I probably shouldn't go here, but I have a question. Why do authors pull
fanfiction from the internet? I am always disheartened when I decide to read
something I haven't read in a long time, only to find it no longer exists. Is
it that people get published, and when they are in the height of fame, they
don't want anyone pulling out their early writings? Do they move on, and since
they are no longer in fandom think their stories should go with them? Please
enlighten me.

I know the question of whether or not they should do it has come up in the past
and inspires heated debate. I don't intend for that to happen, I was just
curious as to the reasons that people decide to remove their work so I know
whether to be sympathetic with them or annoyed. :)

Thanks!

Not being a writer, I'm not sure that I should comment, but I suppose that a writer may consider their early work, no longer represents who they are now. The Ladyofthemasque AKA Jean Johnson, hasn't removed any of her work, and still answers reviews, I guess others don't have her confidence, and want to distance themselves, from Fan-Fic. Personally, I would be devastated if some of my favourite authors {Dracontia, TeddyRadiator,HBAR, The Consequences of Bedroom Quidditch had me giggling for days}. I'm sure there are many reasons why an author pulls his/her writings. One that comes to mind is if a writer lands a publishing contract, it is quite possible that the publisher will ask them to remove any fanfic available on the internet. This is especially true for those writing original fic aimed at young adults while their fanfic was at least romance if not erotica.
Some writers leave the fandom and simply decide it's time for a clean break, so they remove any connection with their previous fandom, including fanfic.
I'm sure there are a gazillion other reasons.

No, I don't think so. I think the reason a YA publisher would ask an author of erotic fanfic to pull it off the net is mostly because young adults today are savvy when it comes to the internet, and if one finds out that his/her latest favourite author has written erotic fanfic, it might turn into a scandal.

Thanks, Karelia, that makes sense. I just don't happen to personally know any
of the folks who have disappeared, so I wondered if it was typically a
publishing thing or what. I think that sucks, but I totally understand why it
happens, and I don't fault anyone for doing so. For everyone else, if people
pull their stuff for whatever reason, that is their prerogative. I just always
like it when people can look back at their older works and appreciate how far
they have come as an author, rather than cringing and making it disappear.
Especially if it/they were well liked.

So, instead of making frowny faces when stuff goes away, I will instead assume
the best and silently congratulate them on becoming a professional. :)

While it's frustrating, as a fan of {insert favorite author here} I can empathize and support their decisions to leave the fandom and/or remove their fics. They took the hours to write, without pay, gems that entertained and enriched the Harry Potter fandom.

The only thing that tickles my pickle is when said authors go further and expect saved fics to be deleted and/or not shared among one another. But that's a WHOLE other can of worms so I'll stop XD

I was told of a situation where the sexual content of a writer's work caused problems in her family when it became known she was writing it, and to bring peace to the family she pulled everything and left the fandom.  This happened before I was reading fanfic so it's just hearsay, but I can see that might happen.

A lot of fanfic explores kinks.  Kinks are not always understood in the real world. I can see this happening very easily.

Thanks for the response. That's awful, but I can see it happening. I just
wondered because it seems like lately, every time I think of a story to
recommend, I go to find the link and it is missing. I'm sure it is coincidence,
but it happened several times in a row, and I started to wonder if there was
some sort serial killer preying on fanfic writers and everyone was protecting
themselves. :)

I have to agree with you about favorite authors and stories disappearing.  I also have to agree about LOTM.  Her fanfiction is wonderful and so are her original works, especially the 'Sons of Destiny' series.

Do you, or anyone else out there, know of a site that might have fanfiction of hers beyond what is found on RestrictedSection.org?

Also, does anyone know of a downloader that works on RS.org?  So far, I can only download one chapter at a time and it's a big, fat pain!

Thanks,

LOTM has 37 stories listed on TPP. I don't know if that's all of the fanfic she's written, but it seems like a fair bit of pleasure reading there:

http://thepetulantpoetess.com/viewuser.php?uid=119

If you choose the 'print chapter' option, you can easily put together a .doc or some such of the entire fic and then convert it to a format of your choice.
