All Nuvi's other than the 350 display breadcrumb trails for mobile APRS
stations. ONLY the Nuvi 350 does it "right" as we APRS users would
consider it. The wiki does give you the full details.

When I added the nuvi 12xx and 13xx/14xx to the wiki, I specified that they did not support updating waypoints. This is not completely true. The new FMI protocol does support waypoint creation, but the T2 software with that support is still in beta (Scott: correct me if I'm wrong).

You don't use connected mode packet to send commands to the T2, you use
APRS messages.

It's still in beta. The trouble with the new FMI 2.5 firmware is that
it doesn't automatically update the map, and it doesn't show waypoint
names unless you select a station. I haven't had any luck so far
getting anyone to change that.

FMI 2.5 *does* allow automatic waypoint expiration, though, which is
pretty cool.

I even added pretty colours to the wiki table so it's easier to
identify which units are good...

Green is proper support, yellow is partial support, and red is no support...

Not much green in the table, so people should get the concept that the
Nuvi 350 is the beast to use.

Hi Craig,

What address are you sending messages to? other callsigns or internet

Do you have a digipeater in the area set up to accept messages?

I did pull my unit and update it.  The build number was 55xxx.  But there doesn't appear to be any way to determine what changes were made.  It did not fix any of my messaging problems.

I was trying to send to another station I had setup for testing in the same
room.
The Tracker2 is is set for KI6WLP-2 and I was trying to send to a test
stations KI6WLP-1 and KI6WLP-3

The second test staion is a Yaesu VX-8R hooked to a another brand Tracker. I
know the second Tracker works because it shows up on aprs.fi

KI6WLP-1 is the ID assigned to another brand of tracker which is hooked to
a laptop running APRSIS32, I also had the APRSIS32 software set for KI6WLP-3.

I do see other stations showing up on the Nuvi 350 and they're in the
"Favorites" list.
I tried send using the following:

-KI6WLP-1 TEST

and also

-KI6WLP-3 TEST

Also when the APRSIS32 software on the laptop is in the RF mode is can see other
APRS station through the VX-8R, Tracker, and to the laptop. I think maybe once I
was able to send from the laptop using RF mode to the Tracker2 and Nuvi 350.

I thought I can send directly to another APRS station without going through a
digipeater, am I mistaken?
If they're in the same room for testing, could that be causing a problem?

You're good... you should be on 144.390 simplex, direct communication
is not a problem.

> If they're in the same room for testing, could that be causing a problem?

It shouldn't be a problem... are you decoding the other stations
reliably on each station? If you aren't able to decode positions
reliably, then I'd look at modulation levels... If you don't get
reliable positions, you won't get reliable messaging.

When the tracker tries to send do you hear the audio on the other
radio? In the same room with a 10/25 watt radio you may be overloading
the receive on the other radio. Make sure that you're on low power, and
space the mobile radio's antenna further away, or put it on a dummy load.

Can someone confirm that the "jumper" referred to in the profile switching
section of the configuration screen is actually pin 6 on the DB9 of the Alinco
DR135T rear connector once the T2-135 is installed.
Is it appropriate to pull pin 6 to ground as part of the profile selection
setup?
It appears to be so from the instruction manual of other tracker models, but the
T2-135 manual is a little slim on this point.
Don't want to let the smoke out! Thanks

I have no reason to doubt it. The other pins are as stated in the manual.

The rearpanel connector is wired so that it may be connected to a PC using a

standard straightthrough serial cable. A nullmodem adapter is needed to

connect a GPS receiver having a typical serial cable. The pinout of the dsub

connector is as follows:

2: Data out

3: Data in

5: Ground

6: Profile select

8: 1wire data bus

Interesting!

I have a couple of 350 and I don't consider the way it handles Mobile stations
the ideal by a long shot!!!!! I am constantly bombarded with waypoints full all
the time because it adds a extra number to the end of the SSID each time it is
heard so to me the bread crumb trail seems to be a better way to go and waypoint
expiration sure would help eliminate running out of waypoints.

So tell me again how the 350 handles it properly? Because I don't see it that
way.

My Nuvi 350 being fed by a T2-135 embedded in an Alinco DR-135 has a
single waypoint for each callsign-SSID. When/if a position packet is
heard, the waypoint simply moves to the new location with no duplication
at all. As I understand it, this is the only Nuvi to behave this way.
All of the other models do what you describe.

I don't have my firmware version handy here (it's in the mobile), but
are you sure you're running the latest firmware? And (please don't take
offense) are you sure they're 350s?

My Nuvi 350 being fed by a T2-135 embedded in an Alinco DR-135 has a
single waypoint for each callsign-SSID. When/if a position packet is
heard, the waypoint simply moves to the new location with no duplication
at all. As I understand it, this is the only Nuvi to behave this way.
All of the other models do what you describe.

I don't have my firmware version handy here (it's in the mobile), but
are you sure you're running the latest firmware? And (please don't take
offense) are you sure they're 350s?

If you have 50 stations come to the 350 then you use up 50 waypoints. But if those same 50 stations are moving and generate 10 position each, then you use up 500 waypoints. Clearly the first is best and that is where the 350 comes in. It does the first and is currently the best.

Ideal GPS, there is none, sorry!

I have recently added a laptop for mobile use and hopefully the waypoint issue will become moot for me. Check out APRSIS32 running on a ultra mobile. I have mine (not really an ultramobile but close) running and it is really awesome!

Best regards,
Fred

Interesting!

I have a couple of 350 and I don't consider the way it handles Mobile stations the ideal by a long shot!!!!! I am constantly bombarded with waypoints full all the time because it adds a extra number to the end of the SSID each time it is heard so to me the bread crumb trail seems to be a better way to go and waypoint expiration sure would help eliminate running out of waypoints.

So tell me again how the 350 handles it properly? Because I don't see it that way.

Let's try this again! Fingers got faster than brain.

If you have 50 stations come to the Nuvi350 then you use up 50 waypoints.

But on all other Nuvis, if those same 50 stations are moving and generate 10 position each, then you use up 500 waypoints.

Clearly the first is best and that is where the Nuvi350 comes in. It does the first and is currently the best.

Best regards,
Fred

I have never heard of a Nuvi 350 connected with an FMI cable
to an OT2m / T2-135 / T2-301 doing what you are describing.
The Nuvi 350 properly handles waypoint upload... i.e. you don't
end up with a "breadcrumb" trail of waypoints with a different
number tagged on the end. The non 350 Nuvis give you the
breadcrumb trail as you are describing. I don't know if it's true,
but perhaps you have a very old firmware version in the 350
and it needs to be updated.

In my experience, it doesn't do what you are describing.

Hi All,

Has anyone tried the garmin nuvi 760 gps navigator?
The reason that I ask is that my dad has one of these devices and I
might see if I can get one of the FMI cables & try it out but I wanted
to know other peoples experience first with this model.
I understand that the nuvi 350 is the recommended one at the moment
but I am interested to hear others experiences until get the cable.

Thanks :-)

Did you look at the Wiki page that lists the tested models?

That's why the table of tested models is posted.

We are attempting to deploy a large number of weather stations using the T2-135
in an Alinco DR-135T. Since we are forced to use tactical call signs, we have
run into an issue. If the tracker 2 is configured with a tactical call in MYCALL
and the responsible station call sign is placed in the COMMENT, we get 2 packets
to fire at the INTERVAL time. One contains the position packet and the COMMENT
entry tagged on the end and the other packet contains the position packet with
the weather data tagged on the end. This creates more unneccesary overhead than
we care to load on the local packet network.

MYCALL must remain tactical since there are not enough SSID's to support a
single callsign. The tactical call sign is more descriptive of the location
which is an additional plus.

It would be nice to send an ID packet every 10 minutes with no routing path
specified and let the weather packets fire at the specified interval and path. I
am sure I can handle the ID through scripting, but eliminating the position
packet that does not contain the weather payload seems like a code modification.

If I could grab the formatted weather data via scripting it may be possible to
issue a BEACON command with position and weather payload. Then I could take
INTERVAL out of the picture.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Subject: DAO digits?

Greetings,

I was just playing with the DAO digits in my wife's T2-135 (KJ4OVQ-9)
and it seems that the additional precision piece of the beacon isn't
coming out correctly. From aprs.fi:

KJ4OVQ-9>APOT21,WIDE1-1,WIDE2-2:/152533h2759.80NS08039.53Wv251/000!W!

That !W! is supposed to have 2 more characters in there that are either
the raw additional digits (as implied by the T2-135 manual, "an extra
digit of precision") or a base-91-encoded pair of digits for each of the
lat and lon (per http://www.aprs.org/aprs12/datum.txt).

Is anyone else using this or did I not get enough configuration modified
to have it work properly?

The T2-135 is inside an Alinco DR-135 and is connected via an FMI cable
to a Nuvi 350. Is it possible that FMI doesn't provide more than
hundredths of minutes of precision?

Lynn (D) - KJ4ERJ

PS. I've turned DAO back off after this initial test, so you're looking
for 2 raw packets between 15:21:25 and 15:26:15 UTC at
