  It is almost here! Tomorrow is the big day.
 
 A couple of last minute reminders...
 
 -Homebrew is always welcome, we can try them before the commercial beers if you wish.
 
 -No limit on the amount of beers you bring, just bring at least one beer per person participating in the tasting OR make a $20 donation to the club.
 
 -This will be a potluck type of event so please bring a snack or entree to share. You can also bring something to compare or contrast with your beer.
 
 -Feel free to list the beers that you are potentially bringing as well as food items
 
 -We will try to develop a tasting order, but it probably won't matter
 
 -This will be a very casual atmosphere as usual
 
  This should be a fun end of the year get-together and I am really looking forward to it. The beer line up that I have been hearing about promises to be an amzing and unique selection.
 
 See you guys there!
 
 P.S.  I am planning on serving cheddar and white truffle hot dog roll ups and am dusting off an aged Dark lord, Goose island bourbon county stout and another surprise as we speak.

I am currently recruiting volunteers for the Brewing Network's 2013 Winter Brews festival.
The event will be held on Saturday January 26th, and is open to the public from 12-4. There will be 20-30 breweries, live music, food, and fun times for all.
As a volunteer you will get free admission in return for your efforts, and will be able to attend 1/2 of the festival for free. You will get a volunteer shirt as well.
Volunteers are expected to be there from 10-5, and will do the following:
  • Set up before the event (10-12)
  • Work 1 of 2 shifts during the event (12-2 or 2-4), this  might include pouring beer, distributing water, emptying dump buckets, or otherwise shuttling stuff around as needed.
  • Clean up after the event. (4-5)
  • Please Note: You need to be there the whole time to participate as a volunteer, 
  • You are free to enjoy the festival for the one of the two shifts when you are not working

Hope you didn't drink more than I did over the holidays. I certainly found some very good beers recently. One of the best was the 50/50 2011 Eclipse aged in a Buffalo Trace Barrel. They certainly are brewing some damn fine beers up there in Truckee.

If you know of anyone interested in working here, please pass the word around.

  Hey Gang-
 
 A big THANKS to everyone that showed up, brought food, and brought beer to the Decemberfest tasting. It was definitely a success and I think we should make it an annual event for the club. We had almost 20 different beers. The caliber of food and beers was amazing and it was a fantastic group effort. I believe the top three beers were :
 
          #1- 2010 vintage westvleteren 12
 
          #2- 2011 barrel aged old rasputin
 
          #3- 2010 goose island bourbon county stout
 
 Our first club meeting of 2013 will be held on Jan 19 at 5pm at my house in Campbell. Since this is the first meeting of the year it is that time again for dues. Club dues are $20 per person per year. Couples are $30. we will be collecting at the meeting.
 
 Topics for discussion will be :  -Scheduled meeting dates and times. which work best?
 
                                             -Treasury count and what to do with it.
 
                                             -Upcoming homebrew competitions. Do you want to help?
 
                                             -Upcoming events. Do we want to participate?
    
                                             -Club brew ins and special hop/malt projects. Where/when?

Hello beer enthusiasts.
Apologies if you get this more than once, but I do want to get the word out to you. With a change of management for the CA State Fair competitions, this is likely to be a better competition, one worth entering and worth taking the time to judge. It's not BJCP Sanctioned yet, but that will provide information needed regarding entering and judging. It looks to be an early June entry deadline, and a mid-June judging. Joshua Charlton is the organizer this year.

A few people have asked me about BJCP training.

I don't expect to organize any beer judge training this year as I'm running two competitions.

But as Dave Messink points out, in his attached e-mail.
The organizers of these SF Beer Week BJCP seminars, David Teckam & Brian Cooper, are both master level BJCP judges.
This is a great way to get introduced to BJCP beer evaluation and as they're both good guys, promises to be a pleasant activity.

Entries for the 2013 Mazer Cup International are NOW OPEN!
 
We hope you will enter your meads in the competition, and compete against some of the finest meadmakers in the world. Starting January 11, you can enter electronically on our website at http://www.mazercup.com.
 
We will again be having the awards party on Saturday evening, and will have much mead, food and snacks and good fellowship in abundance. Judges, volunteers and staff will raise a glass in honor of the winners and drink much mead!
 
We have all the information available for you. For more details on the categories available check out the style guidelines at http://mazercup.com/mch_bjcp.htm
Entries may be submitted online at http://www.mazercup.com. Please read the entry rules at http://mazercup.com/mch_enter.htm.  You may use Paypal, a credit card, or check. You do not need to submit separate checks for each entry, one check for all is fine.
 
Entry paperwork and any checks/payment necessary are due by the entry deadline at the address listed at the beginning of this document. Payments must be received prior to the competition, or your entry will not be judged.
 
Entrants are responsible for categorization of their entries and providing all pertinent information requested on the entry form. The Mazer Cup is not responsible for mis-categorized mead and it cannot be changed once you enter, so double-check all your entries before you click send!
 
If the competition organizers determine that there are not enough entries in a given category (minimum 4) , the category will be collapsed into a closely related category.
 
Entries that fail to list the sweetness or carbonation levels will be judged relative to the defaults defined in the most current BJCP Style guidelines.
 
Mead must arrive at the mead shipping address by the entry deadline of March 1, 2013.

The Mead Mixer - Public Mead Tasting Event

Yes, you heard us right - a public mead tasting!! We are working with the meaderies to bring you 72 meads, from all over the world. You'll not find an event like this anywhere!!

The Mead Mixer will be held Friday night after the Commercial Competition and have 2 sessions. The first session will be a VIP session from 7-8:30PM, limited to only 100 people, and will showcase the offered meads with gourmet munchies and food designed to complement the meads. The second session is from 8:30-10:00PM, and is a general admittance session that will have all the meads from the VIP session, along with assorted munchies to soak up the meads. We hope you will enter your meads in the competition, and compete against some of the finest meadmakers in the world. Starting January 11, you can enter electronically on our website at http://mazercup.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=60688d2b7bc322073e4e9c585&id=92767e8db5&e=9bee549998.
 
We will again be having the awards party on Saturday evening, and will have much mead, food and snacks and good fellowship in abundance. Judges, volunteers and staff will raise a glass in honor of the winners and drink much mead!

Entries may be submitted online at http://www.mazercup.com. You do not need to submit separate checks for each entry, one check for all is fine.
 
Entry paperwork and any checks/payment necessary are due by the entry deadline at the address listed at the beginning of this document. Payments must be received prior to the competition, or your entry will not be judged.
 
Entrants are responsible for categorization of their entries and providing all pertinent information requested on the entry form. The Mazer Cup is not responsible for mis-categorized mead and it cannot be changed once you enter, so double-check all your entries before you click send!
 
If the competition organizers determine that there are not enough entries in a given category (minimum 4) , the category will be collapsed into a closely related category.
 
Entries that fail to list the sweetness or carbonation levels will be judged relative to the defaults defined in the most current BJCP Style guidelines.
 
Mead must arrive at the mead shipping address by the entry deadline of March 1, 2013.

The 2013 America's Finest City (AFC) Homebrew Competition is coming up in a few weeks and we need your help to judge and steward this event. AFC is one of the largest competitions in southern CA with over 500 entries last year.

AFC will be judging all of the BJCP defined beer, mead and cider categories.

This year we're expecting between 500 and 600 entries, so we'll need a large contingent of experienced judges and stewards. We expect to be able to take any BJCP tested (even if you don't have your rank yet) judges plus a small number of people who have not yet taken the test but who have worked as a judge or steward in previous BJCP sanctioned competitions. When you login to register please double check that your online information is current (including your judging ranks as it affects your pairings).

AFC is held in 3 sessions and we really appreciate those who sign up on Saturday to work both sessions. Judges and stewards are expected to arrive at the event PRIOR TO:
   6PM on Friday, February 22nd
   9AM on Saturday, February 23rd
   Noon on Saturday, February 23rd

As usual our competition will be held at St Dunstan's church in La Mesa:

The barrels have been removed, but rumor has it the new brewer may bring some back.  I couldn't help but noticing an oatmeal stout going on tap soon, hope it's above 6%abv.!   Currently the best brewery in the South Bay?

2013 HEADQUARTERS EVENTS:
 
 We talked briefly about some potential events to be involved with or set up this year...
 
 -Club brew in- Jim has volunteered his place for a spring 'brew in' where we can bring our brewing setups and have at it.. Date TBD. (April/May ish)
 
 -Bus pub crawl- Do as many have done in the past and head north to some of the best local brews around! We could charter a bus for the day and travel to a few world class breweries. This would end up costing somewhere around $35 - $45 a person, if we can get people interested.
 
 -Steve-o's- Every year Roger's neighbor turns another year older and celebrates with a bang... 7-8 live bands, Margaritas, BBQ, and about Ten homebrewed beers on tap! This will be my 5th year and I wouldn't miss it for the world. This is an all day event in south San Jose. save the date, July 13th!
 
 -NCHF- The Northern California Homebrewers Festival. This is another one not to be missed! About 30 clubs, 300 homebrewers and all kinds of mayhem. Some call it 'beercamp'. Two days of camping, sampling hundreds of homebrews and finding yourself in the sierra foothills. The theme is- Space: the final beer frontier http://www.nchfinfo.org/
 
 - Trip to the Tourist Club- A club outing to just over the Golden Gate to a German 'rest stop' on top of a mountain! Chris had mentioned this a while back and it has intrigued me ever since. You have to pack in your own food but they have cold beers for weary travelers. Apparently it is only available to groups no bigger than 7. http://www.touristclubsf.org/
 
 - Beer and food pairing- An in club competition to see who can match the perfect beer with the perfect dish! How about belgian quad chocolate truffles, smoked porter and salmon, or bacon pancakes with brown ale?
 
 -November/ Decemberfest- The end of the year celebration couldn't have been better. Amazing aged beers and great food. We really made it happen! Lets do it again next year. November or December? 
 
 -Bar collaboration for SF Beerweek 2014- This could be a great way to get the club name out to the southbay while generating some funds for the treasury. The idea is that we set up a 'meet the brewers' event at a local bar/brewery and pour our homebrew alongside the bar and describe and chat about brewing to the people!
 
OUR CLUB
 
 -We touched on setting up a website for the club. Something simple yet effective. I believe Jeff and Jim are looking into this, We will look for an update in February sometime.
 
 -I would like to order Dickies work shirts with the club logo on them. Some of the other clubs have these and they look really slick as well as being high quality. They also really make a staement at events that we set up as a club when we all show up wearing them. Jeff is checking out pricing and vendors. We will have more info on these in the near future. Let me know if you are interested in purchasing one.
 
 -We are looking into ordering some mini imperial pint taster glasses with the club logo etched. Jeff showed us some examples and they look awesome. More info on these soon. Again, let me know if you are interested in purchasing one/some. As with the shirts, the more we order the better the deal. ( typically ) 
 
- I am going to get some decals/stickers made up and maybe some more business cards with the new website on them in the next few months. These will be passed out to all......( dues paing members) jk.
 
 
MYSTERY BEER
 
 This months beer was light in color but complex in flavor. A lot going on.
 
 Jim thought maybe a saison.
 Andy said it seemed Belgian and sweet in the finish.
 Pat tasted clove and noted good clarity.
 Jeff thought it had some bubblegum notes and tasted of pilsner malt.
 Jim also noted clove, but with orange.
 Brian who came in late, had a private sampling of the M.B. He said, "Belgian Blonde?"
 
 BINGO! It was in fact a belgian blonde. Leffe, a classic.
 
 Good job narrowing down the flavors and aromas guys, better luck next time.
 
HOMEBREW
 
 Jeff's 2 hearted clone-
 
Jeff noted he wasn't really pleased with the flavor, a slight earthy and metallic aftertaste. It finished very dry and of course leaned toward the hops (all centennial) It was pretty bitter (lingering) and not balanced well, but it had good clarity and color and not a really bad beer. Thanks Jeff
 
 Brian's wit with pilsner-
 
 This was nice, a big coriander nose but a little sweet in the finish. Carbonation was minimal. We agreed that if itf this had more carbonation, it would be easy to kill a couple of pints! Thanks Brian
 
Andy's doppelbock-
 
 This was also nice. A little sweet but not overpowering. lots of fruit! Pat pointed out Raisin, Brian said apricot. It was slightly roasty, complex, and clean. I noticed some soy sauce flavors, but in a good way if you can imagine. Great beer, thanks for sharing Andy!
 
Brian's session pale-
 
This had equal parts simcoe and amarillo and it showed. Big hop aroma, but only 4.8%. Pat was getting a big tangerine nose, while others were getting resin/piney. I found both evident in flavor and aroma. Reminded me of Lagunitas daytime. I kinda liked it. Thanks Brian 
 
Brian's American Brown-
 
He called it the "kitchen sink" because of all of the random hops in it, but I think they worked well together. About 7%, Big roasty flavors and nice chocolate aromas. It had a slight silkiness and easy drinkability to it. Most of us really enjoyed this one. I would pay for a pint! Thanks brian
 
My Hop Red Rye ale-
 
This was an attempt at a west coast red ale with rye. The rye only comes through as a very subtle spicyness, Jeff noted some pepper notes and sweet in finish. Andy thought it was deceptive for an 8% beer and sweet, but not cloyingly sweet. I just think it has a really big caramel nose and it could be aged a while. Hope it helps.
 
COMMERCIAL BEER
 
Stillnacht-
 Bottle from belgium. This was strong with a lot of fresh fruit like apples and pears. A nice spice and some alcohol heat. very complex. oh yeah, did I mention 12%
 
Oatis-
 Nice chocolate and coffee, roasty flavors. silky, big bodied and smooth. pretty well balanced.
 
 Alesmith IPA-
 This was full of pine, citrus and resin. Nice malt backbone and good bitterness, Strong hop aroma. definitely west coast style. This is one of my favorite IPAs.
 
 Doublejack-
 This was dissapointing. Usually bursting with huge tropical fruit aromas and citrus flavors. This bottle was mainly bitter and somewhat dull. Still descent DIPA, but a dissapointment to loyal followers.
 
 Infinium-
 This is the collaboration between Sam Adams and Weinenstephen. This bottle had been in my fridge for over a year. It was very carbonic, very tart, and had an unusually odd aroma. very cidery. Flavors didn't seem to work well at all.
 
 Thanks again to those who showed up, paid dues and brought beer. Let me know what types of events you are interested in so we can concentrate our efforts onto a few of them.

Classic Geueze at Wine Cellar in Santa Clara. For the uninitiated, this is a
rare beer to get unless you pay through the nose. They're selling them at a

Hey folks, it's that time again. Time for the 2013 World Cup of Beer. The World Cup of Beer is the annual homebrew competition put on by the Bay Area Mashers. Stewarding enables you to take part and help out, taste what will likely be upwards of 600 different beers, and sit with highly skilled judges and see how beer judging works.

So, this year we're going to do 2 days of preliminaries instead of 1 like we did last year. What this means is that I will need the normal lineup of stewards for the finals but I'll also need stewards (not as many) for two other days before the finals. So what I'd like is for anyone who wishes to steward the finals, please also sign up for one of the prelims days as well. It'll really help and hey, more beer to taste!

Where?
We'll be doing the prelims and finals at Linden St. Brewery again.

When ?
The first prelims are in 3 weeks.

Prelims 1 : Sunday March 3rd. 8:30am - around lunch time
Prelims 2 : Saturday March 9th 8:30am - around lunch time
Finals : Saturday March 16th 8:15am - around lunch time followed by the party

Judging starts promptly at 9:00am so we'll need a few minutes to go over the process, eat some bagels, get everyone their score sheets and table assignments etc.

Just a Heads up, there will NOT be a meeting held this month. Many members have already expressed they will not be available and I will be out of town. Sorry for the inconvenience.We will definitely be having a meeting in March.
 
On the bright side, A brew in is getting scheduled for sometime in May
 
                            New club workshirts and hoodies are in the works

I heard about this yesterday. It seems cool, but if its where the address shows, it's going to be right on market. Makes parking a little difficult, but it should be worth it when it's open. Looking forward to it.
