I had a call from the BBC last night. They asked if I knew anyone who
was talented but nervous about going on stage. They are running this
program on Wednesday whereby Paul McKenna gives them hypnotherapy
with the aim of giving them the confidence to go on stage.
Any takers?

The jellybeans arrived in the post. Joosters actually, and very nice
too. No grovelling apology though . . .

Yeah, we got some a few days ago, not part of an apology but rather a
separate marketing mailout. Shame it went to completely the wrong address
initially though...

And if you don't, the Beeb'll probably employ some out-of-work actor to pretend
that they've got terrible stage fright, spend 4 episodes conquering it and go on
to Hollywood stardom

Only 4 days to go until the BOB convention in Bristol!

Workshops:

We've got some really nice workshops lined up this
year, with the emphasis on unusual and/or creative.

	 So far:

	 Life-size balloon sculpture (all day)
Radio controlled car grand-prix (all day)

b3ta cut and paste workshop by Little Paul
	 Pub tricks (in the bar)

	 Hat manipulation
	 Passing clubs Bristol style
	 Advanced poi (yes, really)
	 3 ball tricks
	 Beginners poi

	 Beginners everything (11am - 1pm)

Plus a few more yet to be finalised.

Raffle: We're bored with raffles, which hold up the show, and
are biased against people who can't stay that long.

So instead we've got something different, with chances to
win presents from underneath the Christmas tree, going on
	 throughout the day!

Show: The show is almost fully booked now. We're not going
to reveal the line-up until the day, but trust me, there's
lots that you shouldn't have seen before. It should be
	 a good one.

Please note that this is an evening cabaret-style show,
and may contain some strong language. It might not be
suitable for parents who are easily offended. (It should
	 be fine for children though).

Getting there:

*PLEASE* check the website for directions if you don't
know how to get there. We won't be putting up road signs
	 this year.

(We always stay up till 3am putting up signs, and by 8am
most of them have been nicked, so we've decided there's
	 no point).

	 Bristol University Students Union,
         Queens Rd, Clifton, Bristol
         http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?P2M?P=BS81LN&Z=1

	 Detailed directions at http://www.bristolcircus.co.uk/
	 (click on BOB convention)

Time: 10am till 11pm.

Cost: Still only £5!

Drink: Very cheap bar on site

Food: Crap student food on site, but we'll give you a map showing
you where all the nearby restaurants and take-aways are.

Crash space: You're welcome to stay the night and come to Sunday
lunch and juggling on the Sunday afternoon. Email
                 to reserve a space.

Remember: "We love you, that's why we're here"

Hi everyone, this is my first mail out to UK Jugglers,

Im going to London on Thursday for a physics lecture and I'm going to try
and squeeze in a bit of Juggling shopping while im there as theres no shop
around where i live (Bedfordshire), well, none that i can find anyway! Do
any of you know of juggling shops in London that i could get to on the tube?
I've done some searching on the web but all i can find are site that dont
seem very sure if the shops are still there/open/moved etc. I'm looking at
buying my first torches, any recomendations as to where to go would be
great, and directions if you all arnt as hopeless at navigating london as me
:)

And, while im here, to all the experianced fire jugglers, whats the best
fuel to use on your torches? I've never thought to ask anyone... From what i
can gather this is the subject of hot (no pun intended) debate, I'm thinking
maybe parafin type lamp oill kinda thing?

Thanks loads

Max

Hi Max, and welcome,

First off : http://www.jugglingdb.com is the Internet Juggling Database
(IJDb), and should be your jumping off point for any juggling related query on
the net. It is a worldwide resource, so you can regard it as your portal to the
whole world of juggling, even if it only ends up linking you to somewhere else.

         Secondly : http://www.jugglingdb.com/vendors/?country=222 is the IJDb's
page for UK vendors. IT IS NOT A COMPREHENSIVE LIST, but then the IJDb isn't
comprehensive either, but it *is* the best place to start, nonetheless. You can
see the whole lot by going to the IJDb and clicking on 'vendors' on the sidebar.

Thidly : http://www.jugglingdb.com/vendors/?record=25 is the page for
Oddballs, the only vendor listed in London. Their page is showing that their
records are up to date, but you can check anyway, 'cos our beloved webmaster has
thoughtfully provided you with a tlephone number to ring!

I haven't been to Oddball's current location at Camden Lock, but
millions have. Nearest tubes are Camden and Kilburn, or get the North London
line overground to Camden Road. Once there, locate your nearest map shop ;-)

Fuel - use plain old paraffin because it's cheap, and easily obtainable
in pre-packed form. Use barbecue lighter fluid for a cleaner, hotter flame. This
advice applies to the UK only, since them yankees have their own ways of naming
such things.

Oddballs have a shop in Camden:
http://www.oddballs.co.uk/sales.htm

Buy Henry's Niteflite torches. They're generally reckoned to be the best you
can get.

Use standard paraffin, available from hardware shops and garages.

If you haven't done fire juggling before *seriously* consider getting
someone with experience to teach you - maybe come and visit us at
www.camcircus.org

Seconded!

(Definately *don't* buy Beard Street Pro torches - They are the only
juggling purchase I've truly regretted)

> Use standard paraffin, available from hardware shops and garages.

*nod* If you're having trouble finding some (I was in bristol at
one point) look in the greenhouse section of your local garden centre
or B&Q - it's often used as a fuel for greenhouse heaters :-)

Oh, and if you still can't get any of that, Lamp oil is a good
second choice.

or BBQ lighter fluid if you're *really* stuck.

Again, very sound advice. Although if you can't find anyone experienced
do at least be sensible and make sure you're not alone! It's only
because my sister was there to put me out that I escaped some
potentially horrific burns the time I set the back of my jumper on
fire :-)

It is not just the obvious risks of fire, accidents & burning etc; there are
also serious long term health risks associated with working with these
fuels. Get advice & tuition from an experienced professional.

Do *not* breathe, inhale, ingest, inject or in-anything the fuels, or their
fumes, whether lit (far worse than any smoking) or unlit (a nasty solvent).

Do take care,
NickP.

Yep. Always have someone nearby with water, in case you catch fire.
Important safety tip: *Never* fall for that "Don't worry, I'll throw my beer
over you" line.
If the worst comes to the worst, vital seconds may be lost as they think
"Hmm, how much do I *really* like him?" ;o)

Fire Blanket better, as that covers situations where a fuel spill
catches.

Excellent, thanks Jay, Charlie, J, Peter, Nick and Brian... *evil grin*
looks likes Camden is my best bet but i'll scout round if i get time and
report back on the ones i can find.

I've had some tuition (further than 'don't catch the hot end') and generally
know what im doing although more advice/performance tips/websites would be
appreciated :) Am after my own set of torches now so i can practice
properly.
And yep, im told fireblankets are a good idea for burning fuel (or infact
people).

And for the record I didn't write that email at 3.48am - my PC's clock is
wrong!! At least I think thats what the problem was...

I'll go along with that.

<Serious Face>
	 You can't be *too* careful.
Try not to use glass containers for fuel.
Always put the lid back on.
Make sure everybody stays well back - small children in particular
have no fear.

be safe and have fun,

At risk of adding a me too - I'll second Charlie on that one. Henry's
Torches are significantly better than any other torches I've used, and
worth the fact that they're three times the price of cheap torches.

Another tip - when you realise that you can catch them by the wick,
and throw them again, beware of grabbing hold of the metal bar to do
this, because it gets a damn site hotter than the flamey bit.

Before someone corrects me, and tells me that actually it just
conducts heat more efficiently, and isn't actually hotter, I don't
care, it still bloody hurts, and you still have to put up with a stack
of wanking jokes for the week afterwards regarding the blisters on
your palms.

first time i did fire i didn't realise that you had to shake the excess off!
started with 2 clubs doing some swinging, thought, wow this is soo good,
especially the noise and the heat generated. Looked down and my trousers
were on fire :)

second true story is that i thought it was funny to set my hair on fire at
the end of juggling - always taking the precaution of not having put any gel
/mousse etc on my hair beforehand.

One night when performing with theatre of fire ( a load of us Middlesbrough
Jugglers went along for a laugh) there was a photocall at the end of it all.
I thought that it was safe since i knew that i had not put anything in my
hair. What i had forgot was that we had been sprayed with body paint from
the waist upwards and including face and hair. Oops

Flames which i am reliably informed were 18 inch - 2 ft high came from my
head, i was decked by good mate andy and put out. It got such a laugh i did
it again there and then.

PLEASE dont do this, just take my advice their are easier ways of getting a
laugh - also less smelly

Mike

ps Sharon doesn't let me do this anymore, evidently it stinks

Wear natural fibers. Combat trousers or something. Although I wear baggy
clothing, I wear the slightly tighter stuff when working with fire. Skin is
quite hard to set on fire(!), and so for this reason, it is perfectly okay
to have bare arms/torso imho. Also, remember a change of clothes, unless you
don't mind stinking of paraffin and being all sooty (personally, I don't
really mind it. Does that make me a bad person? :P).
Always shake off the wicks. Really.
Relax. If you're worrying too much, chances are you'll freak yourself out
and set fire to your hair. However, don't get cocky. A happy medium between
being over relaxed and over tense is good.
Have damp hair, tie it back, put it under a bandana or whatever (although I
find that I have to take off my beloved baseball cap because it limits my
vision).
Take a torch (of the non flaming kind) with you. I lost my
paraffin/keys/mobile a few times in a large field behind my mate's house
because it was so dark I couldn't find the darn things once my wicks went
out.
Have a friend to show off to, armed with a towel and a bucket of water.
I find it helps your wicks last longer (imho) if you soak them in paraffin
while they are still warm. However, some of the paraffin evaporates. This
means some of it is wasted. Be careful not to breathe in the fumes.
Most importantly, have fun. And don't develop a phobia. :P

Mmmm A memorable Glasto , 5 months spent trying to make sure I could do 50
right hand throws standing on an oil drum and the Haggis puts me in charge
of the fire breathers, had to show a couple how to improve their breathing ,
next thing I know we had a crowd, next thing we know I;m trying to show off,
managed to spray fuel all over head , One last big one ( I'm thinking, just
to finish off !) Whoosh , whole head went up like a rocket , Russell decks
me and grabs a pint of beer from a bystander. Crowds roars out for more!!
I'm carted off to have head packed in Slush puppy ( It works good too, no
scars ) then off to hospital . Now you know why I have a bald head .

Pete

Yep , I still do it but charge triple and spray whole head with water before
the start!!

Hi Preacher,

Try Mike Malley www.ukstars.co.uk . He books a lot of unusual acts
for the University Circuit etc. Steve Rawlings is one of the acts on
his books better known to jugglers.
I once had to share a dressing room with another of his acts - Mr
Methane....fortunately he was saving himself for his stage
performance!
