12/5/09 - 12/6/09 | Saturday, 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, 12:00 - 4:00 p.m. (2 classes)

Instructor: Peter Edwards of Caper Land (downtown Troy)

Circuit bending is the experimental process of short-circuiting and re-wiring audio electronics for the purpose of discovering unintended, often bizarre functionalities. The process is fun and inventive and often leads to new forms of musical expression and interaction.   Instructor Peter Edwards will cover the basics of bending and help participants through the design and modification process.  Each student will received a soldering iron and a set of basic circuit bending tools to keep, and will transform one item they bring with them into a unique musical instruments.  This class is beginner friendly but previous experience with electronics and simple hand tool use is helpful.

A reception will follow ---- all events are free and open to the public.

On World AIDS Day, Hudson Valley Community College welcomes Cleve Jones,
international activist and founder of the AIDS Memorial Quilt.

Jones's career as an activist began in San Francisco during the turbulent
1970s. He worked as a student intern for pioneer gay rights leader Harvey Milk
following his unprecedented election to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.
(Jones is portrayed by Emile Hirsch in "Milk," the 2008 Academy Award-winning
film.) Jones conceived the idea of the AIDS Memorial Quilt at a 1985 candlelight
memorial for Milk, who was assassinated in 1978, and created the first quilt
panel in honor of a close friend, Marvin Feldman, in 1987.

Since then, the AIDS Memorial Quilt has grown to become the world's largest
community arts project, memorializing the lives of more than 85,000 American
AIDS' victims. Independent affiliates of The NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt
now operate in 50 countries around the world.

A dynamic and inspiring speaker, Jones travels extensively, lecturing at
high schools, colleges and universities. He lives in Palm Springs, CA and now
works as a community organizer for UNITE HERE, the international union
representing textile, hotel and restaurant workers.

What is a "Holiday Edition" you ask? Think the chocolate aisle in Rite-Aid. All the good stuff, wrapped up all pretty in a bow. Of course, there are only a few DJ's who can live up to these mighty Holiday standards.

• Ryan Kick (tango recordings, kolour records) Troy

• Lazer & Blazer (low pressings, fresh meat recordings) Troy

• Properly Chilled (select rhythms) San Diego

You may remember in July when Ryan, Lazer & Blazer killed the Discotheque afterparty, or Properly Chilled at the Thursday Mix-up. This month they're taking the controls and putting it on blast so you can dance off that deep-fried Turkey guilt. We are thankful.

Yes, it's bluegrass, mostly, but there's a lilt to the tunes, a bouncing drive to the melodies, the trace of an accent in Kevin's vocals, and here and there a touch of melancholy that seems to go hand in hand with the Irish persona.”

Lake George Arts Project Lake George Arts Project

The deadline for submissions for the 1st Annual “Peoples Pixel Project†has been extended to December 31st.

The “Peoples Pixel Project†is a video festival featuring original video shorts of 3 to 5 minutes.  A call for entries is open to anyone living within 75 miles of Lake George, NY.   Because this is a new event we feel that we need more time to spread the word. This is a community project – open to everyone – if you can make a video – you can be a part of this!

The event will culminate in a gala award night at the Charles Wood Theater, Glens Falls, NY, on Saturday, February 6, 2010. Awards will be presented in each category with a screening of all award winners.

The six categories are:
1. Tunes: Music related video where the primary focus is the music. Music MUST be original work for which the entrant owns the copyright.
2. U14: Work by artists 14 years old and younger in any category.
3. Get Reel: Documentary video.
4. Animated: Stop action, table-top animation, computer generated, hand-drawn, slideshow, etc., as long as it is not PRIMARILY live action.
5. Experimental: Experimental work, not necessarily narrative.
6. Narrative: Tell a story, but make it quick!

Submitting your DVD is easy: Visit our website for guidelines and entry form.

If you know anyone that may be interested in this project, please pass on this information…
If you are a Teacher/Professor please spread the word to your students!

Hey all,

Check out this past Thursday's episode of The Everything Film Show - the coolest internet radio film show around!  On this week's show, producer Sean Gaston discussed the real-life chilling details behind the documentary "Rough Cut." A film about two people who literally killed to make a movie.  You won't believe this until you hear it.  We also reviewed El Mariachi and counted down our Top 5 Favorite Acting Performances.

Check it out at http://www.blogtalkradio.com/TEFS  Or go to iTunes and type "TEFS" into the Search window and download the podcast for free!  Thanks!

There is no shortage of bad actors from an anti-US Venezuelan president, to Colombian para-military operatives, to al-Qaida agents among the Muslim population of the Guajira peninsula, to power-hungry conspirators well-placed in the US Government.  Come out and meet this very talented local writer!

Hello everyone,

My name is Daniel Trinh, and I along with other professionals are producing a powerful and inspirational non-union short film that will be entered into LOTS of film festivals including Oscar qualifying festivals like Sundance. The short film “Survival of the Fittest†is a smart dark drama that tastefully explores the following topics: school shootings, racism, school bullying, and more in a theatrical format.

In order for us to successfully make this film, we mainly need college age extras (18 and over only please) especially for Sunday 11/22 (all day). Below I’ve broken things down:

·         Sat 11/21 (half day):

-       Extras of all ages (18 or over only) may come.

-       Extras should not be wearing the color gray or cloths with logos.

-       Food & drink will be provided

Shoot location & time: Hudson Valley Community College in Brahan Hall (BRN) Classroom: 001@ 9:15am

·         Sun 11/22 (all day):

-       LOTS of college age extras needed (18 or over only)!!!!

-    Non-college age extras may come, but we will be cheating to make you appear college age.

-       Extras should not be wearing the color gray or cloths with logos.

-       Food & drink will be provided

Shoot location & time: Hudson Valley Community College in Brahan Hall (BRN) Classroom: 001 @ 10:00am

In regards to parking, only park in student lots. To play it safe, just park in the B-LOT and walk from there.

- Hudson Valley Community College address:                 80 Vandenburgh Ave., Troy, NY 12180

- Interactive Tour Map:                                                   https://www.hvcc.edu/tour/map/main/index.html

PDF of College Map:                                                  Attached to email

In addition:

-          I would be interested in hearing from people interested in helping with crew work especially if you have experience and equipments.

-          Also interested in getting one more investor on board – willing to offer a producer credit.

Best,

Daniel Trinh

Dance Performances by the Rhythm B-Boys the Thriller Dancers!

Also performing are the Thriller dancers from this year's Pittsfield Halloween Parade, who were such a hit they landed on the front page of the Eagle. They're students from downtown Pittsfield's Cantarella School of Dance.

Friday 11am: The Official Ribbon Cutting!

At 11am on Friday, November 20, the public is invited for the official ribbon-cutting and opening of the Beacon Cinema, organized by Downtown Inc. the organization that has led the Beacon Cinema's development for the past decade! Beacon Cinema Ribbon Cutting | Friday, November 20 | 11am | Beacon Cinema | 57 North Street | FREE
Click here to visit the Beacon Cinema's website, see what's playing, and sign up for free email updates!

And don't forget the movies: New Moon of course...!

If you didn't get tickets in time for tonight's midnight screening of New Moon, the much anticipated sequel to the blockbuster hit Twilight, don't worry. It will be playing through the weekend and beyond beginning tomorrow. In the second installment of Stephenie Meyer's phenomenally successful Twilight series, the romance between mortal and vampire soars to a new level as Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) delves deeper into the mysteries of the supernatural world she yearns to become part of, only to find herself in greater peril than ever before. Werewolves and vampires and teenagers, oh my! PG-13.
Click here for the official New Moon movie website and a preview!

And A Christmas Carol in REAL 3-D!

The Beacon Cinema is the only theatre in Berkshire County to have 3-D equipped theatres! Don't miss Disney's amazing 3-D remake of A Christmas Carol starring Jim Carrey. A multi-sensory animated  thrill ride re-envisioned by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Robert Zemeckis, it captures the fantastical essence of the classic Dickens tale. Ebenezer Scrooge (Jim Carrey) begins the Christmas holiday with his usual miserly contempt, barking at his faithful clerk (Gary Oldman) and his cheery nephew (Colin Firth). But when the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come take him on an eye-opening journey revealing truths Old Scrooge is reluctant to face, he must open his heart to undo years of ill will before it's too late. PG.
Click here for A Christmas Carol's website.

Plus The Yes Men Fix the World Paris

The Beacon Cinema's movie schedule kicks off with both an indie and a foreign film. The Yes Men are a group of pranksters who combine political activism, performance art, and the love of a good prank in the name of demanding that the private sector take responsibility for the damage it has done to the world and its people. The Yes Men Fix The World is their second feature-length documentary, and won the Audience Prize at this year's Berkshire international Film Festival. Paris is a French valentine to their beloved city that the New York Times described as "Poignant...Purely entertaining. Paris spreads out before you like a sumptous outdoor banquet." They are not rated & rated R, respectively.
Click here for the VERY amusing Yes Men Fix the World website!

And animated features: Planet 51 Fantastic Mr. Fox!

Opening Friday, Planet 51 is a galactic sized animated alien adventure comedy revolving around American astronaut Captain Charles 'Chuck' Baker, who lands on Planet 51 thinking he's the first person to step foot on it. To his surprise, he finds that this planet is inhabited by little green people who are happily living in a white picket fence world reminiscent of a cheerfully innocent 1950s America, and whose only fear is that it will be overrun by alien invaders...like Chuck!

And don't miss The Royal Tenenbaums director Wes Anderson's stop-action animated feature, Fantastic Mr. Fox, based on the Roald Dahl story! It's opening on Wednesday, November 25, just in time for Thanksgiving weekend! Both PG.
Click here to visit Planet 51's online home!

Plus The Blind Side: based on a true story

Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw and Oscar-winner Kathy Bates star in The Blind Side, the remarkable true story of All-American football star Michael Oher. A homeless African-American youngster from a single parent home, Oher (Quinton Aaron) is taken in by the Touhys, a well-to-do white family who help him fulfill his potential on and off the football field.

At the same time, Oher's presence in the Touhys' lives leads them to some insightful self-discoveries of their own. Living in his new environment, the teen faces a completely different set of challenges to overcome. PG-13.
Click here for showtimes for all of the movies playing beginning tomorrow, Friday, at the Beacon Cinema!

On Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 7:30 P.M. in Studio 2, the Curtis R.
Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) will host
a screening of "Examined Life", Astra Taylor’s exhilarating group
portrait of eight contemporary philosophers. The screening will be
followed by a talk with filmmaker Astra Taylor.

Taking philosophy out of the classroom and putting it back on the
street (which, after all, is where philosophy began), "Examined Life"
places the viewer in conversation with some of the most important
thinkers of our time. And it situates those thinkers in environments
that hold particular resonance for them and their ideas. Peter Singer
talks about the ethics of consumption while strolling among Fifth
Avenue’s posh boutiques. Slavoj Zizek visits a garbage dump to
question our beliefs about the environment. Judith Butler critiques
our fixation with individualism in what may be individualism’s Mecca,
the Mission District of San Francisco. And while driving through
Manhattan, Cornel West compares philosophy to jazz and the blues in
its power to bring the mind alive. “Ideas beam out from Astra Taylor’s
engaging new philoso-doc,” says The Village Voice’s J. Hoberman. “The
viewer basks in the intelligence on-screen and, occasionally, soaks up
the rays.”

Featuring Cornel West, Avital Ronell, Peter Singer, Kwame Anthony
Appiah, Martha Nussbaum, Michael Hardt, Slavoj Zizek, Judith Butler
and Sunaura Taylor.

Astra Taylor is a writer and documentary filmmaker whose work explores
the intersection of ideas with the “real worlds” of politics,
international development, and human rights. Her films include The
Miracle Tree: Moringa Oleifera; Persons of Interest, an official
selection at the 2004 Sundance, Rotterdam, and Human Rights Watch film
festivals and winner of the Amnesty International Humanitarian Award
at the Chicago International Documentary Film Festival, and Zizek! One
of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces to Watch” of 2006, Taylor
currently runs Hidden Driver Productions with Laura Hanna.

Unfiction is a series of documentary films that turn truth into
something more than fact, using poetry and imagination rather than
transparency and objectivity. Their filmmakers question the very
notion of authenticity and disregard the typical documentary
filmmaking practices. Instead, they stage their own realities on
location, employing techniques such as reenactment, personal voice-
over, and special effects.

The River Runs Both Ways: Reconsidering Dutch Explorations

Mother Dao the Turtlelike film stillJoin us Friday at 7 PM for an adventurous evening exploring colonization, imperialism and historical revisionism as Hudson's anniversary year winds down!  First, "Mother Dao the Turtlelike," an award-winning assembly of songs, poetry and nitrate films of 400-years of Dutch occupation in Indonesia.  Then Professors Tamar Gordon and Andrew Feffer lead a discussion on the implications of Dutch "discoveries" across the globe and our peculiar location at the end of this long historical tether.  Details.
