MESSAGES FOR THE TREK

Preview Edition

September 9, 2002

http://abundancetrek.com

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/tnc4tna/

email: John@...

+ MESSAGES FOR THE TREK is the new online journal of the ABUNDANCETREK COMMUNITY. This is a new beginning for this particular journey of faith, hope and love under this particular name. All of the messages which appear here are also posted at an eGROUP called THE NEW CHURCH FOR THE NEW AGE (tnc4tna). Go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/tnc4tna/ to join this fun group.  Thank you, current members of this e-group.  You have kept me going!

+ You are on the mailing list for MESSAGES FOR THE TREK. Of course, you can always send send an email requesting to be removed from the list.

+ ABUNDANCETREK and THE NEW CHURCH FOR THE NEW AGE are just words. Hopefully, the ideas that are associated with these words are useful for the greater movement of faith, hope and love which is happening on our planet today.

+ Until other abundancetrekkers post messages here, you need to know that I am the sole writer at this point. I'm John A. Wilde. I'm looking forward to the day when other abundancetrekkers will add their thoughts to mine. If that day doesn't come, then this abundancetrek will not be very much fun!

+ I am writing a book called ABUNDANCETREK. Your prayers and suggestions are appreciated as I work on this.

+ I am a Christian who wants to integrate Christian wisdom with the wisdom of other faiths. A book offering a lot of wisdom for such an integration is THE PERENNIAL PHILOSOPHY by Aldous Huxley. I will share some of his ideas in future editions of MESSAGES FOR THE TREK.

+ In the 60s, a well known slogan was born: "There is no way to Peace. Peace is the way." I agree with that wholeheartedly and I would paraphrase it for other important goals such as: "There is no way to Heaven. Heaven is the way." "There is no way to Abundance. Abundance is the way."

+ Real abundance has nothing to do with making lots of money. Indeed, making lots of money can get in the way of the awareness and appreciation of abundance.

+ I believe we are living during an era that I like to call THE GREAT EVOLUTIONARY LEAP FORWARD. In other words, we are changing our collective mind about a lot of things. The Human Being is becoming the Heavenly Being. We are learning how to accept Heaven's gift of Abundance. This is fantastic. It's fascinating. It's wonderful. It is also an adventure which includes a lot of pain and doubt and uncertainty. Courage is required. Colleagues are essential. We are in this thing together. The goal is a global village based on love. The means is a global village based on love.

+ I have come up with nine words which I believe describe Heaven: Abundance, Joy, Wisdom, Beauty, Love, Truth, Peace, Justice, and Freedom. Please note that Love is the centering word, the most important word. These 9 words also describe The New Church for the New Age. The New Church for the New Age is realized when Heaven is realized. Let's paraphrase that slogan again: "There is no way to The New Church for the New Age (Heaven). The New Church for the New Age (Heaven) is the way." In other words, Heaven is now here. Heaven is an attitude, an awareness, an awakening, a decision, a faith, a commitment, a movement, a journey, an adventure, a way of life. I believe that Heaven goes on forever. It is an illusion that we are ever anywhere else. The law of Heaven always apply. It is the law of love. Love is free and abundant. God is Love and everything God has ever created is Love. Anything we experience to the contrary is an illusion, a deceit, an unreality.

+ The TV shows, the books, the movies and the conventions associated with STAR TREK often but not always point to many of these Heavenly characteristics. The global village based on love is an important vision of STAR TREK.

+ I hope you will continue to read and enjoy MFTT. I plan to issue it somewhere between weekly and monthly for now.

How elegant is the morning sun
Shining on the rafters and eaves.
How cool are the terrace and pond after the rain.
I burn incense to break the deep silence,
Drink the spring water and relax in joy.
When mind is at ease and spirit is at peace,
Understanding is gained.
There is nothing left to comprehend.
Who can say that the realm of Tao is far from us?
How tranquil it is
Like the beginning of Heaven and Earth.
- Ni Tsan (1301-1374)

Be still and know God!

Community resolution for
"Let Love Ring!"

A resolution for observances of "Let Love Ring!"

[9-3-02]

A few weeks ago we posted information about "Let Love Ring!" - a program started in Nashville, TN, aiming to encourage communities around the nation to commemorate September 11th with activities affirming world community.

The founder of that group was later contacted by an attorney in Oregon who has responded enthusiastically to their initiative by drafting two resolutions, one to be submitted to political entities in the U.S., and the other to be sent to communities in other countries. Here's his draft resolution for US communities, by which they could proclaim September 11th as "Let Love Ring!" Day

A Resolution to designate September 11th as
"Let Love Ring!" Day

Whereas, on September 11, 2001, certain tragic events occurred in New York, Washington, D.C., and rural Pennsylvania that had a profound impact on the thoughts, emotions, and consciousness of Americans and of humanity around the world; and

Whereas, "Let Love Ring!" is a non-profit organization formed with the purpose of providing avenues for people to express love, acknowledge their common humanity, and take positive action in response to the events of September 11, 2001; and

Whereas, the organization's inaugural project is a worldwide event scheduled for September 11, 2002, with the intention to make that date, and every September 11 thereafter, a day of recognition that what is shared and common among all humans inhabiting this Earth is greater and stronger than any nationality, race, religion, ethnicity, or political persuasion that may appear to separate and divide us; and

Whereas, each planned event will involve the ringing of bells: the vision is to "Let Love Ring!" for a 24-hour period around the globe with the intent of simultaneously honoring the families and friends of the persons who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, while at the same time inaugurating a new era of recognition and appreciation of the shared humanity and human spirit which composes the essence of all peoples inhabiting this Earth.

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be It Resolved BY ________________________________________, that we hereby designate September 11, 2002, and every September 11 thereafter, as "Let Love Ring!" Day in ______________ and hereby affirm our complete and unqualified support to the efforts and goals of "Let Love Ring" related to September 11; and

Be It Further Resolved, that we urge and encourage all citizens of ____________ to participate in "Let Love Ring!" Day in furtherance of the laudable goals envisioned for that day.

+The first anniversary of the terrorist attack on NYC and DC is a week away. What can I add to the conversation? I think GROUND ZERO needs to continue to be a sacred place. It needs to be hallowed ground. No particular organized religion can do this. The government can’t. It can only be done by "the people." "The people" are creating something new and different. Some call it "the New Age." Some call it "the New Paradigm." Some call it a ‘spiritual awakening." But once a label is applied, it is no longer "the work of the people," the definition of the word liturgy. Not far from GROUND ZERO is the United Nations building. The UN began operations in 1945, the year the atomic bomb was used to destroy 2 Japanese cities. Those two cities have both set apart hallowed ground for the world. Now, New York City has an opportunity to join them by allowing GROUND ZERO to remain a place where "the people" can come together somehow to share a vision of a peaceful world, of everybody getting along, of religious and ethnic and class intolerance disappearing because "the people" simply won’t stand for it anymore. There’s work to be done, not constructing new twin towers, but constructing a global village based solidly on love.

The project of "marketing the next war" is well underway, as the United States government works to build public support or indifference for an assault on Iraq. Amid the flurry of words and arguments comes a quote from an unlikely source of contemporary enlightenment -- Hermann Goering, head of the Nazi military command during the World War II.

Why of course the people don’t want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people don’t want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.

The quote (dated April 18, 1946) appears in the book Nuremberg Diary (Farrar, Straus & Co 1947), by Gustave Gilbert (an Allied appointed psychologist). Gilbert visited daily with Goering and his associates in their cells, afterwards making notes and ultimately writing the book about these conversations. Thanks to the group Every Church A Peace Church (www.ecapc.org) for passing this along.

examine the Dharma

complicated sutras.
They should learn
how to read the love letters

My hut isn’t quite six feet across
Surrounded by pine, bamboos, and mountains,
An old monk hardly has room for himself
Much less for a visiting cloud.

"Beware of the leader who bangs of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind. And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind is closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry infused with fear and blinded by patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader and do it gladly so." Julius Caesar {100-44 BC}

The substance of a sage
Is nameless and cannot be spoken of;
The empty door of truth as it really is
Cannot be tarried in.
- Pai-chang (720-814)

I think I "get it."  It's something like "letting go and letting God."  As Mary Beth said (I'm paraphrasing and taking great liberties!): zen seeks to tease us into enlightenment because in reality we are already enlightened, just ignorant.  Or, as Christian scripture says: "For God's foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God's weakness is stronger than human strength." (1 Corinthians 1:25)

So, LIGHTEN UP & LOOSEN UP (LULU!).  The truth will get you and not the other way around.  Do I get it?  Do you?

Look at how our heads and feet
Are capped and shod without a second thought.
It is like the man who had a long beard,
But did not anguish at its length
Until one day someone asked him
How he arranged it when he went to bed.
First he put it inside, then outside the coverlet,
The whole night he spent looking for the best position.
And tossed and turned until the dawn of day.
In the end he wanted only to chop it off!
Although this fable is light and humorous,
Still it contains a much deeper meaning.
When I asked the dharma master about this,
He gave a smile and nodded his assent.

Your Daily Practice _ Morning

Each day is a new beginning. Your task today is to learn the practice of consciously entering your body and your day. Begin by focusing attention on your entire day from morning to evening.

Review your plans for today:

Think about where you need to be and with whom you need to be.

Do you feel stressful about this day or do you feel comfortable?

Do you feel prepared for today's events?

Are you projecting fears and expectations into this day?

Your First Chakra

Allow the truth 'All is One' to penetrate your body

Drop your attention to the root of your spine.

Feel yourself magnetically connected to every part of life:

the fragrance of the earth

the oceans and rivers

the air

your family and friends

the planet

Identify your fears for today and pull them into your consciousness.

Acknowledge the strength of the energetic circuitry connecting you to all life.

Visualize that strength replacing your fears for today.

Standing tall.

Your Second Chakra

Allow the truth 'Honor One Another' to penetrate your body.

Move your attention gradually up your spine to your lower back, hips and genital area.

Feel the fire and vibrant energy of this area.

Focus that energy toward the key areas of this chakra:

Relationships: Who am I going to be with today?

Work: What am I going to do today?

Money: How do I feel about it today?

Creativity: What am I going to create today?

Your Third Chakra

Allow the truth 'Honor Yourself' to penetrate your body.

Breathe deeply as you shift your attention to your solar plexus and abdominal area.

Focus on your self_esteem and how you feel about yourself today:

Am I feeling strong? Frightened?

Do I need someone's approval today?

Will I need to be courageous?

Remind yourself of your boundaries, dignity, inherent honor, and integrity

Make a spiritual promise in terms of how you want to live your life today

Your Fourth Chakra

Allow the truth 'Love is Divine Power' to penetrate your body.

Raise your attention up to your heart, the center of love.

Welcome the people you're scheduled to meet today into your meditation:

Where you feel love for them, send more, boundless love.

For those you feel challenged to love, say the prayer , "Let me learn more about how to love them today."

Think about who you need to forgive today; release the rage, bitterness or hurt feelings from your heart.

Tell yourself "Forgiveness is not easy, but today I ask for one more step toward that goal."

Release the prayer that you want to look at today through your heart and not through your fears; that you want to feel gratitude for events that do or don't happen as they should.

Keep your attention on the right way to walk into this day, with a heart full of love.

Your Fifth Chakra

Allow the truth 'Surrender Personal Will to Divine Will' to penetrate your body.

Move your attention to your throat area.

Define your needs and desires for today and let go of doing the same for others.

Make the choice to love this day instead of fearing it.

Envision choices that result in positive attitudes, memories, and feelings about yourself.

Vow to express yourself honestly.

Your Sixth Chakra

Allow 'Seek Only Truth' to penetrate your body

Focus your attention upwards to your mind _ the world behind your eyes.

Go beyond the limits of the rational mind and accept the Divine's Plan for you.

Prepare your mind to enter the day feeling good and not generating illusions, false truths or fears.

For today, release old grudges, beliefs, attitudes and patterns that no longer serve you.

Remember that everything in your life is there for a reason and to teach you truth.

Your Seventh Chakra

Allow the truth 'Live in the Present Moment' to penetrate your body.

Pull your attention up and out, and hold the idea 'live in present time.'

Let go of the past and do not anticipate the future.

During the day, practice the discipline of telling yourself, "This is all I have. This is all there is to my life right now."

Invoke this prayer:

I am committed to feeling a bond with each person I meet, to respecting my own integrity and honor, to living within the energy of love and compassion and returning to that energy when I don't feel it, to making wise and blessed choices with my will, to maintaining perceptions of wisdom and non_judgment, to release the need to know why things happen as they do, and not to project expectations over how I want this day to be and how I want others to be. And finally, my last prayer, 'to trust the Divine'. And with that I bless my day with gratitude and love.

love - john

I think that the connection piece is right, but not the whole picture.  Zen sayings are often designed to crack one's ability to understand logically, to try to get one past cognition.  It seems to me that there is both the simplicity suggested in that piece as well as the deliberate "non-sense" to take one beyond the sensing, beyond the understanding, because the holy is beyond all that.  Also because the connection requires giving up the desire to connect (as well as all other desires)--anything remotely resembling an ability to control our experience.  I'm not sure this makes sense, but this is how I understand this piece.  (Using the word "understand" loosely here; I can't really say that I get it any better than John said he does.)

I thnk it means that when your soul is connected to the universe, you
will be in a natural cycle, eating when needed, sleeping when
necessary. Barb

from http://dailyzen.com

In everyone it towers like
A mile high wall,
Flashing a great precious light
In everyone’s presence.
One thought ten thousand years,
Ten thousand years one thought,
Eating when hungry,
Sleeping when tired,
Who worries about the alternation
Of light and dark,
The change of the seasons?
- Daio (1235-1309)

Sometimes I just don't get these zen thoughts at all.  I guess it's because I'm quite thick.  Maybe that's why I need Zen!  to make me thin again!  Any thoughts on the meaning here?

this is from http://dailyzen.com

There is a reality even prior to heaven and earth;
Indeed, it has no form, much less a name;
Eyes fail to see it;
It has no voice for ears to detect;
For it then becomes like a visionary flower in the air;
It is not Mind, nor Buddha;
Absolutely quiet, and yet
Illuminating in a mysterious way,
It allows itself to be perceived only by the clear-eyed.
It is Dharma truly beyond form and sound;
It is Tao having nothing to do with words.
- Dai-o Kokushi

A high priority for this group is PRAYER.  So, please pray for (and care for):

+ Mike, in Maryland, has a cyst in his brain and is having seizures.  He may or may not need surgery.

+ Someone I know and love in NYC who just lost her job and is needing hope and faith.

+ John in upstate NY is facing another surgery for his back because the first one didn't take.

+  Sarah in upstate NY is GETTING MARRIED SOON and has just begun being a Pastor.

+ The Syracuse University School of Nursing is being phased out and this is affecting faculty, staff, families, students... and will have an impact on central NY (negative IMHO) (can opinion be part of prayer??)

+ the people of the middle east

+ people who hate

+ people in poverty

+ people with a deficit of joy or meaning in their lives

+ people who make the decisions which affect us all

I WELCOME YOUR PRAYERS OF ALL KINDS!

love - john

This is from http://dailyzen.com

Those who awaken never rest in one place.
Like swans, they rise and leave the lake.
On the air they rise and fly an invisible course.
Their food is knowledge.
They live on emptiness.
They have seen how to break free.
Who can follow them?
- Buddha in the Dhammapada

Hi!  How about that!  Buddha means awakening.  We are all potentially Buddhas, or Christs, or holy people or whatever your designation is because we are all endowed with complete awareness.  There are no words which will bring about this glorious liberation, just practice.  I like to say that we are here to breathe, or here to play, or something like that.  Just be!  LET IT BE!

So, breathe deeply and fully today and see what happens.  You don't even have to pay attention.  Just Be!
