Hail!

An excellent site for Tolkien images is:
http://fan.theonering.net/rolozo/

You can also locate a few from the Valar Guild's Tolkien Encyclopedia
under Powers/Yavanna.

Aiya! The Tolkien Encyclopedia still needs your input: articles,
stories, poems, art, humor, translations, Tolkien book lists and
reviews. This is your chance to do input as a Tolkien fan.

Some of you are listed in our web pages as Tolkien-Valar members,
those who are interested in Tolkien and contributing to the
Encyclopedia but not in gaming. I am trying to update that web page
with which of you is still interested, but some emails are out of date
so I'm asking you here: Amanlathwen-(TV), Gandalf-(TV), Khaira-(TV),
Manik-(TV), and TJ-(TV). If you'd rather, you can email me at my new
address: varda.elentari@...

We also have Tolkien plus Gamers (full members) on this board. Be sure
you have been included for this year's list as well. An email to me
saying you are still in is enough. World of WarCraft is the new big
game we are branching into, using Lothar server. Auros is Eonwe's WoW
name as branch leader. I help out as Fainan. Use our guild's WoW page
or the main Forum under World of WarCraft to pick up more names for
your friend list.

For readers of the Discussion Board unfamiliar with the main guild,
you can join as a Tolkien-only member by sending in a contribution to
the Valar Guild's Tolkien Encyclopedia. I'm editor, so email it to me.
If it needs work, I can help you with it. Be sure to include
references from Tolkien. Web info is notoriously incorrect as it may
be from memory or the movies. If you are doing a movie-based
contribution, please say so.

Namarie,
Varda-(Valar)

Hi,
Galadriel is already related to Elrond even before his marriage to
Celebrian. Galadriel is from Finwe and Finarfin; and Elrond is from
Fingolfin, Idril, and Earendil. So, Galadriel is a grandaunt of
Elrond, which makes Celebrian, her daughter, an aunt of Elrond.

It is strange that Elrond got married to his aunt. And a similar,
though more distant, relation is when Aragorn is married to Arwen,
both being of the same line of Earendil.

    Any comments on this?

regards,
Kedar.

Aiya Kedar!
Here's a link that can help us make sense of this discussion:
http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/pix/treebw.jpg
Maybe only first cousins are barred from marriage?
To add to the fun, Aragorn and Arwen come through the two twin sons
of Earendil, so the DNA of Elrond and Elros would have been as if they
were the same person. If Elros hadn't gone human and mixed all those
many descendents between himself and Aragorn, Arwen and Aragorn really
would have been too close for marriage.
Galadriel of Valinor sems to be a major point of the mixing of blood
lines, so having her in the background is not bad on the inbreeding.
We can also assume that the very earliest elves would be very strong,
and that inbreeding among them would not be dangerous for the
offspring, even though they have a lot of major royalty the way
Galadriel does.
Galadriel is not far from the earliest elves, and even those are
mixed, giving her three of the Elf types. Her father, Finarfin, has
parents from two completely different types of Elves: Finwe is
Noldorin, Idril is a blonde Vanyarin. Her mother's father is Olwe of
the Teleri.
Elves lived so long, remaining youthful, that they didn't have a lot
of bloodlines to choose from, and could find elves of much different
age attractive. Ahh, the problems.
It is implied that not all the bloodlines are told to us. For
instance, the mothers are sometimes left unmentioned, so we can't see
where they come from. Whole lines are left out. For instance, who are
the relatives of Celeborn connecting to Oropher, Thranduil, and
Legolas? Surely Celeborn doesn't call just any other Sinda his
kinsman? The speculation is that Thranduil's line come through Elmo.
The lines may be more tangled than we know.

Note all associated links between the archetypes presented by Tolkien,
Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell. I think Tolkien grasps well the
variation of the male hero archetypes (there's not only one, and their
reward is determined by their quest). Not so sure about the female
heros--Varda?

Couldn't the same archetypes be applied to the heroines as well? That
could apply to the Heroic Quest as well: such as separation from the
family and tribal unit (Eowyn loses her parents and is taken in by
Theoden), the heroic quest, and the return with improvements that
benefit the original group.

The original topic, however, related to the Fellowship, which happened
to be all male, and what sort of rewards they received due to heroism,
whether intentional or not.

You might enjoy looking at the transcript of a discussion a few of us
had on that in the News for April 16, 2006, or just go straight to the
transcript's Tolkien section:
http://valarguild.org/varda/guild/transcripts/2006/tranApril16,06.htm#Tolkien

Would you care instead, or as well, to elaborate on how any of them
(or the ensemble as if it were one hero) fit into any of the
archetypes of heroes to which you alluded? From there, we could see
how they might also be applied to females. Maybe a hero by any other
name...? ;)

Hi, everyone! My name is David, and I'm new to the group.

I wanted to know if the group owners and members would allow me to
conduct a survey here. I'm asking Tolkien readers and film-goers to
explain what Tolkien means to them. I'm going to write an article or
two with the responses I get. Hopefully, I'll have enough material for
a book.

I don't want the survey to become disruptive, however. If doing this
would create too much traffic, I can either:

1) Post the survey, but ask participants to answer via e-mail, or
2) Ask people to request a survey by e-mail.

If anyone is interested, I can go into more detail about what I'm
doing. Thanks!

Tolkien gives us an alternate world good for:

Fellowship:
Caring, loyalty, friendship, enjoyment of other types of people than
oneself.

Sense of wonder:
Innovation, crafting of wondrous things, a beautiful environment with
many terrains and civilizations.

Making a difference:
The main sources of evil can be fought and destroyed.
Both the small and the great can make enormous contributions and work
together.

Hail!

The Valar Guild is still an active organization, although this Yahoo area
appears fairly deserted. I still keep an eye on it.

Our usual forum now may be reached from our main website of
http://valarguild.org by clicking the word "Forum".

The same place takes you to our still active Tolkien Site. You can find my
contact info under Community/Membership/Varda.

Our main game is Lord of the Rings Online, on Landroval server. You can send me
a mail in-game to my main character: Fainan
or put the name on your Friend list and give me a whisper:
/w Fainan Heya!

We also play some World of Warcraft. In the Americas, our Alliance server is
Lothar and our Horde server is Uldaman. In Europe, we have a less active group
on Argent Dawn.

On Sundays at 5pm EST a few of us meet on AIM at Valar Guild Meetingplace.
Meeting Transcripts are linked on the News page of our website.

May your days leave you content,
Varda

The Valar Guild is quite active still, even if not on this forum.

What do we do these days?

We continue to have AIM meetings every Sunday where we talk business and then
shift to Tolkien. Transcripts are online on the News under the Sunday Meeting.

We still add to the Tolkien Site and have a Games Site. Both are found under
http://valarguild.org

We game mostly in Lord of the Rings Online on Landroval server in the Americas
(internationals welcome!) and have a steady if small World of WarCraft guild in
the Americas on Lothar server for the Alliance. To experiment with Horde
characters we use Uldaman server.

My email is under News/Membership/Varda if you want to email to say say you're
active for 2011 or want to rejoin. Check the News page to see a bit of what's
going on. Also feel free to post your hello in the other Forum which is now the
current one, or weigh in on any of the topics there.

Namarie,
Varda
