This is all about money, Muluzi is bankrolling UDF with all the money that he made from being president.  He will then try and use more of this money to persuade people to vote him in as president so that he can then take more money from the government coffers.  One would hope that donors will not stand for this a second time around, but history says otherwise.
Another fear is that he will take enough votes away from Mutharika for John Tembo to nip in the back door as president...

Subject: [ujeni] and in more serious news

When I was in Malawi in January, just about everyone I talked to was very supportive of Bingu as president, so I'm not sure how this story is going to play out...

Ex-Malawi leader wins party poll

Bakili Muluzi
Bakili Muluzi won Malawi's first multi-party elections in 1994

Malawi's former President Bakili Muluzi has won the contest to be named the main opposition party's presidential candidate in next year's poll.

He won 1,950 votes against the 30 won by Vice-President Cassim Chilumpha - his only challenger for the United Democratic Front ticket.

But it is not clear whether Mr Muluzi would be eligible, as he served two terms before stepping down in 2004.

The constitution bans a president from more than two consecutive terms.

Mr Muluzi's supporters say this means he can now stand again but others disagree and the issue is likely to end up in court.

"In my own view, the spirit intended by the constitution was that a president can serve no more than two terms of office but it is a highly contested issue," constitutional expert Edge Kanyangolo told the BBC's Network Africa programme.

Bingu wa Mutharika
Bingu wa Mutharika was elected on a UDF ticket

The BBC's Raphael Tenthani in Blantyre says Mr Muluzi's supporters erupted into song and dance when the results were announced.

He says Mr Chilumpha sat glum-faced, while his backers said the contest was unfair.

The vice-president is under house arrest on treason charges, while Mr Muluzi is party chairman.

"I have accepted this responsibility and I can assure you we will remove Bingu from power," Mr Muluzi said in his acceptance speech.

President Bingu wa Mutharika was elected as the UDF candidate in 2004 but soon afterwards fell out with Mr Muluzi.

Mr Mutharika then formed the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

Mr Muluzi told the BBC that Mr Mutharika had "forced" him to stand again, as he wanted the UDF to be in power.

"After 2004, my intention was to retire," he said, adding that if elected, he would only serve one term of office.

Mr Muluzi ended Hastings Banda's 30-year-rule in 1994, winning the country's first multi-party elections.

In a shameless plug, I just wanted to point out that Mother's Day is fast approaching (on May 11th), and whose mother doesn't love jewelry?  Feel free to peruse the selection on my website.  I'll be adding pieces in the next few days, since the big DC bead show was this past weekend and I'm making new stuff as fast as I can.  I'm also, of course, happy to make custom pieces if you don't quite see what your mom would like.  :)

Arrests follow Malawi 'coup plot'

Heavily armed police in Malawi have arrested four people, including a former army general and an ex-inspector general of police. Police say the arrests follow allegations of clandestine moves to overthrow President Bingu wa Mutharika.

Over the weekend, Mr Mutharika accused his predecessor Bakili Muluzi, who is out of the country, of being behind a plot to remove him by Friday 16 May.

Mr Muluzi's United Democratic Front (UDF) has denied the allegations.

The BBC's Raphael Tenthani in Blantyre says the homes of former army command Gen Joseph Chimayo, former Inspector General of Police Joseph Aironi, UDF Secretary General Kennedy Makwangwala and former Blantyre Mayor John Chikakwiya were raided on Tuesday morning.

They were briefly held at the police headquarters in Blantyre before being transferred to the capital, Lilongwe, for interrogation, he says.

President Mutharika had been involved in talks with the opposition to try and resolve a political impasse that has seen the opposition either boycotting parliament or shooting down government bills.

But at a church meeting on Sunday the president accused Mr Muluzi of being "a coward" for leaving the country while a coup was being planned.

"Malawians, let me tell you this was their plan: That Bakili Muluzi would come back home [from London] on 16th and that would not be as leader of his party, but that he would come back home as president of Malawi after removing me from power," Mr Mutharika said.

Last month, Mr Muluzi, who served two terms before stepping down in 2004, won a contest to be named the UDF's presidential candidate in next year's polls.

It is not clear if he would be eligible to stand as the constitution bans a president from more than two consecutive terms.

President Mutharika was elected as the UDF candidate in 2004 but soon afterwards fell out with Mr Muluzi and formed his own party.

It has been too quiet as of late though. I know everyone may not share my interest in seeing what everyone is up to...but here goes anyway. I will just attach a quick photo and leave it at that. Right now either Margaret or I are always home with the girls.  I work three days a week, we overlap on Tuesdays and then Margaret works 4 days a week.  I look forward to a last paternity leave.  I will take 6 weeks or so come the new year.
I still cannot figure out how I am going to walk up to the shops with three kids under the age of 4.  Strap on to my chest, one to my back, and have Saoirse walk with me...  we shall see.

Gertrude and I got back from another trip to Malawi with some of my students. We
were able to do a bunch of projects in the village. We worked to finish 2 of 4
teacher houses that were started several years ago by some NGO but were left
unfinished. We repaired a bunch of student desks and hired a Form 3 student in
the village to finish them to pay for school fees. We helped paint the local
health center, introduced rabbits as another food source and provider of organic
material to help fertilize a garden. The first 3 were named Adam, Eve & Evaline.
Adam & Eve hit it off pretty quickly which lead to the quote of the trip from my
son "Daddy, why is Adam shaking like that?"

After we worked in the village we traveled north to Nyika & Vwanza Marsh. The
kids had a really good time, but the silly part of all is that several of us got
food poisoning at a tourist spot on the beach. We ate so well in the village,
the kids really liked beans and nsima.

When my school posts the pictures the kids took, I will pass along the link. We
have received a $50,000 matching grant to continue this project for 3 more
years. What to do with $150,000? A good problem to have, and ideas are welcome.

Dan

Muluzi in Malawi re-election bid

Lawyers for former Malawian leader Bakili Muluzi are due in court to argue that he should be able to seek re-election as president next year. Mr Muluzi wants to stand in the elections against President Bingu wa Mutharika, his chosen successor with whom he has subsequently fallen out.

The constitution says a president cannot run again if he has served for two consecutive five-year terms.

Mr Muluzi has served two terms as head of state - from 1994 to 2004.

His lawyers argue that the constitution allows him to seek re-election after a gap of for example five years - as Mr Muluzi has done - after the two consecutive five-year terms.

"We are ready to fight," said one of his lawyers, Jai Banda.

He is being challenged in his bid by a member of his own party, James Phiri.

Mr Phiri's lawyer Christopher Chiphwanya said that it would be against the spirit of the constitution.

"It will be a defeat for democracy to allow Dr Muluzi to stand again as that will encourage life-presidency which Malawians rejected already," he said.

Mr Muluzi ended Hastings Banda's 30-year rule in 1994, winning the country's first multi-party elections.

Correspondents say his attempted come back is motivated by personal differences with President Mutharika.

Mr Muluzi has publicly vowed to unseat President Mutharika.

"I cannot fail to deflate a tyre I personally inflated," he said, implying that he was solely responsible for making Mr Mutharika president.

In May, Mr Muluzi was arrested for allegedly plotting to overthrow Mr Mutharika's government.

The month before, Mr Muluzi won a contest to be named the presidential candidate of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in next year's polls.

President Mutharika was elected as the UDF candidate in 2004 but soon afterwards fell out with Mr Muluzi and formed his own party.

He said his former political associates were opposed to his anti-corruption drive.

Greetings Matt,

I was gone at this time in June...in Arizona with a granddaughter from Merced and our daughter who lives in Phoenix.  I'm cleaning up email and find that there were emails I missed.

We had 3 under 4 (3 yrs. 8 months apart 1st to 3rd).  I'm trying to remember.  I used to walk them about 1/2 mile to the grocery store and back.  We only had one car at the time and Don usually took it to work.  How did I do that????  I must have used the stroller with a baby seat in it for Mike when he was too small to sit in it,and then there was a seat in back facing me and I think I had a harness and leash for Ted, the oldest, so he couldn't run out into the street.  I KNOW I couldn't have carried them both, though we did have one of the first Gerry carriers.  Hey, those harnesses may look strange, like you're walking your dog, but they are great!  Have no idea how I got the groceries home.

Congratulations in advance and may this new McNulty be as wonderful as the first 2.  We'll look for pictures.  We're expecting a new granddaughter the end of august...our first in 12 years.  Can I send pictures too?

Love to your whole growing family,

Cathy

My friend,
We see that here in NM a lot. There is also a gentle humming in the
air from Taos. Apparently the earth geomagnetic lines intersect at a
congruity close to Taos that channels positive energy to anyone
living nearby. Explains the presence of Shirley MacLaine in Sante Fe
but I digress. Why couldn't she live in Sedona closer to Dudders,
but again I digress.
My friend, please add "Writing" to your calling. Your descriptive

dilemma of going shopping with three little ones. My recommendation,
and the picture that came to mind: BIG LONG CHITENJE. Bundle two in
front one to each teat if you will, one in back, frees up both hands
to hold bags, or to be able to feed the baby, or to pat the children,
and off you go........
Congratulations to you and the Missus on the new wee one in Sept. and
please use SPF 100 or more. Your children, like us, want you both
around for a long long time for the company and at least more of your
delightful writing.........Ta-ra.

I sooo agree with the Rs.  I love hearing the descriptions of life at the McNulty's.

And as a mom of 3 under 4 (and for a very looong 6 months 3 under 3!) I recommend a Baby Bjorn and a double stroller, just be sure to check the stroller before you get to the check out line, you will undoubtedly find the oddest combination of nonessential merchandise skillfully “acquire” as you shopped.  The low hanging fruit so to speak.

Here in Georgia that glowing orb is a fiery disc that seemingly takes up the entire sky 20 hours  a day causing heat induced hallucinations and mirages all year round soooo.....we are fleeing(Flee OJ! But now I digress) to South Africa to the advantage of it’s temperate year round climate among other things (Capetown!  Live kwasa kwasa!  Good cheap wine!  Ostrich biltong!).

We move the whole kit ‘n caboodle (always wanted to write that) - husband, 3 kids and of course the long suffering dog - in September.  Look us up in Pretoria if anyone is that way, you’ve always got a bed if you can stand the noise.

My new email address is belle@..., but this comcast one will still be in use for another 6 weeks or so.

Happy trails,

2 under 2 were so hard for us, our minds still say no to 3 under 5 although our hearts say yes. The fact that I'm pushing 40 this year doesn't help. Do I want adolescents in the house after 55? Decisions....

We're probably going to spend this Christmas break in Cape Town. The last time I was there was my last stop going home from Malawi. On Mandela's 80th birthday I got on a 747 from Cape Town to Miami. Didn't he just turn 90? I've spent way too much time here.

But now I digress) to South Africa to the advantage of it's temperate year round climate among other things (Capetown!  Live kwasa kwasa!  Good cheap wine!  Ostrich biltong!).

We move the whole kit 'n caboodle (always wanted to write that) - husband, 3 kids and of course the long suffering dog - in September.  Look us up in Pretoria if anyone is that way, you've always got a bed if you can stand the noise.

My new email address is belle@..., but this comcast one will still be in use for another 6 weeks or so.

Congrats, Liz!

Sounds great. I got a Fulbright to finish my study of orphans, so if you're in the mood for a safari in Uganda (the gorillas are a must-see), feel free to drop by sometime between late Jan-Apr 2009. That goes for everyone who might like to visit lovely Uganda!

Best,

This comes from Tom Leonard (Fiji 1980-82), who taught at the Fiji Institute of Technology in Suva. He then worked in the marketing groups at Netscape, AOL, and Netflix and now works as an internet marketing consultant. His company, LEFT Marketing (www.leftmarketing.com) specializes in database marketing, search, affiliate marketing, and eDM projects. The most recent focus has been working in the growing fields of political and video internet marketing.

He dropped me this note today..

“I am launching a web site supporting Barack Obama which you can see at www.rpcvsforobama.com.  This is my own project and I have no direct connection with the Obama campaign.  I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Fiji in the early 1980’s.

I feel strongly that when he is elected President, the image of America and Americans will change for the better around the world – and that will be a good thing for the Peace Corps.  I also think that there is a tremendous amount of support for him in the Peace Corps/RPCV community.  I am glad I don’t have to promote an RPCVsForMcCain.com site.

As the internet has become an important tool for the political campaigns this year, I wanted to establish a site with three goals:

·      a huge goal of reaching 10,000 RPCV’s and generating 100,000 votes for Obama

·      provide the ability for members to register and provide information on their background which will lead to social interaction

·      provide a forum for RPCV’s to give input on how the Peace Corps should be run in the upcoming Obama administration

To reach out to 10,000 RPCV’s I need everyone’s help.  I invite you to come to the site and register.  Provide information about yourself and your Peace Corps experience to make connections with other people who share similar ideas on how this country should be run. Then tell your friends and acquaintances about the site.

We also ask that each member pledge to gather at least 10 other votes for Barack in November.  If our group can generate over 100,000 votes, we actually can make a difference. Just include the number of votes you can get in your profile and we will add them up.

My background is in internet marketing and not politics.  But as the Obama campaign is proving, the internet can be a very powerful political force.

I look forward to your support and appreciate your help in putting Barack Obama in the White House in January!  You can reach me at tom@... with any questions, comments, or ideas.

Thanks for your time.

Hey all.  Below is a survey about Palin.  Interesting.  Check it out if interested.

On a different note, Awaisi awiri are all fine and dandy.  The boy (Ben) is now 8 1/2 and in 3rd grade.   He is very interested in music (piano and singing).  We should  have a you tube of a recitial up some time in November.    Photo of summer vacation attached.  I (Deb) am teaching 2nd grade, and Rand is still teaching HS.  Working too hard.

We have recently been in touch with many old frineds (Kymu, Bruner, Riz Bell, Lacher, and Shock), and those chats/visits brought back a taste of the good old days!    I'm thinking another big reunion must not be too far away.  The Ujeni has been too quiet.  Let's shake it up!

Stay well and don't work too hard,

The poll asks:
Is Sarah Palin qualified to be VP?  Yes or No.  When last checked the ayes were leading. You do not have to give your name or email to vote.

It's very simple; here's the link:

The question on the poll is wrong:  SHe is qualified in that she is at least 35 years of age, natural born citizen, not a felon, etc.

The question should be does she have the necessry experience...not qualifications....

The question on the poll is wrong:  SHe is qualified in that she is at least 35 years of age, natural born citizen, not a felon, etc.

The question should be does she have the necessry experience...not qualifications....

Deb

The GOP is apparently urging people to vote in a PBS poll to demonstrate wide support for the proposition that Sarah Palin is qualified to be a heart beat away from the Oval Office.

The poll asks:
Is Sarah Palin qualified to be VP?  Yes or No.  When last checked the ayes were leading. You do not have to give your name or email to vote.

It's very simple; here's the link:
