The Time Is Now—Get Out the Vote for
Amendment No. 2837

Dear Theresa,
Just a few hours ago, Sen. Harry Reid announced that Sen. Bernie Sanders' Amendment No. 2837 is on the schedule for a hearing tomorrow, Tuesday, in the Senate.
Some of us started to despair that single-payer healthcare—Medicare for All—would ever be heard in Congress.  So many times, excitement and anticipation have been replaced by disappointment.
But now, in a historic turn of events, single-payer healthcare will finally be heard in this Congress by this Senate. Single-payer combines the best in ideology and practicality—public financing and private delivery—put together in one commonsense plan for all. It is a plan that each side of the aisle can embrace without compromising principle.
We've made plenty of calls to Harry Reid to insist that the Sanders' Amendment get its hearing and vote, and now we should call Senator Reid to thank him and express our happiness at his decision.
Make the calls to Sen. Harry Reid NOW.

• Las Vegas, NV, office: (702) 388-5020
• US Capitol Switchboard: (202) 224-3121

Thanks are not enough, however.  Our senators need to know that we want them to vote Yes on Amendment No. 2837.  And they need to know it now.
Get your senators' phone numbers here and tell them to vote Yes on the Sanders, Brown, and Burris Amendment No. 2837.
We may have a great deal to celebrate tomorrow.  Make sure you do your part to make it happen!

The fight for health insurance reform has entered its final push. As President Obama says, now is when we have to
work harder than ever to make sure we get it done.
With the Republicans apparently saving their most outrageous attacks for last, we need your help even more in this
final phase. If you contribute in the next 48 hours, we'll give you the chance to attend our upcoming dinner with
President Obama and even get your picture taken with him.
But you have to act in the next 48 hours to be automatically entered for your chance to win.
Contribute today to support the final push for health insurance reform in the next 48 hours and you'll be
automatically entered for a chance to win a trip to Miami, Florida (airfare and hotel included). You and your
guest will attend our dinner with President Obama on October 26th and even get your photo taken with President
Obama.
Saying that Speaker Pelosi should be "put in her place," circulating offensive web videos that compare health
insurance reform to Nazi genocide...the Republicans' attacks have no shame. But thanks to you, they get a strong
response from us.
Considering how hard you work to restore civility to our politics, we want to reward you with a chance to meet
President Obama and even get your photo with him for keepsake.
You have a chance to tell President Obama that you stand with him against these Republican smear tactics.
But there's just 48 hours left to act.
Contribute today to support the final push for health insurance reform in the next 48 hours and you'll be
automatically entered for a chance to win a trip to Miami, Florida (airfare and hotel included). You and your
guest will attend our dinner with President Obama on October 26th and even get your photo taken with President Obama.
With the Republican attacks on health insurance reform and our entire change agenda coming every day, we need
your grassroots dollars to keep fighting back.
Contribute in the next 48 hours and be automatically entered for your chance to meet President Obama and get your
 picture taken with him.
Thanks,

Rep. Chris Van Hollen
DCCC Chairman
P.S. The Republican attacks on President Obama and Speaker Pelosi have no shame. But thanks to you, every one of
them has a strong response. Contribute in the next 48 hours to support the final push for health insurance reform

AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, appearing on MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show,” says the Senate Finance Committee’s health care reform bill must be improved with the addition of a public health insurance option. It’s the only way to hold insurance companies “accountable.”

It's time to deliver    Thursday, October 15, 2009 5:40 PM
From: "Jeremy Bird, BarackObama.com" <info@...>To: "Theresa J. Steed" <Quechick007@...>

Theresa J. --

After months of negotiations, the health reform debate is about to move to the full Congress for the first time.
With the insurance industry lobby pulling out all the stops to derail progress, we need everyone who supports reform
to weigh in. So here's the plan: Set a new OFA record by getting 100,000 calls to Congress placed or committed to on
 a single day.
On Tuesday, October 20th, OFA volunteers will gather at "Time to Deliver" call parties and neighborhood outreach
events across the country. We'll get together in living rooms and public locations, and reach out to friendly voters
whose voices are particularly critical in this debate. We'll talk to them about the President's plan and then we'll
ask them to call on their representatives to support reform.
President Obama will be joining a call party and then speaking directly to all the other events that evening via an
exclusive live webcast, sharing the latest info on the fight for reform and our campaign for change.
It's an ambitious plan -- and it depends on you. Find a "Time to Deliver" event near you, or sign up to host one in
your area.
Participating (or hosting) is surprisingly easy. No special experience is required, and we'll provide simple
step-by-step instructions. You'll gather with friends, neighbors, and OFA supporters from nearby, and together
you'll have a great time while making a huge difference.
We're closer to health reform now than we've ever been, but we must not take anything for granted. The insurance
industry is throwing millions of dollars a day and an army of lobbyists at Congress to stop reform.
If we can get 100,000 calls to Congress placed or committed to on a single day it will ensure the people's voices
are heard louder than the lobbyists -- but it won't be easy. Everything hinges on folks like you stepping up and
joining in.
Can we count on you? Please sign up to attend or host a Time to Deliver event on October 20th:
Thanks for making it happen,

A MESSAGE FROM SENATOR PATRICK LEAHY;
(A really smart great guy):

America's health insurance companies have had a pretty sweet deal for decades.
They can pick and choose their customers and deny coverage to anyone with any sort of
pre-existing condition -- even acne. They can get away with dropping your coverage when you get sick.
And since 1945 they have been exempt from the antitrust regulations that apply to nearly every other
industry, rules that protect consumers from anti-competitive business practices like price-fixing.
That's why, as part of our broader health care reform effort, I just introduced legislation in the
Senate to eliminate the outdated insurance industry antitrust exemption and force health insurance
companies to compete fairly -- like virtually every other business in America. Please e-mail your
members of Congress today, urging them to support the Health Insurance Industry
Antitrust Enforcement Act, S. 1681 and H.R. 3596.Passing health care reform with an effectivive
Public Option is one key way to promote competition in the health insurance marketplace, but we must
also eliminate the unjustified and unnecessary antitrust exemption currently enjoyed by insurance
companies.
A recent study found that one or two insurance giants dominate 94 percent of American health insurance
markets, meaning every year consumers end up paying more money for less coverage. When insurance
companies know they don't have to compete, they don't. When they know they can get awaywith raising
your premiums every year, they do. And when they know they can deny you coverage without consequence,
they'll leave you high and dry. The Health Insurance Industry Antitrust Enforcement Act,
which I introduced in the Senate last week, is not the be all and end all of necessary reform,
but it is a key way we can give consumers more choice in the health insurance marketplace. Please e-mail
your friends, family, and members of Congress today, urging them to support the Health Insurance Industry

WRite your Senators to pass the following:  Antitrust Enforcement Act, S. 1681 and H.R. 3596.

It's time for the insurance industry to play by the same good-competition rules as nearly
every other industry in America. I've proposed similar legislation in the past, and Congress failed to
pass it. So we must redouble our efforts this time around and urge Congress to support it as part of our

broader health care reform efforts. Thank you for emailing Congress today to support this important
legislation.
Sincerely,

Patrick Leahy
U.S. Senator
P.S. The insurance industry is actively lobbying Congress to maintain the status quo -- but the status quo
is unacceptable. Let's make sure your Members of Congress know where their constituents stand on the matter

Just say no to ...Sunday, September 27, 2009 8:43 PM

Afghanistan FUNDING!

Dear Theresa,
Congress is close to final passage of the $625.8 billion 2010 Defense Budget, which contains approximately
$128.2 billion to conduct the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq through September 2010. So far the White House
has offered no timetable and no "exit strategy" for Afghanistan. On the contrary, General McCrystal is
calling for tens of thousands of additional American troops and a long-term commitment, which could
tie the United States down in Afghanistan for years to come.
This is the original meaning of a "quagmire"--when every step taken makes it harder and harder to move.
At this rate, we will never leave Afghanistan. Members of Congress need to get a powerful message from us
that we need a different policy in Afghanistan--one that emphasizes diplomacy and humanitarian assistance.
Without a plan to bring the war to an end, Congress should not give another "blank check" to the White
House for continued fighting. Progressive Democrats of America, United for Peace and Justice, CODEPINK,
Just Foreign Policy, and Voters for Peace believe that a public outcry is vitally important now, when the
Pentagon is exerting pressure on the President and Congress to escalate a costly, destructive, and
ultimately unwinnable war. Join the National Call-in Day September 30 and tell your Senators to unite
with Sen. Russ Feingold and and ask your Congressional Representatives to vote against the 2010 Defense
Appropriations bill. When making this call, urge them to cosponsor Congressman James McGovern's H.R. 2404
that would require President Obama to provide an exit plan from Afghanistan no later than December 2009.
Prepare for your call by checking the list of co-sponsors of the McGovern bill . Watch Representative
McGovern as he calls for an exit strategy and in case you missed it, please sign Tom Hayden's
Afghanistan petition here.

Take action on the September 30 National Call-in Day:
No Exit Strategy? Stop the Funding!
Call the Capitol Hill Switchboard at 202-224-3121.

Dining Room Table Wednesday, September 30, 2009 9:24 AM
From: "Barney Frank" <dccc@...>To: "Theresa J Steed" <Quechick007@...>

*** DEADLINE MIDNIGHT TONIGHT -- ONLY $83,231 TO GO. CONTRIBUTE NOW. ***
Theresa J --
They rant. Right wingers all over the country spent much of this summer trying to intimidate us by turning open
forums into ugly shout-fests. Republican leaders were perfectly happy to encourage this, and while conservative
politicians did not themselves exactly rant, they did distort the same, and yes, lie.
I gave my response to these ridiculous tactics at a public meeting in August, and I have since thought that I might
have been too harsh -- on dining room tables.
Now you can reinforce the message I gave and send an even stronger one.
With the media closely watching both parties' third quarter fundraising totals, nothing would put fear in the
hearts of the right wing extremists who are propagating this kind of nonsense than for us to out-raise them online.
Right now we're just $83,231 away from our Million Dollar Goal.

Show your support for President Obama's health insurance reform. Help us raise just $83,231 more by our Midnight
Deadline. For every dollar you give, a group of Democrats will match with two dollars of their own.
The lunacy we saw this summer by the right-wing fringe isn't letting up. Following his contemptible outburst at
President Obama, Republican Congressman Joe Wilson raised over $2 million in contributions.
But even worse, Wilson's now taking his act on the road, traveling the country to raise money for Republican
House Members and candidates. We have to respond.
This is make-or-break time for health insurance reform. With the media closely watching, President Obama needs
grassroots Democrats to stand strong. Your support will help us gain the momentum we need to finish the job on health
 insurance reform.
Contribute $35, $50 or more by MIDNIGHT tonight and your gift will be triple matched by other Democrats.
Thank you,
Barney Frank
P.S. This is make-or-break time for health insurance reform. The media is closely watching to see which side has
 the momentum. Please give generously.
*A group of Democrats will match your donation today. For every dollar that you donate, these Democrats will
donate two dollars of their own.

Senator Webb on Meet the Press Sunday to Discuss
U.S. Policy in Afghanistan
"U.S. Must Articulate Clear & Attainable Goals, Defined Endpoint"
- Sen. Jim Webb
This Sunday, Senator Jim Webb will appear on Meet the Press to discuss U.S. policy in Afghanistan.
In recent weeks, Senator Webb has emphasized that the Obama administration's review of U.S. policies
in Afghanistan must contain clear and attainable objectives with a defined and understandable
endpoint and warned that the United States runs the risk of being perceived as an occupying force.
Responding to General McChrystal's recommendations, Senator Webb stated that, "we have reached
a turning point in Afghanistan as to whether we are going to formally adopt nation-building as a policy."
During a September 17 Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on Afghanistan, Webb discussed what
he views to be the two "countervailing realities" of military strategy in that country. On the one hand,
he warned that the United States could "reach a tipping point where the military presence and operations
might actually be counterproductive—where people believe that we are an occupying force." On the other hand, Webb

warned that the administration's plans to build a much larger Afghani national army and police force lack historical
precedent.Commenting on plans to build a larger national army in the absence of a strong central government
in Afghanistan, Webb said, "We run the risk, as I have mentioned to General Petraeus and
General McChrystal, of allowing our success to be defined by something that has never happened before
and something that we can't totally control. This is a tribal society that has not had much experience with a
national army." Webb noted that in Afghanistan's entire history, there have only been a few decades where it has
fielded an effective Afghan national army, when it numbered approximately 90,000 troops in the years up to 1979
invasion by the Soviet Union, when the national army disintegrated as an effective force.
Similarly, during a September 15 Armed Services Committee hearing with Admiral Michael Mullen,
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Webb called for a vigorous debate on America's future military
presence in Afghanistan. Webb emphasized that any new U.S. strategy must be "valid and achievable,
and must have attainable goals that are clearly articulated—to our side, to the other side, and to the American people.
These goals must also have an understandable endpoint so that we know when we are done, particularly in a military
sense."
Senator Webb has also questioned the wisdom of fighting international terrorism through the construction
of large military structures such as those that have been used in Iraq and now in Afghanistan, pointing out that
in strategic terms, the billions of dollars spent on such positions tend to tie down U.S. forces, to the advantage of
international terrorist units that remain mobile. He cited the departure of Al Qaeda from Iraq as an example, and
instead favored "highly maneuverable forces against an intrinsically mobile enemy."
