Panel addresses migrant worker issues at home and abroad
Bangkok Migrant labour is a mainstay of the Thai economy. It is
estimated that there are currently up to two million migrant workers in
Thailand . In the past, most of Thailand 's migrant workers came from
China to work as wage labourers on state projects and private
enterprises. Today, the majority come from Burma , Laos and Cambodia .
Not only do these workers perform some of Thailand 's most dangerous and
difficult jobs, they do so with little or no protection of their labour
rights. Moreover, migrant workers often earn only half of what Thais
receive for the same work. While the Thai economy benefits from these
circumstances because of continuing investment in industries employing
cheap migrant labour, the Thai government has failed to enforce domestic
and international law regarding these workers' treatment. Full
detail.
