Hi Shipmates!

I've update our online web pages that lead to general information and group web sites supporting the Class of 1981. This has been long overdue and I apologize for the delay. All content is being maintained using Google docs which is easier to use than the FTP method and facilitates collaboration of online content among our volunteers. As always, if you have any suggestions or need support, I can be reached at my Facebook account .

For our volunteers, let me know which pages you'd like to update, and I'll provide access.

All the Best,
Bob K.

I have two tickets for the Navy-Notre Dame game in South Bend Nov 7th.
Fortunately plans have changed and I'll be on leave in Europe. The tickets seem
decent, about 30 yd line, 40 rows up. Currently this section is going for
$200-250 on resale sites. I'm offering them to classmates first for face plus
postage or we can meet at the Air Force game. I just want a Navy fan to use them
and keep the streak at South Bend alive!! I request just that they 'stay in the
family.'

Jim,

It seems like there is a lot of potential for new jobs in this area. Here is a recent presentation by a professor from the University of Colorado on job growth:

Not sure where everyone is in life right now, but for those interested in government service and renewable energy, here is web site where the Dept of Energy has its vacancy info.

http://www1. eere.energy. gov/office_ eere/jobs. html

I've never seen it like this before, as the door is wide open for bringing in new people of all ages and experience levels. Many of you will qualify for a veteran's preference on these positions, which is a good thing.

If you've got children interested in energy and completing grad school, take a look at the Presidential Management Fellow program.

I got this note from Dave Mutzabaugh. Let's see if we can put together a good
showing for this. Will be fun.

Sept 17th is the next golf tournament. We are going to win the Fragile Award
and put it on the Bridge of the Geo H. W. Bush. Skipper said so…..

That means it's time to take a strain. I want a minimum of 5 foursomes for this
event to ensure a decisive win. As I said before you don't have to hit the
ball, just be present. If you can't find $40 bucks I'll spot you. Jim A, can
you give widest possible dissemination in your AOR. If you need a place to stay
you can bunk at Chez Mutz. If you don't have a car I'll help you find a ride.
I can't make it any easier for you.

We've forgotten what is important to us .....

We're hearing a lot today about big splashy memorial services.

I want a nationwide memorial service for Darrell "Shifty" Powers.

Shifty volunteered for the airborne in WWII and served with Easy Company of the 506Th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st Airborne Infantry. If you've seen Band of Brothers on HBO or the History Channel, you know Shifty. His character appears in all 10 episodes, and Shifty himself is interviewed in several of them.

I met Shifty in the Philadelphia airport several years ago. I didn't know who he was at the time. I just saw an elderly gentleman having trouble reading his ticket.. I offered to help, assured him that he was at the right gate, and noticed the "Screaming Eagle", the symbol of the 101st Airborne, on his hat.

Making conversation, I asked him if he'd been in the 101st Airborne or if his son was serving. He said quietly that he had been in the 101st. I thanked him for his service, then asked him when he served, and how many jumps he made.

Quietly and humbly, he said "Well, I guess I signed up in 1941 or so, and was in until sometime in 1945 . . . " at which point my heart skipped.

At that point, again, very humbly, he said "I made the 5 training jumps at Toccoa, and then jumped into Normandy . . . . do you know where Normandy is?" At this point my heart stopped.

I told him yes, I know exactly where Normandy was, and I know what D-Day was. At that point he said "I also made a second jump into Holland , into Arnhem ." I was standing with a genuine war hero . . . . and then I realized that it was June, just after the anniversary of D-Day.

I asked Shifty if he was on his way back from France , and he said "Yes. And it's real sad because these days so few of the guys are left, and those that are, lots of them can't make the trip." My heart was in my throat and I didn't know what to say.

I helped Shifty get onto the plane and then realized he was back in Coach, while I was in First Class. I sent the flight attendant back to get him and said that I wanted to switch seats. When Shifty came forward, I got up out of the seat and told him I wanted him to have it, that I'd take his in coach.

He said "No, son, you enjoy that seat. Just knowing that there are still some who remember what we did and still care is enough to make an old man very happy." His eyes were filling up as he said it. And mine are brimming up now as I write this.

Shifty died on June 17 after fighting cancer.

There was no parade.

No big event in Staples Center .

No wall to wall back to back 24x7 news coverage.

No weeping fans on television.

And that's not right.

Let's give Shifty his own Memorial Service, online, in our own quiet way. Please forward this email to everyone you know. Especially to the veterans.

Rest in peace, Shifty.

"A nation without heroes is nothing."

Classmates,

The position referenced below is for the Washington Metropolitan Chapter of Community Association's Institute. It's a position any grad could handle in their sleep. The idea I had was for, perhaps, recent grad whose service commitment got waived due to a medical discharge (I assume the still do that), but candidates (obviously) are not limited to that population. If you know of anyone (alum kids are welcome, too), I'd be happy to forward to Sarah. I'm on 2 WMCCAI committees and have 1st hand experience/familiarity with the incumbent's taskings.

Rick Keller ('81 - 8th) was able to attend the visitation last sunday for Joe
Schartung. He reported the following... "I was able to go to the visitation.
Decatur is about an hour from my house. Very large crowd, Joe's roomate was
there though I wasn't able to see him nor was I able to visit with Connie -
Don't really know her but just too many folks. Joe obviously had established a
large network of friends. Did sign the book "USNA 81" and spoke with a lady who
was obviously close to the family and expressed class condolosences etc."

Joel Anderson ('81 - 5th) attended the funeral on Monday. He gave me permission
to post the following.

"I knew Joe from the academy, though not as well as I knew some others since he
was on the "other side of the world" in 36th company, far removed from 5th
company. That said, I did not even know that he lived in the same small Alabama
town as I do. I guess I need to get out more but chasing my kids kind of keeps
me off the streets.

The funeral was standing room only and a nice blend of Catholic and military
traditions. It is clear to me that Joe made a real mark on the community in many
different ways from activities in his church to coaching kids in various sports
to his job. He was a fine man, military officer and member of the community in
this small Alabama town. He proudly served his God, his country, his community
and his family and friends. I suspect none could ask for a better epitaph.

I hope that all will keep his wife, Connie, their children and Joe's parents and
other family members in their thoughts and prayers.

I received the following information from the family yesterday afternoon.

"The memorial service will be held in Van Alstyne, Texas at 3pm on Friday, April
10th at the First Methodist Church.

His parents will be holding a memorial service on Wednesday, April 15th at the
First United Methodist Church in Pittsburg, Texas where we live.

We, Pat and I, really appreciate the notes of condolences from all of his
classmates. We were extremely proud of the fact that he went to the USNA while
we lived in Potomac MD.

Thanks a lot.

His Loving Parents"

If any classmates are able to attend, It would be appreciated.

Dear Anne,
We want to send our prayers and condolences to you and your family.  Joe was a wonderful man.
We spent many evenings talking with him about music and all of his interests.  He spoke of us family
so often and we felt as thought we knew you.

We were very good friends for many years. My Mother was from Decatur and we always had so many things to talk about.  Joe will be sadly missed by us and remembered as a very gentle, kind man, and a dear friend.  We are so very sorry, Anne. We are very shocked and saddened by this news.
God Bless each of you during this time.
Most sincerely,
Captain Kevin and Kathy McCarthy

From Anne Schartung:

Thursday, April 2nd

Thank you for the kind words, messages of condolences, and prayers offered for the Schartung family. Today was a planning day, a difficult day. I wanted to share some information on arrangements for Joe's funeral.

Visitation will begin at 4 pm on Sunday, April 5. Rosary will be led by Fr. Joel Martin at 4:30 pm and visitation with the family will continue until 7 pm.

The funeral Mass will be held on Monday, April 6 at 11 am led by Fr. Ray Remke. The Mass will be followed by military honors at the church. Then all guests are invited by the Schartung family to stay for a luncheon.

The visitation, funeral Mass, and luncheon will all take place at Annunciation of the Lord Catholic Church located at 3910 Spring Avenue in Decatur.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the Schartung Educational Fund (to assist with the children's education expenses) or the Annunciation of the Lord Building Fund. Donations to either fund may be mailed to:

Annunciation of the Lord Catholic Church
3910 Spring Avenue
Decatur, AL 35603

Whether you are here or here in spirit, your prayers and thoughts continue to comfort Connie, the children, and Joe's parents and siblings. If you have any stories about Joe that we would enjoy, please share them on this page or e-mail them to me at AWonthego@bellsouth.net and I will share them with the family. Also, if you have any pictures of Joe you'd like to share, please e-mail or bring them to one of the services. We really want to celebrate Joe's life on earth and create memories of how Joe touched our lives for the children.

Many thanks,
Anne

For the people coming to lunch at Fort Myer tomorrow at the O-Club, I sent a
list of names for the gate guards. Hopefully this will ease your access to the
base if you don't have a military ID. Tell them you are with the U.S. Naval
Academy Class of 1981.

Jim Ahlgrimm,

I was wondering if there is still room to attend the luncheon next week on the 5th?  I had a schedule conflict that moved, so I can attend if it’s not too late.  I have a sticker from Dahlgren and  CAC card, so I shouldn’t have a problem getting on base.  I’m not familiar with Fort Meyer, so if there are directions I could use them.

Thanks for your consideration of my late notice,

We've had a tremendous response for the Thursday, March 5 lunch, our
biggest crowd ever, nearing 40 people! I have booked the Fort Myer O-
Club Campaign Room. The cost of the lunch will be $17.50 per
person. We'll have the room from around 11:30 to 1:30, with lunch
starting around noon. Our guest speaker will be Congressman Eric
Massa, who promises a non-partisan presentation, and I'm sure a good
dose of humor for all. Let's hope Eric's schedule holds out.

Here's who is planning to come. Let me know if any changes in plans.

Jim,

I've been talking w/Otto & Mutz about getting 81ers together the
night before the O'Flaherty/Miller COC next Wed. We're thinking @
Chick's Oyster Bar on Lynnhaven Inlet in Virginia Beach (near Little
Creek). Mutz says he knows the owner. Can you send word out through
the Yahoo group to gauge interest so we can see if we need a
reservation or a space blocked off? We're thinking sometime after
work for locals, say, between 6 and 7 or so and we can hang out, have
a drink, get munchies or sit down for a meal as folks desire. It's on
the inlet w/nice views.
