Hi,

Ohh, that's a good tip. :)

I've opened up the tunic to make a jacket, with buttons all the way up.
For some reason Alexander hates having things going on over his head. Once
on they are okay. He dosen't like hats too, except when he's actually
cold, which is a good indicator.

It's the baby proportions I'm having troubles with, so that's a goodie.

Cheers
Sancha

I don't have children yet myself. I joined this list while I was pregnant and
unfortunately we lost the baby during the first trimester. I stick around
though because we are still planning on children and I'll need the tips I pick
up from you ladies. :)

I made baby garb for a good friend's baby and for the pattern I picked up a
commercial pattern for a simple non-knit baby shirt. I just cut the sleeves out
attached to the body section a la a t-tunic and it came out perfectly. It was
really easy because the pattern already had all the baby proportions, I just
made minor changes to make it look period.

Hello!

I have made sizing mistakes on baby garb more times than I can count! My son is
now 11 months and my daughter is 6 years old and I still make errors due to the
fact that their sizes don't correspond with adult shapes.

For your son, Alexander, narrow the shoulders so that you are making a tunic out
of a trapezoid rather than a rectangle. Use under arm gussets for ease in the
body and sleeves and make the neckline with a deep keyhole (if you want
additional instructions, just email me at mistress.elianor@....)

Also, don't be afraid to do weird pleats and tucks to fit. I made a sleeveless
tunic for Paul that was much too large in the neckline and kept slipping off his
shoulders. I ended up tucking a box pleat into the back of the neck which
narrowed it and made it fit fine.

I appreciate how difficult it can be to take small children to events. Mine
seem to enjoy it, but I know many parents who are afraid to try.

Good Luck,

Elianor de Morland,
Calontir

Hi,

I've just joined theladyinwaiting list.

My name is Sancha da Sylva from the Shire of Darton in the Kingdom of
Lochac. I have a 5 week old son, Alexander.

We went to our first event last weekend, with no suitable clothes for him,
as the tunic I was working on turned out too small to get on. It'll be
fine as a jacket, but I ran out of time to modify it. I also didn't have
suitable clothing for breast feeding him.

I do late period Spanish, so I've consulted Hispanic Costume by Ruth
Anderson and found one picutre that would make a suitable breast feeding
dress and it's in my time zone too! I've already slit one chemise over
each breast and this appears to be working, although I need to make it a
little longer.

As for clothes for him. I know that once they are toddlers they wear adult
clothes in miniture. Infants are swaddled, however I don't want to swaddle
him. So tunics appear to be my only option.

My current burning question is how to get tunics that will fit a 3 month
old, as this is when our next event is, that I can get on him, but are not
too big. We also have an event in November, this will be a summer event.

Any advice welcome.

Sancha da Sylva

Congrats Mergret!!!
I'm excited for you! Motherhood is an adventure. :D I don't know what kind of garb you normally wear, is that late Tudor?  I don't really have much experience with that garb+pregnancy/nursing, but anything that is easily expandable around the bust & waist for pregnancy or has seams near your breasts for nursing could probably be adaptable. There may even be some woodcut illustrations from the era of pregnant/nursing mothers. Most kids like the SCA stuff - they'll be playing along with you!

Thank you for allowing me to join this group.

I have been playing since A.S. XXVIII, starting in lower An Tir in the
Mountain's Edge/ Dragon's Mist area, then moved to Tir Righ for the next 9
years, only to return to my former homeland soon.

My persona is Mergret Dyer from a weaving family, born in 1528, Chippingcampden,

I wanted to join this group to glean ideas for garb, either to make new or
rehash from a couple of pieces from my wardrobe. I am about to be a single mom,
42 and expecting my first child October 26th of this year. And of course I am
going to subject my child to this madness of a game *L* So I will be sewing garb

My oldest was *really* into loud musical toys, most of which do not have a volume knob. And as with most things, duck tape took care of it being too loud. Depending on the age of the child... they do have (or at least had) a playground at Pennsic. If they aren't old enough to play on the equipment, they may still want to watch the other children (from the stroller or wagon). Just making our "rounds" was very enjoyable for him, he loves just to look at everything - take it all in.

Okay, calling everyone who's ever taken children to a long camping event,
Pennsic or otherwise:

What do you pack to keep your kids happy? What activities have you found? What
baby equipment could you not live without? Let's get some ideas out there for
all the new moms contemplating Pennsic-with-child.

With my 8 month old, I took a bagful of her regular favorite toys that were also
somewhat period: cloth dolls or animals, wooden blocks, etc. And the piece of
baby equipment that was most handy was one of the high-chair seats that straps
onto a chair...portable high chair, I guess it is. We just sat it on the floor
of the tent and she could eat dirt-free. The playpen did NOT get much use.

I totally agree! I can take my 5 week old anywhere (already has been to 3 SCA functions).  However, my 3 years old who likes to run and not listen...Eekkkk! A year ago I'd bring her to some stuff, but she still liked the stroller then.  Now, not so much.
And slings are great.  I bought a 5 yrd piece of fabric, tear down center to give 2 5 yrd pieces of fabric, then tie onto self. I use muslin for sca events(tye-dye one for other times). Go to: http://wearyourbaby.com/Default.aspx?tabid=63 - that shows to make 3 wraps out of 1 piece of fabric, but i like to just do it into two. also there is steps on how to tie it onto you.

Yeah, I'm right here with you on the "first time mommy" didn't realize that i needed that thing. ^_^ There's just so much that goes into the care of an infant that is just taken for granted by the mass population until it's their turn to do it! I have to say, I feel a lot more grateful to my own mother now that I'm going starting down the path myself! I've always been really close to her, but I never really thought about all of the preparation and work that goes into the first few years of life!

Overwhelming for sure. I have trouble even at month 7 believing that its real. And ive heard the heart seen the ultrasounds and even know what I am having. Its insane! =D

Have to get the crib in the room and then we should be done. Of course things to keep cropping up. I'm a first time mommy so there is all kinds of stuff I am not realizing until after the fact. Good things its kinda fun too.

As excited as I am about Xander, I am thinking that I'm going to be done after one. It's easier to spoil them that way. ^_~ That, and I just can't imagine going through all this again, and I'm only halfway through!! We do intend to acclimate him to SCA events and Renaissance Faires as early as we can. We thought about taking him to some of the winter feasts, but I don't think that it would be fair to the people we would be going with. From what I'm lead to believe, and what I've witnessed with my nieces and nephews, babies don't really do well with sitting still for a couple of hours at a time unless they are asleep, and with such commotion as a feast, it's unlikely to get them to do that. ^_^ So we plan to do the first camping events in May next year, and I'm already starting to stitch up a variety of period pieces for him to wear in different sizes (a good just in case measure, from what I understand). If he's too big for some of them, I've got a couple of girlfriends who are having babies a month and three months after me, so perhaps they'll fit their small ones. We already know that he's going to be "abnormally" long (not too abnormal if you've seen my 5'10" and his father's 6'6") He measures normal except his legs are twice as long as they should be comparitively! He's gonna be a really tall boy!

I second that! Also, with regards to events, go to them now and with one kid - I found two children was a whole different game than one. We don't go to hardly any events anymore. :( Now here in a few more years it will be easier again (unless we have a surprise). Our boys are 30 months apart. *Llio

In regard to the preparation for their arrival, all I have to say is: Do everything now! You will NOT have time after the baby arrives. All they do is sleep and eat, but that's also what you'll be doing. I'd also love to get any information that anyone is willing to share about first babies and preparations that should be made prior to their arrival. I'm starting to get pretty nervous about it.

I second that! Also, with regards to events, go to them now and with one kid - I found two children was a whole different game than one. We don't go to hardly any events anymore. :( Now here in a few more years it will be easier again (unless we have a surprise). Our boys are 30 months apart. *Llio

In regard to the preparation for their arrival, all I have to say is: Do
everything now! You will NOT have time after the baby arrives. All they do is
sleep and eat, but that's also what you'll be doing. We left some major room
decorating (like the wallpaper, carpet, and building the closets) until I had
the baby, thinking my maternity leave would be a good time to get it done. HA!
We did get it done, but was I ever tired! And it took 6 weeks.

So, if you want to make garb or other stuff for the after-pregnancy period -or
any other baby prep, SCA or mundane- I'd do it now, before the chaos begins! But
that's just me...

Congrats!

I wear fitted cottes, and I wore my pre-pregnancy cottes during my entire pregnancy with twins.   I kept them laced to the same tightness because I still needed my bust support, I just hiked the tight part over my bell.  I have pix somewhere.

I usually just lurk, but this is too much of a coincidence to pass up without saying hi.  My SCA name is Ascelyn Mallory, and I'm from Atlantia.  I'm due the day before you, also with my first, also a boy (as we discovered last week), whose middle name will likely be Alexander.

For what it's worth, I'm not changing much in moving to maternity/nursing garb.  I normally do 14th century, and that's what I plan to continue wearing.  There are plenty of paintings of women wearing front-laced cotehardies/ GFDs with the lacing left loose over their shifts for pregnancy or unlaced a bit from the top to allow for nursing.  If the gap gets too big for my own comfort, I plan to throw a really lightweight sideless surcoat over top.  Hopefully that will help maintain modesty while nursing, too.  I've had to hang up my buttoned cotehardie for a good while now, unfortunately.

So far, it's a fun experiment-- after all, a 14th-century woman wouldn't have been able to sew all new clothing, much less change eras entirely.  How would they have adjusted?  Where would they have added extra material post-pregnancy if necessary to keep the gown fitting properly?  I'm in a household that strives for authenticity (something I fall short of constantly, but I'm still learning!) and also in an extra-SCA 14c reenactment group, though, so I both have a lot of backup and realize that some people are more comfortable changing things up for a while.  Granted, I hate hand-sewing and am the proud owner of the newly re-repaired crappiest sewing machine ever, so being too lazy to make a bunch of new garb might have something to do with it too.

Good luck!

Well hello there!

I am also a new member and regarding Pennsic I just wanted to say that some
camps are child friendly from the get go. I will be missing Pennsic this year
due to the fact that my little one is supposed to arrive right in the middle of
it. Oh timing you do have a sense of humor.

I got lucky apparently though because my camp is already telling us to show up
with child in tow. So I guess I am just saying, don't disregard the smaller
shire or even household camps as places to stay.

But now I go enjoy the tips that others have posted. As a new mother I have no
clue what to bring anywhere yet so I am VERY glad to have found this site.

For the past few years there has been an established camp for women / families
with children called Hundred Acre Wood. I'm not certain about this upcoming
Pennsic as I looked over the land registration list on the Coopers Lake /
Pennsic site and did not see the name listed. I put a note out on the Tribe
Pennsic list and If I find out anything, I'll let you know. They co-op on
childcare and such.

Greetings

I have a 14 month old. While I have not been to Pennsic since just after I was married, I do regularly nurse my son at events, including wars/weekend camping.  My nursing garb is only sightly different from my traditional garb.  I have a early 16th century Venitian persona.  I have made myself Venitian style dresses that open in the front with hook and eyes (much easier than lacings).  I also have chemises that have slits in the seams at breast level.  I use this basic pattern: http://realmofvenus.renaissanceitaly.net/library/camiciahowto.htm .  I simply open the seam on the front panel.  This allows for easy nursing that I find more modest then I am able to achieve in modern clothing.  I gather that front panel more than I normally would to allow for the seams to line up closer to the nipple.  You could also make that front panel a bit smaller to allow for this.  When I need to nurse my son, I simply open the top 5 or 6 hooks (there are about 8 or 9 on each bodice) and position the slit in the chemise in the proper place.

Here are some pictures that depict similar chemises, especially the second, 4th, and last. http://www.art-breastfeeding.com/rel1/v9.htm also http://www.art-breastfeeding.com/rel1/v11b.htm in the 3rd, 4th, 13th, and 14th

If you would like pictures of my garb, just let me know. I would be happy to take some of my garb and post them in the group.

Good luck and enjoy Pennsic!,

Aremisia,

Since it is very nice camping with those you know or those that are friends of friends, you may want to ask around to find a small family friendly camp. I know the clock is ticking with registration time however... I believe they do have a general camp for families (if you don't pre-register with a group). I would stay out of the bog - the parties there can go really late and depending on the child might not be too conducive to sleep.

When I went with a crawling 10 1/2 month old - I found that our canvas tent closed up nicely - I just made sure to have a good floor under him. Plastic tents get too hot though. We were on the Savannah - which is next to the battlefield. It is pretty family friendly up there and not noisy at night (usually). Also a wagon is good, make sure to have portable shade... Toy's volume was easily quieted by layers of duck-tape - you can also buy *NEW* toys from Clause(?).

I found cotehardies too hot for me, but bog dresses (very early period, even though I'm not) were so very comfortable, easy to make, and easy access for nursing. That is what I wore for summers. With our second child, we didn't go to Pennsic, but I found at regular events that a split down the front underdress (with a pin on top), paired with my sideless surcoat was optimal, especially for shy me. I don't mind public nursing, but I don't want anyone seeing my breasts. I have since stitched up the underdress and no-one is the wiser. :P Oh, and of course a cloak for nights (and to use as a good shield).

The three year old I guess all depends on temperament and attention span. I'm scared to take my 4 yr old, but he has some other issues... LOL. When he was three I would have made sure to bring a leash (to use only when I was worried about his safety but wanted to give him walking freedom - kids only tolerate wagons & strollers so much). And if you ask around you may find a responsible teen to watch the kiddos for a night out - older kids are looking for spending money there. :) If not, a trusted early bird (maybe another parent) might help out as well - that is a benefit of camping with comrades.

*Good luck* - I envy you, Hubby says he doesn't want to go to Pennsic again unless we are child-free :(

Hello! A 3 month old is easy to take to Pennsic, especially if they like to ride
in a sling. The 3yo is another story! Watch those firepits. Actually, I went

For nursing garb, I did a couple different things. I had a t-tunic with a slit
down the middle, covered by a Viking apron dress. Also I slit an underdress that
I often wore under a loose, short overtunic, which I could pull up to nurse
under. Other people wear front-opening cotehardies and just open up! That's a

As far as kid-friendly camps, I know the Middle Marches has both a kid and a
non-kid encampment some years. I guess, contact your local group and ask, or
talk to other moms in your area to see what they know of.

Hello

I am a mom to one 3 year old and a 4 week old. I live in the Midrealm.

I was not in the sca while nursing for first kiddo, so I have no nursing garb.
What do you recommend that worked/s for you?

Also, I am interested in going to Pennsic with the 4 week old. What do you
recommend for one that little - he'd be 3 months for pennsic. Also, does anyone
know of a camp that is kid friendly? Not sure if i'll go due to many things,
but the camp that I could be in isn't kid friendly at all.

Any other hints for new mom in the sca?

Hello Grainne!

You and I are in almost identical situations...I am expecting our first and will
be 6 months during the main week of Pennsic, which at this point, I am planning
on attending and camping at.

For myself, I'm am thinking about making a wardrobe of mix-and-match
turkish/persian pieces to wear throughout the war.

Last year I had a few pieces in this style and found I was the most comfy
wearing them. Also, just last weekend we did War Practice (which is a weekend
event held on the same land as Pennsic) and I pulled out the turkish since I
just couldn't face my usual bodices or cotehardies. I was so comfortable the
whole event & it was easy to add layers if it got chilly and to drop layers if
it was to warm.

Plus most the garments involved are either loose enough to grow with my changing
body, or simple enough to leave seams that can be easily let out.

So that's my plan for War dressing. :) ;)

Yep, we took our daughter to Pennsic when she was 8 months old, and again at 20
months, then at 3.5 years when our son was 13 months (skipped the year before,
didn't want to take a 1 month old), so we've done a variety of ages. 8mo was
good, not crawling yet so didn't get into stuff. 20mo was about baby wrangling,
and staying comfy in the heat and the cold. Then with the two of them, they
entertained each other, we had other kids in camp too. But 13 months...talk
about trying to escape the tent! Had to get creative.

In the past, moms have mentioned taking portable fencing, baby corrals, etc, to
confine toddlers, but I found that with our pavilion all I really needed to do
was tie the walls closed up to the 2-3 foot mark. Adults could step over to
enter tent, but kids had a harder time "escaping".

Also, with new "walkers", you'll see a lot of them on harness/leashes. I never
liked the harness on the kid, but it is very helpful in big crowded places like
Pennsic (or the state fair, for that matter). You can make one out of nice trim
and plastic buckles from JoAnn's, just copy an existing harness' construction.

Good luck!

Pensic with wee ones before? I'm planning to make garb that is pretty durable
(she should be walking by then, right?), light (it did get hella hot last year)
and basic. She is more likely than my husband to wear a hat, at least. I've

right now for his sake, as well as for Evie's sake, too!

Hello!

New member here! We took our nine month old daughter to her first event (12th
Night last January), and are now contemplating Pensic. Have any of you gone to
Pensic with wee ones before? I'm planning to make garb that is pretty durable
(she should be walking by then, right?), light (it did get hella hot last year)
and basic. She is more likely than my husband to wear a hat, at least. I've
been in the SCA since 1996 (An Tir), and we live in the Barony of Rising Waters
(Ealdormere). My husband is fairly new to the SCA, so we're still going slowly
right now for his sake, as well as for Evie's sake, too!

They both thoroughly enjoyed 12th Night, although Evie was abit mystified by the
Baron's big beard, lol.
