An America we can be proud of, Monday, December 15, 2008 5:00 PM
From: "Anthony D. Romero, ACLU" <Executive_Director@...>To: quechick007@...
Act now and double the impact of your support for the ACLU.

Dear ACLU Supporter,
As we set out to renew American freedom, you can count on the ACLU to think big and act boldly. That’s what it’s going to take if we want to create an America we can once again be proud of.
I’m talking about an America that embraces freedom, rejects torture, respects privacy and advances justice and equality here at home and across the globe.
After one of the darkest periods in the history of our nation, we have our work cut out for us. But, the opportunity for real, positive change is at hand -- and, with your help, we’re going to make it happen. Recognizing this unique opportunity, a generous donor has agreed to match all gifts dollar-for-dollar up to $200,000.
Act now and double the impact of your support for the ACLU.
All through 2009, the ACLU will be at the center of the effort to create an America we can be proud of. Together, we will:
Encourage Barack Obama to act on Day One to fulfill his commitment to close Guantánamo Bay, ban torture, and shut down unjust and un-American military commissions.
Keep pursuing lawsuits that challenge the unconstitutional and dramatic expansion of the warrantless eavesdropping program that Congress and the Bush administration pushed through earlier this year.
Challenge the Patriot Act by continuing our successful lawsuits and our work in Washington to influence the debate as Congress takes up the renewal of parts of the Act.
Fight in the courts to overturn California’s unconstitutional Proposition 8 -- and work across the country, insisting that no person should be denied their rights because of who they are or who they love.
And, continue defending reproductive freedom and the separation of church and state in dozens of vitally important state and local cases.
As we set out to restore an America we can be proud of, we’re counting on you to act. By donating today, your contribution will be matched dollar-for-dollar.
Make a matching gift donation now and double the impact of your support for the ACLU.
Let’s make the weeks and months ahead a period of real progress -- strengthening the cause of freedom here at home and renewing respect for America all across the globe.
Thanks for all that you are doing,

Anthony D. Romero
Executive Director
ACLU

P.S. In these tough economic times, each of us has difficult choices to make about where to invest our financial resources. You can count on this: The ACLU will use every dollar you donate to effectively and efficiently work to protect and expand our fundamental freedoms.

Send her(Carol Browner our plan) Monday, December 15, 2008 5:20 PM
From: "Phil Angelides, The Apollo Alliance" <info@...>To: "Theresa J Steed" <Quechick007@...>

Make sure President-elect Obama's new Energy Chief knows we are counting on her to steer us toward
a clean energy future.
We've got the roadmap.
Tell Carol Browner to support the Apollo Recovery Act.

Dear Theresa J,
Today, President-elect Obama named Carol Browner as our nation's first Energy Chief.
As a long-time advocate for responsible environmental and energy policy, Browner is well respected for her work building public-private partnerships. She has also spoken publicly about the need for green jobs as a vital part of energy independence.
Decisions Browner makes in the coming weeks could affect our energy policy for generations to come. Can we get off oil once and for all? Will communities get the green jobs they need?
We've got to make sure Browner knows thousands of people are counting on her to prevail over Big Oil's powerful lobby. So in the coming days, we'll flood her office with a chorus of supportive voices pushing for clean energy and good jobs.
Send a welcome note to America's first Energy Chief – tell her to make the Apollo Economic Recovery Act her first priority
At this time in our nation's history, the job of Energy Chief couldn't be more important. Though President-elect Obama's ideas for energy reform echo the Apollo Alliance's plan, Browner will need our massive support to negotiate the right path for America's future – one that will create five million new jobs and end our dependence on oil.
Our first test is coming soon: can we mobilize the support she needs to get Congress to use the upcoming economic recovery package to make a down payment on that future?
Your voice could mean the difference between 'Drill, Baby, Drill' and 'Jobs, Baby, Jobs.'
Carol Browner has a strong track record of working with businesses and reaching across the aisle, but she's already facing resistance from Big Oil. Their lobbyists and corporate CEOs have gotten their way for too long. That's got to end, and we can help her stay strong.
Visible grassroots pressure will be critical to helping Browner carry out President-elect Obama's vision. That's especially true in this tight economy, where new investments in clean energy technologies could fall by the wayside if we don't make our support loud and clear.
Make sure our new Energy Chief knows you support the Apollo Economic Recovery Act for clean energy and good jobs.
The commitment of thousands of Americans can help get this country back on track. Thanks for your voice and your support.

Sincerely,

Phil Angelides
Chairman

The 4 ThingsMonday, December 15, 2008 5:38 PM
From: "Greg Haegele, Sierra Club" <membership.services@...>To: quechick007@...

Dear Theresa,
Four things.
President-elect Obama has big plans to work with Congress to repower, refuel and rebuild America.
But first, there are four decisions the President-elect can make on day one of his administration, independently of Congress, that will enable us to start 2009 with a 'clean slate' of energy policies. These policies will move us beyond the Bush Administration to have an immediate impact on cutting global warming pollution and spurring a clean energy economy.
Urge President-elect Obama to Enact the Clean Slate Energy Agenda.

We’re calling these four The Clean Slate Energy Agenda and we need your help to make these four issues a priority for President-Elect Obama.
Can you contact President-elect Obama today and ask him to adopt the Clean Slate Energy Agenda?
President-elect Obama has asked all of us to engage in governing this country and now is our opportunity to answer his call. Right now, his team is hard at work drafting a plan to invest in clean energy and slash global warming pollution -- likely to be rolled out as soon as February.
Obama can jumpstart a clean energy economy and start reducing global warming pollution immediately by doing the following:
He can end the rush to build new coal plants by directing his EPA to require all new power plants to limit their global warming emissions.
He can direct his EPA to approve plans by 18 states to require clean cars.
He can direct his EPA to end mountaintop removal mining by stopping coal companies from dumping rock and waste into valleys and streams.
He can restore America’s international leadership in the fight to end global warming by publicly committing the US to cut its CO2 emissions at least 35% by 2020.
Click on the link below to contact President-elect Obama today and ask him to adopt the Clean Slate Energy Agenda.
These are issues we have all been working hard on for years, but have been repeatedly blocked by the Bush Administration.
And the coal industry is trying to block progress as well.
They are rushing to get states to approve construction on more than 100 proposed coal-fired power plants before Obama implements a clean energy agenda.  These plants would add more than 488 million tons of carbon dioxide annually, the equivalent of adding nearly 100 million cars to the US highways, and eliminate any meaningful market share for clean energy investment.
President-elect Obama can make our clean energy future a reality, by making these executive decisions in one day with the stroke of a pen. Please, tell President-elect Obama to make these four requests a priority.
Thanks for all that you do to protect the environment.

Director of Conservation

This is a very important step. We Grass Roots depend on Net Neutrality. Many of the FCC Commisioners are for this.
We are asking a big favor of the President-Elect Obama, when he becomes our President. We already have had a hearing
of the FCC about Net Neutrality.  However there was action taken when huge internet.com tried to stifle the freedom on
the Internent. Some of them were even censuring our emails. That is a no-no.l This is not acceptable. We are looking forward
to when our Net Neutrality will come true by an act of Congress. Que*****

President Elect Obama:  Please Don't Back Down on Net NeutralityMonday, December 15, 2008 3:01 PM
From: "Josh Silver, FreePress.net" <list@...>To: quechick007@...

Dear Theresa J.,

Ask Obama: "Protect Net Neutrality"
Join the Call to Action

This morning, a Wall Street Journal article stirred up false rumors that Internet giant Google and President-elect Obama himself are backing off their support of Net Neutrality.
Fortunately, neither is true, and the article was widely discredited soon after the paper hit the streets. But in the perverse world of Washington politics, some believe that if Google abandons Net Neutrality, we will never see it passed into law.
Net Neutrality is about more than Google. Now is the time to show Obama and our elected officials that millions of people support Net Neutrality ... and that we are willing to fight for it.
Tell Obama: We Need Net Neutrality Now
Obama has promised to "take a backseat to no one" in his commitment to Net Neutrality. Within a few days, the president-elect will name a new Federal Communications Commission chair, along with other key media policy officials, who will have a huge impact on the future of the Internet.
It's not up to AT&T and Comcast -- or Google -- whether we have Net Neutrality. It's up to us, the public, and we're not giving up the fight for a free and open Internet. Now is the right time to remind our leaders that Net Neutrality is a top priority.
Join our call to action, and we'll make sure your voice is heard by key decision-makers in Washington.
Join our Call to Action and Support Net Neutrality
Contrary to the claims of the Wall Street Journal that Net Neutrality forces are receding, we are actually closer now than ever before to victory. We have arrived at the moment when Net Neutrality has its greatest appeal, clearest need, and best chance of becoming law.
Show your commitment to Net Neutrality: Add your name, tell your friends, and drive Net Neutrality across the finish line.
Signed,

Working Families e-Activist Network, AFL-CIO
P.S. Order by Dec. 17 to receive your merchandise by Dec. 24. Not sure what to buy? Here are some favorites from the AFL-CIO NOW BLOG and web team.

Mike Hall’s pick: If you’re like most of us this holiday season, thrifty will trump extravagant during your shopping adventures. But for under $25, I came up with a fun and somewhat practical six-piece, activist, pro-union gift set. Or, if you’re into quantity, you can wrap each one individually.
For just a buck each, you get the now classic “Kickin’ Ass for the Working Class” button along with a “Fight Ignorance, Not Immigrants” button and the Mother Jones “Sit down and read. Educate yourself for the coming conflict” bookmark.

Next up is a set of four bicep-flexing Rosie the Riveter coasters, and with winter here, a practical AFL-CIO ice scraper—both for only $5 each. The big ticket item in our The Union Shop OnlineTM gift box is a coffee mug emblazoned with words to live by: “Got a Boss? Get a Union!”
It all adds up to just $23.
Seth Michaels’ selection: Anybody who’s jockeyed a cash register, an espresso machine or a mop bucket in recent years--and I’ve done all three--knows what the U.S. economy has really felt like over the past decade for millions of workers. Writer Barbara Ehrenreich captures it well in Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America. In this compelling and humane book, Ehrenreich takes a trip behind the scenes of America’s chain stores and hotels to highlight the day-to-day struggles of low-wage workers.

From Danielle Hatchett: I have never been one to choose plain, understated holiday cards. Christmas is my favorite time of the year, and I like to share that cheer with family and friends. The Circle Dance holiday cards are artistic, bold, colorful and full of movement. The message inside, “Together we will make a better world,” also is very appropriate in these tough times we’re facing.
Tula Connell's take: It’s never too early to start educating a new generation about the role of unions. Even if the gift is tongue in cheek, like a fun bib for the wee one identifying its wearer as a member of The International Babyhood of Eaters, Soilers and Snugglers. For the slightly older set, there’s a fine progressive preschooler counterpoint to Animal Farm: Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that Type, by Doreen Cronin. I won’t give away the ending, but it’s udderly amazing. (There’s also a DVD version.) The older tykes also can don a T-shirt that promotes a tiny-tot version of the evergreen union motto: "An Owie to One Is an Owie to All." And for the truly budget-conscious, you can’t go wrong with the Workers Coloring Book, by Marilyn Anderson, for $1.50. After the holidays, these gifts would make a great set for baby showers--where you just might remind some of the adults about the role of workers and their unions in building this nation.
Our anonymous blogger says: Going Down Jericho Road, by Mike Honey, is finely crafted history, artfully written prose and a great story. Those would be reasons enough to read it. But Going Down Jericho Road is also more than that. It’s a beautiful moral drama of beaten-down workers who rise up against all the odds, organize, suffer great loss and ultimately win. It’s also a reminder (just in case we need one) of the raw and magnificent heroism in the union movement. Available in hardback and paperback.

One from Donna Jablonski: This cardigan is great. It’s dressy enough to wear for work, even with a skirt, but also nice with jeans. Can’t beat it. (It also comes in white.)
James Parks’ pick: “I Am A Man” poster/Dreams of My Father and The Audacity of Hope--what a difference 40 years make. My favorites both have to do with the struggles of people of color to have a better life. One is the “I Am A Man” poster, which depicts African American sanitation workers marching in Memphis in 1968 for a union and basic human respect. The other is a two-book set, Dreams of My Father and The Audacity of Hope, by President-elect Barack Obama, which gives us insight into the forces and beliefs that shaped his path in life. The fact that he will be president on Jan. 20 also is testament to the strength, courage and faith in the cause of justice that animates the entire progressive movement.
