Hi folks- I'm selling my G4 formal dressage demo.  It's the medium (17") seat size, has been ridden in maybe 5 or 6 times, it's black lambtan with poron foam in the seat, with black stormy flaps.  It has the G4 rigging with 3 billets and safety e-bar breakaway stirrup bars.  I also have a navy blue cordura/fleece skito pad that goes with it.

I have decided to sell this one and replace it with a demo with the largest seat size.  The saddle is in like-new condition.  I would be happy to send it out on demo for a try-before-you-buy.

If anyone is interested, please e-mail me privately and I will send pictures etc...  you can see a picture of an identical saddle here http://www.freedomtreeless.com/G4Dressage.html  that's not a picture of my actual demo, but it is the exact same- for pics of the actual demo saddle, e-mail me.  New total cost for this package (saddle + pad) is almost $1,400.  I will take $1,200 for it.

You're right Wenona.  When I originally had this done I planned to have a web loop attaching the ring to the rear billet as well.  For some reason the man that did the sewing for me didn't do it that way but I took the saddle to try as is.  I don't ride much in that saddle and it's worked fine and been stable so I have left it that way.  It seems like anyone else making such a modification, especially if they are attaching smaller rings/Ds could do so to both billets.  Keep in mind my intent was to switch to a western type rigging.

Thanks for the link. It looks to me that the new girth attachment is only connected to one billet so I would think that it would not have the same pressure distribution it was designed with.

I'm sure someone could do similar but also reattaching the bottom of the billet.
I wanted a switch to western rigging on my FW.

wears it on rides, so he should train in it too. The saddle slips even with the
breast collar and then it gets very tight. I just wish those billets were angled
a bit more. I don't use a crupper. The saddle never slips forward...even on very
steep hills.

Hi Kate,

I've recently been on the hunt for a treeless dressage saddle as well, and I did
try a Fhoenix Vogue Dressage, which is the newest HM treeless saddle. The
leather is nice and it is a well-made saddle but it didn't work for me. I am in
Canada, and even though it was above freezing and I brought the saddle with me
to the barn, the saddle was HARD when I got on...much harder than the seat of my
treed dressage saddle. It did soften within about 10 minutes, but I wouldn't
want to leave it at the barn during the winter months. My pony seemed to like it
okay. He definitely moved better than he does in his treed saddle, but not as
well as in the Sensation G4 dressage. I liked the girthing set-up because it
allowed me to make sure the saddle was well off his shoulders. When I rode in
the saddle I felt perched and too far off his back, I actually felt less
connected to him than I do in my treed saddle, and defintely was not able to
feel his back as well as I can in my Sensation dressage. It was also really
bouncy. I always ride a sitting trot, and I found it really hard to find my
seat. The dealer told me they do break in somewhat with use, but I could tell it
wasn't the saddle for me.

Saddle preference is a very individual thing, so I think you should try as many
saddles as you can. My objective was to find a saddle that gave me as close a
feel to bareback as I could get, and still have a saddle capable of showing
in...and of course a saddle that allows my pony to move out as well as he does
bareback. I believe I have found that in the Sensation G4 dressage, but it did
take some fiddling to get the seat right for me. One of the benefits of the
Sensations is that they are very customizable. Now that I know what I need, I
have ordered myself a custom G4 with a shorter flap and a smaller seat.

Abby recommended that I take a look at this saddle, given what I'm looking for and my feedback on the BF and what didn't work. I've not yet seen one in person, or sat on one, which is my first step. If you can get back to me with more info, and possibly pictures, then maybe we can see if there's a way for me to sit in it.

One major hesitation is the memory foam seat, as I live in an area that is cold in the winter with no way to warm up the saddle prior to riding, as well as buying a saddle I've not been able to demo - the treeless journey is new to me, and I only have so many dollars to commit, so I'm being very careful with where they go and my ability to say no if each saddle isn't the right option.

If anyone has current/more feedback on HM saddles, and the seat, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks much!

I put it on the horse to warm it up and put  the blanket over it while I pick feet, brush stretch etc.... Or keep it in the car .  It warms up pretty quick once you're on it too.  It gets fairly cold here in VA and I ve never had an issue.

I don't see the pommel being a big deal if it's soft, although it does need to come down in size...  However that seat is too deep and restrictive, you have to have a more open seat, maybe for stadium it ll work but in x country, you can't ride a drop w that big ole cantle, even if it's a soft cantle it's still going to interfere.... Good start though

Looks like a nice well-made saddle, but there's no way you'd be jumping much of anything with that pommel! The saddle will not appeal to people who are serious about jumping. At least with the Sensation jumping saddle they've greatly reduced the pommel.

Hi Rachel,
It gets cold in the Florida Panhandle during the winter months, and frequently freezes.  I have a memory foam "booster seat" in my truck, and when it's cold here, that thing is painfully cold and hard.

It's almost worse to bear because usually the weather cycles - two weeks of warmer rainy humid sinus-killing weather, followed by two weeks of dry cold.
My water troughs are cast-iron bathtubs, and many mornings (especially in FEBRUARY) we have to break the ice.

And my husband is Mr Frugal, so our house can be pretty cool inside, too!  I wear all of my clothes at once when it's cold!

High of 62 today, but it will be cooler next week, according to the weather guessers.

Looks like a nice well-made saddle, but there's no way you'd be jumping much of
anything with that pommel! The saddle will not appeal to people who are serious
about jumping. At least with the Sensation jumping saddle they've greatly
reduced the pommel.

Hi Janya -
thanks for letting me know you have a saddle available. Are there pictures on
the group site, and if so, under what title, or do you have pix elsewhere or
that you can send? What model/seat size is it? Is this one of the HM saddles
listed on BAEN? And most importantly, where are you in case I'd like to come
see it?

Abby recommended that I take a look at this saddle, given what I'm looking for
and my feedback on the BF and what didn't work. I've not yet seen one in person,
or sat on one, which is my first step. If you can get back to me with more
info, and possibly pictures, then maybe we can see if there's a way for me to
sit in it.

One major hesitation is the memory foam seat, as I live in an area that is cold
in the winter with no way to warm up the saddle prior to riding, as well as
buying a saddle I've not been able to demo - the treeless journey is new to me,
and I only have so many dollars to commit, so I'm being very careful with where
they go and my ability to say no if each saddle isn't the right option.

If anyone has current/more feedback on HM saddles, and the seat, I'd love to
hear it.

Thanks much!
Kate

Hi Karen,
I have a few questions about the pad. I know they are filled with cork, but what is the covering like? Also, are the cork granules really fine like sand, or bigger like the pieces used in bean bag toys? I have always been curious about these pads, but I really love the natural sheepskin mattes pad (and so does my horse!), but you never know...

Hmm, I see that in that photo that I had not yet cut off the billets.  Right after I had the modification done I left them on for a bit until I was sure that it was going to work okay.  I then cut off both billets, leaving a long enough stub on each that the billets could be reattached in the future if necessary.

It doesn't take much of an imbalance to cause problems. When I was looking at my
new gelding he was moving fine the first time I went to try him. 2 weeks later,
he was a little off on the front. He had just been shod. I looked at his feet
and there was an imbalance in his heels. I got off and showed it to the owner
and they had another farrier fix it. He was fine after being balanced. I had him
vetted and he was sound. I had his shoes pulled and they were too small, which I
knew. He has been barefoot for almost a year and he moves great in his treeless
saddle. He also had some signs of an ill fitting treed saddle. He had white hair
on both sides of his withers, which is now gone.

All of this can certainly affect the horse's movement and body.

He wears it on rides, so he should train in it too. The saddle slips even with the breast collar and then it gets very tight. I just wish those billets were angled a bit more. I don't use a crupper. The saddle never slips forward...even on very steep hills.

the album is called. If you can't find it let me know and I can email you a
pic. I'm sure someone could do similar but also reattaching the bottom of the
billet. I wanted a switch to western rigging on my FW.

Again, the side dominance impacts how the front hooves are loaded and that determines their shape and size. It is the farrier and trimmers responsibility to recognize this and trim accordingly. Instead I often see that the flatter hoof isn't taken short enough in the toe and the more upright growing hoof is left too high in the heels - check out Pete Ramey's latest DVD and you will see exactly how this tends to lead to underrun dominant hooves with too much toe and non-dominant hooves that are too high in the heels - that can really screw  up the shoulders (and saddle fit ) then........ :-)

my husband is a farrier and i have to agree with Karen.  it's amazing how many people out there don't know if their horse's feet are actually balanced to the horse, to each other, and each in their own right.  add the mentality that most of us grew up with ... throw on a saddle without thinking ... and you have 2 major issues that easily fixable but often the last to be thought of.

April, I agree with a whole lot of this, except that I am seeing so
many unbalanced trim and shod horses, in that the feet are causing the
problems up higher in the body, not the other way around. It is
amazing how many unbalanced feet i see, that straighten out with just
a sensible, balanced trim...and the horses then move much better....

First thing i look at is the feet....and saddle fit....those two
things along fix a lot of problems....

Yes, totally this happens a lot,  but again it does not explain the cases where we see unmatched front hooves in very young horses or horse who have never been shod or ridden, and this was the point of the discussion - unmatched front hooves and its root causes  :-) In the majority of cases, unmatched front hooves are caused by side dominance in the horse. This is then also often exacerbated by bad trimming and shoeing (not addressing the longer toe correctly in the flatter hoof and typically leaving the heels too high on the more upright growing hoof) and that in turn often causes issues in the body higher up.

Sure that can be an issue, but not in pretty much all horses, of all ages, breeds and various management styles (stalled or out 24/7)! Logic tells me that it is rather unlikely that this many horses with front hoof imbalances have withers or rib issues, particularly not 4 week old foals that will already show this trend in their front hooves or horses who have never sustained a bad trauma, or illness that may account for the problems or have never been ridden .....

What you are describing is typically a symptom that generally comes from side dominance that causes the horse to use him/herself in a predictable pattern, which can vary depending on the horse's conformation. If it is not due to side dominance issues, than the problem is often trauma or possibly disease (i.e. EPSM, EPM) related. Horses may also throw you onto the opposite diagonal because one side is simply weaker and the muscles are not strong enough to sustain this movement for an extended period of time, kinda like a human trying to write with their non-dominant hand. I mean, how long would you last, right?!!

For example, humans tend to have a dropped and leading dominant shoulder. This is directly related to side dominance because the dominant side wants to lead all the time (try it - when going through a  narrow opening your body will tell most likely you it wants to lead through it with its dominant side - you won't even think about it, you'll just do what comes "natural" because this is what you are used to doing). At the same time we tend to shift weight at the waist over to the dominant side to compensate for any weight we might be carrying on the non-dominant side. That unnaturally shortens the upper body at the waist on the dominant side and will make the dominant shoulder lower than the non-dominant shoulder. The problem is not really in the dropped shoulder, the root problem is in fact in the shortened , dominant waist!

Horse are no different in this respect. They prefer to use the lead in the canter that is initiated by the dominant hind leg, which is diagonal from the front lead leg. Most horses are right side dominant, hence they tend to prefer the left lead canter. This also means they tend to use the dominant shoulder more, therefore typically having more muscle development on top of the dominant shoulder which often makes saddle fitting so challenging and the reason so many arrive at treeless saddles, because they are more forgiving to such imbalances. The more the dominant shoulder is developed, the more uneven the horse's front hooves typically are as well. It is caused by side dominance and its predictable use of the body and not just by "shoulder issues".

You need to look at the true root causes of body imbalances/problems instead of just addressing the symptoms. Only then will you be able to reduce the possibility of recurrence or them developing in the first place and that includes bodywork as well as correct use/development/exercise of the body. This essentially means strengthening the body's weaker side, to make both sides more equally strong. Otherwise you'll only be managing the problem for the long term. :-)

Moving and posting with the horse-like rolling on a wave.
Front feet not the same?-not balanced?-that comes from issues higher up-withers-ribs not being able to move and flex-muscles in spasm-locking the horse 'down' and one leg over compensates-gives you the high low syndrome. Needs bodywork.
Horses that throw you to one diagonal-same thing-uncomfortable for them to work the other diagonal-they are not just being lazy.
So if you are treeless and one side of the horse gives to leg pressure but the other side does not-the ribs are locked in spasm.
Does your horse trot with the tail to one side? This is not a good sign either-and it is not just an ''arab thing'' so all you ''leftie's'' that just mount from the left-start mounting and dismounting from the right side as well-work both sides of your horse-and do your horse yoga's.http://www.youtube.com/user/HolisticHorseWorks if your horse cannot easily do all these moves then professional bodywork is needed in the equation of going treeless-which is just part of the ''fix''.
