At the Unity Church

But thou, O Beauty, art a pledge
That there is purpose in thy mould;

A Summerland that grows not old
Nor yields to Winter's dread embrace
Its heritage of green and gold
And thou shalt grow from grace to grace
Immortal in thy native place.
Please bring a memento of your Beloved Dead to place on an altar, if you wish
(use discretion with fragile, valuable, or irreplaceable items).
This ritual is suitable for children who are not afraid of the dark.
Please bring something for the potluck and a donation of
$5.00 per person or $12.00 per family (if not bringing food, add $5.00).

GUIDELINES FOR RITUAL ENJOYMENT
Here are some guidelines for those unfamiliar with Pagan rituals in general, or
our approach specifically –
Consecrated objects absorb energy easily (become "charged"); please do not touch
items without the owner's permission.
Personal purification and ritual bathing should be performed before you arrive.
Ritual requires a clear mind, so please refrain from the use of drugs or misuse
of alcohol before arriving.
Remember to take care of your needs (medicine, restroom, etc.) before the ritual
begins. Once the circle is cast, it becomes sacred space and should not be
disrupted lightly. If there is an emergency and you need to leave, a gate will
be opened to let you out of circle.
When the pre-ritual grounding begins, it is time to set aside casual socializing
and focus on the task at hand. There will be plenty of time during the feast for
conversation and merrymaking.
Do not be surprised by humor – laughter is a gift of the goddess. Our attitude,
conduct and energy should reflect both the joyousness and solemnity of our
celebratory religion.
Children are welcome, but should remain under the watchful eye of their parents
to avoid disruptions and accidents.
If you do not comply with these guidelines or show respect to the Goddess and
God or our religion, you may be asked to leave, and will certainly not be
invited back.
You have been invited in Love and Trust. Please return our confidence by
remaining discrete when discussing this ritual and its participants outside the
Pagan community.
I'd like to invite you all to the South Bay Circles Mabon ritual on Saturday,
Sept. 26th.
Here is the formal invitation.

dates to choose from.
If you interested in attending this ritual, please contact me and I

church spaces (to improve the church budget), for weddings and other events and

sanctuary or the fireside room some evenings, usually a Friday night. Is there
an interest in doing this for the future? I have some input to a church group
(the Wedding Task Force). If CUUPS wants to reserve space on a regular basis,
we need to let this task force know now. If we do not want space on a regular
basis, we need to be aware that any reservations need to be made well in
advance, especially for Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. It looks like space
reservations could get much harder to come by for those days.

Hello and Winter Blessings!
Two notes about tomorrow's (Feb. 2nd) ritual at the church.
1) You can ignore what was on the South Bay Circles invitation about
the entrance fee. For CUUPS folks (and church folks), any donation is
strictly voluntary.
2) I have a key for the back door, but not for the Fireside Room. If
anyone with *that* key is coming, please let me know. Otherwise, I
may give Rev. Nancy (or anyone I can find) a "panic call" tomorrow
morning!
Many Thanks! --

In keeping with the nature of the ritual, feel free to bring an
unbreakable object. We don't care what it is (no animals or edibles)
-- silly, serious, colorful, bland, noisy, quiet, small, not too
large, tasteful, kitchy, soft, hard, squishy, natural, artificial...
We promise you that no objects will be harmed during the making of
this ritual.
Due to an unforeseen appliance failure, the church has no working
heater at this time. Dress warmly. If you have a space heater and
extension cords to lend for the ritual, may the gods bless you and
yours for all eternity.
We recommend you eat lunch before you come.
Because the church has an event scheduled at 4:00, we must be off the
premises by 3:00. The ritual will start and end on time, and stick to
its planned schedule. We appreciate your cooperation.

What do folks think - churchwide or just CUUPS? The labyrinth walk Sandra
refers to is not actually "walking the labyrinth", but using it as a spiral
place to walk, i believe; right, Sandra?

>As I think I mentioned earlier, I estimate that we can only accommodate 25
persons or so walking on the labyrinth. More than that and it may get awkward.
So...do we want to advertise the Samhain ritual to the whole church? If we get
more than 25 persons, some may have to "sit out" the journey to the ancestors
and do it as a sitting guided meditation instead. Of course if we don't
advertise the event to the whole church, we may not get very many celebrants at
all. I'm still mulling it over. How many people have we gotten at CUUPs events
advertised to the whole church? As I remember, we got more than 25 at Frank's
Bridgit ritual.

>CUUPs Members: Please save the date and time--Sunday, October 28, at 7:30 p.m.
in the sanctuary of the church--for a Samhain ritual honoring the ancestors. We
can share refreshments in the Fireside Room after the ritual. More details
later, but I wanted to let you know the date. For those of you who asked, this
date should not conflict with South Bay Circles' Samhain ritual, which will be
the next weekend. Sandra Lewellen Jones

Everyone-
Sandra Jones has created an ancestors focused ritual which she has offered to do
for Samhain. The best dates would be the weekend before Halloween (the 31st is
Wed.): Friday the 26th, Saturday the 27th, or Sunday the 28th. These evenings
are currently still available on the church calendar, but we should choose ASAP.
What do you think?

A RITUAL FOR BRIGID Thursday, February 8, 7:45 pm in the sanctuary of the First
Unitarian Church of San Jose. As the Earth begins to quicken, we honor Brigid,
the great Irish goddess of fire, smithcraft, and poetry. We take a symbolic
trip to Brigid's Well, to gaze into the depths and see what the new season
holds. Join members of our church's CUUPs group for this simple, meditative
ritual. Please arrive at 7:45 to prepare for an 8 pm ritual, which will last no
more than an hour.
Unfortunately, we will not be having a CUUPS meeting this evening.
First of all -- I know some of you are most anxious to have
rituals. However, no one has volunteered to get the rituals going
again after our summer break. Many of us, who help present rituals
for CUUPS and other groups, have pretty full plates -- between our
work, our families, and our other pagan activities. We need some
way of spreading the work around the group.
Second -- me myself -- I am committed to an open mic activity this
evening, so cannot come tonight. This open mic is scheduled to
occur now every month on the 2nd Friday. Currently it looks like
I'm only free for sure on the 4th Friday of the month. That may
change, depending on how my open mic hostings evolve. But, for now,
I'm only available for CUUPS on the 4th Friday.
I'd be interested in hearing other ideas and perspectives. I know
there is interest in CUUPs here in San Jose -- it just seems to be a
question of who can contribute to rituals, and when.
Thanks -- I appreciate your interest!!
Bill
Hi Everyone!
I hope you all had a pleasant summer!
I think our original plan was to meet for our usual 2nd Friday of the
month meeting, in September. So, after a summer's rest, we would
start up again some time around "Water Sunday" (I'm not quite sure
when that is this year).
In any case, our meeting would be Friday, September 8th.
Unfortunately, I will be in Salinas that weekend, helping to run the
East of Eden writing conference.
I won't mind if other folks meet on Sept. 8th, though.
How do people feel about meeting then? Do we still want to meet on
the 2nd Fridays? I may or may not be available.
