"Captain, we are being hailed." the news from COMM broke the professional
tension that had gripped everyone aboard.

"Well, they seem to have learned our language fast enough." Captain Vertiax
rubbed his holographic hands together in anticipation, "Do we have a visual?"

"Affirmative."

"On screen then."

[Greetings and salutations to every species and every being aboard the USS
ODYSSEY from the United Federation of Planets.] the view screen showed a human
or very human-like face a elderly man with silver hair, blue eyes and a kind
smile, [I am Pax. On behalf of the inhabitants of Locusa I bit you welcome.]

Vertiax heard the message acoustically and at the same time telepathically
inside the intricate bio-electric field that made the Medusan brain, transmitted
in his native language. Most likely everyone on the bridge heard the old man in
his or her native tongue as well.

"I would love to introduce ourselves to the inhabitants of Locusa as well."
Vertiax replied, "But it seems you have taken care of the introductions

Pax bowed his head. [My sincere apologies Captain Vertiax. As soon as the
gathered data suggested that you would find our scan intrusive, we terminated
the beam. It was never our intention to offend and much less to harm you. My
special apologies go to Commander Kallesin ´n Galeda. It has been a while since
we encountered true artificial intelligence and missed to fine-tune our devices
for that possibility. He will not experience further discomfort from our side.]

"Hopefully you won´t find it too intrusive if I inquire then about the true
purpose of your scan."

Pax signed [We have known conflict in the past Captain Vertiax. For that reason
we wish to know whom we contact before we extend an invitation to passing
species.]

Pax returned the nod, [Very observant Commander. Of course I am not human or a
member of any other species in your galaxy for that matter. What you see is
comparable to one of your holograms. We have long shed the need for physical
bodies."

"If I understand correctly," Vertiax resumed the conversation, "You are offering
us shore leave on your world?"

[Exactly Captain.]

"What do you expect in return?"
