Hi Ladies,
There are still some spots left for Women's Indoor Nationals in Glasgow on the
30th and 31st of January 2010.
Its looking like it will be a great tournament, and all the games will be held
on 3G astroturf at the very impressive newly built Toryglen Regional Football
Center alongside Open Indoor Nationals.
The cost of the tournament is £125 per team.
So if there are any ladies out there who have a team that might want to have a
shot at becoming national champions, then please get in touch. For now all you
need to do to enter is express an interest by replying to this e mail.
Hope to hear from a few more teams,
Thanks,

Hey guys, just a quick reminder that the last training of this year is this
weekend, the 5th and 6th December.
Even if you can only make one day, we'd appreciate everyone turning up. Now
would be a great time to get into the swing of things before january/february
trials come around.
The plan for trainign is that on Saturday we will eb focusing on our Offence,
making the right cuts, putting discs in the right areas, breaking forces,
passing and moving, and working on our long game.
The plan for sunday is to run over our Defence and Fitness. Strong forces and
hard running will be the aim fo the day, but we'll be running over Zone to make
sure we're all up to scratch, how we keeo it strong, and how we overcome it.
And overall, they'll be plenty of game time to evaluate everyone's overall
performance.
There WILL be a social on the Saturday night. Initial plans are to hit up a few
pubs around the area to keep the old buggers happy, and then for those feeling
up to it, we'll move up to Fallowfield and hit somewhere late.
IMPORTANT; If you need accomodation this weekend you need to let me know ASAP,
(my mobile is 07875954438).
Cheers guys, and see you Saturday!
Oli Wilcox.
Member updates have been missing for some time - sorry. I'm trying to get

Hi All,
I have recieved bid for UMON on the 8th/9th May.
If anyone is interested in putting a bid in they need to contact me before
the deadline of January 11th.
Cheers
Shimmy.
PS. We also need bids for mixed indoor regionals for every region but
Scotland. So if you know of a venue get in contact with them and your
regional coordinator. Preferable weekend is 23/24th January but it is
possible to run a tournement in a single day as well.

Hi Everyone,
Sorry it took so long to get this out, but I assumed people would ask me if they
lost anything. Here is a small list of property that was left at Toryglen. (The
venue may also have some that staff picked up, so if your property is not on the
list then you can phone them directly and check if they have it)

If you, or anyone you know, own anything on this list then you, or someone you
know, can pick it up at the Iron Man tournament this Saturday. If that is not
possible then e mail me and I will try and find a way to get it back to you.
If any of the above is not claimed by the end of this weekend in person or by e
mail it will go to a local charity shop as it will been lost for a month and is
probably not missed too much.

Hi there,
Apologies if BD does something weird with the formatting in the message. If it
does, read this post at
http://ultimatefrisbeeandi.blogspot.com/2009/11/hosting-tournament-venue.html
With so many tournaments having taken
place across the UK in so many different venues, it would be great to
have all of these available to view in one online resource. So if in
the past few years you have been a Tournament Director or have helped
run a tournament, you would be helping the UK Ultimate community if you
took 2 minutes to pass on some very useful information regarding the
venue. I may make this a series of posts (not on BD, on my blog) covering other
aspects of
running a tournament that will help future TDs in their planning.
So
either respond in the comments section on the blog or email me directly at
greenie141(at)hotmail.com. Other comments regarding +ve and -ve things
about venues you've experienced will also be very useful!
Let everyone know:
What was the name and location of the venue?
What was the name of your tournament?
Was it indoors,outdoors or beach?
How many players did the venue host?
How many teams?
How many pitches did you use?
How many days did your tournament last?
Was there food on-site?
Was there on-site camping?
How much did the venue cost per day?
How would you rate the venue facilities out of 10?
How would you rate the playing surface out of 10?
Would you use it again?
How would you rate the venue overall out of 10?
Want to add anything else?
Great!
If everyone comes together and actually contributes a bit of
information and time then I'll put together a list of sorts and send it
out. I can't help but think that a list of 100 or so venues across the
UK will be a great place to start for wannabe TDs.
For everyone
to do their own research seperately, when for years the same questions
have been asked of the same venues doesn't make any real sense when we
all have the same goal of good quality Ultimate Tournaments. Some
venues are Ultimate friendly while others aren't, so let the rest of
the community know!
A very useful resource to get you started on planning your tournament can
already be found on the UKUA website with the UKUA guide for TDs as well as
others specific to running tour events.
Thanks for your time,
D

Hi everyone,
Due to a drop out there is now one space available for the One Day Iron Man
tournament on the 5th December (Next Saturday)
Its a 20 team tournament with each team getting 6 games on the lush indoor 3G
surface at toryglen regional football centre.
So if you are not doing anything next Saturday and you know 4 or 5 people who
can make it to Glasgow for the day then get in touch to be part of what promises
to be a very fun and exciting day.
There is also a team looking for 2 pick ups, so if you don't have a team and
want to come along then get in touch and I should be able to place you.

Hi All
There's a decent chance, especially if you live in the South, that you've
participated in one of my research project in the last few years, either for my
MSc dissertation (Leadership in Sport), or for my PhD (assessing ability in
sport). In each of these projects, I used Ultimate Frisbee players as my
participant sample.
So firstly, if you were a participant in one of my studies, then can I say a big
thank you for taking the time to do this. It certainly made the data collection
easier with so many people showing a positive attitude and a general willingness
to help out by participating.
Second, in the last 12 months, two of the studies have been published in sport
psychology journals. If you were interested in the general findings of the
studies, I have included the abstracts (below) with the key information and
findings. (Please feel free to send me an e-mail if you had any further
questions about the research).
Best Wishes

Measurement of Transformational Leadership and its Relationship with Team
Cohesion and Performance Level. Callow, Nichola; Smith, Matthew J.; Hardy, Lew;
Arthur, Calum A.; Hardy, James, Journal of Applied Sport Psychology .
Oct-Dec2009, Vol. 21 Issue 4.
The present study explored the construct validity of a Differentiated
Transformational Leadership Inventory and its relationship with team cohesion
and performance level. Three hundred and nine club standard ultimate Frisbee
players in the United Kingdom (mean age = 24.30 years, SD = 3.90) completed an
adapted version of Hardy, Arthur, Jones, Shariff, Munnoch, Isaacs, and Allsopp
et al.'s (in press) Differentiated Transformational Leadership Inventory and the
Group Environment Questionnaire (Carron, Widmeyer, & Brawley, 1985).
Confirmatory factor analysis revealed evidence for the factorial and
discriminant validity of the leadership inventory. Furthermore, results
demonstrated that the leadership behaviors of fostering acceptance of group
goals and promoting team work, high performance expectations, and individual
consideration significantly predicted task cohesion; and fostering acceptance of
group goals and promoting teamwork significantly predicted social cohesion.
Performance level moderated these relationships. These results are discussed
with reference to the conceptualization and measurement of transformational
leadership, and how coaches' leadership behaviors may influence cohesion
depending on the level of athletes' performance.
Influence of order effects and mode of judgement on assessments of ability in
sport. Smith, Matthew J.; Greenlees, Iain; Manley, Andrew, Journal of Sports
Sciences . May2009, Vol. 27 Issue 7.
We examined the influence of order effects on assessments of sporting ability.
Club-standard ultimate frisbee players (n = 240) viewed footage of a target
player performing a series of ultimate frisbee skills. Participants viewed
either a declining (successful to unsuccessful) pattern of performance or an
ascending (unsuccessful to successful) pattern. Ratings were made on three
descriptors of ultimate frisbee ability. One group of participants made ratings
at the end of the sequence of clips, one group updated their ratings after each
clip in a step-by-step manner, and one group used an extended step-by-step
processing strategy. Finally, a fourth group made end-of-sequence ratings, but a
delay condition was used to control for the time taken to make step-by-step
ratings. Analyses of covariance (order vs. judgement condition) were conducted
on the ratings. Results revealed primacy effects for the ratings of the target
player in the end-of-sequence and delay conditions, and in the first
step-by-step condition, but no order effects in the second step-by-step
condition. Findings indicate order effects can be reduced by using a more
thorough step-by-step processing strategy.

Hello,
This Sunday will see the second stage of the London Beginner Sessions that
we started last month. We're trying to give people who are new to the sport
a chance to understand what it is all about and to pick up some basic
skills. Our last day had about 15 total beginners come out and a few people
who were looking to get back into the sport and it went really well. It's
not open only to "beginners", you might have been playing a while but fancy
getting out and having a session with some different people. Whatever the
reason, please come down and get involved. It'll be alongside the Flaming
Galah training session so they'll be a big game at the end with everyone
getting a chance to get involved. One total beginner got the most outrageous
layout D last time so I'm hoping to see more "experienced" players utterly
humiliated in front of a rabid, baying mob. That's the dream.
If this session appeals to you or you know people it might do, then please
forward it on. Ovathrow sent some of their corporate colleagues down to the
last one and I saw them playing winter league the other week, so it could be
just the nudge people need to give it a go. It doesn't matter if they have
never thrown a frisbee before or claim to not be able to catch, tell them to
come down and give it a go. The split last time was 50-50 men and women as
well so they need not be put off if they think it will be all guys.
I'm aware that this could have been better announced/organised but I'm
sinking a little bit under the weight of frisbee admin. In the new year,
I'll try and get these sessions better advertised outside of frisbee circles
and make a push at developing a beginner team that possibly enters summer
league after a few months of training. If you have any bright ideas about
how we can do this, or maybe you fancy helping out, then please drop me a
line. It's all work in progress at the moment so your suggestions and advice
are appreciated.
Thanks.
Dan.

Evening ladies and gents,
It's that time again when you start looking around for something slightly
different to kick off the New Year. Maybe you are fed up with indoors or your
team mates are just too weak to play outside in the mud.
Back for its 5th year Frostbite offers a great alternative for those who aren't
scared of the low temperatures and some slightly frozen sand.
Frostbite 2010 will run on the 16th of January on Sandbanks beach in Poole,
Dorset. As in previous years it will be a one day, 16 team, beach tournament
with hot food and drinks provided. As its the 5th year we might also do some
sort of souvenir memorabilia for each team.
If you want to enter a team you need to do 2 things:
1) Email frostbite_tour@... to say you want a team in and what sort of
standard you are/who makes up your team.
2) Send a cheque for £75 payable to Chris Whittle to.....9 Selbourne Terrace,
Fratton, Portsmouth, Hampshire, PO1 5AL.
Please don't try to enter via this email address as everything needs to go
through the event one.
Cheers
See you on the beach

All who are interested,
Just to remind people that the experienced men’s session, for people who
have played over a year, is running this Saturday in Liverpool. (21st of
November)
The session will be focusing on specific aspects of Ultimate and giving a
deeper, more advanced insight to them. Aspects such as; putting an affective
mark on experienced throwers and affective body positioning while defending
against a huck. All the drills and tutorials will assume at least
a basic level of understanding.
This session will hopefully give those who are interested in playing in the
A tour, with Vision, a taster of the approach we take to develop our players
to that standard. We are lucky enough to have players at Vision that have
played for GB, others who have advanced experience in other sports, players
from Chevron Action Flash and some very successful coaches. These are the
types of players who will be leading the session this Saturday and imparting
their knowledge to those who choose to participate.
The session starts at 11am (boots on and faff finished before then) and ends
at 3pm.
You will need to bring a light and dark top, water, waterproofs, boots, etc.
If you are coming to this event, let me know via email or phone (at the end
of the email). Groups are encouraged to come along, we already have groups
who have asked, but there is parking available pitch-side, changing
facilities and showers at the Greenbank Centre.
Greenbank Sports Academy: L17 1AG (greenbank lane)
Pitch: The pitch is at the cornor of greenbank lane and mossly hill drive,
in Sefton Park.

Sheffield Ultimate is hosting a mixed training session on Saturday 28 November,

with a few drills but predominantly comprising plenty of games.
Although aimed at integrating the new students with some of Sheffield's more
'experienced' players, this session is OPEN TO ALL, regardless of your
intentions for next season. The session will be followed by lunch at a near-by

Hi everyone,
With the dust settled on what were very successful first tournaments in Toryglen
Regional Football Centre (Scottish University Women's Regionals and UKU Open
Indoor Qualifiers), I would like to take the opportunity to invite everyone back
again for Glasgow's Iron 5's competition on the 5th of December.
There are still a few spots left, but I have a feeling they might fill up
quickly, so if anyone out there has been holding off entering I would suggest
that you do it soon to avoid missing out.
As I said before this should be an excellent day of ultimate, with large 3G
pitches and teams coming from near and far to play Iron Man though choice!
Each team will get 6 (20 minute +) games and the pitches can be quite draining!
The entry fee is a mere £25 per team, with a further £5 per player (player fee
can be paid on the day if your team prefers)
So if you can get 4 mates together and are interested in entering then give me
an e mail and I can get payment details out to you, once I receive your £25 team
fee then I will confirm your spot.
Thanks
Derryk Glasgow TD

Hi all,
Southampton Skunks hosted Southern Uni Women's Indoor Regionals this weekend in
Eastleigh, with 16 teams battling it out for the 9 qualifying places at
Nationals. Here are the results, with each team's average spirit score out of 20
in brackets. We used the BULA Spirit score system to allow teams to offer a more
complete breakdown of spirit and feel it was very successful.
Qualifying for UWIN:
1. Exeter Urielle (13.1) - WINNERS
2. Chichester Cobras (13) - RUNNER UP
3. Southampton Skunks (13.4) - SPIRIT WINNERS
4. UWE/Portsmouth Sublisco (11.8)
5. Cardiff Angels (11.1)
6. Bristol Shimmy (12.5)
7. Sussex Squaws 12.1)
8. Plymouth Picnickers (10.2)
9. Surrey Sirens (10) - PLATE
10. Imperial discDoctors (11.8)
11. Kent Touch This (12.6)
12. Cardiff Angels 2 (12.5)
13. Exeter Urielle 2 (11.4)
14. Chichester Cobras 2 (11.6)
15. Southampton Skunks 2 [ineligible] (11.4)
16. Sussex Squaws 2 [ineligible] (12.1)
It gives me great pleasure to announce that the three highest-scoring teams for
Spirit were the three highest finishing teams - Urielle and Cobras were second
and third respectively. I feel it is important to emphasise that Spirit of the
Game and intensity of play should not compromise one another and the results of
this past weekend prove this.
Thanks to all who took part and congratulations to the top 9 teams going through
to Nationals.
