I find it really wonderful that you guys can so easily make up your personal charts. I really have so many favourites that it will take me another lifetime to figure out which ones I like best among these fantastic songs. By the way, I think 'Pop Star' is just another example of Toyah's outstanding creativity and it's brilliant!!!! 'Angel & Me' and 'The Vow' were often chosen as favourites by friends (non-Toyah fans, but interested) apart from 'Thunder In The Mountains' or 'It's A Mystery' - the obvious choices.
The only thing I could make my mind up on is the simple fact, that I love 'Anthem' to death and always will. You can call it a keyboard-heavy, commercial or whatsoever album, but each song has its own identity and - endowed with great lyrics - stands proud with unique creativity.
Of course, 'The Changeling' comes VERY close.

My two favorite songs are Angel and Me and The Vow, also! My third would be Pop Star, but this is still weird! I never knew anyone who liked these 2 out of all of Toyah's songs! But, I disliked Ophelia's Shadow, love Minx and Dreamchild. And the Changeling will always be Toyah's BEST!
Andrew
New York, USA
My favourite album is still THE CHANGELING followed by WARRIOR ROCK and LOVE IS THE LAW!
In my opinion are Brave New World, The Angel & Me and The Vow some of her best songs.
I like also the style of the progressive records OPHELIA'S SHADOW and SUNDAY ALL OVER THE WORLD very much.
I don't like some parts of MINX. The Latin Quarter cover America For Beginners is great, but I hate Soul Passing Through Soul.
<<I like also the style of the progressive records OPHELIA'S SHADOW and
SUNDAY ALL OVER THE WORLD very much.>>
I have listened to the Sunday album several times but can't seem to find
much interesting. It sounds like Ophelia but not as good. The trouble
with this kind of Progressive, for me anyway, is that there is rarely a
good hook or a beat. The songs just kind of meander on without making an
impression. There are a few exceptions on Ophelia. I love Brilliant day.
I personally feel that Toyah needs to get over Robert Fripp. Her music
was just fine before he came along to "influence" things.

Is "Love's unkind" a Donna Summer song? I always thought it had a
country feel to it.

Hi Marcus,
Someone I used to correspond with had it on a bootleg CD. They taped it
for me. It did have a Prodigy sound. I guess I should explain the reason
I really dislike the dance records. I personally don't care for 90's
music in general. I know that sounds a bit harsh but it's just the way I
feel. This is how I discovered Toyah. In 94 I realized that the only
CD's I was buying were 80's re-issues. I was disappointed that there
wasn't anything else for me to search for so I started reading about
older, lesser known artists and taking chances on their work. In 97 a
friend sent me a video of Toyah doing "Be proud, be loud" on Top of the
pops. I loved her energy and the way she looked. I started buying her
stuff and with everything I found I fell further in love. I was quite
poor for several months since every available cent went for buying over
priced second hand Toyah stuff. I was proud of all that I was able to
find. Everything except that darn Anthem CD, but who cares. We're
getting a bigger and better re-issue soon!

How in the world did you get to listen to the 'Eternity' material? Although I don't like 'Dreamchild', I would really like to hear it. I was glad to hear, that this dance style wasn't Toyah's preference, but as she mentioned that the album would sound as the Prodigy's 'Firestarter', I was curious, because I love 'Firestarter' and a more aggressive dance sound could fit Toyah much better than the mellow stuff on 'Dreamchild'.

Call me cynical, but I can't help thinking that the the producers of
Dreamchild were trying to make money on the back of Toyah. I got even
more cynical when Phoenix was released with an early Eighties picture of
the Toyah on the front, suggesting the material was also of that era.
The problem with Dreamchild (apart from Toyah didn't write it) is that
it's an approximation of what the producers think 'techno' and 'ambient
dance' music is. It's just not authentic.
Anyway, my all time favourite Toyah track is Love's Unkind from Desire.
I just wish that Toyah would do a Donna Summer tribute album! There! I
dare someone to agree with me!

I really love the Dreamchild CD, even though Toyah cowrote only one song on
the CD. Still, this CD was one of my favorites of 1994 and yielded many
personal hits for me. I have a friend who liked many of the Toyah tapes I
made him over the years, and Dreamchild was his favorite album of 1994. I
gave the honors to Essex from Alison Moyet that year, but it just goes to
show.
Andrew
I'm glad that you are able to appreciate some of Dreamchild. I never
bought it but someone was kind enough to make a tape copy for me. I
listened, in disgust, once and taped over it. e-mail groups.

Hi Marcus,
I'm glad that you are able to appreciate some of Dreamchild. I never
bought it but someone was kind enough to make a tape copy for me. I
listened, in disgust, once and taped over it. I even heard the
unreleased Eternity album and was just as disappointed. I was glad to
read that Toyah wasn't thrilled with it either.
I really can't pick 1 reason why I hate "It's a mystery". There are
several. The chorus drives me nuts, the tempo of the song, everything I
guess. I've tried to like it, believe me. To be honest I think a lot of
her singles are definitely the weaker songs. I'm not fond of "I want to
be free" or even "Good morning universe" and "Soul passing through soul"
is right up there with "It's a mystery". "Brave new world" grew on me
after seeing the video. That really does help in some cases.
I hope everyone on this list has e-mailed Connisseur Collection,
expressing their interest in Toyah re-issues. I was quite surprised with
them. After "Live and more" came out I sent them a letter, by post,
filling them in on how in demand some Toyah items are. Such as the
outrageous price that Anthem on CD goes for, as well as Minx. I got much
more detailed as well. Much to my surprise they e-mailed me and told me
that they we're impressed with the response to their Toyah CD's and that
they were considering re-issueing the Safari albums. A latter e-mail
confirmed that they were re-issueing "Anthem" and "Changeling" in
January. How's that for results!

Just received Scotts message and agree, we have to give life to this list.
Especially to reply to Scott, I totally agree with him that the DREAMCHILD album is THE outstanding black sheep among Toyah's great work. It came like a shock to me, first when I read that the lyrics were written by someone else then when I actually heard it. Sounded to me as if some techno disciples brainwashed Toyah and forced her to sing on these tracks. Nevertheless, I do think that Dreamchild, Unkind and Tone Poem are good tracks, but the rest of the album is so insignificant.
But hey Scott, why do you hate 'It's A Mystery'? When I bought the 'Anthem' LP back in 1982, it was apparently the only song that I didn't like as much as the rest, but it took no more than a couple of days to grow on me.
As to my favourite tracks, I really can't decide. Guess, it's 'Jungles Of Jupiter' or 'Laughing With The Fools' or 'Street Addict' or 'God Ceases To Dream' or ... and I could go on forever like this!

This list is awfully quiet. Somebody bring up a subject and let's chat
on endlessly about it, like they do on the Siouxsie list. Let's rave
about favorite albums/songs (Love is the law, Clapham junction), etc..
or bitch about songs/albums you just can't stand (It's a
mystery/Dreamchild). OK, who's next.....?

Age:
40 - my birthday is very near Toyahs!
First Exposure to Toyah:
Saw her on Shoestring ,believe it or not! After this I bought Blue
Meanings and Anthem and it went on from there.
Have I seen Toyah live?
Yes plenty of times. My first time was at Hammersmith Odeon in 1982(?),
My favourite from that period a very atmospheric gig at
Shaftesbury Theatre London. I caught her again on the Dreamchild tour
a few years ago, and have since seen her at Ronnie Scotts B'ham,
Camberley, Guildford,Edmonton,Woking,Marquis Club, Salisbury etc. The
last time I saw here was at the Mean Fiddler in Harlesden.
My most treasured Toyah Possession?
I guess it has to be a set playlist which I nicked off the stage at the
end of the gig and which Toyah signed for me in the bar afterwards.
