Any interpreter dealing with 90 min. classes in high school? Alot of high
schools in NC, have 90 min, classes. This can be difficult for the
interpreter if the classes are mostly lecture. Anyone face this problem at
the secondary level?

Hi, my name is Marti Slaughter and I'm an interpreter at the University
of Georgia. We have three full time staff interpreters, and we
contract out classes that we can't cover with staff.
We put two interpreters in a class if it is more than one class period,
but if there is a lot of hands on work for the student (i.e. not much
interpreting), we just go with one interpreter. If it's a normal class
length, but the information is very technical, we will have two
intepreters. These are loose policies, though. What I mean is if
before classes start, it's decided that one interpreter is sufficient,
then that intepreter gets into class and really sees the need for a
team, we team (and vice versa). Am I making any sense?
**Atlanta is signed with the same motion as "member", but with an "A"
hand shape. And the knuckle of the thumb points toward the chest.
Athens (where UGA is located) is just an "A" shaken (like an "F" for
furniture).
Good to join the list!!

Hello to all and look forward to joining in this new discussion group!
Hi
I'm from North Carolina and my experiences in the post secondary settings is
that the community of technical schools will pay for two interpreters, if
the class is over a 2 hour period. But unfortunately, I am not sure if that
is common in other states.
I'd love to hear what the other states are doing!!
Thanks

Hello! My name is Carla. I work as a ed terp in North Carolina. In my
school system here are the answers to your questions
> How much do you get paid by your school district? Full salary?
Hourly rate?
Full Salary starting at $17,190. This is 10 month pay, of course. You
can opt to have your 10 month pay spread over 12 months.
> How many hours per week? State # hours of interpreting and # hours of
> non-interpreting such as break and paperwork. After school
activities?
My contract is for 7 hours per day=35 hours a week. 6.5 hours of my day
is interpreting, the other time 30 min=preperation time. You must have
a sperate contract for doing after school activites. They make you feel
bad if you ask for someone else. I say no thanks, I don't want overuse!
> Is it including benefits?
Yes, medical, dental, etc.
> Does your school district offer trainings for interpreters, just like
what
> RID, local RID chapters or others offer?
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah
> Any additional comments would appreciated me very much. Thank you.
What else do you want to know?

Good thoughts. Thanks. Funny you should say what you did about the
professionalism and our skills immulated by the students. So true. I recall
seeing a particular "tick" in one student's signing.
I later noted that their interpreter exhibited the same tick just out of bad
habit. Interesting thing to pick-up. So we do need to be thinking about
that.
I remember once hearing a seasoned interpreter say we should continue to
act the part of the professional even though we are not treated as such.
One
day we will be rewarded according to our efforts. I think change is coming
and for some perhaps not soon enough but for others it's a welcome friend.
Good chatting with you. -PR

As far as working conditions - within the school dist., I assume it's

Altho, our district is gaining alot of support,as of late, from the

Pam,
Hi Tim here in Portland....regarding your question
>Just another thought. What is the going rate for those in the post-secondary
>setting? Do all colleges pay for two interpreters if the assignmentor class
>goes over an hour?
> Pam
Here at Portland Community College, we just finished a 3 year battle to raise the rate to $20/hour for staff terps....they work 25-30 hr/week........
regarding the 2 hour team thing....I look at each class individually and decide to team or not to team based on
Subject matter, length of class, teacher's rate of speech, terps schedule that day, percent of the class that is down time....
Peace Tim

This is a US thing. It is based in NC. But folks just love to know what you
guys are doing in Sunny Florida. In NC, interpreter salary is decided by
individual county school systems. That's a joke. One large school systems pays
interpreters about $20,000 but the county right next door pays interpreters
$14,000.!
In Va. the average pay in the rural areas is $8,000!
Is the grass always greener on the other side?

pay shouldn't be much of a topic since we all entered this field to get rich right and now that we've made it..........
Peace Tim

Me too. This should be great once the word is out and we can actually share
our concerns in a neutral non-threatening format.

Hey Ya'll,
Just curious if this is a Florida "thang" or are we going to be able to
network
with terps from around the US? WHEW! Can you imagine what a
powerful network this will be!!! Glad to be on board. Let's start a
really hot topic like....oh, gee, let me think....hmmmm....what's a number
one issue amongst the interpreters in K-12? Could it be being classified
in the Union with mechanics, plant maintenance and bus drivers? NAH.
What about job descriptions? "and other related duties" like bus duty
while the student sits without an interpreter...NAH.
Don't really have any problems with professional development since
$300 stipends are pretty much common. (snikering)

Good morning... I am new to this Listserv cuz I just joined yesterday. I
have been subscribing several Listservs for the last 12 months. At this
moment, we, the committee are working on our state's interpreter bill
(Nevada). We are seeking for school interpreters' comments and so, I would
be appreciated if you answer the following questions below...
How much do you get paid by your school district? Full salary? Hourly rate?
How many hours per week? State # hours of interpreting and # hours of
non-interpreting such as break and paperwork. After school activities?
Is it including benefits?
Does your school district offer trainings for interpreters, just like what
RID, local RID chapters or others offer?
Any additional comments would appreciated me very much. Thank you.

do my best to spread the news!...I'm certain that there will be alot of info
shared, and am looking so forward to seeing this fly! We, as educational terps,
are many times considered to be the "left-overs" - which we know isn't the
truth. We are an unique blend that have issues all of our own. It will be
wonderful to FINALLY, get to share without judgement, some of the "predicaments"
we sometimes face in the educational setting (or should that be "stuck in"??
lol)I'm eager to see many responses from fellow-terps in our field! yeeeee
haaaaa !!! 8-) Lynn
