Yeah, I waited till Diana R. was out and then sent her an e-card from Hallmark because I didn't want to spend money on a paper card and stamp only to have the Postal Service send it back as undeliverable. No point in post office boxes for just a short hospital stay; maybe the hospitals should just forward these cards.

If you want to send an e-card, go for it.

Wild Orbits: Stars Not From Around Here
SPACE.com

Andrea Thompson
Senior Writer – Thu Jun 11, 11:30 am ET

PASADENA, CALIF. — A recently discovered type of cold, lightweight star follows
some wild orbits around the Milky Way, a team of astronomers have found.

Some of these so-called "ultracool subdwarfs" plunge almost through the center
of the Milky Way, while others venture so far beyond the galaxy that they might
be visitors from another galaxy, astronomers said here this week at the 214th
meeting of the American Astronomical Society.

Ultracool subdwarfs were first recognized as a unique class of stars in 2003.
They are distinguished by their low temperatures and low concentrations of
elements other than hydrogen and helium.

They are at the bottom end of the size range of stars, with some being so small
that they are closer to objects called brown dwarfs. They are up to 10,000 times
fainter than the sun and are extremely rare — only a few dozen ultracool
subdwarfs are known today.

These small stars also move surprisingly swiftly through the galaxy.

"Most nearby stars travel more or less in tandem with the sun tracing circular
orbits around the center of the Milky Way once every 250 million years," said
team member Adam Burgasser of MIT. The sun moves at about 485,000 mph (782,000
kilometers per hour).

The ultracool subdwarfs, on the other hand, zip along at more than 1 million mph
(1.8 million kph).

"If there are interstellar cops out there, these stars would surely lose their
driver's licenses," Burgasser said.

Wild orbits

Burgasser's team wanted to find out what kind of orbits these speedy stars
followed. To do so, they assembled measurements of the positions, distances and
motions of about two dozen of the stars and used model developed to study
galactic collisions to chart the orbits.

The results were surprising indeed: "These orbits were like nothing I'd ever
seen before," said team member Robyn Anderson, an MIT graduate student.

Some of these stars follow eccentric comet-like tracks that take them deep into
the center of the Milky Way. Others swoop far beyond the sun's own orbit. In
fact, most spend most of their time thousands of light-years above or below the
disk of the Milky Way.

"Someone living on a planet around one of these subdwarfs would have an
incredible nighttime view of a beautiful spiral galaxy — our Milky Way — spread
across the sky," Burgasser said.

The orbital results confirm that all of the ultracool subdwarfs are part of the
Milky Way's halo, a widely dispersed population that likely formed in the
distant past.

Out of this galaxy

But one of these subdwarfs, a star dubbed 2MAS 1227-0447 in the constellation
Virgo, has an orbit that is so far out that it suggests it has an extragalactic
origin.

Our calculations show that this subdwarf travels up to 200,000 light years away
from the center of the galaxy, almost 10 times farther than the sun," said team
member John Bochanski, also of MIT. In fact, it's further even than the Milky
Way's nearest galactic neighbors.

"Based on the size of its one billion-year orbit and direction of motion, we
speculate that 2MAS 1227-0447 might have come from another, smaller galaxy that
at some point got too close to the Milky Way and was ripped apart by
gravitational forces," Bochanski said.

Astronomers have found other stars that came from neighboring galaxies, but
these have all been massive red giants. The star mapped by Burgasser's team is
the first alien low-mass star.

"If we can identify what stream this star is associated with, or which dwarf
galaxy it came from, we could learn more about the types of stars that have
built up in the Milky Way's halo over the past 10 billion years," Burgasser
said.

The team's results were detailed in the Astrophysical Journal.

Ira Furoris: Latin for "furious wrath."

Lots of mass shooting incidents and other mass murders while this alignment was

WISE Mission Assembled and Preparing for Launch
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
June 10, 2009

PASADENA, Calif. -- NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE,
has been assembled and is undergoing final preparations for a planned
Nov. 1 launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.

The mission will survey the entire sky at infrared wavelengths, creating
a cosmic clearinghouse of hundreds of millions of objects -- everything
from the most luminous galaxies, to the nearest stars, to dark and
potentially hazardous asteroids. The survey will be the most detailed to
date in infrared light, with a sensitivity hundreds of times better than
that of its predecessor, the Infrared Astronomical Satellite.

"Most of the sky has never been imaged at these infrared wavelengths
with this kind of sensitivity," said Edward Wright, the mission's
principal investigator at UCLA. "We are sure to find many surprises."

On May 17, the mission's science instrument was delivered to Ball
Aerospace & Technologies Corp. in Boulder, Colo., where it was attached
to the spacecraft, built by Ball. The assembled unit was then blasted by
sound to simulate the effects of launch. Tests for electronic "noise" in
the detectors will be performed next.

The science instrument is a 40-centimeter (16-inch) telescope with four
infrared cameras. A cryostat, or cooler, uses frozen hydrogen to chill
the sensitive megapixel infrared detectors down to seven Kelvin (minus
447 degrees Fahrenheit). The instrument was built by Space Dynamics
Laboratory in Logan, Utah.

Among expected finds from WISE are hundreds of thousands of asteroids in
our solar system's asteroid belt, and hundreds of additional asteroids
that come near Earth. Many asteroids have gone undetected because they
don't reflect much visible light, but their heat makes them glow in
infrared light that WISE can see. By cataloguing the objects, the
mission will provide better estimates of their sizes, a critical step
for assessing the risk associated with those that might impact Earth.

"We know that asteroids occasionally hit Earth, and we'd like to have a
better idea of how many there are and their sizes," said Amy Mainzer of
NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., the mission's deputy
project scientist. "Whether they are dark or shiny, they all emit
infrared light. They can't hide from WISE."

The mission is also expected to find the coldest stars -- dim orbs
called brown dwarfs that are too small to have ignited like our sun.
Brown dwarfs are littered throughout our galaxy, but because they are so
cool, they are often too faint to see in visible light. The infrared
detectors on WISE will pick up the glow of roughly 1,000 brown dwarfs in
our galaxy, including those coldest and closest to our solar system. In
fact, astronomers say the mission could find a brown dwarf closer to us
than the nearest known star, Proxima Centauri, located approximately 4
light-years away.

"We've been learning that brown dwarfs may have planets, so it's
possible we'll find the closest planetary systems," said Peter
Eisenhardt, the mission's project scientist at JPL. "We should also find
many hundreds of brown dwarfs colder than 480 degrees Celsius (900
degrees Fahrenheit), a group that as of now has only nine known members."

In addition, the survey will reveal the universe's most luminous
galaxies seen long ago in the dusty throes of their formation, disks of
planet-forming material around stars, and other cosmic goodies. The
observations will guide other infrared telescopes to the most
interesting objects for follow-up studies. For example, NASA's Spitzer
Space Telescope, the Herschel observatory just launched by ESA with
significant NASA participation, and NASA's upcoming James Webb Space
Telescope will direct their gaze at objects uncovered by WISE.

WISE will lift off from Vandenberg aboard a United Launch Alliance Delta
II rocket. It will orbit Earth, mapping the entire sky in six months
after a one-month checkout period. Its frozen hydrogen is expected to
last several months longer, allowing WISE to map much of the sky a
second time and see what has changed.

JPL manages the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer for NASA's Science
Mission Directorate. The mission's principal investigator, Edward
Wright, is at UCLA. The mission was developed under NASA's Explorer
Program managed by the Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. The
science instrument was built by the Space Dynamics Laboratory and the
spacecraft was built by Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. Science
operations and data processing will take place at the Infrared
Processing and Analysis Center at the California Institute of Technology
in Pasadena. Caltech manages JPL for NASA.

More information is online at http://wise.ssl.berkeley.edu/mission.html .

The Infrared Astronomical Satellite, launched in 1983, was a joint
mission between NASA, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

"This ancient Chinese map of planet Earth's northern sky is part of the Dunhuang
Star Atlas, one of the most impressive documents in the history of astronomy.
The oldest complete star atlas known, it dates to the years 649 to 684,
discovered at the Silk Road town of Dunhuang in 1907. A recent analysis that
examines the accuracy and projections used to make it notes the atlas marks
positions of over 1,300 stars and outlines 257 Chinese star groups or asterisms.
The star positions in the hand drawn atlas were found to be accurate to within a
few degrees. In this example showing the north polar region, a very recognizable
Big Dipper, part of the modern constellation Ursa Major, lies along the bottom
of the chart. An additional 12 charts depict equatorial regions in 30 degree
sections and also include a grouping resembling the modern constellation Orion.
The atlas is on display at the British Library in London to celebrate the
International Year of Astronomy."

This is a glossary of Chinese star regions, asterisms and star names linked to
from the page (nothing matching them to the conventional--that is, Western--star
map, unfortunately).

=========
The Chinese stars and constellation patterns are from four major sources: Stars of Jade  Julius D.W. Staal  Writ Press, Decatur, GA, 1984; Star Names, Their Lore & Meaning  R.H. Allen (1899), Dover, 1964; The Soochow Astronomical Chart:  W.C. Rufus & Hsing-Chih Tien, University of Michigan Press, Ann Arbor, 1945; Chinese Astrology  Derek Walters  Aquarian Press, 1987

Staal's primary source was Gustave Schlegel's Uranographie Chinoise (1875) which he translated for his own use; both Schlegel and Staal calculated that the 4 great sky figures of the earliest Chinese astronomy/astrology went back to 15,600 BC; this is known as the First Division (the approximate age of the great Lascaux cave paintings in the West, which included a depiction of Taurus, the Bull!). Their breakdown into component asterisms, the Sieu (Hsiu), or Houses, (the Second Division) belonged to the period of about 13,400 to 12,900 BC; the Third Division probably occurred about 12,900 BC, and the Fourth Division of the reign of Emperor Yao starts between 3000 and 2000 BC, roughly coincidental with the earliest records of the Western tradition.

The second great stage of Chinese astronomy/astrology entered with the mythical Emperor Fu-Hsi whose reign is ascribed to 2953-2883 BC and the semi-mythical Emperor Yao, 2356-2255 BC.  It is known as the 4th Division and roughly corresponds, in time, to the earliest known developments in the West. The 4th Division is subdivided into the historic 3000-2700 BC, and the modern, 2700 BC to the present. If these dates are even approximately correct, then the Chinese sky patterns are incredibly ancient, and far older than the archaic Euphratean sources of the western tradition; however, another possibility remains, almost completely speculative: that all of these traditions emerge from a common ancestral root.

Because of the enormous time spans involved, and the Chinese use of the sky as a practical as well as spiritual calendar, enabling them to know when to plant, harvest, clean wells, etc, the gradual shifting of the sky patterns due to precession necessitated new "overlays" of asterisms and attributions after long intervals; thus the multiple and occasionally confusing multiplicity of symbols and patterns in the Chinese sky figures.

=======================
Of the books I mentioned, Derek Walters' Chinese Astrology is the most available, and is excellent.

Love, Diana
