Here's the news about the Essay Contest:
25 High School Students Compete for Essay Prize
January, 2009 (UNA-OKC)-- Twenty-five students from across the state of Oklahoma have submitted entries in this year's UNA-USA High School Essay Contest. Jalal Daneshfar, contest coordinator for our Greater OKC chapter, announced that a $500 prize will be awarded for the best essay. The winner will be announced at the UNA-OKC Annual Spring Meeting and Luncheon on Saturday, April 18th, at Oklahoma City University.
Mr. Daneshfar said a two-stage design is being used for the competition. In the first stage, the 25 entries from Oklahoma will be reviewed and evaluated by a 3-judge panel made up of volunteers from the Greater OKC Chapter. Then, in the second stage of the contest, the top-rated Oklahoma essay will be recommended to compete for one of three prizes that are being offered by the national office of UNA-USA. The first-place winner of the national competition will receive a $1,500 cash award. They will also be invited to attend UNA-USA's Member's Day, held at the United Nations Headquarters in June, 2009, as an honored guest.
The purpose of the contest is to encourage students to become engaged in global issues and the work of the UN through scholarship and critical thinking. The theme of this year's contest focuses on Millennium Development Goal Seven, and asks students to tackle the challenge of ensuring environmental sustainability.
This is the first year that the essay competition was conducted entirely over the internet. In Oklahoma, online entries were received from high school students living in Altus, Jennings, Kingfisher, McAlester, Norman, Okemah, Owasso, Sand Springs, Tulsa, Warr Acres, and Yukon.
