A multi-talented, very prolific writer with over 50 books of fiction, poetry, plays, and nonfiction to his name, Updike was one of the most erudite, discussed, celebrated, award-winning (including two Pulitzer Prizes, National Book Award, National Book Critics Circle Award, Rosenthal Award, and the Howells Medal), and therefore important modern American authors.
