Greetings from San Diego.
Please email jpg of "Krazy Katie" immediately.
Also, please advise if I should be acquiring a second FEZ for her for the
October herf.

Is this the 17 year old we heard about?
Is she prepared for a guy in a smoking jacket and fez?

Sorry guys (and gal) but last night at a house party i got to talking about
VACHE and "Krazy Katie" has decided to join us on the 19th. I didn't invite
her, because i can't stand her, but i did say "oh it's open to anyone who
wants to come and enjoy a cigar." So apparently she's coming... Once again
I am sorry. If she stays sober and doesn't touch anyone i think it might be
fine... But i like to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. So I'm
sorry. Let's just get that out in the open right now.

I must re-iterate that there will NOT be garments for the Sept. Herf. The
October herf may be a different matter however (after all, it's halloween)

I have sent an email to the Mountain Shadow Pub to ask if they would accept 8-10 cigar smokers:
http://www.shadowpub.com
It is located out in North Burnaby, at the base of Burnaby Mountain. I remember Mike talking about the old "Blue Boy" as another possible location.
Finally, it might also work if we alternated locations, i.e. one month out east for the Maple Ridge boys, one month out west for the Vancouver boys.
Just a thought.

PS Spoon, if we organized a weekend herf so you could come up from Seattle when would be good for you?

Woody's OK
Will Geoff be wearing his smoking jacket?
I found the "anti red-eye" button on my camera.
But I can't find the "fez" setting.

Well we know woody's is a welcoming establishment. And i have no problems
going there, however it is a bit of a strech for some members as it is in
coquitlam, remember mike is coming in from main and marine... I would say
that central burnaby would be better as it is more centralized in the GVRD,
however finding a location would be the key point. I'm going to back peddle
a bit and quash the lougheed mall area as it is just a few blocks up from
woodys! let's keep our ears to the pavement and try to find a spot in
burnaby/new west that will accomodate us, but keep woody's as the Unoffical
spot.

well put Kevin. I encourage such research, however I must ask again - If we
are attempting to get a "rep" with Woody's why change venues?

The 19th is good for me.
I don't know the Metro Town area at all, so cannot comment on suitable
venues in this vicinity. As far as cigar friendly establishments in the
Lougheed Mall area go, there is a "Foggy Dew" on North Road, across from the
Lougheed Mall, between Austin and the Lougheed Highway, right next to the
Executive Suites. While I have not personally indulged in cigar smoking in
this establishment, I have been there in the presence of wafts of the
unmistakably pungent smoke usually associated with cigars. In addition, I
have not been chastised for smoking my pipe in there either. On the
contrary, I have usually received most complimentary comments from the staff
and patrons alike on the rather pleasant aroma of the pipe. I would
recommend, however, that we call or, better still, undertake some
reconnaissance to establish the house rules regarding cigar smoking prior to
attempting a Vache "Staff-Meeting", unannounced. I would be only too happy
to undertake this exercise as the Foggy Dew is reasonably close to where I
live and, with somewhat of a stretch of the imagination, could even be
considered to be on my way home.
Any further thoughts?
Regards,
Kevin.

K,
Herf time! And here I am with a new box of JR's (Honduran) Punch I need to
crack open!
19th works for me... As for "near lougheed mall," that sounds like Woody's!
I'll find out about The Mountain Shadow Inn, although that's more North
Burnaby than Metrotown's South Burnaby.

One thing that has worked well with my professional groups to maintain a
good attendance, is to designate a particular night of the month as a herf
night.
Ex. "Every third Tuesday"
That way folks can plan activities in advance, and are not scrambling due
to a last minute herf announcement.
For many years we had a Biomed group that met "first Tue. of the month" at
the UBC Faculty Club, and folks ( sometimes from all over Canada) would
show up because they knew "first Tues? : must be Vancouver BME meeting"
We are not quite so successfull with our current IBET group, partly because
we meet on the " 4th Thursday" and a lot of folks mistake that for "the
last Thurs." and get their calendars all messed up.
I would like to have a fixed date in my PalmPilot that reminds me "it's
herf time".
Of course I would have to check for 17 year old coeds before I "whipped it
out".

Hmm… an interesting question.
I think the place to start (assuming that there is no location of “Fez-R-Us”
in town, is “I love Hats & Accessories” on Broadway, 1/2 block east of
Granville. They may or may not be able to help you.
There is also a place in Seattle, I’m told, that is a splendid source of
Head-Apparel. Near the Market, I think - certainly in the Downtown Area.
Or, you can just mug a the next Shriner as he passes in one of those little

K,

The one comment I might make about our herfs (Geoff ducks for cover) is that
for the uninitiated they could be intimidating. What I mean by that is I am
sure there are many "casual" cigar smokers out there - People who would
enjoy getting together once a month with a bunch of other folks to smoke a
cigars, but who aren't up on all the cigar lingo and cigar culture. (At the
risk of making assumptions I suspect you could put Lisa in that category,
and other friends I might bring into the circle would too.) At the New West
"tugboat" herf the conversation delved very deeply into talk of Rubustos and
Churchills and the like - ISOMs and ASC. You saw something slightly
different at the Woody's herf - My end of the table seemed to discuss more
general issues of interest - Motorcycles, immigration, South Africa,
travel - The other end seemed to have more cigar-heavy topics. This may
work best.
I'm not saying cigar-heavy is bad, we are a cigar club after all, but if we
want to keep people interested we have to sensitive to the conversations
that happen at these events.

It is a good trick, provided the management that got the letter is there
when you buy the cigars!

On Thursday August 30th I board a plane and fly to my brother's wedding in
New Mexico. I return the evening of Monday, Sept. 3. I am in town the
following week, and board another plane of the afternoon of Sunday Sept. 9
to fly to San Diego on business. I return from that trip on the evening of
Thursday Sept. 13. Bottom line? Either week of Tues 4 - Sat 8 or after
Mon 16th.

I agree - The "club" is better. It would be great if VACHE got the "rep" in
town as being _the_ group that cared about cigars. But I think to make that
happen we need to work hard to increase the turnout at the herfs. (Don't
get me wrong - I am not saying people aren't working hard.) I would think
if we have at least 10 people that are getting together regularly that would
be a good start. I mean it would be perfect if those cigar distributors
started realized VACHE was a force, and then started gifting us sticks. We
could herf 'em, and then report back.

Yes, I agree! The next time we are the shops we should ask them if they
would put up a notice (after we buy a couple cigars!). It might also be
worthwile if each VACHEr bought a cigar online from local vendors and asked
if they'd include a notice about us in their email list. I am sure there
are lots of smokers who are not on ASC - Usenet is still intimidating to a
lot of people.
My only thought might be that as the winter turns (And with the smoking ban
now Apr 30th) it might be worthwhile trying one more indoor location other
than Woody's - i.e. The Jolly Taxpayer. (Remaining at all times sensitive
to people's travel distances!)

Exactly. We could even get our pick in CA (shudder.)

Precisely - For the next couple of herfs our goal should be to get as many
people out as possible!

As some of you may have sussed, VACHE (the Vancouver Area Cigar Herfing
Ensemble) has started its own mailing list, via Yahoo Groups.
Messages sent to the mailing list will be disseminated to all members, as
will all replies. The list is unmoderated (for now), so all are welcome to
join and add to the fray. It is not our intention to fracture the ASC
community - ASC remains the premier location for general cigar chit chat.
The VACHE mailing list is useful for those topics that are
Vancouver-centric, or not appropriate to ASC (such as ongoing discussions
about our logo, my new fez or debate as to the date of our next herf.)
All interested parties are welcome to join in the fun and subscribe
(especially those online from Vancouver, Washington).
To subscribe to the mailing list, send an email with the subject header
"subscribe" to:
vache_vancouver-subscribe AT yahoogroups.com
To post a message to the group which will be received by all the
subscribers, send an email to:
vache_vancouver AT yahoogroups.com
To unsubscribe to the list, send an email detailing why you don't love us
anymore to:
vache_vancouver-unsubscribe AT yahoogroups.com
In all cases, in the email addresses above, delete the spaces and replace
the "AT" with the obvious symbol which is sometimes, but not always, located
on the [2] key...

Excellent VACHE photo michael...
I shrank it a little and threw it up on the web. If you want to post it to
