So far OK. Waiting to see what happens tomorrow when the bullheaded opposition supporters march towards city center against the rockheaded security forces. It’s late here and I’ve no more optimism left in me. I expect tomorrow to be a not-so-nice day.

Just got two messages from the US embassy, the first since this mess began. The first at 5:30pm suggesting we stay indoors and keep a low profile. The second at 9:30pm informing us a rally was scheduled for today. Just in time before it’s safe to go to work tomorrow.

Make no mistake, you are on your own in this world, be it Peace Corps, New Orleans, or whatever. Never assume somebody will be there to help you out.

What a year it has been!  The events of 07 really kicked off in early 06 for Jeff and I.    In Feb 06 Jeff got accepted into NCIS as a Federal Agent, and this began a 14 month separation for us when he left for a 4 month training in Southern Georgia, and then was stationed in San Diego.  We saw each other at least every other weekend during his training, and covered the state of GA, and parts of Florida, with our weekend getaways! These ranged from elegant wine tastings in the Appalachian Mountains, to canoeing in the alligator infested Okeefenokee Swamp in FL, and camping on a floating campsite surrounded by alligators.   We drove Jeff cross country in Aug 06, and began visiting each other cross country every month or so.   In January 07 I learned of a new position created within my company, UnitedHealth Care in the Pacific region.  With the acquisition of a managed care company on the west coast, they were looking for someone to head up their corporate health and wellness strategies.  This is what I was doing for UHC in Atlanta, so, of course I applied, and to my absolute delight, I got the job in April! After only 2 years in Georgia, thus began the whirlwind of packing, yard sales, open houses and going away parties.  I was very fortunate in this market to sell my home in 13 days, and for a profit!  I loved my home, friends and neighborhood in GA, but Jeff and I missed each other terribly, and finally we were back together after so many months apart!
In April I moved from my great big colonial in Atlanta to Jeff’s one ROOM (not one bedroom) apartment on the beach in San Diego for 2 and a half months while we looked for a house.   In July, we bought a great home in a fun little beachside community in San Diego called Ocean Beach.  It’s a great, laid back CA town, and we live walking distance from the beach and the longest fishing pier on the West Coast.  Check out www.oceanbeachonline.com.  for pictures of our neighborhood.
In June, we got the news that Jeff would be serving in Iraq for 4 months beginning in Dec, and needed to go back to GA for a month of training.  So we booked a vacation to Belize upon his return from training in Sept to get away from everyday stress and enjoy some time together before he had to leave.  We rented a 4x4 and spent 8 days cruising around Belize, scuba diving, caving, dodging Hurricane Felix, and looking at potential real estate investment opportunities.  It was an amazing vacation!
We spent the fall working on our home, exploring southern CA, and cheering on the Red Sox and Patriots from a waterfront sports bar we stumbled upon. In November, Jeff traveled to New York to help cheer on the Patriots to their win over Buffalo.
We kicked off an amazing holiday season by hosting our very first attempt at Thanksgiving dinner for 14 of our friends, and thank God they all survived our cooking!  With Jeff’s departure for Iraq scheduled for Dec. 26, we couldn’t make it home to MA for Christmas this year, but we decided to take a long weekend trip to Temecula, Southern CA’s wine country, which boasts 33 wineries and some spectacular views.  On Sat night, at a sunset picnic overlooking a beautiful lake, Jeff asked me to marry him!  After lots of jumping around and yelling, Jeff confirmed that there was a YES in there somewhere.  Jeff will be home in May this year, and we are working on securing a location to get married in New England hopefully this summer.  (Or maybe next)
Finally, I was lucky to able to end the year with my family, as I flew home for New Years, and we celebrated Christmas as a family on New Years day!
We hope you and your loved ones had a happy and healthy 2007, and are in for an even better 2008!!!

Love, Kym, Jeff, Iwe and Mahalo

My school is receiving applications for several positions, and we received one from Jennifer Jacoby.  Just wondering if she is part of this discussion group.  If she would like more information about the school, please let me know.  Secondly, we also received a math application from a guy that was in Mzuzu long before my time, but I thought that it was interesting to receive one application from someone who was in Malawi, let alone two.  Imagine 3 RPCV's from the same country working at the same school, not saying that it will happen, but it would be cool.

Pictures for you! Shutterfly

From: Christine Chumbler

Greetings all! I was very fortunate to just return from a work trip to
Malawi, my first time back since leaving in '97. Thought you might
like to see some of the pics. Some explanations: Doro is my
counterpart's daughter and I'm putting her thru school. Vincent is the
gentleman I hired to drive me down to Liwonde/Zomba. Liwonde is where
my counterpart (Sam) and his family live now. And Zomba, of course, is
where the host family live. Lilongwe looks like it has a lot more
money now (mini-golf!), but the rest of the country is much as I
remember it. Plus cell phones. Everyone I spoke with is very much in
favor of the new(ish) government. TV Malawi is goofy. And it was great
to speak Chichewa again (such as I could). All in all, a wonderful
trip. Thank you, US taxpayers!

Greetings Christine...

Really enjoyed pictures, thanks.  How long were you there?  What were you doing for work?  We've heard from Alan de Brauw who was recently back there for work and talked by telephone to our host mother, Rosemary N'goma (in Florida recently visiting her daughter).  They both said that the vendors are gone from the streets.  When we were back in 2004 they had become so thick , that instead of being a good, cheap way to buy Plastico and every manner of goods, they almost totally blocked foot traffic.

Alan said he saw some good changes, and Rosemary said she thinks that Mutharika is doing a good job.  How did you feel about what you saw?   We miss it and hope we'll get back again someday.

Hi Cathy,
The USAID mission in Lilongwe requested that I go out to train their new communications officer and help them develop a communications strategy to get the word out about all the work the USG does in the country.  Twist my arm.  So I was in Lilongwe about 2 weeks, and then took a long weekend at the end to go down to Liwonde and Zomba.  I didn't get as far as Blantyre and so didn't get to see the old site (Michiru); that'll have to happen next trip.

Your sources are correct.  There are indeed very few street vendors.  The curio sellers have been removed from the main PTC in City Center (which is no longer a shopping hub) and are confined to the area in front of the old post office.  And the sidewalks are completely clear in Old Town.  There are also more new restaurants in Lilongwe than I could shake a stick at.

Every Malawian I spoke with was very enthusiastic about the Mutharika government.  The Americans there are a little more suspect about potential "African big man" tendancies.  Malawi also just went from being a Taiwan supporter to a China supporter, which raised more than a few eyebrows.  Nonetheless, my host mother, who is a teacher in a govt school in Zomba, said she had definitely noticed improvements in support for schools, feeding programs, textbooks, etc.  If there's actual improvement on the ground, I guess it's hard to find fault.  Pang'ono pang'ono...

Mr Mugabe is standing for re-election next month against three confirmed challengers.   (Can't imagine a valid or peaceful election)

And inflation is over 66,000% per year, which is absolutely unimaginable.

Interestingly, tho, one of the presidential challengers is someone from within Mugabe's ZANU-PF party (or he was until he declared his candidacy, then they kicked him out).  He (Simba Makoni) probably has the best chance of any of them to unseat Mugabe, but even if he does (and that's a huge if) he hasn't yet given any specifics for what he'll do differently to turn things around.

Just like Kenya, Zim was once a great up and coming "developing" nation.  It too has sunken to lows that no one could ever have imagined.  I was in Zim in late 2004 and I made a point to change some Kwacha to U.S. dollars, thinking I'd get a better exchange rate in Zim with the strong U.S. economy; ironically it was just the opposite; the Kwacha brought me a greater return than the U.S. dollar.  Makes sense to me now though...people travel from Harare to Blantyre to purchase goods and then bring them back into Zim.

I would love to travel back for the 2010 World Cup (soccer) taking place in South Africa and neighboring countries but aside from overly priced Botswana, I don't feel it's worth the trip at this point.  The countries are either racked with crime and corruption or crazy unstable economies.
I wish for the best but I'm doubtful things will get better within our lifetimes.

though I would ask....

I have applied to the general announcement for APCD programming and training

Does anyone have any idea as to how the country assignments are made? Can
you influence or express a preference? Or even find out what the potential
postings are?

With a husband who would also like meaningful work I am less flexible than I

Hi Liz,

Per my understanding as a former APCD, APCD and PTO positions are all country-specific.  (As a side note, we didn't have a PTO in Malawi, but it's basically the sub-director of the office, overseeing both the programming (inc. APCDs) and training offices, and reporting to the CD.)  The only PC positions that are open to worldwide assignment are Volunteer and Country Director.

Good luck!

Deepa

APCD country assignment process?

Posted by: "Elizabeth Bell" elizabeth_bell@...   lizbmeaney

Sat Feb 16, 2008 9:01 am (PST)

Hey there everyone, I know many folks here are, or were, PC staff so I
though I would ask....

I have applied to the general announcement for APCD programming and training
officers (16 postings).

Does anyone have any idea as to how the country assignments are made? Can
you influence or express a preference? Or even find out what the potential
postings are?

With a husband who would also like meaningful work I am less flexible than I
was as a PCV applicant!

Thanks!
Liz

Hi Deepa,

I’ve seen other announcements for APCD/PTOs in the past that were country-specific, but I just applied to a general announcement that was non-specific/worldwide (it closed the 15th).  It did say that there are 16 postings.  It must be a new recruitment method (CDC just started doing something similar for international positions for public health advisors, but you could check off all the countries you would consider a posting in).

Are there PTOs at both the country and regional-level?

Hi folks,

Has anyone lived/worked in Beijing?

I'd be particularly interested in talking with anyone who is/was there as a

Still no word on the presidential elections, but this is huge too...

Mugabe's Zanu-PF loses majority

Robert Mugabe
President Mugabe has ruled Zimbabwe since independence in 1980

President Robert Mugabe's party has lost its majority in parliament, the Zimbabwe Election Commission says.

It says Mr Mugabe's Zanu-PF party has taken 94 of the 207 contested seats, while opposition parties have won 105. One seat has gone to an independent.

Earlier, the opposition MDC said its leader Morgan Tsvangirai had won the presidential election. Zanu-PF said this was "wishful thinking".

The official presidential election results have not yet been declared.

'Anxiety and disappointment'

The MDC released its own results to back up its claim of victory in the presidential poll.

MDC Party Secretary General Tendai Biti said Mr Tsvangirai had won 50.3% of the vote to President Robert Mugabe's 43.8%, so avoiding a run-off.

In his news conference, Mr Biti said there was "anxiety and disappointment" at the failure of the Zimbabwe Election Commission to declare presidential results.

But Mr Biti said that if the election commission decided that neither of the main candidates had won outright, the MDC would be prepared to take part in a second round.

'Irresponsible'

Deputy Information Minister Bright Matonga said the claim of victory was irresponsible and could incite violence.

And, interviewed by the BBC, he said the pattern of results from the parliamentary election suggested that there would be a second round in the presidential election.

Asked if Mr Mugabe would take part he said: "Only the top two go for a run-off, he cannot bring in another candidate to replace another, which means that President Mugabe and Mr Tsvangirai will go for the run-off if there is going to be a run-off."

Mr Matonga added that the delay in officially declaring the result was due to the complexity of the process, with 75% of voters living in rural areas.
