Description

Unitarianism is the teaching that God is One and cannot be equated with any human being or religious institution. People must use their own spiritual and mental faculties to seek truth, rather than idolizing a man, a book, or anything else.

The Unitarian Bahai faith is a movement of Bahaism that teaches that none of the successors of the prophet Baha'u'llah are infallible and none of them have absolute authority over individual Bahais. Although various people may have spiritually inspired ideas, there is no human being, institution or organization that can claim to speak for God, because Baha'u'llah explicitly prohibited anyone from claiming a station of "command" for at least 1000 years after his own prophethood.

Individual Bahais are commanded by Baha'u'llah to "associate with the followers of all religions in a spirit of friendliness and fellowship. Whatsoever has led the children of mankind to shun one another, and has caused dissensions and divisions among them, has, through the revelation of these words, been nullified and abolished." This is the guiding principle of Unitarian Bahaism -- unlike Bahai traditions that prohibit their members from belonging to churches and mosques and which excommunicate and shun Bahais who disagree with Bahai leaders who claim to be infallible (i.e. a "Guardian" or "Universal House of Justice").

Unitarian Bahais mostly meet in Unitarian Universalist churches. We also sometimes participate in Christian, Muslim, Jewish, and other spiritual congregations. UBs must keep their Unitarian beliefs secret in conservative Baha'i Faith communities.

No matter who you are or what religious background and affiliation you have, if you're interested in learning about and discussing the message of Baha'u'llah from a Unitarian perspective, you are welcome in this group.

Members are expected to be courteous and tolerant of differing opinions. Personal attacks (including accusations of heresy or "Covenant-breaking") are prohibited.
