Please join me for a live chat tonihgt from 7-8 EST on the Eternal Press website
www.eternalpress.ca to celebreate the release of my sci-fi horror story - Day
94. Check out my website at www.dm-slate.com to learn more about the book.

Excerpt:

I sit awake in the solitude of my basement next to the wavering light of our
last candle. The windows have been boarded tightly shut, blocking any trace of
light. The small fire is our only source of heat. My children are asleep
several feet away; it's comforting knowing they're safe, for now. In the
silence of the night it's easy to reminisce about the life we lived, not-so-long
ago. Things changed so rapidly. It feels like an eternity that we've been
barricaded inside our house.

I close my eyes to welcome sleep, but visions of the past three months play in
my head like a marathon of madness. I open my eyes and glance down at the
journal in my lap. To me it means the world; it's our story of survival. The
notebook's open, and I stare down at the blank page. The only writing is the
heading at the top – Day 94. My heart aches as I wonder how many more entries
I'll be able to make. I frown as I flip back to page one and reminisce about the
day of impact.

It started out like any other day. I woke up, got Grant and the kids up, then
flipped on the TV. The breaking news was about a missile that the US government
deployed to break apart the large meteor headed towards earth. I'd heard about
the meteor a lot over the past few days, and of the several foiled attempts to
redirect the path of the object. As a last resort the army decided to launch a
highly explosive missile to break apart the large rock. The missile impacted
just off-center, fragmenting the large meteor into five smaller pieces.

Four fragments were small and insignificant, but there was still one large chunk
remaining. Scientists insisted the sheering of the rock as it entered the
atmosphere would incinerate the last remaining threat. Viewers were told to
look in the eastern sky at 1:00 in the afternoon, and they might catch a glimpse
of the deterioration process as it happened. We went about our business, paying
it no more attention than that. What a mistake that proved to be.

Is that an uncut, re-edited,or larger print version? I know some fo the editions
had what came very close to microtype, depending on the publisher. Can't tell
you which publisher, though, since I never really paid attention to such details
till about a decade or so ago.

Hi there! I'm pretty new to this group; I LOVE sci-fi, fantasy & horror, and I LOVE to laugh...
I'm not too current on new genre films these days; I tend to wait 6 months or a year and see everything on DVD, even the stuff I'm dying to see... so much good genre film coming out these days, and lately the budget's been a bit tight for goin' to the cinny...
I have an artist page at
http://dogknob.com/dxs/
if you'd like to check out some of my work; I've been painting for 20+ years, and doing digital work for nearly a decade.
I'm also a writer―but that's a whole 'nother story.
Currently I happen to be rereading (with great pleasure) Robert Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land―though it's actually a first read of the 1991 Ace/Putnam uncut version, which is almost 50% fatter than the old classic!
I'm lovin' it... it's been far too long; I missed those characters quite a bit, I find...
Anyways, just wanted to say hi... hope I'll meet some cool people here...
Happy Thanksgiving, y'all!
D

BACKSTORY:

On the edge of a cliff waiting to be met by emissaries from Lord Cyrcosa,
Gwyneth, Galduric and Brith are preparing to be transported to Calcareous Island
the home of Cyrcosa the sea dragon.

EXCERPT:

Galduric called out a strange chant in a curious and exotic language which
sounded somehow familiar. Familiar? Why should that be? Gwyneth watched Galduric
make some curious gestures coupled with the words of odd chant. Then she sensed
the results.

There came a shimmering boom, but not like thunder at all. This burst of sound
staggered the senses almost as if a series of thunder strikes went off five or
six times in a row. Shadows from the darkness moved relentlessly toward them.
Bat-like shadows dropped straight from the starry heavens. She wanted to be
frightened, yet she wasn't. Why was that? Maybe it was Galduric's drug.

Brith’s eyes went wide. "There's something in the air!" She turned and tried
to run, but she'd managed only a step away when Galduric touched her lightly on
the shoulder and gently commanded her to stop. Not knowing why, Brith halted.

"Something's up there!" Brith pointed to the heavens.

"That's right, Brith," Galduric murmured in a soft singing lilt voice. "But you
are safe. You are perfectly safe standing here with Gwyneth and me. Your
breathing is calm and normal. Your muscles are relaxed. Neither heat nor cold
bothers you any more. You are perfectly content to watch these sky creatures fly
down to land close to us. The sight of these creatures is a special treat for a
human being. No one has ever seen anything quite like them before. Stand still
and watch as they land."

Possibly the ugliest creatures Gwyneth had ever seen, this pair of byakee were
some sort of pseudo-humanoid shaped bat-winged creature with webbed talons and a
foxbat head which seemed to mask human attributes as well.

"These things..." She spun around to shout at Galduric. "They'll kill us!"

"Shh, Gwyn," Galduric shifted his soothing, lilting tone to Gwyneth. "Easy. You
are safe with us here. These Byakee will obey my every command. They are
creatures from the stars that have come to help you fly far away from your
terrors. Come, each of you take my hand."

Softly, gently Prince Galduric explained that Cyrcosa managed to deploy only two
Byakee to transport their party. These inhuman servants would fly Gwyneth and
Brith over to the island of Calcareous first. He informed them that he would be
flying over afterward as Cyrcosa could only provide enough Byakees for the two
women. Then out of his traveling tent, he produced two leather harnesses with
reigns much like the horns of a ram.

"How could Cyrcosa control beasts like these?" Gwyneth asked.

"That's one of the advantages to being Elderborn. However, do not refer to them
as beasts. They are intelligent. "

"Are they demons?" Brith asked in a hushed whisper.

"They are emissaries from the stars." Galduric took hold of Brith's hand.
Gently, he steered her toward one of them. "Servants of
He-Who-Is-Not-To-Be-Named. "

"I don't understand." Brith paled as she approached the one closest to her.

"You don't have to understand," Galduric wrapped Brith's torso carefully with
leather straps and buckled fittings. "Just make sure you hang on tight to these
yoke handles. We don't want you falling off."

Then my work for the moment is done. ;-) You're welcome.

Although now that's palnted the idea for a little horror piece dealing with
budding... individuals now. I suppose it can also be blamed on _Dog Soldiers_,
which I watched last week. Amazing, the diversions your mind engages, when
you're at an impasse on a project.

Hi all,

It's been three years since the Courting Morpheus anthology was
conceived, two since it was supposed to be in print and has been through
two publishers. Finally, Courting Morpheus is being published!

Featuring stories by Geoffrey Girard, Camille Alexa, and Louise Bohmer,
a novelette by Rowan Gant Investigations author M.R. Sellars and
introduction by Alethea Kontis, Courting Morpheus is a collection of 13
stories centered on the writing/artistic community in the town of New
Bedlam.

Insomnia plagues the townspeople, and the monsters they usually contain
within the pages of their books are now loose on the streets. Morpheus,
the god of dreams, takes his revenge on those that make their living
from their nightmares.

"Courting Morpheus is a creepy anthology filled with a lot of strange
new voices shouting from the graveyard. It tears through genre walls
and mingles horror, humor, and spec fic into a chimerical collection of
chills.."
-Jonathan Maberry –multiple Bram Stoker Award winning author of PATIENT
ZERO and ZOMBIE CSU: The Forensics of the Living Dead

"A small town full of horror writers where nightmares come to life? What
a concept! And Counting Morpheus delivers. From 'What You Know' to 'The
Word Inside,' this is some impressive collection. New Bedlam is one
place you don't want to call home."
-Nate Kenyon, author of Bloodstone and The Reach.

Considering the random nature of a jewel's creation, It may as well be a

I bet you always wondered why dragons are attracted to jewels? In the following
excerpt from novel Phlogiston published by Aspen Mountain Press, I offer my
explanation.

SET UP -- Master Scholar Heufric, his Apprentic Gwyneth and the Merchant Prince
Galduric are discussing what must be done to gain an appointment to question
four Fyredammes in their own lair.

EXCERPT:

"It's my understanding that you'd prefer to keep your visit to [The Dragon
Queen]Smothurl and her brood under wraps until you're fully prepared, is that
not correct?" He waited until both scholars inclined their heads in agreement.
"In that case, I'll explain to both of you what we must obtain in order to
secure you an audience at Ignispecus. First we must secure a jewel of
significant size and interest for a discerning fyredamme."

"A what?" Master Heufric coughed, cleared his throat. "At what expense? I'm
not sure his lordship would allow--"

"His lordship's thriftiness is well known throughout Cymru. No, the jewel I
have in mind for our needs must either be obtained by barter or possibly
purloined."

"I see." Gwyneth brightened with a flash of understanding. "So in the latter
case an escort would--let us say--slow us down."

Prince Galduric bowed slightly to the apprentice. "Precisely."

"You know, I don't understand this desire which firedrakes have for jeweled
baubles," Heufric sat on a nearby bench and began to massage his foot. "You'd
think that dragons would be beyond collecting pretty trinkets."

"You are absolutely right in one sense, master scholar; we are not talking about
a desire for pretty trinkets." Galduric opened a locked drawer inside of a
cabinet. "You see in classic dragon lore every jewel has a story locked within
it. But only a dragon knows how to read the tale within the jewel. The bigger,
more precious and more aged the jewel, the longer, more philosophically and more
spiritually fulfilling is the story told within it."

"Do you mean it's like some Drakonian mixture of great literature and ancient
proverbs?" Heufric Gwaed marveled over this new possibility.

"Something like that--throwing in the occasional apocalyptic prophecy." Galduric
rummaged through the drawer. "You might call such a jewel the ultimate
den-warming gift. One thing for certain, it will demonstrate your sincerity
toward the fyredammes at Ignispecus."

"Dear me," Heufric remarked. "And I'd hoped we could get by with a roast boar,
some oyster stuffing, and a few cooked vegetables."

"They'd appreciate your humor, master scholar."

Prologue

Transcription of ABS Newscast, October 22nd, 2010.

Good evening. Tonight’s broadcast is unfortunately our last before the White House instills it’s new emergency broadcast plan forcing all media channels to transmit only emergency information as handled by local and national law enforcement.

In this, one of our most somber moments in all of human history, it’s important to remember our struggle as a species to survive. We are all human and while many human mistakes have been made to lead us into this predicament, that very humanity is what we strive to keep among this time of upheaval. We wish nothing more than the speedy recover of those infected with S5N2 virus and the swift return to the airways, however, in case this is our final broadcast, we feel as reporters, as survivors, and as people, we should remind everyone watching this program on how this current epidemic was spread for not only posterity reasons, but as a reminder that if we work together, we may overcome this.

In late 2009, barely a year ago, the United States was running short on vaccinations for the quickly spreading Swine Flu, or H1N1. In November 2009, the strain mutated to a highly contagious and particularly deadly form dubbed the “Super Flu” or H1N2, and the already low on supplies of vaccination lead to panic.

The inactivated vaccine, or typical flu shot, was not able to help the spread of this Super Flu. Instead, scientists relied heavily on the live, attenuated form of vaccine, which was administered via a nasal spray. Since most of the world relied on the shot, the already low supplies were decimated. The world’s leaders banded together and using fourteen former weapon manufacturing plants in Iran, China, Argentina, Russia and Britian, engineers were able to create working plants within months of their design, solely dedicated to creating the vaccine.

However, as we learned too late, the vaccination was created initially with a latent Simian Flu virus known to stimulate quick immune sterilization to several types of prevalent flus. These latent viruses normally lay dead, only there to help spark but within 90 days of receiving the flu over 90% of those immunized contracted an active version of the Simian Flu, known as S5N2. As public outrage grew, the United States lead a collection of allied militaries to seize the fourteen factories, where it was discovered that at least eight of them had been controlled by various terrorist organizations funded in part by the Iranian and Venezuelan governments. Immunizations stopped immediately, and shortly thereafter Vice President Joe Biden succumbed to the illness.

As confirmed only last week by President Hilary Clinton, sworn in after last week’s unfortunate murder of President Obama at the hands of infected civilians and the confirmation that both Robert Byrd and Nancy Pelosi have been missing for several weeks, it is now believed that the active strain of H5N2 was instead released in these inhalant vaccinations as a terrorist act. Reports of military action against the nations responsible are widespread, but the government will not comment.

Regardless of the responsibility of this outbreak, we are at war not with a nation, but with a disease. With any battle, knowing your enemy is crucial, which may be why this particular strain of virus is winning the struggle. Initially the Simian Virus was like any other flu, but the CDC in Atlanta warned us that this strain had never before been introduced into humans, and predicted unknown casualties and behaviors. Their prophecy was entirely too true, as the Simian Flu was took some characteristics of the rabies virus, causing a severe encephalitis after a few months of infection, even after the normal flu like symptoms had faded.

Those that contracted the disease felt better after a few weeks of flu therapy, but reported headaches, malaise and extreme fever in the following weeks. Eventually, as many of us have learned, those surviving these symptoms would then progress to a near animalistic state of mind, and those that were stable enough to communicate after this stage reported an intense hunger, especially for rare or uncooked meat, eventually progressing into a state of mania and hyperactivity, with hundreds of reported cases of cannibalism starting to spread. Those at the brink of this final breakdown have tried various homeopathic ways to stave off this disease, and early breakthroughs show that caffeine in extremely high doses may help slow the onset of these final and heartbreaking stages.

While whispers of terms like “zombies” and science fiction stories spread among a scared populace, scientists ensure us that while this epidemic has no known cure, it is still a disease. These infected humans are just that, still human, and our family, friends, neighbors. President Clinton has stated that while Marshall Law will be in effect immediately, citizens are not to take the lives of infected people except in cases of severe self-defense.

It remains unknown if the virus is indeed airborne as scientist fear, or if it only spreads through direct contact. Regardless, there is a mandatory nationwide curfew at dusk and all citizens that have symptoms are asked to turn themselves in at your nearest station; at this point it may be your only chance of survival.

So here we are at a crossroads in our history, of proportions that we perhaps cannot realize. We face untold hardships ahead, and trials that we cannot conceive. It is my personal belief that while the odds are stacked against us, we as a nation, and as a people, will see our way through this dark period and emerge victorious against these diseases and those that have attacked us.

To everyone listening to the sound of my voice, regardless of illness or injury, may God Bless you and all of us.

Good Night.

ODYSSEY WRITING WORKSHOP
ANNOUNCES LAUNCH OF ONLINE CLASSES

The Odyssey Writing Workshop, one of the most respected programs for
writers of fantasy, science fiction, and horror, is now offering writing
classes online.  Classes are designed for adult writers of fantasy,
science fiction, and horror.  Each class is focused on a particular
element of fiction writing and is designed for writers at a particular
skill level, from beginners to professional writers.  The application
period for the first class, Showing versus Telling, runs from October
10-December 10, 2009.  The class itself will be held from January
6-February 10, 2010.

Odyssey Director Jeanne Cavelos explains, "For fifteen years, Odyssey
has pursued its mission to help developing writers of fantasy, science
fiction, and horror improve their work by holding its annual six-week
workshop.  But we can only help sixteen writers each year at the
workshop.  We wanted to be able to help more writers.  So we've taken
the teaching techniques that are so effective at the workshop and
adapted them to create online classes.  We've worked very hard to ensure
that our online classes are of the same quality and caliber as our
in-person workshop and that they deserve to carry the name of Odyssey."

Unlike most online classes, Odyssey's Online Classes offer live lectures
and discussions using Web conferencing software.  At class time,
students call the class phone number and go to the appropriate Web site.
The instructor is live on the other end of the phone, giving the
lecture, and students' computer screens become the class blackboard,
where the instructor displays various examples and notes.  By clicking
on the appropriate icon, a student can raise his hand, use the phone to
ask a question, and listen to the questions of other students, who are
all on the same conference call.

Odyssey's Online Classes are rigorous and demanding, packing valuable
content into each session and providing assignments that challenge
students to take their writing to the next level. The classes provide
the tools and techniques students need to improve their writing, along
with feedback on their work that reveals whether they are successfully
using those tools and techniques.

Taking one of Odyssey's Online Classes is not equivalent to attending
the Odyssey Workshop, and should not be considered a substitute.  But
writers can improve through many different experiences, and for many,
attending a six-week in-person workshop is not possible.

Cavelos says, "If you're ready to hear about the weaknesses in your
writing and ready to work to overcome them, you'd be welcome to apply to
one of our online classes."  Classes provide a supportive yet
challenging, energizing atmosphere, with a class size limited to
fourteen students and close contact with the instructor.

The first class, Showing versus Telling, will be taught by Odyssey
Director Jeanne Cavelos.  Sessions will be held for one hour each week
for six weeks.  Tuition is $295.  More information is available at
www.odysseyworkshop.org or by e-mailing jcavelos@....

In addition, the Odyssey Web site, www.odysseyworkshop.org, offers many
resources for writers, including free podcasts, writing and publishing
tips, a weekly writing blog, and a critique service.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Thanks for helping to spread the word!

Best,

Jeanne

John stood at the grave, holding the shovel firmly with both hands. With a
strong thrust, he drove it into the dirt. "This ground isn't as hard as I
thought it would be," he said as he pushed the shovel down the second time.

What a relief for Andrea to know the task might be a little easier for him than
previously predicted. This meant John would carry through with his commitment.

He continued to dig while she held the light close to the gravesite. After
almost two hours she began to get tired and sat on the ground by the grave. She
had the lantern next to her and held the flashlight on the area. He had gone
down about three feet and squared it off as he dug deeper into the earth.

John looked at her. "It's getting deeper, and I think it's more like clay. Get
me the large pick, so I can break some of this up."

The cloud that had covered the moon moved and the lunar globe shone down once
again on the land, providing the much needed light. Shadows moved along the rows
of monuments in a rhythmical dance.

John took a break and joined Andrea on the blanket. "I don't think it will take
much more to reach the casket. I wonder what shape it's in after all these
years?"

Andrea grinned with surprise to hear John talk with some interest and curiosity.
"We'll find out when we get to it. I'm going to help you dig." She stood up and
walked over to the opening of the grave. Setting the shovel next to the grave,
she climbed down and then reached for the handle to drag it in with her so she
could start digging.

No longer were they concerned about where they were and what time of night it
was. The fear and anxiety of what they were doing had disappeared and been
replaced with a strong desire to get to the casket and open it.

Overwhelmed with excitement, Andrea liked the way John got into it. He had
stopped complaining. She'd been afraid that he'd give her a hard time throughout
the entire night but to her surprise—to the contrary. John went on actively with
this assignment.

Another hour passed, and Andrea's arms and back were beginning to hurt. John had
joined her with the pick to break up the soil as they dug deeper and deeper. She
stopped and put the shovel back up on ground level at the edge of the now opened
earth. "I have to rest, John," she said as she climbed out of the squared off
cavity. They had dug down about five feet and still hadn't reached the casket.

John needed a break also. He came to the blanket and sat next to her. She poured
a cup of coffee for them, and he held the cup up in the air and toasted her.
"Here's to my dear wife, who can get me to do anything." Then he just snickered
at her.

She didn't find that very funny, but she smiled and kept herself in a congenial
mood. On a more serious note, John began to question her. "What happens if we
find that this grave is empty? I just hope that there is a corpse in there, and
if there is what happens then, Andrea?"

"I don't know, John. If she's not there… Well, that means that something strange
happened to her. If she is in there, I guess I've been wrong about some things."

"That's right, Andrea. You agreed to move if we find this Anna's remains here,"
he said as he pointed to the grave. "I hope you live up to your agreement."

He wanted desperately for there to be a decomposed human found in there. He
didn't know what she'd really do if the coffin was empty, but he was almost sure
she'd want to go on looking into the life of this Anna Dickens woman. He tried
to talk to her. "You know this woman lived some hundred years ago. What more can
you learn about her?" He watched her facial expressions as he spoke. He could
see her getting upset with him, so he changed the subject. "Well, time to get
back to it." He stood and went to resume the dig. It was not a good time to talk
to Andrea that way.

The mound of dirt by the grave grew higher and higher. John would raise the
shovel high, and then thrust it down into the solid earth, deep into the grave
cavity.

A loud thud sounded from the open cavity and echoed through the lonely night.
John hit it again. This time he knew he had come upon something. He began to
work even faster. Once again, another loud thump.

"I think it's the casket. Come over here and hold the light up so I can see it
better."

She rushed over and shined the light from both flashlights down where he stood.
"Is it the casket?"

"I don't know. I think it is, but I have to clear away more of the dirt to take
a good look." He had excitement in his voice as he went on to instruct her to
continue to shine the light directly down where he worked shoveling. No question
about it—something there.

He scooped the loose soil up with the shovel and threw it out of the open grave
in quick, furious motions. They could hear the shovel scrape across what sounded
like a hard surface. At last the moment Andrea had been waiting for. Perhaps
minutes away until they would know one way or the other if Anna's remains were
buried in that grave.

His voice echoed in the night as he declared, "Yes, this is it. We hit the
casket."
