Affectionately known as the Poet Laureate of the Planet, Sanchez's work
spans over 40 years. Her contribution to poetry is unparalleled and her
recent CD "Full Moon of Sonia" serves as a reminder of her impact on the
oral tradition in African-American literature. A glimpse of Sanchez's full
career reveals that she is the author of over 16 books including Shake
Loose My Skin, Homecoming, We a BaddDDD People, Homegirls and
Handgrenades, Under a Soprano Sky, and others. She is the recipient
ofcountless awards and honors from institutions such as the National
Endowment for the Arts and the Women International League for Peace and
Freedom. Her poetry has also appeared in the movie Love Jones. Sanchez has
lectured at over 500 universities and colleges in the United States and
has traveled the world reading her poetry in Africa, Cuba, the Caribbean,
Australia, Nicaragua, and many other countries. She was also the first
Presidential Fellow at Temple University where she held the Laura Carnell
Chair in English until she retired in 1999. Full Moon of Sonia, which
features some of the finest composers, musicians, and vocalists working in
music today, is a celebration of the life and work of Sonia Sanchez. The
CD is a comprehensive music recording of her poetry, laced with smooth
vocals, jazz, R&B, gospel, blues, Afro-Cuban, and hip hop.
Richard Bartee is being remembered for his innovative legacy of bringing
poetry and art into many uncommon places throughout the city. He was a
tireless advocate of the written and Spoken Word and he was fondly known
as Brooklyn's poet laureate. Bartee, the author of poems, songs and
slogans, among them the book, America On Our Minds in Harlem (co-authored
with Jamel Carma), and the song, "Harlem Heartbeat," would ride the "D"
train from the Bronx to Brooklyn, taking his poetry directly to the
people. He'd recite anywhere, convincing folks that poetry indeed belonged
to all of us -- selling pamphlets and chapbooks while rewarding us with
stickers that read: MORE HUGGING, LESS MUGGING!, his most famous slogan,
or those little cards with mirrors in them. A stalwart constant with the
Harlem Chamber of Commerce, the Harlem Arts Alliance, and Brooklyn's
Billie Holiday Theater, Bartee was ever encouraging the inclusion of poets
and musicians as regular features in such annual community events as
Harlem Week, Marcus Garvey Day, and the African American Day Parade,
culminating in several poetry performances at the famed Apollo Theatre
long before Hip Hop and Spoken Word Jams took to the stage. He was a
member of SPIN, the African Heritage Caucus inside of the National Writers
Union, and a member of the NWU's New York Local Steering Committee,
working with many of the aforementioned activist writers in an attempt to
form a Cultural Workers Union, a project that remains unfinished. Bartee
died on April 7, 2003 but his work lives on in the hearts and minds of
many people he touched through his poetry and ministry. Sonia Sanchez and
Rich Bartee have played special roles in African Voices history. Sanchez
guest edited one of the magazine's 10th Anniversary issue and Bartee
influenced African Voices to develop a literary style that showcases
poetry as its centerpiece.
African Voices Ellie Charles Artists Awards is named after the
organization's first chairperson Eleanor "Ellie" Charles who dedicated
her life to supporting the arts, education and young people. In 1998,
legendary photographer Gordon Parks became the first artist to receive
African Voices prestigious artist award. Past Ellie Award recipients are
actress/activist Ruby Dee and award-winning authors Walter Mosley and Wole
Soyinka, poet Amiri Baraka and actress Phyllis Yvonne Stickney.

See Below for More Information in Regard to Keynote Speaker Sophia Stewart
http://www.daghettotymz.com/matrix/matrix.html
Black Author Wins The Matrix Copyright Infringement Case
This little known story has met a just conclusion, as Sophia Stewart,
African-American author of The Matrix will finally receive her just due from
the copyright infringement of her original work!!!
Monday, October 4th, 2004 ended a six-year dispute involving Sophia Stewart,
the Wachowski Brothers, Joel Silver and Warner Brothers. Stewart's
allegations, involving copyright infringement and racketeering, were
received and acknowledged by the Central District of California, Judge
Margaret Morrow residing.
Stewart, a New Yorker who has resided in Salt Lake City for the past five
years, will recover damages from the films, The Matrix I, II and III, as
well as The Terminator and its sequels. She will soon receive one of the
biggest payoffs in the history of Hollywood, as the gross receipts of both
films and their sequels total over 2.5 billion dollars.
Stewart filed her case in 1999, after viewing the Matrix, which she felt had
been based on her manuscript, "The Third Eye," copyrighted in 1981. In the
mid-eighties Stewart had submitted her manuscript to an ad placed by the
Wachowski Brothers, requesting new sci-fi works.
According to court documentation, an FBI investigation discovered that more
than thirty minutes had been edited from the original film, in an attempt to
avoid penalties for copyright infringement. The investigation also stated
that "credible witnesses employed at Warner Brothers came forward, claiming
that the executives and lawyers had full knowledge that the work in question
did not belong to the Wachowski Brothers." These witnesses claimed to have
seen Stewart's original work and that it had been "often used during
preparation of the motion pictures.
"The defendants tried, on several occasions, to have Stewart's case
dismissed, without success. Stewart has confronted skepticism on all sides,
much of which comes from Matrix fans, who are strangely loyal to the
Wachowski Brothers. One on-line forum, entitled Matrix Explained has an
entire section devoted to Stewart. Some who have researched her history and
writings are open to her story. Others are suspicious and mocking. "It
doesn't bother me," said Stewart in a phone interview last week, "I always
knew what was true."
Some fans, are unaware of the case or they question its legitimacy, due to
the fact that it has received little to no media coverage. Though the case
was not made public until October of 2003, Stewart has her own explanation,
as quoted at aghettotymz.com:
"The reason you have not seen any of this in the media is because Warner
Brothers parent company is AOL-TimeWarner... this GIANT owns 95 percent of
the media... let me give you a clue as to what they own in the media
business... New York Times papers/magazines, LA Times papers/ magazines,
People Magazine, CNN news, Extra, Celebrity Justice, Entertainment Tonight,
HBO, New Line Cinema, Dreamworks, Newsweek, Village Roadshow... and many,
many more!...They are not going to report on themselves. They have been
suppressing my case for years..."
Although there have been outside implications as to racial injustice
(Stewart is African American), she does not feel that this is the case.
"This is all about the Benjamins," said Stewart. "It's not about money with
me. It's about justice."
Stewart's future plans involve a record label, entitled Popsilk Records, and
a motion picture production company, All Eyez On Me, in reference to God." I
wrote The Third Eye to wake people up, to remind them why God put them here.
There's more to life than money," said Stewart. "My whole to the world is
about God and good and about choice, about spirituality over 'technocracy'."
If Stewart represents spirituality, then she truly has prevailed over the
"technocracy" represented in both the Terminator and the Matrix, and now,
ironically, by their supposed creators.
Stewart is currently having discussions with CBS about a possible exclusive
story and has several media engagements in the near future to nationally
publicize her victory. June 13th 2004. Sophia Stewart's press release read:
"The Matrix & Terminator movie franchises have made world history and have
ultimately changed the way people view movies and how Hollywood does
business, yet the real truth about the creator and creation of these films
continue to elude the masses because the hidden secret of the matter is that
these films were created and written by a Black woman... a Black woman named
Sophia Stewart. But Hollywood does not want you to know this fact simply
because it would change history. Also it would encourage our Black children
to realize a dream and that is... nothing is impossible for them to
achieve!"

A FIGHTER TACKLES HIS TOUGHEST FOE
By Courtland Milloy
Wednesday, March 30, 2005; Page B01
Damu Smith, a community organizer and social activist, has waged some
tough fights over the years -- against apartheid in South Africa and
against police brutality here at home; for an end to gun violence in the
Washington area; and for a freeze on nuclear weapons throughout the
world.
But nothing compares with what he's up against now: colon cancer.
Smith, 53, was in Israel and the Palestinian territory last week for a
peace march when he got the news. The day before the event, he collapsed
and was taken to a hospital in Bethlehem, where doctors discovered
polyps in his colon and a tumor in his liver.
"The c-word was never uttered and, to be honest, I was afraid to ask,"
Smith said in an interview yesterday. "But all of the information
suggested that's what I had."
Upon his return to the District on Thursday, Smith was admitted to
Providence Hospital, where he learned just how serious his condition is.
"When they told me how much time they thought I had left, it hit me like
a ton of bricks," he said.
In the Health section of The Washington Post yesterday, staff writer
January W. Payne reported that the American College of Gastroenterology
has issued new guidelines urging African Americans to be screened for
colorectal cancer beginning at age 45 -- five years earlier than other
people.
African Americans have earlier onset of the disease and higher
incidence and mortality rates than whites, the report said. Moreover,
those with a family history of colon cancer should get tested even
before they turn 45 and more frequently than the recommended every 10
years.
Obesity and cigarette smoking increase the risk for the disease. But
just eating right, getting exercise and not smoking won't suffice.
"I am religious about what I put in my body," said Smith, who is a
vegetarian. "But I have a family history. My father died of it. That's
why I needed to get checked more often. Sometimes, I'd feel pain in my
abdomen and figure it was just a bellyache. You just can't rely on
self-diagnosis."
Smith doesn't dwell on what he should have done as much as what he must
do now. So don't expect to find him stuck on a pity pot.
"I'm going to be the poster child for twice-a-year screenings," he told
me.
"I'm telling you: Please, don't wait. And this is not just for black
people; this is for everybody. Ask your doctor about getting a
colonoscopy now."
That is a highly recommended procedure in which you are sedated while
the entire length of your colon is examined with a camera-tipped
instrument attached to a flexible tube. Doctors are then able to detect
and painlessly remove growths on the colon that can become cancerous.
At $650, the procedure is not cheap -- but neither is dealing with
colon cancer.
"I have a 12-year-old daughter, and she's the crown jewel of my life,"
Smith said. "Every time I look in her beautiful face, I say to myself:
'I have to live. I can't leave her alone. My mission isn't over yet.' "
Smith came to Washington from St. Louis in 1974, arriving on a
Greyhound bus with $100 in his pocket and a commitment to justice and
mercy in his heart. He held parties to raise money for causes that
ranged from paying for a local woman's operation to helping finance the
Free South Africa Movement.
He is founder and president of Black Voices for Peace, an antiwar
movement, and executive director of the National Black Environmental
Justice Network, which wages campaigns for lead-free drinking water and
the removal of toxic waste dumps.
His many friends are planning a tribute and fundraising gala for him.
E-mail spiritofhope2@... <mailto:spiritofhope2@...> for more
information.
"I've spent much of my life organizing campaigns for all kinds of good
causes, but now I have to organize a campaign to stay alive," Smith
said. "My prognosis, medically, is pretty typical for someone with
advanced colon cancer. But I believe I can overcome this through my
Creator and the army of angels that have been assembled through my
family and friends all over the world. I am overwhelmed by the love."

…..Black people can't depend on one another,
Always in competition for the scraps against each other.
Shamefully, it's because our barrel contains rotten niggas.
But –
A nigga is quick to expect something from Black people…
Hmmm, that figures.
If you expect the government to tell you the deal
Better strap on some Depends, and that's for real.
Cause we're in deep doo doo, but they won't tell you.
So what's left for one to do?
To thine own self, BE TRUE!.....
AND on Blackness
…Deliver me from the belly of this beast.
Yelling, kicking and screaming to find peace
Yet my soul craves war as a release.
My
Pride in Blackness is so deep that if I could
I would use 3 coats of the deepest, darkest blends
Then I would seal them with lacqer
Me
The detainee with invisible chains.
Searching to find what part of my spirit remains.
I desire the liberty to roam freely in my skin.
I demand respect for this melanin…..
AND on MJ
…White folks don't want no Black man with all that land in Santa
Barbara, California. With 2700 acres he's got, Michael has enough
land to give his Mama, Daddy, nine siblings and 56.5 other Black
people reparations….
Like that? They are excerpts from the "on it's way to bestseller"
book by Waset. It's called Power Journal:Chronicles Of A
Revolutionary Black Woman In White America.

***FOCUS VIDEO OF THE MONTH***
OLD SCHOOL HIP-HOP MASTERPIECE
by Panic Run Time: 7:40
http://www.blackconsciousness.com/sshop/straightup.html
Review by: Booty Adams
This is an informational video that explores the science, origins
and impact of the Hip-Hop game. From his involvement in the game,
Brother Panic lays down some serious observations and criticisms
about gods, playas and pretenders in the game. I particularly liked
his "GO & FETCH IT THEORY" which was highlighted in his first half
hour. At times the lecture could seem opinionated, but if you
know "The Hip=Hop Game", you'll be able to overstand what this is
all about!
A FEW OF THE TOPICS COVERED
Hip-Hop Intent
REAL GODS OF THE GAME
Frequency / Vibes
MC's
N.Y. / L.A. / East / West / All Over
ORIGINATORS
Nothing New Under The Sun
CONTROL OF STARDOM
Whites Stealing / Controlling Energy
CROSSOVER
Consciousness of it's own
This video is rated "R"- If you are not into Old School Hip-Hop this
video is not for you. Most of what the lecturer deals with would
seem foreign, but if you think you know Hip-Hop, you might want to
add to your mental database. The lecturer admits that he
only "scratches" the surface. More to come!

BWM Family,
We are proud to announce The Fine Print a weekly column housed in
Commentary & Perspectives at BWM. The Fine Print is to devoted
delivering current political and social perspectives as they effect
the Black community in the US and Diaspora. Joi C. Ridley,
Journalist, Associate Editor and newest member of the BWM editorial
team will bring editorials, which we hope will make you think and act
with responsibility. This week Joi looks at Sudan, Africa's longest
civil war. She is joined for Oxfam journalist/photographer Adrian
McIntyre who shares his up close and personal story on the Sudanese
Civil War. You will find a feedback box located at the end of Joi's
editorial. We want to hear from you! Comments will be posted in
next week's issue of BWM.
World Community offer support for Africa's Longest Civil War
International donors have exceeded Sudan's aid requests with pledges
of $4.5 billion for recovery efforts from its civil war that has
claimed more than two million lives and displaced four million
villagers from their homes.
At the end of a two-day Oslo conference attended by representatives
of 60 nations worldwide, delegates pledged $4.5 for 2005-2007. The
funds will primarily be used to bolster a January peace accord ending
a 21-year war between the government and southern rebels and end
separate conflicts in Darfur in the west. Read more in our new
column "The Fine Print" with journalist Joi C. Ridley.
A Darfur Mother's Dilemma
In the grey light that comes just before dawn, 38-year old Muna
awakens to a heart-wrenching choice. Should she leave the relative
safety of this camp for displaced people in the Wadi Salih region of
West Darfur and go out into the surrounding plains and forests to
collect firewood for cooking and grass to feed her donkey? If she
does, there's a chance she will be attacked, beaten or raped. If she
doesn't go out, she won't be able to cook breakfast for her five
children. Even the donkey might starve. The piles of rotting
carcasses along one edge of the camp are a constant reminder that
many other animals have suffered a similar fate. Journalist Adrian
McIntyre for Oxfam shares a mother's story. Read more....

Creative Enterprises, International is pleased to announce changes and
promotions within our corporate structure. Our creative energy is directly
from The Source of all Creation itself and we give thanks. Our Board of
Directors believe we will add a bit more creativity with our expansion. I
am excited and humbled by the trust placed in me as Chief Financial
Officer and Public Information Officer. It is an adventure to work with
such esteemed Sistahs and Brothers.
An esteemed elder Priestess of Oshun, the Yoruba goddess of fertiilty,
Iyalode AseKunle, has been handpicked to head Ride The Wind Tours and
Imports. This branch of our company will work closely with the
reparations, economic development and resettement movement to provide
tours to our homeland. We will deal with the all issues facing Africans on
the Black Planet personally with Afrikan heads of state for a more
personalized visit. Tours are also available for reconciliation and
reconnecting with the Mother to Nigeria and Benin, West Afrika.
Additionally, Ride The Wind Imports And Tours will bring you quality
Afrikan products, including clothing, food items and spiritual products.
Bookmarket our The Sistahs Marketplace at www.afrikansistahsmarket.com for
new products in the coming weeks from the Mother Source.
Thank you Iyalode for honoring us with your presence on our Board of
Directors and heading up Ride the Wind. We will "ride the wind" to
reconciliation and self determination.
Sistah Ayoka Bandele, former CEO of Afrikan Sistahs Radio has been
appointed to head Afrikan Sistahs Publishing and Productions. This is a
huge undertaking due to the fact that we have Brother Tijuan on board to
produce our documentaries. We are in demand as publishers largely due to
the fact that we have found creative ways in getting our people’s books
published on their own terms. This had been largely due to the efforts of
Sistah Ayoka. It is only fitting and correct that her hand of
transformation work to produce CD’s, DVD’s, documentaries and Afrikan
centered publications. Music technology is her speciality. She will
continue to DJ on all stations as "DJ Whirlwind" and her music mixes will
continue to grace our airwaves. Look for her new show when we announce
our hosts for all three stations.
We will announce shortly the new CEO of Afrikan Sistahs Radio and head of
our new "Just Us" Project. This polical, womanist activist will help set
the world upside down and right it again. Stay tuned. She is freeing
herself from some of her activism to devote more time to this expanding
radio Station. You are in for a treat.
Young Sistah Autum Ashante is the official media representative for
Afrikan Sistahs Doin Tha Damn Thang. Look for her representation at the
Million Man March Reunion in October. Not only will this young Afrikan
Sistah perform, but she will cover the March for Afrikan Sistahs Radio. We
look forward to watching her stand in our footsteps and grow in
creativity.
We at Creative Enterprises are working closely with the leaders of the
Million Man March Reunion to bring you the best of the best. Brother

quality, consistent media coverage on our stations and our publications.

Sistahs in the Struggle
A Tribute to Black Women Liberators
Ancient and Modern
This enlightening Power Point slide presentation lecture reveals the
stories of well-known and little known African women throughout the
diaspora. The focus is on those who fought against discrimination
and
oppression. Lives of ancient African queens are compared with women
of
African descent in later periods.
The viewer will discover the answers to the following questions:
• Who are some of the most uncompromising Black Women freedom
fighters,
both well known and unknown?
• What similarities exist between the great queens of ancient Kemet
(Egypt) and our courageous sisters who plotted revolts and escapes
during the enslavement of African people in the U.S. and Caribbean?
• What role did sisters play in the lives of some of our most
illustrious brothers – from ancient times to modern?
• Which sisters were involved in the most daring attempts to achieve
freedom from European colonial rule?
• What means did African women use to fight the racism, oppression
and
aggression of apartheid?
• What events in the history of African people would have been
impossible without the involvement of Black women?
Merira Kwesi is a lecturer on African culture and history. She links
the
past with the present by means of exciting and dynamic slide
productions
based on her travel and study on the African continent. Sister Kwesi
researches the many female personalities who have played an integral
role in the history of Black people. She also investigates the many
symbols and cultural practices that originated with our African and
African American ancestors.
Merira Kwesi has researched and traveled in the African Nile Valley
for
the past twelve years. She also conducts the Kemet Nu "Know
Thyself"
educational tours to Egypt and Ethiopia with her husband, Ashra
Kwesi.
Sister Kwesi is co-owner of Kemet Nu Productions, a company that
presents African history by means of video productions.

spoken word artists such as TGO, 360 Degrees PE, Ikwunga, DJ Slice,
Kina, along with Dwele, Talib, Mos Def, Angela Davis, Maya Angelou,

Rashidi, NWA, NAS and more. Others will be on as soon as we can

We will go live with Facilitators (hosts) June 1 in honor of Odunde,
