1 December 1947: Death of Crowley. His Last Will and Testament of 9
June 1947 denied earlier wills and did not mention McMurtry in any
capacity. John Symonds and Louis Wilkinson were appointed Literary
Executors.
7 March 1948: Gerald Yorke informed Germer that any Reuss-O.T.O.
carried more authority than any Crowley-O.T.O. and the Reuss-X*s
could outvote anyone else.
24 September 1948: Germer to Grant: "You would have known that I am
not the O.H.O: I do not know whether I would accept the job if it
were pressed on me ... the pledge is connected with being recognised
as a possessor of the IX° O.T.O. It does not instate you or give
you a Charter to work an O.T.O. Lodge."
5 May 1951: Grant received a III°Charter.
25 May 1951: Germer to Grant: "In the first place, do not refer to me
as your superior in the Order. That is only true in an extremely
limited sense. What I appear to be in the O.T.O. has been thrust upon
me, against my will. I will do what I can; but I shall refuse to make
claims that go against my grain. I am strictly speaking the Grand
Treasurer General of the O.T.O. No more, no less!"
18 January 1952: Germer to Kenneth Grant: "There is no active Lodge,
as such, in the U.S.A., of the O.T.O. ... I have often thought that
you might well be chosen for the job [of OHO] ... I look to England
as the leading country ... Germany would also be a suitable country
...The U.S.? Well! This is a spiritual dester ... consider yourself
...as on your own."
19 April 1952: McMurtry to Germer: "Does the O.T.O. still exist as an
organization?"
3 May 1952: Germer to Grant: "If we want to get the O.T.O. properly
going again, we need a competent leader, not only for England but for
the world ... I have often thought that you might well be chosen for
the job ... There is no active Lodge, as such, in the U.S.A. of the
O.T.O."
20 November 1952: Jane Wolfe took over the Agape Lodge.
Summer 1953: W.T. Smith and Louis T. Culling legally registered the
"Church of Thelema" (despite Crowley and Germer both being against
the legal registration of the O.T.O. or Thelema as a Church). Smith
self-proclaimed himself OHO (on the basis of Crowleys Will dated 1st
January 1932).
9 August 1953: Germer to Wolfe: "If I authorize registering of the
Order, it would have to be a real Order, in which duties come first;
privileges a long way after. what was so objectionable in the
handling of Agape Lodge to all serious people who reported to A.C. as
also to authorities such as the FBI and the like, was that it was
just the opposite ... none of them is of "good standing", and have no
rights or privileges ... When Grady came here, he considered himself
as a co-owener, behaved in a strange manner to say the least,
ordered Sascha away ..."
7 September 1953: Germer closed down the 2nd Agape Lodge.
Mid-1950s: McMurtry wanted to re-start O.T.O.-initations, Germer held
him back: "I consider all that to be the lower magick."
20 July 1955: Germer to Grant: "I formally expel you from membership
in the Ordo Templi Orientis".
20 September 1956: Marcelo Ramos Motta to Germer: "I nurse a secret
and ridiculous ambition to be A.C.' successor".
20 September 1957: Germer to Motta: "The O.T.O. doesn't interest me
too much: mine is only the A\A\. A.C. wanted me to set up an entirely
different system." Germer shared Crowley's opinion: "The A\A\ is for
personal initiation; O.T.O. is for groups, & not nearly as
important."
20 December 1957: Motta to Germer: "The O.T.O. is no concern of
mine."
12 February 1958: McMurtry to Germer: "The idea of my starting my own
nucleus is something that I find very attractive."
8th and 22nd October 1959: behind Germer's back, McMurtry wanted to
restart initiations. All ex-Agape Lodge members spoke unanimously
against McMurtry becoming the OHO.
20 March 1959: Germer to Motta about McMurtry, commenting: "how deep
has he sunk", referring to McMurtry's financial unreliability.
2 December 1959: Germer to McMurtry, referring to his "prominent
position in the order ... Instead of a Plus you've been a great
MINUS".
27 January 1960: McMurtry to Gabriel Montenegro: "I have never made a
claim to being the legitimate successor to the Caliphate".
(Montenegro later was to obtain his X° for the US from Metzger)
15 June: Germer to Metzger (translated): "You are the only aspirant
to the Crown".
21 November 1960: Montenegro and his lover H.P. Smith (who said, "I
agree with brother Monty fully)" to McMurtry about the latter's
"fantastic claims" concerning the "Caliphate"letters sent to him by
Crowley: "There is nothing in it that could be construed in any way,
then or henceforth, as intention of appointment to you, as his
spiritual and temporal heir as you infer ... you failed to see the
point."
24 September 1961: Germer to Motta about Metzger: "The Swiss are a
strange crowd."
17 December 1961: Motta to Germer: "Marcel Ramos Motta, not you,
decides what is proper Thelemic business procedure ... You are
warned, and once warned openly is enough for the wise."
23 December 1961: Germer to Motta: "You blithering, miserable idiot
... You have to be left alone."
17 January 1962: Germer to Motta: the O.T.O. is "dormant".
31 January 1962: McMurtry wrote to Jean Shivonen (widow of Max
Schneider) that in the event of Germer's death, one needed to prevent
Germer's widow, Sascha, from receiving the estate, and even suggested
suing Sascha Germer. McMurtry then lapsed into silence until 1969
when Phyllis Seckler wrote to him.
10 March 1962: Germer to Motta about Metzger: "I do not write them
any more."
2 April 1962: Germer to Motta about Metzger: "The letter he wrote me
is half-crazy".
Motta to Germer, 30 May 1962: "I have been so deeply hurt by all this
O.T.O. entanglement that I wish to have nothing to do with the order.
Your lack of trust has wounded me more than I can possibly say"
Germer to Motta, June 9, 1962: "If one tried to go into refuting or
arguing your recent letters one would run the risk of getting
contaminated by the demonic forces that have got hold of you."
20 July 1962: Germer to William Wallace Webb: "I have no group or
organization".
12 October 1962: Germer to Motta: "You are guided by the Supreme
Hierophant".
25 October 1962: Karl Johannes Germer died. He made his wife in his
Last Will and Testament dated 4th December 1951, together with
Friedrich Mellinger, responsible for the O.T.O. material that
belonged to the "heads of the order".
30 October 1962: Sascha Germer to Motta: "Our Beloved Master is dead
... You are The Follower. Please, take it from me, as he died in my
Arms and it was his last Wish!"
6 January 1963: Not aware of any IX° or X° outside Europe,
Metzger proclaimed himself OHO.
