Hello
for some while i have been a spud gun fan and have built only
combustion spud guns, I have been realy diapointed by there weak
preformance. how ever i have come up with an idea to increase the
chamber pressure. if the barrel was recessed till it touches the
clean out plug and the ignition point is moved to the front of the
chamber (closer to the muzzel) it should create more pressure. i
belive that a similar idea is used to shorten a standard rifel and is
called a bull pup design. it is to bad i have to wait to fire till
the pvc cement dries. but tomarow should prove to be interesting.
after all of my vast research i've yet to see such a design in a
combustion spud gun but it is very close to a piston or diaphram
design well got to run but i will hopefull send results tomarrow if
anyone has tried this design before i would like to know.
the new design is a smashing success, there are a few un expected
results how ever. very noticable loss of volume. increased range and
almost no muzzel flash. this modification was done to my first spud
gun and is highly recomended. all that was done is to recess the
barrel into the combustion chamber. you need to get a file to remove
the stop on the 3-1 1/2 adapter and just slide the barrel(1 1/2
pvc)till it is about 1 in above where the cleanout plug comes to when
closed. mark it pull it out apply primer to both peices. re insert
barrel 2 in above mark coat area below mark with pvc cement push
barrel to mark and give 1/4 turn. allow to dry.
Wow. i founded this group several years ago, then forgot about it when
i moved to europe and did'nt have access to the web on regular basis,
i also lost all my guns in the move, as the military would not ship
them overseas, Recently i started college in Illinois and am looking
forward to get back to the spudguns and catch up with the group.
Again i apoligize for my extended absense.
for my gun -
i'm thinking another PVC gun not sure one the size, definately propane
for the fuel, and a stun gun for the ignitor, this should solve the
problem of flints getting wet , or with a bbq ignitor just not being
strong enough. hope to post pics of it soon.

Hi all, being a genuis(NOT!) welder, i got the brilliant idea that
i'd make a cannon using two inch pipe 48" long, with a combustion
chamber made out of 4" pipe 18" long. so far so good. i then
threaded a spark plug into it, and ran a wire from a chainsaw
ignition. now the fun part. acetylene is the most volatile gas in
exhistence, you can't have acetylene at more than 15 pounds per
square inch pressure or it goes BOOMMM!!!, all by itself. thats why
they put acetone in acetylene tanks, it absorbs the acetylene so it
can be stored at higher pressures. the other part of the formula is
pure oxygen, the welding or the medical kind. oxygen doesn't burn
all by itself, but when mixed with anything else that does burn,
well, it just makes the burning stuff burn wayyyy faster. so, 25%
acetylene, 75% oxygen in a steel potato gun = 1 HUGE boom
and.....juice. way too much jam to be of any use for potato
launching, but wrap a ball bearing in enough cloth to get a snug fit
in the barrel, i wonder where the damn thing came down. I don't
recommend you try this tho, unless you know how to do an x-ray
quality weld and how much pressure the metal can take, cuz you could
have shrapnel all over hell if you build it wrong, ouch.
you can mix oxygen and propane to just about any ratio you want,
you'll have to experiment to find something you're satisfied with,
but fer shitsake, be careful.pure oxygen accelerates the burn big
time, plastic guns might blow apart. don't even think about using
acetylene in a plastic gun(see my other posting, <potato pulverizer>)
hey guys i dont know if you care but i plan to make a mortar cannon
if you have any blueprint ideas or ammo ideas feel free to e-mail me
at any time.

I own 1 air cannon for now the tank is to big for the barrel. All my
parts are rated for at least 1000 PSI that is right 1000psi. I put it
together from parts I had around. My dad is a pipe fitter so he has
a lot of pipe lying around. My barrel and valve are stainless. My
tank is rated to 3600psi. It's aluminum wrapped with fiberglass. It
started its life as a CNG (compressed natural gas) tank. I'll post
the size later. My barrel is 1" OD by about 3' the thing is a beast.
At 130 PSI it will shoot 1/5 of a mile. About 150 yards. Using a
broomstick with a 5/8 hole 5" long in the front with lead cast in the
hole for Weight in the nose. A tail I use a cloth disk about 5-6"
across nailed on with a roofing button. Or a peace of plastic caution
tape or similar type product about 6-10inches long. That is what I
use for ammo. I'm 16 and live in the U.S. of A. in the N.E. part
Indiana. I love science' blowing things up, guns, and cannons. I own
over 5 black powder cannons ranging from ½ inch ID to 3 5/8 of an
inch ID.
thank God for natural selection and Darwin Award Hopefuls.

theres lots of high pressure cannons around, but you'll need a special air
compresser, a standard shop compresser only goes to 150 lbs or so. you'd need to
get ahold of a scuba diving air compressor, but they're BIG BUCKS. Acetylene
will give u well over 1000lbs pressure( i dont know the exact figures) but it's
highly dangerous, and you have to make damn sure you're gun wont blow apart. i
use acetylene in mine, but i used hydraulic pipe that's rated for those kind of
pressures, and i'm a certified welder, we x-rayed the welds to check for faults
for safety reasons. i'll look around the net to see if i can find out what the
pressures created by exploding acetylene are.

Good day all.
My name is c_reek.
I have a spud gun.
All the rest i've built i gave away.
Can't have a friend over to see the spud gun without a trip to the
hardware store.
I've also built a trebuchet for the kids to use.
I'd be working on the projects now, but i've spent nearly a year now
in Kuwait and Iraq. Doh!
Only technical thing i've done with my spud gun is to calculate the
muzzle velocity.

i am. i have over 5 black powder cannon. one ove them
way 80lbs and has a 3and 5/8 inch inner dimeter (ID).
2 can lunch gulf balls out of sight. the other 3 are
1/2 ID. 2 of them are made out of a stainless bolt.

Listen here you little twit. I don't really give a green rat's moldy
cheese what you like or don't, or what pisses you off or pisses on
you. You're an idiot. You prove it with what you say and how you
write it. If anyone else has a problem with Idiots giving little
else other than faulty information and trumped up crap that is only
going to get someone hurt or killed, then good. Personally, I don't
care. I still say you're up for a Darwin Award, and the sooner the
better.
In case anyone wonders, below is a copy of the email he didn't have
the decended testicles to send to the group, instead to my personal
email. Grow up kid.

Hello, I am a newbie here. I am not a newbie at cannons and mortars
and
other type explosive devices.
Black powder is hard to come by and Pyrodex is expensive. I am
just
wondering if anyone has done any experimenting with smokeless powder
for cannons or mortars.
Now, I know this is a delicate subject but my mortars are very
strongly built
and I fully believe will operate okay on smokeless powder. I know how
to
set them up for test and how to work up a load etc. but just
wondering if
anyone on this group has already done any experimenting along these
lines and may save me lots of time.

Acetylene:
Acetylene is lighter than air with a density being approximately
1.25 grams per liter. The ideal acetylene mix is 65 ml per liter of
air. Acetylene belongs to the group of hydrocarbons known as alkenes.
The chemical formula for acetylene is C2H4. Its chemical structure is
H H
\ /
C=C
/ \
H H
The chemical equation for the combustion of acetylene is the
following:
C2H4 + 3O2 -> 2H2O +2CO2
This fuel is extremely dangerous and should not be used because it
has a reputation to spontaneously combust with the oxygen in the air.
This fuel however would be the best fuel for the explosive properties
it possesses if it could be handle safely. With that said don't
use
acetylene.
Acetylene is not lighter than air it is heaver than air i have used O2
and Acetylene in a trash bag during the 4th of july the trash bag
dident float up into the air. and i take a lot of safty into my
planing of each one. dont try it. Acetylene only auto inginets when
over 15psi. the danger is that it takes only a static spark to set it
off. that is not much. and the persher genrated by the gas buring is a
lot.
