Oh I must've missed that. :-) Still for me it's not really enough to
shell out the cash. Plus I'd have to pay a bit extra for shipping,
since I live in the UK. What can I say, I'm a cheapskate.

Um, yes there will be special features. They will be limited
though. The DVDs will have character biographies and a "behind the
scenes" look that mainly covers the animation process. What exactly
it will be like is anyone's guess.

It's good to see the Raccoons finally getting a DVD release. It's
tragic there will be no extra features though. Imagine interviews
with the cast, Kevin Gillis, artists, etc. That would've been
great. :-(

So I think considering the no special features deal we're going to be
getting I'll just stick with my VHS tapes. I've got all the eps in
great quality condition so I don't really need the DVDs anyway.

I probably wouldn't hold out too much hope for deleted scenes, due once again to the studio's bankruptcy. Considering how tricky it's been to find animation cels from the series --despite there being 60 episodes-- I'd think it even less likely to see anything that ended up on the cutting room floor, especially this long after the fact. It's possible that a master tape might have something, but it's a pretty long shot.

For some reason the Morningstar link just yields an error when you try and visit it; the Amazon link doesn't tell much of anything about the DVD either. Some interesting info on the Lane site however, and hopefully this release is only the first of many. It'd be a shame if they were to limit DVD release to only those episodes that were produced earlier on VHS by Embassy and Children's Treasures (as so far seems to be the case). Then again, those were also the first several eps from Hinton I think... as these are, so hopefully that's the only reason they opted for this batch first.

Cheers (and there's much reason for it lately Justin!)

Matt

Any speculation on what those "behind the scenes" segments may be
that we'll see on the DVD release of the Raccoons?  The brief
description on the Morning Star Entertainment page only
said "animation process".  But what could this mean?  Maybe some
footage of the animation studio with the animators, writers, and
other creative staff producing the show?  Or maybe some brief
interviews with the original staff about their memories working on
the show?  Will we see Kevin Gillis?

It sounds good and all, but I wouldn't mind seeing some more special
features.  An audio commentary track with Gillis would be cool or
even an interview.  I'd love to actually hear his voice and have him
tell us all about the Raccoons and how he thought them up.  Or maybe
some deleted scenes would be a cool idea.  I know that it sometimes
does occur in animation that a work runs too long and they have to
trim it for broadcast on TV.  I'm sure that there may be deleted
scenes of the Raccoons out there that didn't make the final cut.
What could they be?  (Somehow I doubt that it would be Cyril Sneer
using a Richard Simmons robot against Bert, Ralph, and Melissa.)

Interesting question. :-) I always actually liked Bentley and Family.
With Bentley and Lisa, the writers could tackle some of the issues
that younger kids and teenagers go through, like the smoking episode.
That's a good one. And to me the best thing about Bentley and Lisa
was that they were fairly reaslitic, Bentley often whined and Lisa
wasn't always a goody two shoes who was all "Yes Ma'am" "Yes Sir"
with her parents. I liked that.

Really I don't see how they could've hurt the show...did the ratings
drop when those characters were brought it or something?

Cora.

This was prompted by one of the last posts, but I'd like to hear
more about this. When Bently Raccoon and his family actually moved
into the Evergreen Forest in 1990, do you think it was a good thing
or did it hurt the series?

Before then, Bentley was simply a visitor (making official
and "unofficial" visits), once bringing his sister along with him.
Neither of their parents, George or Nicole, visited, only appearing
in flashbacks. But could Bentley's actual living in the forest hurt
the show? The episodes of 1990-1991 did deal somewhat with Bentley
and Lisa, showing them adjusting to life and running into the
challenges of growing up (like bullies or peer pressure). But I
think that was a good thing. I doubt they stole the show from Bert
and friends, since they did play a role in helping them out with
their problems.

I'm sure most of you 20somethings know how precious time is. I really
miss having discussion on the Raccoons, and it seems that so much has
been going on since the last time I was able to post on the old
group. My only option is to bunch my pennies into a nifty digest.

So, new group, eh? The title "new raccoons" is what I often
personally use to refer later episodes of the series when we were
introduced to a whole bunch of new characters via Bentley's family. I
sensed that had the original series continued, the focus would have
slowly shifted from the Raccoondominium to these newbies. Somebody
higher up on the production hierarchy wanted the series to focus on a
family. Watching the newer eps. made me feel like Bert and company
were becoming more regarded as secondary characters.

But we know the real reason for the groups name. In the future, I
sincerely hope there is no comparisons being made between this group
and its predecessor. Just a suggestion to Orbot and Vincent (Forgive
me if I find ironic humor in your signing up as a co-moderator), I
tried looking for this group in the Yahoo catalog by typing in "the
raccoons" with no luck. I'm assuming that new members are going to
find their way into the old group first. Maybe you might want to post
at the old group once in a while to let everyone there know about the
move. And while the old group has been tainted by spam, I still
believe that there are a few respectable members still lingering on
that group. Perhaps it would be only fair if we could wrap up
discussion here in a digest and send it there once in a while?

Politics aside, there is much cause for celebration here. Our beloved
show has finally come back for the genuine consideration of its
public. Tuesday's the day. Everyone make sure to wear their favorite
oversized yellow-on-red "B" sweaters to mark the occasion. :D But
seriously folks, spread the word, tell your friends, rekindle their
memories. This show is like no-other on the planet! It is interseting
to note that the DVD releases contain episodes from the second season
exclusively: Episodes 12-20 respectively. These were the first to be
made at Hinton studios after the producers decided to break away from
Atkinson Film Arts where the specials and the first eleven eps. were
made. Alot of changes occured between these products. Lisa Loughreed
was hired and alot of the songs were re-recorded with her, including
the series outro "Run With Us". Animation Director Paul Schibli was
promoted to co-director and the character designs were slightly
modifyed (IE: Bert's nose getting shorter, his sweater no longer
loose fitting, but snug). Susan Roman was also hired at this time to
replace Linda Feige as the voice of Melissa. I believe this had alot
to do with Melissa's character becoming more self-confident. I wonder
if they chose to release these eps. because Embassy only relased the
first season? At any rate, I am glad since 3 of these nine I have
never seen before. And special features "Behind the Scenes"! I quiver
in anticipation.

Somebody posted that "The Nutcracker Prince" also made it onto a DVD
release. Does Warner Bros. still maintain the distribution rights to
that film or was it released by someone else? I had a hard time
finding that film a few years back, I thought it was long out of
print. However this movie is a fine product. It was made by the
Hinton folks and small voice parts were done by all the Raccoons
folks. Len Carlson never fails to amaze me with his voice talent (Dig
the King in the fairy tale sequence). I highly recommend this movie
to any fan of the Raccoons. This is what quality the Raccoons folks
were fast becoming capable of and truly a dignifyed plateau in
Canadian animation.

For the record, my favorite character is also Bert. C'mon! Bert's my
hero. I find it so cute to see a character have so much self-
confidence and will to do such amazing things, and all with this
demeanor that tell others he is quite down to earth, as if he sub-
consciously knows that while he may not be Neil Armstrong (yet) he's
still one of the gang and someone who cares greatly for the persons
that love him. His energy seems insurmountable (is it the peanut
butter, or what?) and there's something almost epical and romantic
about his love for adventure. In times of boredom, I often ask, what
would Bert do?

Cyril comes in a close second. For all the differences between Bert
and Cyril, it amazes me how he can come off as a cool character, but
man is he ever! He's...just...SO...FUNNNNY!!! He gave me my first 101
in wisecracking and satire and his mature overtone makes the show
overall more colorful and lets you know full well that it's not just
for kids. Bert and Cryil are like the whole catalyst for the show.
They are by far the most active characters and their
protagonist/antagonist relationship provide many a scenario for the
imaginative at heart. You simply cannot have a Raccoons ep. without
these two.

I think I've covered most ground for now, so for those of you growing
impatient with reading all of this I will bow out now and head off
for work (I'm twenty minutes late now ;D ). Not sure when I'll have
this kind of time again, but 'til then folks, here's to the Raccoons.

Cheers, (I know, thats Matt's thing...)
Justin.

the NTSC VHS format that North America uses won't work

I don't think so. I found a page mentioning the DVDs here:
http://joshualane.gearhost.net/news.asp?TID=1095

The price listed in US dollars may very well be the suggested retail
price when the DVDs come to the US. If you're in another country,
then I'm not sure how you could calculate the prices.

Ah, R0 is universal coding, a region free DVD that can be played in
any DVD player. Is this thing you're talking about a R0 DVD drive?
I'm not sure how that works. I thought that only the discs
themselves could have R0 coding to allow play on any DVD player in
the world.

Yes, for the first time, it will be released
theatrically. More info to come. As for the DVD, there
is also an American partner who will be releasing in
the States (at a later date, I believe, in early 04)
but chances are you'd get a better deal ordering from
Morningstar in Canada, what with the dollar...though
it's not such a great exchange anymore, it would still
work out to be cheaper, I'm sure.

I'm curious about this movie that's in production with
the
Raccoons. Anyone have more info about it? Is it
going to be a
theatrical release? Or direct to video/DVD?

Without a doubt, this box set of the Raccoons will be
available in
Canada. But will it be distributed in the United
States too? Just
in case it isn't, American fans like me can order it
from Canada and
it would run on our DVD players since both Canada and
USA utilize
region 1 DVD coding.

There you go...I don't start rumours :-)...you'll just
have to trust me. The DVD artwork got finished earlier
than expected I guess...they managed a release before
Christmas! The new movie, for those who choose to
believe (and yes, it's true) is also in production,
also with the CBC in Canada.

As Fox Mulder would say, "I want to believe." Do you think you could
give us something else, such as a link to an article or the such? I'd
hate to get my hopes up for nothing. ::looks up at stars:: The truth
is out there.

Hmmm.....unless I hear a source on this, I'm just going to have to
file this in the "unconfirmed rumors". I'll put it in along with
unwashed aviator's scarf and half-eaten peanut butter sandwich...

Times to jumpstart some conversation in this new group. So let's
talk about the character we found the most interesting. Whom do you
think was the most interesting character in the Raccoons and why?

The answer for me is Bert Raccoon. I think it's really fascinating
how Bert shows so much energy, enthusiasm, and confidence (or
overconfidence) on the outside but inside he sometimes doubts
himself and he frequently feels a need to be accepted. Hence that's
why Bert got really bothered when he let his friends down (like
in "Promises, Promises"). This kind of character, I think, is
representative of Everyman, because there are alot of us who act
like Bert being extroverts on the outside but introverted on the
inside. I have to admit that Kevin Gillis really did a good job
when he created this character and gave Bert that particular
personality. It kind of makes you wonder if Bert Raccoon was based
on an actual person or maybe even Gillis himself.

I'm just announcing to everyone that our petition to get the
Raccoons specials and TV series onto DVD has now reached the 200
mark. That is excellent but there are still more needed. Get
people to sign the petition please!

deal with spam and spammers, I will delete such messages. But I'm
going to need some assistance. I will soon pick out moderators to
help filter out messages. So keep your eyes and ears open. I may
need you.
