Enlightened Mind Vajrasattva Empowerment

Traga Rinpoche will be bestowing this empowerment which comes from a cycle
of teachings transmitted and hidden by the master Padmasambhava and then
later revealed by Terdag Lingpa, the founder of the great Mindroling
Tradition. This cycle of instructions, known as the Enlightened Mind Sadhana
of Vajrasattva, is both extensive and profound. It covers the entire scope
of the path from the preliminaries, generation stage, completion stage with
characteristics, the path of method, up through the practices of Trekcho
(cutting through) and Thogal (direct crossing). This empowerment of
Vajrasattva serves as a gateway to this incredible cycle of teachings.
Recognizing the importance of this empowerment, Jamgvn Kongtr|l placed it as
the first empowerment in the 1,700 empowerments of the Precious Treasury of
Hidden Teachings (rin chen gter mdzod). It is a particularly meaningful
opportunity to receive this empowerment from Traga Rinpoche, who personally
practiced the Enlightened Mind Sadhana of Vajrasattva in retreat.

Trekcho Teachings from the Zabmo Yangtig:
Introducing the Uncontrived Ground As It Is

Traga Rinpoche will be giving Dzogchen instructions based on the text
entitled the Stages of Introducing the Uncontrived Ground As It Is. These
instructions come from the Zabmo Yangtig or Innermost Essence of the
Profound cycle of instructions by foremost Tibetan Dzogchen master
Longchenpa. The Zabmo Yangtig is one part of the famous Nyingthig Yabzhi.
The text that Traga Rinpoche will be teaching from introduces one to evenly
resting in the uncontrived unborn ground of primordial purity. It gives
practical instructions on how to genuinely experience the nature of mind,
how to effortlessly rest in the primordial wisdom of the dharmakaya, and
vividly experience the ultimate way of abiding. There are also pith
instructions that introduce naked awareness within the context of all
experiences. Finally, there are instructions on how to guard the state of
non-distraction. In the context of these instructions, Traga Rinpoche will
instruct practitioners on how they may directly introduce themselves to the
nature of mind or primordial wisdom awareness and sustain it. These
instructions are very clear and precise and explain the very essence of the
practice of cutting through, or trekcho.

Yangzab Trekcho/Thogal:Pith Instruction Fruition Retreat

Traga Rinpoche will be continuing his teachings on Clearly Revealing
Primordial Wisdom composed by Patr|l Namkha Jigme. Namkha Jigme was one of
the sons of the famous D|djom Lingpa and was also regarded as the direct
incarnation of Patr|l Rinpoche. The text is an extensive commentary on the
The Completion of All Primordial Wisdom by Padmasambhava as revealed by the
great Drigung Rinchen Ph|ntshog (1509-1557). This rare commentary elucidates
the Dzogchen teachings of Khorde Rushen (Differentiating Samsara and
Nirvana), Trekcho (Cutting Through), and Thogal (Direct Crossing) in great
length with skillful detail. Traga Rinpoche will be giving teachings on the
final sections of this text. These explain how the practice of Trekcho and
Thogal lead to the fruition of Buddhahood, which cannot be intellectually
grasped or fathomed. These teachings are extremely profound in that they
point out for the practitioner the true goal of enlightenment that is
ultimately found in the essence of one's own mindstream and in the essence
of all appearing phenomena. The fruition of Dzogchen practice is realized
when all expectations and fears are severed once and for all, as one fully
realizes all inner and outer phenomena to be the energy of awareness arising
as the magical display of the enlightened bodies or kayas of Buddhahood. For
the highest level of practitioners with the greatest diligence, in this life
or at the time of death, even their physical bodies dissolve into a mass of
light as they attain what is known as the rainbow body. Traga Rinpoche will
also be imparting the essential pith instructions upon the Dzogchen
practices of trekcho and thogal, how to avoid obstacles along the path, how
to maintain awareness at all times, and how to really gain genuine
experience and realization through practice.

Time: 9:30-12 and 2:30-5 PM all days

Yangzab Amitayus Long Life Empoerment

Traga Rinpoche will be bestowing the long life Amitayus Empowerment form the
Extremely Profound Intention of the Sublime Dharma transmitted by Guru
Padmasambhava discovered by Drigung Rinchen Phuntsog. This particular
Amitayus empowerment is unique in that it introduces one to the outer,
inner, and secret aspects of immortality. One is introduced to the true
immortal vajra body essence of one's own present form together with the male
and female Buddhas of the five families abiding in the five cakras. This
empowerment also serves as the gateway to the three aspects long life
practice associated with this empowerment. There is an outer practice
whereby one does the meditation and recitation of the Buddha Amitayus. There
is an inner practice where one works with the sutle energies of prana in
order to attain immortality and tame one's mind. Finally, there is the
secret practice, wherein one utilizes the skillful means of union with a
consort to attain common accomplishments such as immortality and the ability
to perform the enlightened activites as well as the supreme accomplishment
of Buddhahood.

Great Yangzab DzogchenTransmission:Clearly Revealing Primordial Wisdom

Traga Rinpoche will be giving the vast reading transmission of the entire
commentary entitled Clearly Revealing Primordial Wisdom composed by Patr|l
Namkha Jigme. Namkha Jigme was one of the sons of the famous D|djom Lingpa
and was also regarded as the direct incarnation of Patr|l Rinpoche. The text
is an extensive commentary on the The Completion of All Primordial Wisdom by

Venerable Traga Rinpoche - A Brief Biography

Rinpoche is an accomplished Dzogchen master, having received profound
teachings from some of the greatest masters of Tibetan Buddhism -- including
His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche, Khenchen
Jigme Phuntsog and many others. He has completed more than ten years of
retreat. From Garchen Rinpoche, Traga Rinpoche received teachings on all
Drikung Kagyu texts on regular Dharma service and practice, the five-fold
Mahamudra, the entire Dzogchen Yangzab teachings, and many profound pith
instructions. He then did his Dzogchen Yangzab retreat at Lho Miyel Gon
monastery. In early 1984, Traga Rinpoche received full gelong ordination
from the Nyingma master Khenpo Munsel, who gave him the detailed teachings
on Dzogchen Cutting Through the Resistance to Primordial Purity. Khenpo
Munsel gently looked at Traga Rinpoche and said, your karmic propensity is
to practice Dzogchen. I am your karmic lama. If you can meditate, you have
today found the way to liberation in one life. You will never find something
like this even if you went to look for it with your horse's hooves encased
in steel. Spend one year near me and meditate. For the next seven years, he
did retreat near Khenpo Munsel, and practiced Cutting Through, Passing Over,
and many other advanced practices. In 1998, Lamchen Gyalpo Rinpoche --
determined to make Traga Rinpoche's vast knowledge and profound experiential
understanding of the highest level of Dzogchen teachings accessible to as
many students as possible -- enthroned him as Lopon Rinpoche (Precious
Master), with lavish praise for his hard work and outstanding achievements.
His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche selected Traga Rinpoche as the retreat master
and resident lama at the Garchen Buddhist Institute in Chino Valley,
Arizona, and asked his students to have full confidence in Traga Rinpoche,
just as, Garchen Rinpoche said, "I have full confidence in him."

The Practice of Psychology in Tibetan Medicine

A free public lecture presented by Aku Nyima, the foremost living doctor of Tibetan Medicine

Text Box: Friday, October 16th 4- 6 PM
Amherst College, Paino Lecture Hall, Earth Science Building
In Tibetan Medicine the mind and body are seen as inseparable from one another. Therefore emotional stress can lead to physical problems and mistreatment of the body can lead to mental disease. The underlying cause of mental illness is considered the imbalance of the 5 elements of the body, due to improper diet, lifestyle, season and influences of unseen forces. A Tibetan Doctor brings the five elements back into balance with diet and lifestyle changes as well as herbal and external treatments.
This lecture will be delivered by Aku Nyima, Founder and Director of the Qinghai Tibetan Medical Hospital, the largest hospital in Amdo, Tibet. He is also Professor of Qinghai Tibetan Medical School, Vice President of the Tso Ngon Tibetan Medical Group and the author of eight books on Tibetan Medicine. Aku Nyima has become the most well known doctor throughout Tibet for his limitless compassion towards his patients and his boundless knowledge of Tibetan Medicine. This one-time visit to America is a rare opportunity to meet this great living master.

9.30am - 4.30pm: Compassionate Samadhi Water Repentance 慈悲三昧水忏

The Compassionate Samadhi Water Repentance Sutra illustrates that karma cannot be eradicated and will bring results when the conditions are right.  More importantly, it provides an avenue for us to repent on our past negative actions.

Venerable Wuda was a highly respected monk in the imperial court of the Tang dynasty. In one of his previous lives during the Western Han dynasty, he was a general by the name of Yuanang whose vilification caused General Caocuo to be killed.  The karma that General Yuanang created by instructing others to kill did not bring retribution until the late Tang dynasty.  When Venerable Wuda coveted the high status of the Aguru Seat because of his greed and arrogance, only then did the evil karma manifest, in the form of an ulcer on his knee with a humanlike face.  The ulcer only healed when Venerable Wuda was told of the karmic cause of the ulcer and he sincerely repented on his actions.

Out of compassion, Venerable Wuda compiled the Compassionate Samadhi Water Repentance Sutra so that we too can have the opportunity to repent on our past unwholesome actions.  It is wished that the Compassionate Samadhi Water Repentance would cleanse the offenses of living beings so that they could obtain refreshing Dharma joy. The merits and virtues from the ceremony will be dedicated to both living and deceased beings in the Dharma Realm.

Thursday, September 10
Kurukulle Empowerment

Drubpon Rinchen Dorje will be giving the Kurukulla empowerment as arranged
by the great Drigung Kagyu master Rigdzin Chvkyi Dragpa. Kurukulla is a
goddess who embodies the enlightened attractive magnetizing activity of all
the Buddhas. Through the practice of the magnetizing goddess it is said that
one may magnetize all beings, sowing love, desire, and devotion in their
hearts. It is also taught that through the practice of Kurukulla one can
realize the true meaning of ultimate desire, the inseparable union of bliss
and emptiness.
Time: 7 PM

Friday, September 11
Dream Yoga Practice Instructions

Drubpon Rinchen Dorje will be giving detailed instructions on the practice
of dream yoga. He will be teaching from the Exquisite Words of Lord Naropa:
A Clear Explanation for Practicing the Instructions of the Profound Path of
the Six Dharmas of Naropa by Rigdzin Chvkyi Dragpa. These instructions
explain the practices of recognizing dreams, emanating in dreams,
transforming dreams, abandoning fear in dreams, training in illusions,
training in pure realms, mixing with the appearances of the daytime, and
ultimately training in the suchness or ultimate nature of dreams. The
practice of dream yoga in this context teaches one how to utilize the path
of the throat chakra in order to gain mastery over the dream state. It is
taught that if one gains mastery over dreams it is a sign that one will also
have mastery over the bardo, the state between death and rebirth. Thus, the
practice of dream yoga is explained to be extremely important.
Time: 2:30-5 & 7-9 PM
Sug. Don. $60

Saturday-Monday, September 12-14
Vajrayogini Empowerment & Teachings

Drubpon Rinchen Dorje will be bestowing the empowerment of the Vajrayogini
of the Two Truths. This particular empowerment of Vajrayogini in the Drigung
Kagy| lineage comes from a unique tradition. It combines two different
lineages of the Vajrayogini which arose in ancient India. One stream of the
lineage originates with the Dakini Princess Lakshminkara, the sister of King
Indrabhuti. She is regarded as a direct manifestation of Vajrayogini
herself. This tradition became what was renowned in Tibet as the Chal
tradition of Vajrayogini. The second tradition comes from the mahasiddha
Tilopa. He is regarded as a direct manifestation of Chakrasamvara. This
tradition became what was renowned in Tibet as the Hearing Lineage of
Vajrayogini. These two streams merged within the Drigung Kagyu lineage and
have been transmitted as such for centuries.

Drubpon will then be giving teachings from a vast commentary and sadhana on
Vajrayogini entitled the Sea of Blessings of the Great Secret. This
commentary was composed at the end of the 19th century by the famous retreat
master of Drigung Thil known by the name of Kvnchog Chvkyab. In this
detailed commentary many of the subtle aspects of Vajrayogini practice are
explained. The commentary further elucidates the underlying ultimate meaning
of Vajrayogini, the divine metaphors embodied in her form, and contains pith
instructions on how to undertake her practice. This is a special opportunity
to receive such precious teachings from a retreat master who has practiced
these very instructions.

Drupon Rinchen Dorje Bio

Having great altruistic motivation for virtuous deeds from early childhood
in 1984 he entered Tana Monastery, receiving his vows as a novice (getsul)
monk from Tulku Nyendrak Gyaltsen Rinpoche. While helping with the
reconstruction of the Monastery, he received teachings on the Fivefold Path
of Mahamudra and Kunsang Lama's Words of Profound Instruction, Dzogchen's
Great Completion Parting from Samsara and Nirvana, Pointing Out the Nature
of Mind, and other teachings from Tulku Nyendrak Gyaltsen Rinpoche. Rinpoche
has also received Chakrasamvara according to Drilbupa, including the
empowerment, scriptural transmission, and pith instructions from Tulku
Thogme Rinpoche.

On his way to India he made a pilgrimage to the sacred Mount Kailash.
Tibetan Buddhists call the mountain Kang Rimpoche, the 'Precious One of
Glacial Snow', and regard it as the dwelling place of Demchog (also known as
Chakrasamvara) and his consort, Dorje Phagmo. In exile Drupon Dorje joined
the Drikung Kagyu Institute in 1993, and has received instruction in
philosophy, Gongchig, Theckchen Tenying, Dhagpo Thargyan, and Uttaratantra
from Khenchen Konchog Gyaltsen and other profound teachers of the Lineage.
In 1995 Drupon Dorje received full ordination (gelong) vows from His
Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche, and in the same year
accomplished the ngondro practices of Mahamudra and the grand mantra
recitation of Chakrasamvara. In 1996, he received initiation into the
Profound Path of the Six Yogas of Naropa.
Drupon Rinchen Dorje Rinpoche has completed two (2) three-year retreat
courses, one at Almora and one at Lachi, holy retreat place of the great
yogi, Milarepa.
He has received profound instructions too numerous to mention during these
retreats.

In 2005, he received the five-deities Hevajra according to Marpa's tradition
of empowerment, transmission and instructions from His Holiness the Drikung
Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche, and in 2006 he completed the grand mantra
recitation of glorious Hevajra's fire puja at the Almora retreat center.
Hence for his accomplishments he was awarded the title, Drupon, meaning
"Retreat Master."

Currently, Drupon Rinchen Dorje Rinpoche is the Resident Lama for both the
Drikung Kagyu Dharma Circle - Madison, Wisconsin and their sister sangha,
Chicago Ratna Shri. Drupon Rinchen Dorje will also be the retreat master for
the three year retreat that will be begining at the Garchen Institute in
January 2010.
