Quote of the Week:  “If you want to build a ship, don't herd people together to collect wood, and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.” -- Antoine-Marie-Roger de Saint-Exupery

Subject: Admissions Updates March 2009

Greetings from Rochester, NY!

I wanted to just remind you all that I am traveling a lot right now. I am doing my best to check voicemail and email as promptly as possible. If you need to speak with someone immediately, you may call our volunteer line: 1-800-706-9602. Otherwise, just be patient and I will get back to you as soon as a I can! :)

Spend A Summer Day

The dates for Spend A Summer Day (SASD) are now established and registration is open. All of our campuses have some form of SASD and you can find all of the dates and registration information at http://admissions.psu.edu/sasd/dates.cfm. For those of you not familiar with SASD, it's an open house Penn State hosts at the end of the summer. It is our largest recruitment effort and at UP, 12,000 students and families come throughout a day period. Academic colleges open their doors for information sessions, students give campus tours and answer questions on panels, admissions and financial aid sessions are held as well. It's an all day event and worth telling students about. Here are the dates for UP:

  • Monday, July 27 - 9:15 a.m.
  • Wednesday, July 29- 9:15 a.m.
  • Friday, July 31 - 9:15 a.m.
  • Monday, August 3 - 9:15 a.m.
  • Wednesday, August 5 - 9:15 a.m.
  • Friday, August 7 - 9:15 a.m.

Numbers

We have had 53,416 applications so far, which is 2,370 (5%) more than last year at this time. We have extended 39,081 offers of admission, which is 753 (2%) more than last year at this time. There have been 7,660 students who have paid and accepted their offers to become Penn Staters! This is 6 fewer than this time last year, but not much of a change. To take a page out of Al Roker's book, here's what's happening in your neck of the woods:

There have been 183 applications (up 24%), 132 offers of admission (up 28%) and 9 (down 40%) students have accepted their offers.

Thank you for all that you do!

For the Glory,

Melanie Puebla
