For those with an interest in applying for their Ancestral Citizenship……

I was born in SA, my parents too, my paternal Grandfather fled from Germany to
SA during the second WW.

I attempted to apply for my ancestral citizenship, through the German consulate
in South Africa, but without success I was turned away and told that it is not
possible!!

A few year later, I came across an advertisement that was placed in Die Beeld
newspaper, of a European company (www.ancestralcitizenship.org) claiming to
assist by applying for Ancestral Citizenship.

I applied accordingly, and followed the procedures as indicated by them, with
much determination, I successfully reached my objective ! !

And now… I am a naturalized German national, residing in Germany, my two under
aged children obtained their German nationality, based on mine. We were also
allowed to retain our South African citizenship. Our life completely changed
for the better. Only the possibilities for my children, here in Europe and the
safety here, was worth every effort !

There are numerous genealogy sites out there that feature an assortment of
articles on documentation of records for doing your genealogy search. We will
look at how genealogy sites and the tools they offer will assist you to carry on
a search.
Genealogy sites have plenty of tools that you use to keep records of your
searches, but keeping records is not enough. You must know where to search next
once you have found that piece of information that you are looking for.
Genealogists usually draw conclusions from their records, to continue to dig
deeper into the roots of their ancestry, which is often referred to as and audit
trail.
An 'audit trail' requires that the thought process and analysis be included by
documenting sources. Genealogy sites generally offer some software that is
capable of analysing the data and there are services from expert genealogists.
The fees from experts vary from site to site, but they are not always needed
unless you get stuck and cannot find the additional information that you are
looking for in your search or if you cannot go any further on your own.
There are many purposes for an audit trail but one of the main reasons is for
subsequent searches to obtain the records that were used and see how the initial
researcher came to their conclusions. Keeping records is very important, along
with maintaining them in a secure and good condition.
Suggestions for making an audit trail
When you make an assumption, clearly state why you came to the conclusion and
any other information that could be useful. This can be the on the front page of
your record and can be edited at anytime, remember that new information changes
the search direction.
By learning any historical background of the time period and region, will allow
you to have a better of idea of what direction may be the next direction to head
in. Most genealogy sites offer this information to you for this purpose.
Learn as much information as you can about your ancestors, such as how they
lived, their culture and any other relevant information that will help guide you
in your search.
Cite your sources, as this can lead you back to the information you need, or may
add additional information for future searches that are completed.
Writing notes in detail will make it easier for people who carry on your work in
the future. This will allow them to see your thought process.
Make sure that you information is as accurate as possible, do not jump to
conclusions.
You can make the search nearly effortless, by leaving and audit trail which
allows you or others to carry on the search easily.

The first time you download software to help you build your family tree is a
very exciting moment. You have begun on a journey that will take you right back
in history, through social, political and economic ups and downs and you will
find out a lot about how your ancestors coped with life in their times. This
will give you an invaluable sense of your own family history and how you came to
be the person you are today - your genetic and psychological inheritance will be
obvious for the first time. People whom you've never ever heard of like your
great, great, great grandparents are the reason why you are on earth right now.
In the past records of individuals were kept on microfilm and stored in
archives. Now, thanks to a lot of hard work and the increasing interest in our
roots much of this film has now been transferred to the internet and can be
found in online databases. The members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter
Day Saints were the major collectors of family trees as this is part of their
religious beliefs and their records are a wonderful starting point for research
for many people. As well as the records of the Mormons there are other excellent
sources to find surnames and track old relations.
Newspapers are an example, as they contain articles and obituaries about a huge
range of people, many of whom are likely to be related to you from bygone times.
Cemeteries, church records, local census results are also sources of invaluable
information.
All of this information can be put into software created especially for this
purpose and this will make your job much easier in the long run. You can scan
documents which have been moldering in old trucks and boxes in your relatives
attics and keep them safely in electronic format from here on in. If you record
some of your older relatives as they talk about the family and the people they
remember from their childhood you can also store this online or electronically
on your PC. Precious memories will be captured forever this way that otherwise
would have been lost with that person's death.
There are even free genealogy search engines you can use. These only need
surname, name, and/or geographic location of your family members to throw up
some records to get you going. You will also meet up with other people online
who are looking into the same family name - long lost cousins from the other
side of the world can connect and find great pleasure in sharing their findings.
For genealogists, online research for resources is invaluable, it cuts the costs
and time and they can find a whole bunch of facts at the click of a button.

What a rewarding hobby it can be to research your family tree. You have your
starting point with your grand parents who unfortunately are no longer with us,
but you feel sure your family would love to discover their heritage. However,
for some reason your mother seems reluctant to discuss the family. Strange?
Perhaps, but you put it down to the fact your mother is 70 now and a little too
old for new tricks and technology.
You manage, after some time and money, to track dear old Granny and Grandpa down
to where they were born and where they lived in the 1901 census. Edinburgh? Well
I never knew that, you think. And so you decide to push back a little further
and see what your great grandparents were all about. Still your mother has only
vague recollections and cannot add anything to your research. That is okay
though, we have records and technology to help us along.
Hurrah! I've found my great grandmother! She went by the name of Isabella and
was born a McDonald in 1864. She then married my great grandfather, John Graham
in 1887. Well that all seems in order, he was a railway clerk which doesn't
sound too impressive but that's okay it could be worse.
And yes, it sure could be worse. You notice something very odd about the
marriage entry in the register. Isabella has two parents but poor old John only
had a mother. Must be a clerical error or perhaps his father had died? He should
still have been on the certificate though.
So off you go to see your mother and explain this strange occurrence. She seems
flustered and assures you that you shouldn't waste your valuable time on the
past. I start to smell a rat at this point and hot foot it home to log onto my
pc.
I find John's birth entry in 1862. Oops, there is no father on there either. And
what is that large capital "B" in the margin? The penny drops. No wonder why my
mother was so cagey. I guess it was a big disgrace in those days but seems too
commonplace these days to worry about.
Anyway, so my great grandfather John was born out of wedlock. I took great
delight in joking with my mother about it and it was the topic of the Christmas
dinner table! Since then I've found a bigamist, 3 more illegitimate and a
suicide! Think I'll save those for the Easter dinner table....

Are You Canadian and Wondering About Your Genealogy?
If you are a Canadian and are wondering about your genealogy, there are
wonderful sources online to learn more about your ancestors. You don't have to
look any farther than the internet which offers a wide spectrum of data for you
to peruse. Some internet sites were created to provide you a useful resource
tool for tracing your family roots.
How To Use This Wonderful Tool
You can use the internet for searching genealogy which can amply supply you with
a large database of information for you to search. It is wonderful that
resourceful individuals have taken the time to upload governmental documents
that were kept intact by libraries worldwide. Utmost care has been taken to
preserve the integrity of these records and much time spent uploading them for
worldwide use.
What Are You Searching For?
Whether you are searching for information such as someone's date of birth or
origin of birth, a death certificate or any other official record, some sources
have a database that includes such information between the late 1700s and the
mid-1800s. An added bonus is the petitions for land ownership which was quite
common during this time in history and would be quite valuable if you are a
Canadian creating your family tree on your family chart. You may also find
military records containing lists of those who were court-martialed in World War
I and other wars should you decide to delve deeper. Another essential element is
obituaries listed as news items in newspapers of the time which would be a
valuable gold-mine of a find. Some census records can be found from the
mid-1800s to the early 1900s if you know your kin's birth, sex, or age, marital
status or job occupation during that period of history. Some records have been
intact, while others did not survive. Good hunting!

In the past, building your family tree has involved tediously mapping the whole
process by hand on paper. Very often, people became so overwhelmed by the whole
process that they simply gave up. Often if they hit just one snag, it is an
excuse to surrender. There are so many unfinished genealogy projects out there,
just waiting to be finished!
It's now time however for these people, or their offspring, to take up the
challenge again! With the help of computers and the internet, it has become so
easy for them to map their family trees using online websites and software
devoted specifically to genealogy buffs.
Finding who should be part of your family tree is only part of the process.
You'll see that you're able to trace many more distant relatives if decide to
host your ancestry on the Internet where a worldwide audience can find you.
Most genealogy websites will have similar features - variations on the same
theme, and you should not have to pay a fortune for access to these. Of course,
you'll find that some sites have more designer tools that allow you to add more
depth to your family tree than the usual style of a branch with text.
The family tree websites that will be best for you will be those that combine
the features you need, and which minimize the amount of outside research that
required. To illustrate, some will have blogs you can use, areas to post
pictures, and chat rooms in which you can gather for an instant online family
tree reunion.
If you are starting from scratch, it's ideal to start with your immediate family
and grow your roots from there. It can often take some time to go back through
the generations. Online tools make the process much simpler than in earlier
times, and storing your information online at a genealogical website lets
everyone share in the treasure you're creating.
And quite often this will lead to some surprising results. When people who are
tracking down their roots realize that somehow they're connected to you, they
might just contact you and get added to a branch of their own on your family
tree website.
Families nowadays are spread across counties, states and countries, and as a
result can find planning a reunion that everyone can attend impossible. By using
a family tree website, you can keep in touch, plan events, and share memories
and stories with all of your family in one central gathering place - hold a
Virtual Reunion!
Having an online family tree can help everyone enjoy the closeness of family on
their own schedule, by logging in and participating to keep in touch from
wherever they are in the world.
Before purchasing any offline family tree keepsake, consider the options you
have for technology-driven treasures and their benefits that will make research
easier, hasten the process and deliver better results for your family.

Have you ever wondered how the tradition of giving wedding anniversary gifts
began? It is said that the earliest wedding anniversary gifts were silver
garlands given by Germanic husbands to their wives on the 25th anniversary.
History also shows that some European countries celebrated half of that time,
12.5 years of marriage, with gifts of copper. Around 1875, wood seems to have
come into vogue as a 5th wedding anniversary gift.
Wedding anniversary gifts by mail were undoubtedly rare in those days. The
postal service itself was unreliable. Couples who wanted to celebrate their
marriage by giving one another gifts often had to choose between making gifts or
purchasing at the general store.
Times have changed dramatically, and we now can not only purchase wedding
anniversary gifts by mail, we can order them electronically on the Internet.
My bump of curiosity stirred a desire today to see what was available. Here are
the first seven anniversary gifts I found.

Discovering your Family Tree is becoming one of the fastest growing hobbies as
more and more of us are inspired to trace our Family Trees. Genealogy, or
discovering your family tree, can be a fun and valuable hobby. You will start to
learn where you come from and what your family history is all about. You may
also discover that your family played a role in historical events and you will
certainly discover what impact historical events had on your family.
The hardest part of getting into genealogy for a lot of people is getting
started. They just don't seem to have direction or an idea of how to get going
with their research. The best way to get started is actually by getting four
things set so that the process is easier. Make sure you have a plan, keep track
of a goal, have wide goals, and develop a set of methods that suits you best.
The best first step to take in genealogy is to make sure you have some sort of
idea where you want to go. You will have to set a goal so that no matter what
you do online or in the library you are always focused on your goal. If you
constantly review your information and goals, you will be able to make sure you
are always headed in a direction that will aid you in achieving your genealogy
goals. The goal doesn't have to be complex, just make sure you have something in
mind that will help you find your way through your family tree and will keep you
focused....

Nominated for 13 Emmys and 8 Golden Globes, The Jeffersons was a
groundbreaking situation comedy that was not only utterly hilarious,
but also explored the controversial social issues of its day.
Premiering in mid-season 1975, the show was a spin-off of the #1 hit
series All In The Family, where main characters George and Louise
were the next-door neighbors of Archie and Edith Bunker. During its
nine-season run, The Jeffersons spent all but its last season as a
Top 25 Nielsen rated show. One of the first sitcoms to center
exclusively around the lives of African-Americans, The Jeffersons
most likely featured television's first interracial married couple in
Tom and Helen Willis. It was this fearless attempt to push the
boundaries of the status quo that made the show one of the funniest
of its time as well as a valuable resource for American race
relations...
The Jeffersons follows the lives of George (Sherman Hemsley) and
Louise Jefferson (Isabel Sanford), a middle-aged African-American
couple who own a string of successful dry cleaning stores. The
windfall generated by their business paves the way for George and
Louise to "move on up" into an exclusive Park Avenue apartment. The
series is made by Hemsley's portrayal of the stubborn and greedy, yet
quite lovable, character of George whose sarcasm and antics are only
equaled by the Jeffersons' quick witted live-in maid Florence (Marla
Gibbs). A supporting cast composed of omni-present neighbors Tom
(Franklin Cover) and Helen Willis (Roxie Roker), the ever-polite
Bentley (Paul Benedict), and a tip-grubbing doorman named Ralph (Ned
Wertimer) provide for endless sources of irritation and annoyance for
George. Throw in George's mother (Zara Cully) and her constant
insults of Louise, and The Jeffersons becomes one of the best-written
humorous shows of its time......

You never met them, but without them you wouldn't be here. They're
your ancestors; those long-forgotten people whose lives were so
different, yet so similar, to yours today.
Why study these people who are long gone and buried? Well, think
about it. If just one of the thousands of your direct ancestors
didn't exist, you wouldn't either. If your great-great-great-great-
great-grandmother never met your great-great-great-great-great-
grandfather, your significant other would never have met you because,
well, you wouldn't be alive.
Besides honoring the significance of your ancestors, studying your
family's genealogy can just be plain fascinating. There are so many
things you can learn, such as why you or your parents grew up on one
location or another. For example, if one of your ancestors was a
Hessian soldier used by the British to fight the American colonists,
you might find some relatives living in Pennsylvania, which had a
large population of German-Americans, many of them Hessian soldiers
who deserted the British and later fought for the Americans. Many of
their descendants later moved to Ohio....

Tackling a genealogy project can be quite a daunting task if you do
not know where to start and how to arrange the multitude of facts
that you will uncover during your genealogy journey. Genealogy
software has give the average enthusiast a platform to work with and
created a solution to the problem of putting all your information in
a chronological and understandable order.
Genealogy software can setup charts and graphs so you can easily
identify your ancestors linage at a glance and organise that
information into an easily followed manner. With ancestor charts you
can identify how far back your linage goes. Family charts go hand in
hand with ancestor charts as they show your entire family, their
children, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and of course how you fit in
via your mother and father.
Most genealogy software programs are programmed with a host of
organisational tools to simplify the whole process of linking family
members, creating family trees and grouping them into various sub
categorised family trees. Tools to show and help you to discover
vital information that will ultimately enable you to have an accurate
representation of all family members and how they are all
interrelated....

Subject: Naming Them
dvatmqfmjnci

I kept my name when I married in 1995. I never expected that a choice
about so small a matter would cause much commotion, and it didn't,
not much. I did have a couple of people ask me if I respected
marriage (yes, so much so that I wish it were an option available to
all my friends), my husband (sometimes), etc. and I did experience
the obligatory chilliness about it from certain conservative
relations. I also got some trouble from the phone company about our
listing. On the whole, though, keeping my own last name did not seem
like a very big deal.
Then my daughter was born.
As we awaited her arrival, my husband and I considered many
possibilities when it came to a last name for our daughter. We had a
name agreement that involved me naming all girls and him naming all
boys, so the choice was mine, but I wanted us both to be happy with
that choice. A part of me does think that patrilineage is a patently
stupid custom. Even if it were not for the sexism inherent in such a
practice, it seems like a mighty uncertain way to track a family
tree. When a baby is born, everyone knows who gave birth to it -
paternity is often not so cut and dried. Still, it is not as if some
of the reason for giving children their fathers' names was not due to
that very concern - to protect a child's claim on a man and what he
could provide for the child. And it was not like I wasn't well aware
that such issues could still hold relevance in my child's life at
some point in the future, so I was not entirely sure that I wanted to
turn my back on that little evolutionary nudge. I wasn't sure that I
didn't want to, either, though. My husband and I definitely
considered the option of a hyphenated last name, both of our names,
but the hyphenated last name option really only makes sense until you
start thinking about when the hyphenated child has children. If
little Boone-Thomas wants to reproduce with Mussey-Hitt
someday...well, what about their children? It gets crazy pretty fast.
There are plenty of other options to consider and we considered many
of them, but, in the end, I just gave her my husband's last name. It
seemed like the easiest thing at the time and I had a lot of other
things with which to occupy my mental energy....

Subject: What is an Obituary?

As much as you love someone, recalling the details of their life at
the time of their death is an overwhelming responsibility. For
someone close to the person dying, writing an obituary is comforting
by remembering the defining moments of an individual's life may bring
comfort. Having the obituary already written and on file with your
funeral provider, is not as difficult to do as you may think.
What is an obituary?
An obituary can be a very personal look at a life. It need not only
be a summation of the public facts, but a glimpse of the uniqueness,
when combined with those "facts," created a personality. Written by
someone who is close to you, an obituary becomes an intimate view of
what made you memorable to others. Written by you, it becomes your
personal life's story. One detail that often escapes even the most
thorough planner is to write an obituary. Writing an obituary is
another thing, that can be taken care of in advance.
How to write an obituary?
Writing an obituary is often helpful when someone close has died or
may be dying. An obituary can be as basic as containing only public
facts about a person's life like their birth, family tree, their
death. One can also include the persons photograph along with the
vocational and personal interests he was involved with when alive.
Through an obituary one can also relate your thoughts, experiences
and memories with them. An obituary also contains a list of immediate
survivors like children, grandchildren, spouse or siblings who were
closely associated with the deceased. As an obituary also serves as a
notification that an individual has passed away, it is best to check
with the newspaper services if they have space. Composing the
obituary has to be carefully done as it needs to appear few days
prior to the memorial service....

Subject: What is Your Hair Type?

Everyday you see people with all color and style of hair. But did you
know that you have a hair type? Yes! Not all hair has been created
the same.
Lets start with the basic structure of hair:
1) Hair grows from the follicle, which is long and bulbous. If you
were to pull out a strand of hair you would see the bulge at the tip
of the hair. The cells at the base of the follicle divide rapidly and
is where you get your hair growth.
2) Each strand of hair consists of three layers, the first being the
innermost layer called the medulla. This is only present though in
thick hair though.
3) The middle layer is known as the cortex. This layer provides the
strength, color and texture of your hair.
4) The outer most layer is called the cuticle and this is what
protects the cortex. It is completely colorless.
5) The entire strand of hair is made up of a protein called keratin.
And that is hair!
There are 2 basic kinds of hair:
1) Terminal hair is the hair that grows thick and long and is found
on the head, armpits, pubic hair face and chest. (Face and chest on
men)...

Subject: Digging Up Your Family Roots: Intermediate Level (Part II)
dvatmqfmjnci
Offline Offline

You've begun delving into your family history. You've already filled in
all the names of your great-grandparents on your family tree. You've
begun collecting the legal documents that record the milestones of your
ancestors' lives: birth, marriage and death certificates. You've even
located your family in a few census records. But before you push
further back, why not stop and really get to know these people? After
all, that's the purpose of tracing your family roots: knowing more
about your ancestors.
If you have names, dates and records through your great-grandparents,
you have fifteen lineal ancestors to get to know, both living and dead.
To get to know your deceased ancestors better, you have to dig deeper
on the paper trail. To better acquaint yourself with your living
ancestors, start conducting oral history interviews. Both of these
techniques are explained in more depth in this set of articles. Part
one discussed digging deeper on the paper trail, while part two is an
introduction to conducting oral history interviews....
