Soaring forests... or stumps?Friday, November 21, 2008 9:26 AM From: "Kathy Kilmer, The Wilderness Society" <action@...>To: "Theresa J. Steed" <Quechick007@...> November 21, 2008 Dear Theresa J.,
Oregon's ancient forests are at risk of large scale commercial logging.
Reject the Bush Administration's plans NOW! President Bush's final day in office comes in exactly two months and his Administration is clearly aiming to use the remaining time to get as many environmental rollbacks on the books as possible. An extreme case in point: The ancient forests of western Oregon, now under threat of large scale, industrial clearcut logging.
You can help us protect Oregon's ancient forests from last-minute handouts to the timber industry. Take action now!
This isn't just about a small plot of land. The Administration's plan endangers more than two million acres of ancient forests of cedar and fir, home to black bears and deer, as well as endangered birds like the marbled murrelet and spotted owl. It's an area whose trees, wetlands and thousands of miles of rushing rivers act as a buffer against encroaching changes from global warming.
The Bush Administration's proposals would fragment this old growth ecosystem with the desolation of stumps and logging roads.
We're already having an impact – through our efforts, the Bush Administration reversed itself and finally agreed to accept public comments on this plan. Now we need to flood the Administration with letters in opposition to this radical plan.
Don't sit idly by. Speak up to reject the Bush Administration's plans NOW.
Time and time again, we have successfully kept this Administration from wreaking havoc on our nation's wilderness. It would be a travesty if, during the last days of the Bush Administration, we lost such a legacy through inaction.
In these final days of 2008, let's do all we can to save Oregon's ancient forests.
Thank you for your commitment.
Sincerely,
Kathy Kilmer The Wilderness Society

Stop Bush's last-minute attacks on our ancient forestsSunday, November 23, 2008 8:17 AM From: "Bill Meadows, The Wilderness Society" <action@...>To: "Theresa J. Steed" <Quechick007@...> November 23, 2008 Dear Theresa J.,
The Bush Administration is working hard to roll back environmental protections.
Don't let Oregon's ancient forests fall victim.
Donate to The Wilderness Society today!
In the past few weeks, we've been working hard to stop the Bush Administration from putting some of the last old-growth forests in Oregon on the chopping block. Now we need your help in these final hours.
History shows that outbound administrations often slip in their most extreme initiatives in their final days. So, in these last months of Bush's presidency, we can expect he'll do whatever he can to undo critical environmental protections. That's why we're asking you to make a donation today. Doing so will help The Wilderness Society stop industrial clearcut logging in Oregon's old-growth forests.
Centuries-old trees depend on our vigilance, not to mention the spotted owls, black bears and marbled murrelets that make Oregon's ancient forests their home. With your help, we can ensure that America's old-growth forests will be there for our grandchildren, and their children.
Donate today. Help The Wilderness Society defend Oregon's ancient forests and our natural heritage.
Thank you for all you do.
Best wishes,
Bill Meadows, President

Help Rep. Nadler Block Bush PardonsSunday, November 23, 2008 2:40 PM From: "PDA Impeachment Team" <info@...>To: Quechick007@... -----Inline Attachment Follows-----
Rep. Jerrold Nadler is Leading the Effort Against Bush's Blanket Pardons. Act NOW to Help Him. Dear Theresa, Rep. Jerrold Nadler Thanks to our allies Democrats.com who launched a massive movement against pardons. Bob Fertik called on activists to sign a petition to our Representatives. More than 46,000 people took action and Congress took notice. On Friday, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) introduced H.Res. 1531 urging Bush not to pardon administration officials for crimes Bush authorized. The resolution asserts: President George W. Bush may have committed crimes involving the mistreatment of detainees, the extraordinary rendition of individuals to countries known to engage in torture, illegal surveillance of United States citizens, unlawful leaks of classified information, obstruction of justice, political interference with the conduct of the Justice Department, and other illegal acts.... Bush has been urged to grant preemptive pardons to senior administration officials who might face criminal prosecution for actions taken in the course of their official duties....
Nadler's resolution urges Congress to investigate those crimes and any pardons relating to them, and urges the Attorney General (current or future) to appoint an Independent Counsel to prosecute those crimes.
Rep. Nadler chairs the House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties and can move the resolution forward either during the lame duck session in December or when the 111th Congress convenes in January.
Help us build on Rep. Nadler's work. Support PDA now. Support our Impeachment efforts: Order buttons, bumper stickers, etc. while they last.
Please help us persuade Representatives to co-sponsor H.Res. 1531 by signing the new petition: http://www.democrats.com/nadler-pardons?cid=ZGVtczE2ZGVtcw==

POST-ELECTION BRIEFING | Looking Ahead A new Administration and a new Congress are about to take office in Washington, offering hope for real progress on issues that are critically important to women and families.
On November 14, we held a post-election briefing featuring some of the nation’s leading experts — Amy Walter, Editor-in-Chief of National Journal’s Hotline; leading health policy strategist Chris Jennings; Hilary Rosen of CNN and Huffington Post; and National Partnership President Debra Ness — to discuss work and family issues, health care reform, reproductive health, and fairness in the workplace.
The National Partnership is dedicated to advancing concrete policies that will improve the lives of women and families across the nation. And we will make the most of every opportunity that lies ahead.
Action: While we know these are hard economic times for everyone, we are encouraged about the possibilities that lie ahead. That’s why we need your support, now more than ever.
>>Please support our work >>Read about our key priorities >>Watch the webcast WORK/FAMILY | Victory! Paid Sick Days in Milwaukee On November 4th, Milwaukee voters handed workers a huge victory by approving a city-wide paid sick and safe days initiative with an overwhelming 69 percent of the vote. Under the new Milwaukee ordinance, full-time workers in large businesses will now be able to earn up to 9 paid sick days a year and workers in smaller businesses with fewer than 10 employees will earn up to 5 days a year. Workers may use their sick days for their own care and medical treatment or to care for a sick family member, and those experiencing domestic violence or sexual assault can use it to promote their safety.
This decisive victory makes Milwaukee the third locality to guarantee workers paid sick days, after San Francisco and Washington, DC. It also sends a powerful message to our national and state elected leaders: working people strongly support a basic workplace standard of paid sick days! The National Partnership is working with advocates in 15 states and localities on paid sick days campaigns for 2009.
Action: We want to hear from you. Why are paid sick days important to you?
>>Share your story The Bush Administration is pushing through a wide range of controversial last minute regulations. Last week, the Department of Labor released regulations on the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) that have both positive and negative consequences for working families. We are thrilled to report that the new regulations expand FMLA access for military families, providing them with a clear path to access the leave they need to care for wounded service members and to take care of their families while a service member is deployed.
However, at the same time, these regulations will make it more difficult for workers to take the leave they need. They jeopardize workers’ medical privacy, give employees less time to give notice of leave, make it easier for employers to delay or deny leave, and make it more difficult for workers to use their paid leave while on FMLA leave. Over the last 15 years, workers have used the FMLA more than 100 million times to take the leave they needed without putting their jobs at risk. This law is working well. We should be looking for ways to expand the FMLA, not putting FMLA rights at risk.
Action: The new FMLA regulations move our country in the wrong direction. Join us in urging our new leaders to undo the damage caused by these harmful regulations, as well as to expand the FMLA.
>>Urge Congress to restore and expand the FMLA Of Supreme Importance | Protecting Employees from Pregnancy Discrimination: AT&T v. Hulteen On December 10th, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in a case that examines whether an employer violates the Pregnancy Discrimination Act by calculating present-day retirement benefits based on discriminatory tenure practices of the past. The case involves several women now retiring from AT&T who are receiving lower pensions because their benefits are based on tenure calculations that exclude time on pregnancy leave. Under an old AT&T policy in place prior to the passage of the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, employees received credit towards length of service for purposes of retirement for all time spent on leave for a temporary disability, except when that leave was due to pregnancy. This type of policy became illegal when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act became law in 1978.
Although AT&T subsequently changed its policy to treat pregnancy leave like other forms of temporary disability leave, it continued to calculate retirement benefits based on the old policy — by not crediting time spent on pregnancy leave for those women who took pregnancy leave when the policy was still on the books. As a result, female retirees who took pregnancy leave under the old policy face current discrimination in the calculation of their retirement benefits.
Pregnancy discrimination complaints have jumped 65% in the last 15 years. It is particularly important for the Supreme Court to send a strong message to employers that unfair treatment of pregnant women will not be tolerated, wherever and whenever it occurs.
Action: Learn more about this important pregnancy discrimination case and how AT&T v. Hulteen affects workers.

The National Priorities Partnership is a group of 28 leading organizations that have come together to establish national priorities and goals to improve our health care system — including setting priorities in the areas of payment, public reporting, quality improvement, and consumer engagement. The National Priorities Partnership has offered a unique opportunity to work with a broad range of health care organizations on common goals for fixing our broken health care system, and we led the committee focusing on patient and family engagement.
On November 17, the National Partnership joined all partners to publicly announce the key priorities. We are now spearheading an effort to bring together consumers, as well as employers and health plans, to achieve consensus on action steps to make these priorities a reality and improve health care for all individuals and families.

>>Visit the National Priorities Partnership website REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH | Looking Beyond the Election The National Partnership has been working closely with allies in Congress and the health care and women’s rights communities to prepare for the new Administration and the new Congress. We expect much more support for reproductive rights in the years ahead.
We are working to ensure that the anti-choice policies of the past eight years are reversed, reproductive health care is addressed appropriately in health care reform, and our nation makes preventing unintended pregnancy much more of a priority.
We’re also remaining vigilant as the Bush Administration continues to release "midnight" regulations to enact controversial last-minute policy changes that the next administration will be forced to address. The Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) could finalize proposed provider "conscience" regulations at any moment that threaten to deprive women of the right to reproductive health services and information We are ready to respond and will keep you updated on the status.

>>Share your story .. WORK/FAMILY | FMLA Regulations The Bush Administration is pushing through a wide range of controversial last minute regulations.

Action: Stay tuned for up to date information on women’s reproductive health.

Note: It isn't just wolves, but many other animals on the near extinct list are in those same wild life Federal Lands, What I don't understand is, how can a governor get away with that. It means the lands are not his/or hers to decide. We the People own the Federal Lands, so keep that in mind. No one elite or other owns those lands and it is posted because it has many of the wild near destiction and it must be stopped immediately. The people in Alaska do not want this at all! they care a lot about their wild life. BTW the Moose is nearing that same inextinction, and many others. That is why it is called a Wild Life Federal Reserve, so there are laws about this on the books. national Geographic Would love to know about this one. Palin's Aerial Wolf Killi Frenzy Has Begun Monday, November 24, 2008 8:50 AM From: "Rodger Schlickeisen, Defenders of Wildlife" <defenders@...>To: quechick007@... Help Stop Palin’s Slaughter:
Become a Wildlife Guardian Already, a record 19 wolves have been slaughtered in November -- all part of Gov. Sarah Palin’s wolf-killing program.
Please help us stop this brutal practice and prevent programs like it from spreading to areas like Greater Yellowstone with your monthly contribution of...
$5 per month $8 per month $19 per month -- for the number of wolves already killed this season Another amount per month Dear Theresa, I have some bad news for you: Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s aerial killing frenzy has begun.
Already, the slaughter has claimed the lives of 19 wolves -- more than in any November in the last 5 years. But there is something you can do to help.
Please help us save wolves’ lives by becoming a Wildlife Guardian with your small monthly donation. Your dependable support will be critical to our success in defeating Palin’s terrible program.
Gov. Sarah Palin proudly champions this deadly wolf killing program as “one of those last-resort things.” But Alaska’s aerial killing program has claimed the lives of more than 800 wolves -- including 14 helpless pups ruthlessly killed earlier this year -- and with 19 more wolves killed already, this season could see a record slaughter of hundreds more.
That’s why your monthly Wildlife Guardian contribution of $5, $8, $19 (number of wolves already killed this season) or another amount is so critical right now. You can help stop Alaska’s aerial wolf-killing program -- and prevent programs like it from spreading to places like Greater Yellowstone.
As a Wildlife Guardian, your ongoing monthly donation -- just pennies per day -- will provide a new and reliable source of funds to wage this campaign on behalf of wolves in the critical months ahead.
With the support of concerned people like you, we’ve been able to stop Governor Palin’s bloody bounty for the severed paws of slaughtered wolves; stop Palin’s stealth campaign to stifle the voice of Alaska’s citizens on the issue; and through our sister organization Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund, people like you helped prevent Gov. Palin from being a heart-beat away from the presidency.
This fight will be long and hard. But with your monthly contribution supporting our on-the-ground efforts, battle in the courts and fight in Congress, I know we can win.
For the Wild Ones, Rodger Schlickeisen
President Defenders of Wildlife P.S. You can give a little each month through our secure website to help stop the Palin wolf slaughter. You can also become a Wildlife Guardian for wolves and other wildlife by calling 1-877-682-9401.
