WHO? This group is open to novice and experienced musicians who have a shared interest in traditional and contemporary folk music with others.
The group is not intended to be a forum for open-mic or jam sessions, it is an opportunity for folk musicians and singers located throughout the Peidmont region of North Carolina to meet in an informal setting and to participate in unscripted drop-in, sing-along sessions.
WHEN? As of March 3rd (2009), the group will meet on Tuesday evenings, at 7 p.m. and stop playing a few minutes before 9 p.m. to accomodate Books A Million's new store hours (they close at 9 p.m.)
WHERE? Books A Million is located on Falls of the Neuse Road, just south of Highway 540. The address is: 7221 Sandy Forks Rd, Raleigh, NC 27615
WHAT? The group encourages singers and musicians to bring or utilize the Rise Up Singing music book, or bring copies of a song so that everyone in the group may participate. The Rise Up Singing music book is usually available at Borders, or may be ordered for approximately $20. (There is now a large print edition of Rise Up Singing available.)
History of the Group
The Tuesday evening Folk Music Sing-along sessions started at Hoffman's Stringed Instruments in the 1980's, in Raleigh, NC. After Hoffman's Stringed Instruments closed their doors in 1997, a small group of musicians continued the Tuesday evening tradition at the Borders Books Cafe, in Cary, NC. The group began to meet in the North Raleigh Borders Café in November of 1998
In February of 2007, The group moved to Stone Wolfe Cafe, later the group moved to Books A Million, on Sandy Forks Road (and Falls of the Neuse Road)in North Raleigh.
