These are luminous collection of quotes from an illiterate Persian
Sufi living some 1000 years ago. Sheikh Attar has preserved his
breakthrough words for generations to come.
Samples:
I have made peace with Allah's creation and never fought with people,
yet I have declared war upon my own Nafs (Self, Psyche) and I shall
never make peace with it.
A Nedaa (Calling) from Allah came: My slave! If you come to Me with
sorrow I shall give you happiness and if you come to Me with need I
shall enrich you, for as long as you wash your hands from your own
kind (have no hope of help from them) I shall subjugated the air and
the water (i.e. the entire creation) to your will.
There is no loving (for That Beloved) if even a little shameful
thought may appear within the mind that requires seeking forgiveness.
Muslims can be benefit from these words to rupture the chrysalis of
cliché habitual rituals and fly freely into the meanings behind them.
Non-Msulim Westerners can benefit by traversing beyond the false veil
of financial might and intoxicating consumerism into a station where
there is Hu and no one else.
