbing alcohol, but I
was not impressed with the burning results, too much water in fuel and a cooler
flame. Did get by a home depot and picked up a can of denatured alcohol and the
results and the time to boil water in the lower vessel was much more faster even
though I first pre-heated the water by microwave method for 2 minutes. I can say
that I am impressed with the overall performance of this mini-vacpot,and the
taste of the coffee when done for winning this on eBay for $15. It was delivered
this past Thursday, I will upload some pics as well shortly to my album of this
from north-south brewing. Take Care

Gary - There are a couple of tricks with the GE autos. It sometimes
helps to depress the plastic button, then set the pot on the stove
and let the weight of the pot push down on the metal magnet assembly
while you slowly let up on the plastic button. This seems to better
guarantee that the magnet in the center of the stove will actually
make contact with the electrical switch down inside the stove. What
happens next is that as the water hetas and heads up it will at a
cleverly devised point cause the metal plunger in the stem to raise
upwards thus breaking a magnetic connection in the stove which then
causes the stove to go from high heat to low heat where it should be
for the brew cycle. Larry is correct that these stoves often don't
cool down fast enough to bring the water back down in a timely
fashion, so they must be removed from the stove to initiate a good
strong siphon action when a few minutes or so have passed.
Sometimes the magnet in the stove has lost strength due to age. The
magnet can be revived by placing a strong neodymium disc magnet atop
the metal center piece and letting it sit there overnight. It will
remagnetize the mechanism. Bo Long

Dear Group,

I have just created a new album with examples of my Sunbeam
Coffeemasters. I added 20 new photos and moved two of the C-40 into
the new album. I still need to add photos of the C-50 but will do that
tomorrow.

My original oribatids album is very large (about 155 photos) so in the
near future I plan on creating new albums (e.g. Kent Vacuum
Coffeemakers) and moving those photos into the new one.

Steven thanks for the pics and the info. You have contributed some great pics
which I'm sure we all have appreciated.
I'm inclined to think that organizing the photo albums by the brand and type of
vacpot is a good idea, it makes it easier for
looking them up.

Roland and Larry,

Today I created a few new albums and moved photos into them. However,
in two of the albums (Sunbeam Coffeemasters and Kent Coffeemakers) I
cannot move the last photo in the album to where I think it should be.
I tried multiple times and while I could move the photo, after the
SAVE, the photo would still be at the end of the album. I even logged
off and then tried again.

I also moved my Narrow Necked Corys into their own album. I added a
Farberware album (including two photos of my newest addition, a Model
10). I also added three photos of the Model C-50 to the Sunbeam album.

Dear Group,

My oribatids album was getting too large and hard to navigate so I
have been creating new albums and moving photos into them and also
adding new photos. The new albums are generally by brand (Cory,
Sunbeam, Silex, Farberware) or by a classification (Stainless Steel
Stovetop Coffeemakers).

I also created a group album--Displays of Coffeeware. So, if you have
some photos of how you display your coffee pots, you should be able to
put them in there.

As I add photographs, they may duplicate what some of you already have
in one of your albums. I hope that this does not offend anyone, but I
would like to have as complete a representation as possible in the album.

Today I created Cory Wide Necked Coffeemakers. I am not finished since
all that I was able to get in were the DLU/DLL and DRL/DLU models (and
only the black handled models). I will add more photos in the near future.
