Class Dismissed, Part Two

"...'long goodbyes are for sissies'."

Lt. Kyle Murphy sat in silence for the first part of
the meeting. Meeting. Felt more like a sacking than a
meeting.

Lt. Halsted sat at his right, Lt. Biaje to his left.

The rumors were true. Fleet was splitting up the crew.
A major shakeup. Not unexpected given their spotty
history. There was even scuttlebutt the ship was
cursed, what with the death of an XO, the death of a
Captain, the deaths of a chief engineer and an
Operations officer, all in the span of five years, and
it wasn't even war time. Thinking back, he'd served
under Captain Karasov, Captain Quintale, Captain
McCracken, for a brief time, Commander Walker and most
recently Captain March. More XO's than he could name –
Andrews, the dead one. Clouseau, McKay, Drake, others
in between. He'd been on Kronshtadt longer than any
officer in this room had been – and seen every
department head on board when he arrived leave, and
seen their replacements come and go.

A year ago, he had the chance to get out. Lt. Easton
had been his second, and they had talked. Easton
wanted his own team, and had frankly discussed with
Kyle his options – requesting a transfer to a SAR
chief position, or if Kyle was thinking of moving on,
he'd stay. At the time, Kyle had no thoughts about
moving on, and had told Bret. And Bret Easton had been
the one to move on. And Kyle had stayed.

As the year passed, Kyle found himself thinking of his
family, and living in the city he grew up in. There
were jobs there, Starfleet jobs, jobs that he could do
and make a difference. Here, he did nothing, or next
to it. Weeks and weeks training without a call,
without a real need of his expertise. And then they
get a call, and warp to some trouble, and in a day or
less, they've done what they can do, and then more
weeks of nothing to do but training and more training.

What a life.
