TUESDAY NIGHT SWING in the BEACHES
A double feature evening hosted by the dynamic duo.
TUESDAY NIGHT SWING PRACTICES at the Beaches Recreation Centre hosted by
MANDI followed by TUESDAY NIGHT SWING at the River Bottom hosted by
TIFFANY just moments away!
THE RIVER BOTTOM -- a casual lindy evening in the Beaches. Tiffany is
arranging VERY CHEAP martinis for us and of course some swinging tunes.
Things should get started at about 9:30. The River Bottom can be found
on the south side of Quees St. East at Kenilworth (across the street
from the Lion on the Beach and Lick's). I've marked it R on the map
below. Please come out and show your support this Tuesday for our little
lady's first night. I hope to see EVERYBODY there.
THE BEACHES REC. CENTRE -- we begin practice this week. This is opened
to everyone and is completely free but YOU MUST CONTACT ME AHEAD OF
TIME. I suggest coming in partners. Please bring a change of shoes and
light clothing (this room will get hot!). I have room 3 booked from 7
'til about 9:30.
By SUBWAY go to Main station and catch the Main 64 South bus down to
Queen. Hop off at Williamson Road in front of the school. (see map)
By STREETCAR take the 501 Queen car marked Neville Park to Lee Ave. just
after the park in front of the TD bank. It's just a short walk up to the
Rec. Centre. (see map)
By CAR... I don't drive so you can figure it out yourself.

Hey everybody,
Keep the weekend of February 27th open for Steven Mitchell in Ithaca!
Steven is the world's foremost lindy hop teacher and performer. You will
learn more than mere steps from Mr. Cat Daddy, you will learn how to fully
appreciate swing music and to move to it with more feeling than you ever
thought possible.
Here are some preliminary plans:
On Saturday, February 27th, lessons during the day. Probably beginning to
intermediate levels.
Saturday evening, swing dance to benefit Minnie's Moochers, our very own
teenage Hepcats. The Moochers will put on a fashion show and will perform a
new choreography. You will always be able to say that you saw those
Moochers way back when... Joe Salzano and the Blue Devils will keep in the
groove all night.
On Sunday, February 28th, there will be more lessons.
On Monday, March 1, during the day, there will be a class for instructors of
swing dance who wish to get insights into the teaching of Lindy Hop. Open
to all who currently teach swing dance.
More details will come out soon, but expect a workshop unlike any other.
This is going to be more than a workshop, it's going to be a social event
too!
Steven Mitchell's visit is sponsored by Upstate Dance Studies (Contact
person: Victoria Diana at 607-273-0963). You may also email me, Ken Wright,
at kwright@... As soon as we have more details on times,
locations and costs, we will send them out.
Ken Wright
------- End of Forwarded Message
I'm going to try out the swing lessons at Hart House on Friday, 9-10pm. I
figure that I'd rather unwind on Friday night and leave the Thursday for
homework and other such things.

What does this entail? Info about the group's purpose, activities, etc?
Or what else?

Just got e-mail about the Darktown Strutter's Ball (January 23rd in
New York City - see http://www.jittersauce.com/special_events/) -
Pre-advance tickets sales only, tickets will not be sold at door.
Available tickets are limited and disappearing quickly. This event
will sell-out!!!
To purchase tickets ($40 per ticket + service charge) call
212.269.4TIX or go on-line to <http://www.ticketweb.com/>.
Darktown Strutter's Ball is NYC's first Black and White Swing Formal,
featuring the NYC's First Battle of the Big Bands since the late
1940's!!! George Gee and His Make-Believe Ballroom versus the Harlem
Renaissance Orchestra. NYC's premiere Big Bands will share the stage
SIMULTANEOUSLY, battling it out tune to tune, and within the same
tune, sidemen from both Big Bands will challenge each other taking
swing to another level.
All this takes place on dance floor that is 10,000 sq.ft. at the
Metropolitan Pavilion, 110 West 19th Street, between 6th & 7th
Avenues.
So, it's still cheaper to buy tikcets by mail, but maybe it's safer to
get them by phone.
I am looking forward to this!
Solomon
I ran across this today and thought some people might be interested. In
addition, it does have some swing material in it so it still qualifies for this

Hi everyone,
Lisa Jacobs teaches Lindy Hop and West Coast Swing in Toronto. She teaches at
Dancing on King (King and Church) and Martha Hicks Studio (Yonge and Eglinton).
She holds Lindy Hop classes Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights;
beginner through intermediate/advanced level classes are available. She also
has beginner level workshops scheduled for Sat Jan 23 (part 1) and Sat Jan 30
(part 2). (I assume everyone already knows that lisa is bringing Steven
Mitchell to town the weekend of Jan 15th).
Lisa also teaches West Coast Swing - Sunday and Monday evenings. Beginner
through intermediate/advanced level classes are available.
Please visit her website (see signature) or contact lisa at swing@...
or (416)693-0125 for details.
Regards,
Richard (for lisa)

Regarding the Darktown Strutter's Ball
Yesterday's meeting was poorly attended (in fact, everyone present had
also been present at the spontaneous 4am meeting over pancakes last
week when we decided to call this meeting), so this is what we've
decided: we won't charter a bus. Nor will we pursue a group ticket
discout. Instead, people will carpool (either in their own vehicles
or in rental cars or a van or something). This way we don't need to
coordinate travel: people might want to go down there on Friday night
or on Saturday morning, and may want to return on Sunday wee hours
(right after the dance) or sleep in NY on Saturday night and then come
back here on Sunday at a reasonable time of morning.
According to the web page (http://www.jittersauce.com/special_events/),
if you order your ticket before tomorrow (literally, you have to get
your letter postmarked today), then it will cost US$30 (that's $40,
with a $5 discount for being outside of NY and NJ, and another $5
discount for joining the Jittersauce mailing list). If you wait til
after today, it will cost you $5 more. I have no idea how many
tickets (if any) are still available.

Not entirely Lindy Hop, but related.
The Duke Ellington songbook "Hit Me with a Hot Note" is playing at the
Hummingbird centre for 2 shows on March 10th, 2pm & 8pm. It stars
Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr (previously Fifth Dimension) and touts
itself as "a song & dance celebration featuring broadway performers & a
sizzling jazz band".
I did some investigating and discovered that group tickets are available
for 15 or more. The top price is $59 for individual & $50 for groups. I
have 8-10 people interested in the evening show. If anyone is interested
they can let me know (& be prepared to pay by next week) & I will pursue
the group route. Let me know.

No connection to that guy Bassam Hanafi; haven't heard of him. Most
people who say they'll give "swing" lessons seem to mean jive/east
coast swing. Most people who mean lindy hop seem to say lindy hop.
We may do this thing on Sunday afternoons instead of Fridays. Ray,
I'll keep you posted.
Incidentally, in that message when I said, "Just write to
toronto_lindy@...", evidently I intended
"toronto_lindy@onelist.com". That was some kind of a Freudian slip of
the fingers. I wasn't intending to send teachers off into
Microsoft-land.

I'm game for that. I'm not sure about Friday evenings, though... I'd have to
figure out what time in the evening I might be doing something else. Does it
have anything to do with that guy Bassam Hanafi? He apparently wanted to give

Some lindy hop announcements:
DANCE THIS THURSDAY
* This Thursday at the Hooch will be a big night - it's Zoey, Mandi, and
Tom's one-year lindy hop anniversary, so please come dance and help
them celebrate! 817 Queen St. W., 9pm, $5 cover. The band is the Hot
Five Jazzmakers.
CLASSES
* Martin and Jane are starting a new series of classes tonight. Phone
them at (416)208-3279 if you're interested in signing up. I gather
there will be a level 1 class (8pm-10pm on Sundays, assuming there's
enough demand), a level 2 class (4pm-6pm on Sundays), and a "level 4"
class (phone for info). I don't think they're doing a level 3 class
this month.
* Peter Renzland is having a "semi-open house" at his studio this month
- all his lindy hop classes (Mondays and Wednesdays at 7:30pm) are
half-price. Call him for details, (416)323-1300.
By the way, any lindy hop teachers on this list should feel welcome to
advertise your classes here. Just write to toronto_lindy@....
PRACTICE SESSIONS
* Zoey says that there's an open lindy hop practice on Wednesday
nights. Everybody is welcome to come; ask her (fishx@...)
for details. The only catch is that every girl must bring a guy for
even numbers.
* There will be a group of U of T students meeting on Friday afternoons
or evenings (or some other time of week perhaps; we haven't fixed a
time yet) to practise lindy hop. We'll be meeting at Hart House.
This will be free for U of T students; everyone else is welcome too
but I think you'll have to pay money to use the Hart House facilities
if you don't have a U of T ID. Let me know if you're interested, and
then I'll keep you posted.
NEW YORK TRIP
* If you're interested in going to the Darktown Strutter's Ball in New
York on January 23, and if you'd like to get in on group travel
arrangements, please come to a meeting today at 2pm at Fruition (492
College St.).
THE TORONTO_LINDY MAILING LIST
* We're up to 40 members! By the way, everyone is free to write to this
list. We don't want it to become a noisy environment for random
unrelated discussions, but if you have something to say which relates
to lindy hop in Toronto, please send it to the list by writing to
toronto_lindy@onelist.com.
See you soon,
Solomon
If you're interested in getting in on group travel and accomodations
plans for the Darktown Strutters' Ball (taking place in New York City
on Saturday, January 23), please come to a meeting this Sunday to
discuss it! We'll be meeting at Fruition (492 College St., just west
of Bathurst) at 2pm on January 3.
(Items on the agenda: how many people are going? Should we carpool or
charter a bus? Can we get a group discount on tickets? Etc.)
See www.jittersauce.com/special_events for details about the ball.
See you all tonight at Swing Ding!
Solomon
P.S. if you know any Toronto-area lindy hoppers who might not be on
this mailing list or who might not be reading their e-mail between now
and Sunday, please pass the word on to them.

Swing folks -
I keep talking to people about New Year's Eve plans, and people keep
saying that they're "planning" to go to Swing Ding but not actually
committing to it until they find out who else is going. So, let me be
brash here and say that I am definitely going to Swing Ding. No
"planning" about it. I'm there. And I hope you're all there too
cause I want to dance with you! All the info is at
<http://webhome.idirect.com/~eldeluxo/>, and it costs $35.
The other thing coming up is a big dance in New York City on January
23, the Darktown Strutter's Ball. Have a look at
<http://www.jittersauce.com/special_events/>. I hear the tickets are
selling out fast, so we should make plans soon. Do you think there
are enough Torontonians going that we could charter a bus? (I'm
really not kidding... I don't know how much it would cost, but I
remember how many of us were at the Rochester workshop and I think if
we got that many people together it'd be cheaper, faster, and more fun
than buying bus tickets! But otherwise we can car pool.) So, who all
thinks they're going to this?
Take care,
Solomon
P.S. I guess I'll probably be out dancing every night this week, so
I'll see you soon!
P.P.S. my apologies for the overuse of exclamation points in this
message... that's what happens when I stay up this late...
I just phoned the Reservoir, and actually spoke to a real person; he
told me that they're closed until next Tuesday. The online listing
that claimed they'd be open on the 24th and 25th was simply incorrect.
Solomon
Hello everyone. Rumour (from a reliable source) has it that
registration is quickly filling up for the Jan. 15-17 Steven Mitchell
workshop. In particular, there are fewer than ten spaces left for
followers! So, if any of you are intending to go but haven't
registered yet, hurry up and phone Lisa or you might be disappointed.
(By the way, all students of Lisa, Peter, and Jane&Martin get the
discounted price, so make sure to let her know if you qualify.)
