welcome. Chief Charles Ramsey was the guest speaker at the last meeting.

IF YOU APPRECIATE RECEIVING COMMUNIT-E. . .
Please help me to reach more of our neighbors. I would be very grateful
if you would print out the item below, between the *'s and distribute a
copy of this small blurb to each house on your block. Although my
distribution list is nearly 1,000, many residents still are not aware of
COMMUNIT-E. The better our network, the better informed we can all be.
Thank you.
Kathy Smith

IF YOU ALREADY RECEIVE COMMUNIT-E, IGNORE THIS...
However, if you are not on the mailing list, you might want to contact
me at Ksmith1804@... to be placed on the COMMUNIT-E mailing
list.

COMMUNIT-E is a free community newsletter for the area that includes
Police Service Area 202. This is AU Park, Friendship Heights, and
Tenleytown. It comes out approximately once a week and contains
information about local crime and problems, city services, community
meetings, neighborhood events, items for sale or give-away, etc. Much of
the material is submitted by neighborhood residents. One of the most
popular features is the "Community Bulletin Board" where residents swap
tips on home repair specialists, among other items. COMMUNIT-E also
serves as a rapid alert by the police or other neighbors if a serious
threat occurs.

Back issues of COMMUNIT-E can be viewed on the ANC3F web site at
www.anc3f.org.

Thank you.

WARNING AND REQUEST FOR HELP FROM 2D POLICE
From: Pavukmatt@...
Some of the members of Tenleytown Neighbors Assn. have had bushes and
trees vandalized by someone tearing their limbs off. The reports come
from the following areas: Reno Road, Albemarle and 39th (2 incidents),
4400 block of 38th (2 incidents), 39th and Yuma, 3700 block of Alton
Place (at least 3 incidents), 3800 block of Warren, and someone reported
that some newly-planted trees in Fort Reno Park had been severed at the
base and pushed over to the ground. One person believes it is a man
living on Yuma Street. Another person reported that their housepainter
caught this man in the act and that he said the bushes were infringing
on
public space.
Cheryl Browning, President, Tenleytown Neighbors Association
------------

From KS -- Were the above incidents reported to the police? If not, I
would urge the victims to do so and make sure to contact Lt. Mark Carter
at MPDCPSA202@....

MORE ON CHECK AND FRAUD
From: "Radack, Jesselyn A" <Jesselyn.A.Radack@...>
Today I called the MPD Check and Fraud Unit and somebody actually
answered the phone! I dealt with Officer Treadwell, who explained that
I was not really the victim of "fraud," but was the victim of "identity
theft." Technically, MB&A (A bank that issues credit cards) is the
victim of fraud because it's the one that would bear the cost if someone
improperly opened an account with my personal info. In any event, I
told him I wanted to do a report, so he wrote up an Incident Report for
me. I called MB&A with this, and they are faxing the relevant
information to the police.

Kathy, you may want to tell your readers that you can place a "fraud
security alert" on your credit file if this happens to you. That means
that you must be called any time someone tries to open a line of credit
in your name. The numbers are:
Equifax (1-800) 525-6285
Experian (1-888) 397-3742
Transunion (1-800) 680-7289

-------------------
From KS: If you are unable to reach the MPD Check and Fraud Unit, here
are some police officials to call in addition to the 2D officials I
mentioned several issues ago:
Lt. Eugene Bentley -- 727-9020
Captain Victor Brito -- 727-7003 or 724-4340
They are directly responsible for the Check and Fraud Unit.

REGARDING DOOR-TO-DOOR SOLICITATION

**** From: Kathryn Ray <kcrdlb@...>
Do you know if it is true that anyone who solicits money door-to-door
must have a solicitation permit with him/her at the time of
solicitation?

**** From: "tsilv@..." <tsilv@...> (Tina Silverman)
There have been these door knockers on my street. I never open so I
can't describe anyone. I am in the 5300 block of 43rd Street.

MORE ON THE U.S. MAIL

**** From: "Landis Vance" <lmvance@...>
Re: mail problems. I have had similar problems and have gotten bills 6-8
weeks after they were mailed and AFTER I missed the payments. Of course,
the creditors don't believe my story about not getting the bills.

****From: FJHDCME@...
I read with interest and a little relief that I am not the only resident
experiencing long delays in receiving mail. Some of the delays cause
real problems. My DC auto registration and parking sticker was mailed
by DMV on January 15. Both expire today, January 28. To save the
hassle of tickets, I had to go to the bank this morning, get a copy of
my cancelled check (my bank statement and checks have not yet arrived as
they should have five days ago), go down to DMV in Georgetown and wait
for 45 mins to get the stickers. Merck Medco sent me two prescriptions
and told me they should arrive on January 11. I got them January 23,
the day that both ran out. And on January 21 we received a Christmas
card mailed in DC on December 13. I appreciate that the anthrax scare
caused serious problems for USPS but isn't it about time that they have
figured out a way to correct them? Frank Haendler

**** From: "Jim Derstine" <jrderstine@...>
I, too have received at least 8-10 pieces of U.S. Mail within the last 3
weeks or so postmarked in early December. Most were first class and
about 2 were publications that were a month to 7 weeks late. One of the
post cards was so brittle that it actually broke like "peanut brittle"
candy in clear cut lines. Other mail was simply very "yellowed".

**** From: look4me@... (Vicki Lambert)
I, too, have been getting 1st class mail postmarked in early November. I
have had many bills delivered at least 6 weeks late and I have had to
buy from newsstands journals I subscribe to (and need to read as they
come out) since they do not arrive at my house until the next issue is
already stale. I have friends in other zips who are receiving them when
they should. Nobody at Friendship cares. It is hard not to believe
they have a major problem with management over there. I don't know how
we go about getting something done about it but it is imperative that we
do. All manner of important documents are being misdelivered and lost.
Where can we turn?

RESPONSE TO QUESTION ABOUT AIRPLANES

**** From: Carolmath@... (Carol Cameron)
What you are hearing are the military planes that have been flying over
all major US cities on a regular basis (but especially heavily over DC
and NYC) since the Sept. 11 attack. These flights may sound commercial,
but if you listen carefully you will hear the sound of two planes
together. They fly in duos. There has been some discussion of cutting
back on these military overflights, but so far no change has been
decided upon.

**** From KS: Today's Washington Post Metro Section has a story about
airplane noise in the area. Much of the story deals with National
Airport, but it also mentions the military planes and a local
organization called "Citizens for the Abatement of Aircraft Noise Inc."

COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD

**** From: "Marci Nielsen" <Mnielsen@...>
My husband and I are moving back to the Midwest to be near our family
after the birth of our twin daughters. We currently have two wonderful
cats (ages 6 & 7 years, all shots updated) _ in fact, one of them is
more like a dog than a cat he is so friendly. The other is very sweet
and she is a bit shy. Unfortunately, most of my husband's family is
very allergic to cats, making it difficult for them to come to our home
to help us w/ the twins. We would like to leave them w/ a good home
here before we move (I will not be able to give them to a shelter). Is
there anybody out there who wants two sweet, well-behaved, loving
kitties? Please e-mail me at mnielsen@... or call 202-637-5157.
Thanks.

at 301-424 8786.

**** From: Jacoby@... (Mary Jacoby)
Like the anonymous neighbor who complained about Delbe Home Services, I
also had a terrible experience with them. I asked them to send a plumber
to fix a leaky upstairs bathtub drain. The plumbers did not come on the
appointed day, nor did they call to explain why. Instead, they showed up
on a Saturday morning while I was still asleep with a newborn. My
husband let them in. When I woke up, I discovered the plumbers had put a
temporary fix on the drain and charged me something like $375. They said
a permanent fix would require replacing the whole pipe, which they
assumed I would not want to do because it required tearing out the
ceiling in the bathroom below to get at it. In fact, the bathroom below
was scheduled to be completely ripped apart in a renovation a few weeks
later - which they would have know about, had they kept their original
appointment. I did in fact end up completely replacing the pipe just
weeks later. I explained all this to Delbe and they knocked off $50 for
the missed appointment but insisted I pay the rest. In short, a very
aggravating experience.

LETTER FROM RESIDENT RE: REZONING WASHINGTON CLINIC
From: "Ellis, Susan" <sellis@...>
January 28, 2002
To DC Council members, ANC commissioners. Stonebridge Associates, and
others concerned with rezoning the Washington Clinic

Subject: Opposition to rezoning Washington Clinic site

I am opposed to rezoning the Washington Clinic property and the adjacent
part of the Lisner Home site (Western Ave. and Military Rd., NW)to
permit the building of a large apartment building.

I live at 42nd Street and Military Road -- near the proposed rezoning
site.

The proposed apartment building is out of proportion with the
residential nature of the neighborhood and would exacerbate the serious
traffic problems that already exist on Military Road as exemplified by
an estimated one collision a week at Military and 42nd St., many of
which I have witnessed.

It would also impact very negatively on residential parking. I rarely
find parking in front of my house now, and that is a great
inconvenience, particularly as I have a knee replacement and other
physical disabilities due to arthritis.

The proposed apartment building would also obliterate one of the only
open spaces in the neighborhood, the area between the Washington Clinic
and the Lisner Home, an area used by Metro commuters, dog-walkers and
families.

Much of the development in our area since I moved here in 1974 is
welcome as we can walk to shopping, but enough is enough! The charm of
Chevy Chase, D.C. is that it is a small, friendly neighborhood only 20
minutes or so from downtown. Let's not destroy this rare quality and
put in its place high density rezoning for no other reason than economic
profit for a few.

Thank you for considering my objection to the rezoning of this site.
Susan Ellis

AND FINALLY . . .
Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which
produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very
little, which made him rather frail and with his odd diet, he suffered
from bad breath. This made him:
A super calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.

WARNING AND REQUEST FOR HELP FROM 2D POLICE
From: "Detective Neil W. Jones" <nwj2813@...>

TO: PSA 202 Residents:
This area has been plagued with burglaries recently. The 4500 block of
Van Ness St. NW was targeted the first week of the new year. You have
some criminals out there who think they can out-smart us.

Anyone living in the area of 45th & Van Ness who had some teenagers
knock on their door 12/31/01 or 1/1/02 -- I'd like to hear from you.

Here are some tips I think can help deter crime in your neighborhood:
Knocking on doors to ascertain if someone is home is a tactic used by
most burglars. First, most burglars do not want a confrontation.
Second, the career criminals know that breaking into a house that is
unoccupied means that if caught and convicted they will serve less time
in prison. In addition, some of these guys have been working your area
for a while. They know just what to say to win the citizen's trust.

In my opinion, the best way to deter the "bad element" from taking
advantage of trusting citizens is to put all of PSA 202 on alert. Any
neighbor who has someone knock on their door during the daytime hours or
sees anyone going door to door should contact the police immediately.
Report this as suspicious behavior since most homes are unoccupied
during the day! Also, give the dispatcher a physical & clothing
description, last known direction of travel, and mode of travel (foot,
bike, car, etc.). You should especially
be wary of men with backpacks and teenagers during school hours. Any
person going door to door for legitimate reasons should not mind being
identified by the police.

I hope this bit of information helps. To rid the PSA of potential
burglars we must work as a team: increased patrols in the residential
neighborhoods during the day as well as citizens reporting suspicious
behavior. If your calls go unanswered, or police officers
are not seen in the neighborhoods, contact your PSA Lieutenant.

Det. Neil Jones 202-282-0043 or nwj2813@...

E-MAIL ADDRESSES FOR 2D POLICE OFFICIALS
Recently a resident asked how to get in touch with several 2D officials.

in the CC: line, not the whole address.

MORE ON DEALING WITH CREDIT CARD FRAUD

**** From: MPDC2DCMDR@... (Peter Newsham)
I will bring these issues regarding Check and Fraud to that attention of
Cmdr. Barret and A/Chief Broadbent. This is not the first time that I
have heard this complaint.

**** From: Kathy Smith <Ksmith1804@...>
  To: MPDC2DCMDR@...
Commander Newsham, I'm glad you're bringing it to their attention. I
have a gut feeling, however, that it may be too few detectives chasing
too many cases -- the problem with wanting most officers on the street.

The larger issue here is that I want residents to understand that there
are other options than just waiting for a phone call that doesn't come.
I believe that if most people understand where to call when the first
call doesn't get results, there will be a more efficient flow of
information and people will not feel so helpless waiting...
But please do bring it to their attention.

RESPONSE TO ABOVE :
From: MPDC2DCMDR@...
I agree, and I have seen that many people are reluctant to talk to an
officer's supervisor. There is a certain fear in dealing with the
police. I continuously push that same message, and I do agree with you.

**** From: Gucurtin@...
This happened to us about 7 years ago and we're still dealing with
it..but only when I apply for a new credit card. At the time we got in
touch with TRW and they made sure that any new accounts applied for
would be checked by phone with us first. We never even contacted the
local police. (TRW's a big credit checking company. I think they're
located in Texas. Any bank or credit card company can get you the phone
number.)

**** From: Joanne Capper <jcapper71@...>
Your message re: check and fraud prompted me to send you this note re: a
recent incident that I'm quite disturbed about and wonder if anyone else
has had a similar incident and is willing to pursue a collective legal
claim against the offender.

A few months ago I began receiving two magazines that I had not
subscribed to and wondered how they arrived. I figured that maybe a
relative had subscribed for me, but didn't pay much attention. After 3
months of receiving these magazines, I noticed two billings on my First
USA Visa card for each magazine, with an 800 number next to each
billing. I was furious and immediately called the 800 number and of
course it was a recording offering me the option of accepting or
rejecting the charges and continuing the subscription. I didn't wait
around for a "real person" option, but probably did try the "0" option.
I then called First USA - the number on the credit card statement - and
finally found out that the company that sent the magazines is a
subsidiary of First USA and that they participated in this instance of
what I feel is fraud. It's also a Marriott collaboration, where you get
Marriott Hotel points with each dollar charged to the card. Of course
I'm canceling the card and informing Marriott.

I had absolutely no luck with Check and Fraud, although they were polite
and gave me the number of the FBI - who they said was responsible for
this sort of thing. The FBI gave me to the Secret Service!! All said
that this activity may not be ethical, but is not against the law!!! I
asked about a class action suit and the SS person said that that would
be possible. While this is not an egregious crime - I'd rather have
this than be mugged - it is something that collective action could
probably put a stop to. I'd like to know if anyone else has had this
happen to them and if they'd like to pursue it.

PROBLEMS WITH THE U.S. MAIL
From: "Sally Haskell" <shaskell@...>
Last week we received pieces of mail that were sent in mid-November and
mid-December. some of them had been through one of the "sanitizing"
processes which I recognize from processed mail at my government
office. The sanitizing process causes the mail to yellow and become
brittle. Yet the post office official line does not acknowledge that
this is happening. The USPS website even states that private mail in
Washington is unaffected, under the FAQ menu. I called the USPS contact
number and was told that my mail is not affected. I have tried calling
the Friendship post office, but can't even get the phone answered.

An official acknowledgement that our mail is affected would be helpful
when I explain to my daughter's college admissions offices that we
didn't know about January events or missing application items. I wonder
if others have noticed.

--------
From KS -- We received a piece of mail like this about two or three
weeks ago. Clearly it had been sanitized.

SOME RESPONSES TO "SKIN HEADS" AND WILSON HIGH

**** From: Slam13@...
While I abhor the fact that anyone is being targeted for any reason --
the flags being torn down -- I seriously doubt that "skinheads" at
Tenley are to blame. First of all, as a Wilson mother who uses the
Tenleytown subway at that time, I know a number of the kids who hang
there. They are black and white, male and female, and none that I know
are skinheads. They hang there to pass time before some go home on the
subway while others walk. I'm not saying its not a student, but unless
you have more proof please don't accuse/attack the kids.

**** From: "Thompson, David" <David.Thompson@...>
Woodrow Wilson Senior High School takes pride in its diverse student
body. The school has taken great steps to ensure that we are good
neighbors. Our staff contains several professionals who deal
specifically with hate, and intolerance. We have several teachers whose
entire job is to deal with local school and community concerns. Wilson
has several clubs, organizations, and classes that include, Alternatives
to Violence, Peer Mediation, Peer Counseling, Gay, Straight, Bisexual,
Lesbian Parent Teacher Student Alliance, Male and Female Initiative
clubs, and numerous international organizations.

Wilson SHS takes pride in it's academic achievements, with four National
Merit Semi-finalists, high ranking in the Washington Post's most
challenging high schools, and many early acceptances from Ivy-league
schools (including three from Harvard). We do not take the education of
our students lightly. Last year our school gave 580 Advanced Placement
(AP) exams to 232 students in 21 subjects. It is unfortunate that
because we are the Public High School in the neighborhood, that we get
blamed for all of the "evil" that occurs here. As a resident of AU Park
and teacher at Wilson SHS, I take great pride in where I live and work.

I am curious as to how you reached the conclusion that the "skin heads"
congregated outside the Tenley Metro Station, were in fact "skin heads"
and were from Wilson. I have consulted several of my colleagues,
counselors, administrators, and students, and none of them seem to know
who these "skin heads" are. Is it your conclusion that Wilson is the
home of the "skin heads" due to its proximity to the Tenleytown Metro
station, or do you have some other evidence? Interestingly enough, many
students from other high schools in the area use the Tenleytown Metro
station and hang out where these "skin heads" do. Many of these
students, with different personal preferences, attend the Georgetown Day
School, Sidwell Friends, National Cathedral School, and St Albans. As
you may or may not be aware, a large number of residents of this
neighborhood do not attend Wilson, but must travel by Subway to reach
their schools.

Wilson is doing all that it can to create a reputation for academics,
for being a good neighbor. We know that we do fall short at times.
Please do not hesitate to contact the school (282-0120), our principal,
or me when you have concerns. We here at Wilson would like to work with
you so that something of this kind does not continue or happen again.
We are very proactive and do respond to the communities concerns.
Sincerely,
David G. Thompson

CLARIFICATION ON RECYCLING MAGAZINES, STYROFOAM, ETC.
From: Michele.Wolin@...
I know they take glossy magazines ("typical" magazines, catalogs, Sunday
paper advertising inserts). Just put them in paper bags or tie them,
like you do with newspapers. They can be mixed in with newspapers,
i.e., you don't need to put them in separate bags. They also take
office paper, so from that I suspect they would take journals
("non-glossy" magazines).
They also take corrugated cardboard. If you want to call and ask, their
number is 645-8245.
Another recycling tip: most mailing stores, like Mailboxes, will gladly
take styrofoam peanuts.

AIRPLANE NOISE
From: "Gus Mehrdad" <gmehrdad@...>
I have been noticing that after the 9/11 tragedy, AU neighborhood has
been getting a lot of airplane traffic. In addition to the Ronald Reagan
Airport traffic which stops around 11 pm, we are getting airplane
traffic from Dulles Airport usually about 2 am to 7 am. This is getting
really annoying. I was wondering if you knew who to write to or if
anybody else has been taking any action on this issue also. Please let
me know.
Thanks, Gus Mehrdad.

PARKING GARAGE
From: Donald E McMullin <dmcmullin@...>
FROM THE DESK OF FATHER HART (From St. Ann's Church Bulletin - 20 Jan
'02)
" _ it appears that American University is planning to build a 250
space parking garage and an expanded ground parking lot on the south
side of Yuma Street and the east side of 42nd Street. The Zoning Board
has given the University permission to build in spite of the fact that
an agreement by which American University obtained the property from
Immaculata High School, strictly forbade them from building any new
structures on the site. It seems that the Zoning Board has decided to
ignore this contingency clause by which American University is legally
bound. The entrance to the garage will be on Yuma Street, almost
directly opposite the alley by which our children enter and exit St.
Ann's Academy. If you have had the misfortune to be on Yuma Street when
school lets out, you know well the bottleneck that is created by the
buses and cars that must come to a standstill when the children are
dismissed. My concern, and a concern that is shared by our Parish
Pastoral Council, is 250 and more cars entering and exiting the proposed
garage will only exacerbate this problem and prove more dangerous to our
children. Several of our parishioners and neighbors have been actively
fighting this proposal. In view of our defeat in terms of the Zoning
Board ruling, we are turning directly to you to enlist your support
against American University's refusal to abide by the legal agreement
between them and the citizens of Tenleytown. If you are willing to go on
record as opposing the building of a parking garage on Yuma Street, or
to see how you can help in this serious problem, I urge you to contact
Mr. Tony Byrne, 4205 Warren Street, NW, telephone: 202-966-8759. He and
AI Peter, one of our parishioners, are well acquainted with the
development and status of American University's proposal. In appealing
this ruling we have to be able to demonstrate that a large portion of
our parish is opposing the parking garage. It would also be of great
help to generate some publicity about this proposal. If you have any
"ins" with people in the DC Government or in the news media, I would
appreciate very much your informing them of this situation. _ "

PUBLIC NOTICE FROM THE U.S. ARMY
"Henry, Theodore J NAB02" <Theodore.J.Henry@...>
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District
Spring Valley Restoration Advisory Board
Membership Solicitation

The Department of the Army recognizes the importance of stakeholder
participation in the Defense Environmental Restoration Program.
Therefore, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District
established the Spring Valley Restoration Advisory Board (RAB). The RAB
was created to improve public participation in the environmental
restoration of the Formerly Used Defense Site property at Spring Valley.

The RAB currently has two vacancies. Let this notice serve as
solicitation for applications to fill those vacancies.

The RAB includes community members who reflect the diverse interests of
the local community. RAB members are asked to review and comment on
plans and technical documents relating to the ongoing environmental
studies and restoration activities at Spring Valley. RAB members have
the opportunity to provide comments that may accelerate the
restoration. Members also serve as liaisons between the community and
the Baltimore District and need to be available to meet with community
members and/or groups. Community RAB members receive no compensation
for their service. RAB meetings are open to the public.

Application forms can be obtained by calling the Baltimore District
Public Affairs Office at 410-962-2809 or logging onto the Spring Valley
Website at:
http://www.nab.usace.army.mil/projects/WashingtonDC/springvalley.htm
Once on the web site "click" the Restoration Advisory Board button and
then the RAB Application Form button.

Members will be expected to serve one or two-year terms and attend
monthly RAB meetings. Forms will be reviewed by the RAB Selection
Committee, which consists of Spring Valley residents. This committee
will then make recommendations to the Col. Charles J. Fiala, Jr.,
Commander of the Baltimore District, who will review and approve the
list in consultation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and
the Washington DC Department of Health.

Applications must be received no later than February 6, 2002 to be
considered for selection.

PROBLEM WITH CONTACTING MPD'S CHECK & FRAUD UNIT

In the issue of COMMUNIT-E that I put out today, I suggested calling
MPD's Check and Fraud Unit at 727-4159. This was in response to the
question of how to report credit card fraud, identity theft, etc. This
issue came up because a resident had attempted to report such an
incident via phone, presumably to Police Communications, and said she
got the run-around.

I just got a second e-mail from the same resident's husband:
"Hi Kathy. My wife called the number you suggested and left two
messages. No one has returned her call." (I had given him this phone
number several days ago, before this newsletter came out, but I don't
know when she tried to call Check & Fraud.)

I again called 2D and spoke to Lt. Joseph Trippi, who is in charge of
the 2D Detectives. His solution, for the time being until this problem
is fixed, is the following:

First, try to contact Check & Fraud Unit on 727-4159. If you don't reach
anyone and if you live in 2D, call the 2D Detectives office on 282-0043
and ask to speak to "an official". It is important that you ask for "an
official"; don't try to give a report to the first person who answers
the phone, even if he or she is a detective. Explain that you already
tried to contact Check and Fraud and no one answered or returned you
call.

I would add that if you still don't get a response, contact any or all
of the following in 2D:
1.) Lt. Mark Carter, 282-0038, MPDCPSA202@...
2.) One of the 2D Captains on 282-0032, whoever's on duty. If you send
an e-mail, send it to Captain Anthony Poteat on Apoteat @aol.com
3.) Commander Peter Newsham on 282-0042, MPDC2DCMDR@...

It may take a little while to get connected to a Check & Fraud
detective, but hopefully you won't be left in limbo until someone
answers your call if you try these other routes when you can't reach
Check & Fraud.

DEALING WITH IDENTITY THEFT
From: Daniel Radack <radack@...>
Recently, someone tried to apply for a credit card using my wife's
maiden name and her social security number. They did this twice and
listed an address in SW DC/. The credit card companies contacted my wife
to verify - that's how we found out. My wife tried to file a police
report but got the run around on the phone. Where should she file a
police report in DC?

ANSWER FROM KS: Dan, I spoke to one of the detectives at 2D and he
suggested you call the MPD's Check and Fraud Unit at 727-4159. Speak to
one of this unit's detectives.

Also, you might want to check out the website of the Identity Theft
Resource Center at www.idtheftcenter.org. Linda Foley is the Executive
Director. Identity theft is a growing crime and we all need to be
careful about what we toss in the trash or tell anyone over the phone. I
have heard of instances where car thieves used identity theft to obtain
duplicate keys to cars from car dealerships. They then went to those
cars where they were parked on the street and drove them away.

I'd also suggest: Don't carry your checkbook with you. Just put a few
checks in your wallet and have the numbers of those checks noted
somewhere else. Don't leave checkbooks in plain sight in your house when
workmen or other visitors are around. I've heard of people stealing one
or two checks from the back of a checkbook. The owner didn't know until
they were cashed.

Check monthly credit card bills very carefully to make sure every
purchase is legit. Strangers all over the place see our credit card
numbers. The system works because of general honesty but mostly because
of extreme vigilance on the part of the credit card owner.

IF YOU DON'T WANT PEOPLE COMING TO YOUR DOOR, SOLICITING . . .
From time to time I hear about or observe strangers at our doors asking
for money for various causes. They keep coming back because they are
encouraged by being rewarded for their efforts. There's nothing wrong
with saying "NO". In fact, most of these folks expect that the answer
will be NO. They are pleasantly surprised when we give them something. I
encourage you to consistently say NO and to give only to those causes
that you choose and initiate contact with. You'd be doing your neighbors
a favor.

RESPONSE REGARDING THEFTS AND VANDALISM ON ALBEMARLE
From: "V. Ploumpis" <vploumpis@...> (Valerie Ploumpis)
Thanks for including information about our flag thefts (8 so far) in the
most recent newsletter.

But the most significant element of our problem was left -- we are a
two-mom, two-child family who lives at the corner of Reno and Albemarle
and it is our rainbow flags (a symbol of gay freedom) that keep getting
stolen. There is nothing random about these thefts at all -- neighbors
up and down the street have American flags, Santa flags, etc., and
theirs are never stolen.

Last night, by latest example, I got home at 11:30 pm and our flag
(still on the pole) had been ripped out of the bracket and thrown on the
lawn. My partner and I firmly believe that the skinheads are targeting
us because we are a gay family -- no one else is being harassed except
others they don't like (diplomats, for example).

The reason that the wide sidewalk in front of the Tenleytown Metro is a
huge and informal hang-out for skinheads is because many attend Wilson
High School.

HELP FOR A DESERVING COLLEGE STUDENT
From: "Stephen Posniak" <sposniak@...>
Alexios Monopolis, a Junior at Dartmouth College, is working on an
internship at the National Geographic Society through the end of March.
Alexios is an experienced outdoorsman and camper, so, as he puts it, "I
(i.e. his family) live outside Baltimore and plan on going back there
most weekends, so basically all I'm looking for is a floor to sleep on
and a roof over my head from mid January to the end of March." (He is
hoping to find place near the Van Ness UDC, Tenleytown, or Friendship
Heights Metrorail stations.)

On September 11, Alexios was driving to Dulles Airport to depart for a
fall term conservation project in the Greek and (former) Yugoslav
wilderness when he heard about the attacks on the radio. His flight was
cancelled, so Alexios decided to take a train up to New York and try to
help.

When he got to the World Trade Center site, Alexios was quickly enlisted
in one of the ad-hoc rescue teams. As described in the Dartmouth
newspaper, "the manner in which the buildings fell created many pockets
and open spaces where survivors could have been,..To investigate these
pockets, volunteers first removed buckets of debris, and when they could
remove no more, someone would be lowered into the caves caused by the
wreckage. His lean physique meant that Monopolis was often the one sent
on one of these dangerous searches. `Since I always happened to be the
skinniest individual on the scene, I was the one that they would tie a
lifeline to and lower into the rubble." You can read the complete
article about Alexios's experience at:

the Avalon could re-open around year's end.

OPPOSITION TO PROPOSED ZONING CHANGE OF WASHINGTON CLINIC SITE
From: "Betsey Kuhn" <bkuhn@...>
We live at 4211 Military Rd. NW and our property abuts the proposed
development of the Washington Clinic by Stonebridge Associates. We would
like to register our opposition to the proposed zoning change. We agree
with the reasons cited by our neighbors, Elinor Green and Joel Hunter.
The proposed apartment building is out of proportion with residential
character of the neighborhood, the serious traffic problems that
currently exist on Military Rd. will only be exacerbated, and the
Maryland-side development needs to be considered.

We would also like to mention another issue. The proposed apartment
house will destroy one of the only open spaces in the neighborhood, the
area between the Washington Clinic and the Lisner Home and the abandoned
Belt Road. This area is heavily used by people going to the Metro,
dog-walkers and families. It also supports the commercial development
in the area. I often see husbands and wives with children waiting for
their spouses who are shopping in the area. This area functions as a
refuge for many people.

For all these reasons, we oppose the massive apartment being proposed to
replace the Washington Clinic and hope zoning officials will not approve
the change in zoning.

Sincerely,
Betsey and Steven Kuhn

I am contemplating putting a home theater system into my house, which
would involve putting some new speaker up on my walls. I think I will
need some advice and also help with running of speaker wires and
mounting of speakers. Can any of you recommend someone who
specializes in such work, or at least is good at it? If that person
can also offer some advice on equipment, that would be a plus.

puts it, "I (i.e. his family) live outside Baltimore and plan on

floor to sleep on and a roof over my head from mid January to the end
of March." (He is hoping to find place near the Van Ness UDC,

On September 11, Alexios was driving to Dulles Airport to depart for
a fall term conservation project in the Greek and (former) Yugoslav

was cancelled, so Alexios decided to take a train up to New York and

Friends of Friendship Park is sponsoring our third annual winter story
time on Saturday mornings from now through March 16. This free drop-
in
program will run from 10:30-11:15 am and will take place in the Turtle
Park recreation center. The story time will be programmed by the
host-of-the-week, but will likely include books, songs, finger plays,
lap rides, dancing and snack time. Please join us and tell a friend!

VP Events
Friends of Friendship Park

HAVE YOU HAD THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM OR KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS
SITUATION?
Lately a lot of stealing has been going in the neighborhood (3700-3800
block of Albemarle St). Someone is going around stealing flags from
houses and stole large Christmas decorations. Eight flags were stolen
over time from one house. Someone also damaged a tree in the front
yard
of a house on the 3700 block.

There is suspicion that the thefts and damage is being done by a
resident (possibly several) of the 3600 block of Alton Street. This
same
individual has been associated with graffiti and other vandalism in
the
area.

If you have had a problem with theft or vandalism or know anything
about
these situations or this individual(s), please send your information
to
Captain Anthony Poteat
(Apoteat@...) and Lieutenant Mark Carter
(MPDCPSA202@...).
If you'd like to send me a copy, I'll make sure that it reached

COMMENTS REGARDING HOMELESS BEING DROPPED OFF

**** From: Anji Henderson <vual7@...>
Well I know that Montgomery County is only required to attempt pick up
homeless if there is a winter storm warning or below freezing
weather...
I would assume if they took the people out of there area that they
would
either drop them back or give them bus tokens to get back to the
"natural" area...

It has peeked my curiosity I shall e-mail a friend of mine that works
at
a homeless help center in the district..

I suggest you call the Community Council for the Homeless at
Friendship
Place, 364-1419. They do have contact with the DC, and the police
about
such things, and drive around picking up homeless people every
evening.

IF THE STREET LIGHTS GO OUT
Street lights were out for over a week in North Woodley Park. The
event
was chronicalled by Sally MacDonald, Sn3macd@... in

numbers to call when this happens. They are:
The City-DPW engineers, Mr. Jama Abdi (671-2710) and Mr. Mike Dorsey
(671-2829).
Mr. Charles Dickerson (872-5470) of Pepco Customer Operations.
For a single streetlight repair, call the DC nighttime number, 269-

That is Unity Construction, subcontractors who do a superb job!

During that time I understand the 2D police did an extra special job

patrolling the area, using their top lights to let residents know they
were in the area.

I went to Bagel City on the day the opened but haven't been back
since them (just haven't been back, not because of the restaurant).
I had coffee and some pastry. I thought the coffee was ok. But
maybe that was because I went after having a physical at my doctor's
office nearby and because I had to fast before the physical which was
around noon, I really needed coffee! I didn't try the bagels, and of
course, that's the most important thing. I needed bagels the day
after Thanksgiving, but they were closed so I had to drive to
Georgetown bagels on River Road.

Two years ago there were two bagel stores in Tenleytown, Chesapeake
Bagels and Manhatten Bagels. Now they're both gone. I miss being
about to buy a dozen good bagels at a store that I can walk to. Maybe
this weekend I'll walk to Bagel City and buy a dozen.

The bagels aren't bad, although I got a bit of a surprise when I
ordered an everything bagel -- they include lots of salt in the
toppings on their everything bagels. This is not what I've tasted in
other everything bagels.

True, they don't have PCs. Maybe they're aiming the service at AU Law
students.

I'd really like to see Bagel City improve and survive. I occasionally
work from home and would love to be able to sit with a good cup of
coffee, a bagel and a connected laptop.

Oh, lest I forget one of the big things going for them... they have a

it works and it's faster than my dialup connection at home.

So, is the fast, free internet access in a comfortable chair worth

The following are recommendations sent in by readers of COMMUNIT-E.
Because of the many requests I receive, I'm rerunning the community
recommendations that have appeared in COMMUNIT-E since Winter, 2000.
Some [**] were edited because of space limitations when they were
published in STREET SMART. Others [****] appeared after Winter 2000
and
may contain more detail. Feel free to send additional
recommendations.

ABOUT THESE RECOMMENDATIONS: Since different customers can have
different experiences, it would be a good idea to ask the individual
you
want to hire for several references. Then check those references. NONE
OF THESE RECOMMENDATIONS ARE GUARANTEED.

AS THE POLICE TELL US OFTEN: IT'S A BAD IDEA TO HIRE SOMEONE WHO COMES
TO YOUR DOOR, LOOKING FOR WORK. PROFESSIONAL TRADESMEN DON'T DO THAT
BUT
SCAMMERS AND THIEVES DO IT FREQUENTLY.

THE RECOMMENDATIONS:

ARCHITECT:
**** From: Bkravetz@...
In response to Lorie Leavy's request for an architect --- I would
highly
recommend Bill Feeney --- an AU Park resident (45th & Chesapeake
Streets) and fabulous guy! I have used him for two projects (one
really
major one) and he is great to work with. I have also recommended him
to
many other people in the area. He can be reached at 202-537-0397.

AUTO BODY WORK:
** From: Judie Guy, gpgazed@... -- I recommend Petrovitch at 14th
&
Florida.

BABYSITTER:
**** From: Jennifer Rose <jenrose1@...>
If you need a Babysitter Monday-Thursday for a evening out call my
former co-worker at 301-996-5854. She lives in Bethesda and would
like
to earn some extra cash. She is a former High School Counselor and is
wonderful with children. She charges $10.00 per hour. Available time
is
after 5:30pm.

BICYCLE REPAIR:
** Hudson Trail Outfitters at Brandywine and Wisconsin.

**** From: Sgtwear1 (Sgt. Mike Wear)
The Pro Shop on M. Street, near Key Bridge) has an excellent
mechanic --
Courtney. One of the best mechanics in the area, he does most of the
instructors repairs that we cannot do in MPD. Another shop -
Revolutions, just a few doors down, has excellent service, has always
been helpful. There are other shops in DC but these are in 2D.

BRICK & CONCRETE WORK:

301-499-0259.

** C. L. Williams at 301-397-4692 (beeper) or 301-856-4967. He does
painting,
cement, driveways, sidewalks, block & brick work, and hauling.

**** From: "Bachman, Janet" <jbachman@...>
Masonry Contractor: I've had a lot of brick work done over the years,
and always used Virnel Allen. He does great work, though he's not
cheap. He's also a grumpy old man, but the quality of his work makes
up
for it. Mr. Allen's phone is (202) 429-0324.

**** From: MGBPA@...
Thanks to the kind neighbour who provided the name of Virnel Allen. He
was great. Came when he said he would, did an excellent job, was
courteous, and even gave me a plant!
I highly recommend him. He is elderly and has help to do the heavy
work
but the actual bricklaying he does himself. His number is 202 429 0324
or 202 396 9556.

It's in Florida but Mr. Schauf comes to DC frequently and will come
just
for a particular job.

****From: Karen Schofield-Leca, wes@...
In reply to two recent requests for a painter/carpenter/subcontractor,
I'm pleased to make a strong recommendation for James Adams. Here at
the
Washington Ethical Society this past summer, he and his very able crew
did some rewiring, patching, repairs, and painting, plus basic
plumbing
and installed a sink. We are very pleased with the work and would
happily use his services again. You can reach him at cellular
301-455-5556, office 301-853-9571. Please tell him Karen sent you.

****From: Deborah C. Fort, fortdc@...
I'd like to recommend Marcos Orellana, carpenter, and handyman and his
company "The Home Doctor." 301-942-7768. Cell phone 240-604-4742. E-

twenty
years of local recommendations; he gives fair, firm estimates free;
his
work is done quickly and well.

**** From: sellis@... (Ellis, Susan)
Excellent home repair, carpentry, painting and plastering. Jaime
Barrera has worked for me for 10 years, doing everything from
building a
deck over my garage to plastering and painting my hall and upstairs
and
many smaller tasks. His phone number is: (home) 301/587-2410; cell
phone: 301/442-4138.

**** From: "Kathleen McLynn" <kdmclynn@...
We have a reliable house services name to share with our neighbors:
We have depended upon Mike Reidy of MULTIPLE SERVICES on 342-9356 in
close-by Glover Park for nearly 15 years to take care of both interior
and exterior work. He handles lawn work, repairs, painting and
remodeling jobs from start to finish for us and his rates are
reasonable. We highly recommend him.

CARPET CLEANER:
**** From: Abauer4600@...
I have a GREAT carpet cleaner. Banner Carpet 301-353-1217. It is
owned
and operated by Bruce Johnson who is a Captain at our local
firehouse.
He has cleaned many carpets for me in the last few years and has
always
revitalized them far beyond what any other cleaner has ever done in
the
past. (Does a great job on Orientals too.)

Jerry's catering. His number is 387-7531.

CHIMNEY CLEANING:
****From: Sara Cormeny, sara@...
I have used Winston's Chimney Service in the past. In the Dupont
Circle
area they regularly get the nod from homeowners in the know. I'd
recommend them without reservation. I know nothing of chimney business
but wouldn't be surprised if it takes a while to get on their schedule
at this time of year. Winston's Chimney Service, 4212R Howard Avenue,
Kensington, MD, 301-571-8546.

COMPUTER REPAIRS:
**** From: "Donald E. Graves" <degraves@...>
Hi, My computer-talented son Richard is very good at helping people
with
their computers, both setting up the hardware and software and
operating
problems. He makes house calls in the neighborhood and has been a
great
help to individuals in the Friendship Heights-Tenleytown area. He is
19
and graduated from Landon School. Currently he working part-time as a
web-page designer and is a part-time student at AU. He can be reached
at 202-362-7917, at degraves@... and rictus@....

****From: "David W. Schmucker" <david@...>
After reading numerous complaints about the Computer Clinic, an
alternative is to call my one person, home office company here in
AUP.
I've been teaching and developing software applications since 1980. I
don't fix hardware but feel free to call for a "sanity check." I can
answer most calls at no charge but will bill by the hour if more is
needed.

FINDING LOST PETS:
**** From: Darnot@...
When a pet is missing, contact D.C. Animal Control (run by Wash
Humane)
at 202/576-6664 and report it missing. Someone there will check the
log
they keep of "found pets" to see if anyone called in a found report on
the animal. Also try Sherlock Bones (http://sherlockbones.com;
1-800-942-6637) which is highly effective in reuniting pets with
owners.

FURNITURE REFINISHING:
** From: Dderman527@... (Connie Derman) -- Steve Yoder, S&S
Woodcrafts, Mechanicsville, MD (Southern Maryland, below Waldorf).
Steve is Amish, originally from Lancaster, PA. He does not pick up or
deliver (no car; only horse and buggy); he also has no telephone in
his
home; but a message can be left for him after 6 at 301-472-4962 - or a
note can be mailed to him at 26759 Thompsons Corner Road,
Mechanicsville, MD 20659. It takes about l-l/2 hours to drive to his
home. His charges are at least one-half of the local rates.

GARDENER:
**** From: Richard Bienvenue <ourhous@...>
The best & most reasonable gardener/ landscaper you will find is a
lady
from College Park: Janet "Walkin' Dove" Koles at 301-474-2461. She
is
intelligent, a real worker, and as honest as the day is long. I've
known her for 25 years, and when she's not working, she's volunteering
for the Boy Scouts, square dance teams, teaching Sunday school, etc.

**** From: Lberger728@... (Lisa Berger)
Great Gardener/Spring Cleaner: I've just had my spring garden cleaning
done by Evaristo Hernandez (trade name: Hernandez and Daughters;
reachable by cell phone at 202/421-3442) and recommend him highly. He
did an expert job of pruning, mulching and clean-up. Plus, his fee
was
reasonable and he was immediately available.

GUTTER CLEANING:
**** From: Brennan.Ross@...
As a result of a request you posted in Communit-E, I got some good
recommendations from neighbors about gutter cleaning services. I
thought I'd pass along their recommendations for a future issue of
Communit-E. Note that the first three are all for Winstons (but w/
different phone numbers).

**** From: jfkhoury@...
We use Winston's gutter cleaning service twice a year. They're not
cheap
($60 - 80) but they do a good job and fix the gutters as needed as
they
clean them. 301-986-1804

**** From: hier@...: We've been using Winston's Gutter
Service
for many years. I call them, they come within 2 weeks, we don't have
to
be home, then they bill us. They also do windows as a separate
service. The phone number is 301-986-1804.

**** From: csigler@...: I use Winston Gutters and they are
very
good. Their number is (301) 530-8595. I think they are backed up
right
now as this is their busy season, but it might be worth calling them.

**** From: A Brandywine St. neighbor: We have been using a guy named
Art Schultz who charges about $120 for the house and garage. We have
a
lot of trees on the property so we have it done at least twice a
year.
The best part is that I call him, and he comes and does it and sends
me
a bill-no waiting at home, etc. It sometimes takes a week or two for
him to get to the job but he always comes through and does a very neat
and thorough job. He will also trim shrubbery, etc. It's a very low
tech operation, however, just a message machine, the best bet is to
call
him at home in the evening. (703) 273-7252

****From: JPHIPPARD@...: We have our gutters cleaned by our lawn
service, which is Wray Bros. in Bethesda, 301-654-5845. They also do
a
great job on our lawn.

****From: Another neighbor: Troy at D & M Roofing at 301-948-0100. I
have found them to be very businesslike and I had tried others before
them. They work in essentially all weather. They will however want to
use an outside hose tap and probably would love it if you had a hose
out
there. But you can talk to them about that. They charge 35 bucks to
come and evaluate, and that is charged off against any work they do.

**** From: Another neighbor: We use "Joe the Roofer" at 301-229-
2673.
He is a retired roofer I think and has done our gutters for years. He
also does small roof repairs.

****From: A neighbor on Alton Place: We used a company called
Aerotech
(301) 937-6535. They were great.

HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING:
**** From: Esmfriend@... (Dawn Quattlebaum)
Friendship Terrace Retirement Community has used Noyes Air
Conditioning
-- (301) 670-6300 - - for over 13 years for our air conditioning and
heating needs. I have been very pleased with their service and
technicians.

**** From: ldc1@... (L. Carter)
I have a heating and air-conditioning recommendation. As a landlord,
I
have used a number of different furnace and air conditioning repair
companies, until settling on Beltsville Heating and Air Conditioning.
They have replaced a forced-air furnace, a central a/c, and have
repaired both gas and oil-fueled boilers for me, and have usually been
able to come within a day of calling, sometimes on the same day. I've
had no complaints about any of their work.

**** From: DBEDC@... (David Epstein)
I am happy with Robinson's Heating and Air-Conditioning. It's a
family
run business and small enough so that service is good. They can be
reached at 301-871-8902. Ask for Joset of Marie.

**** From: Bkravetz
I have used Bethesda Heating and Air Conditioning for about 20 years
and
they are VERY good, honest and reasonably priced (as these things
go!).

**** From: Mitnick123
I can recommend F.S. Campbell Co. for heating and Air Conditioning. I
have used them for years for routine maintenance. They are honest,
courteous, professional and knowledgeable. Their phone number is
301-869-1843.

LOCKSMITHS:
****From: Steven Gross <gross2@...>
We recently used Bob Lennox of Lennox Lock Service and were very
pleased. We first contacted him on the basis of an excellent rating in
the _Washington Checkbook_ and found that it was well-deserved. His
number is 703-527-2932.

****From: Anji Henderson <vual7@...>
Good locksmith : Liberty lock and security.... I have called on Rick
several times over the many years, simply because his best friend is
my
best mechanic for 15 years... I figured good people stick together...
And so, I was right.. You probably will not see Rick him self, he is
the
big guy... But I am sure the employees are up to his standards of
honesty and customer service...

MOVERS:
**** From: "Kathleen McLynn" <kdmclynn@...>

**** From: billrogers@... (Bill Rogers)
A great interior painting recommendation: no wallpaper and no
exterior. They said they were the best and they'd be the most
expensive. They are definitely the former and came in cheapest of 4
rather expensive bids. Superb quality: Washington Painting Company,
7106 Westmoreland Rd., Falls Church, VA 22042-2534 (703) 849-8200

**** From: SidBooth1@... (Sid Booth)
Mike Johnson, a local painter whose name I found in themail a year or
so
ago, has lived up to his strong recommendations. He made good
suggestions on how we should paint and was considerate of ways to
avoid
excessive costs. Mike can be reached at mhcj1@....

I have used Tim Gribbin as a painter for interior and exterior work.
His
phone number is 301-982-9863.

**** From: Lshneier@... (Lesley Shneier)
I used Edson of E.G. Painting (a one-man show, but he sometimes hires
an
additional helper), last summer and am very satisfied. He painted
inside
and outside, carefully, with good clean-up. His cell phone number is
240-876-2191. Feel free to tell him I gave you his name.

**** From: Jcapper@...
Painter recommended: I just used Sun Lin and his crew to paint the
inside of my house. They did great work - 4 rooms, 2 bathrooms and a
ceiling in just 2 days. I got two estimates and his was cheapest -
and
compared to what some of my friends paid, much cheaper for all that I
had done. Here's his number: 703-243-3096.

**** From: apg@... (Anthoula P. Gianniotis)
I highly recommend a licensed and bonded painting company called Gut

call the GT exterminating people at 338-KILL. They can set cages with

services. I highly recommend him. He is at: 301-674-6333.

**** From: Pavukmatt@... (Cheryl Browning)
A very good plumber we have used for several years is John E. Barry
Co.
They are in the yellow pages. Good work, fair to the consumer,
reasonable rates and usually right on time. We have an old house
which
has needed lots of plumbing work (such as replacing water pipes) over
the years.

**** From: BondMT@... (Bond, Michele T)
My family has relied on Thomas E. Clark, Inc. for plumbing and heating
for 40 or 50 years. It is a fine firm, with reliable, well-trained
staff. Recently the company gave us another reason to praise them:
The
hot water heater at my parents' house in Bethesda conked out. It is
quite old, so my dad figured it was time to replace it. He called
Thos.
Clark and asked them to send someone out with a new heater. When the
plumber examined the old heater, he said there was a "pin-point leak,"
easily repaired at a fraction of the cost of a new hot water heater.
Thomas Clark can be reached at 301-608-0550.

RECYCLING PLASTIC:

****From: "Jeff Spigel" <jspigel@...>
Roofer Recommendation: We just had Association Management install a
new
flat roof and deck at the rear of our house and were very pleased with
the quality of their job and efficiency of their work (Association
Management also had repaired portions of our slate roof and cleans our
gutters, both of which they have done ably and inexpensively). Call
301/384-5677 and ask for Richard (let him know the Spigel's
recommended
you).

****From: Mary McComb <maryemc@...>
I have another roofer recommendation -- just had mine done by
Tomlinson
Company whose office is in Bethesda, but Tracy Tomlinson is our

(decided I couldn't afford slate, but nice to know they can do it).
Their phone number is 301-913-9111.

SECURITY SERVICE:
**** From: "Groner, Laurence, , SAF/GCN" <GronerL@...>
For Tom Hier, looking for a security system company: I can recommend
Satellite Industries, Inc. (located in Maryland). Their installation
representative knew what he was talking about,
thoroughly explained the options available, and seemed to have good
common sense about what was really necessary and what was not. Their
prices were very competitive.

great.

DEALING WITH PROBLEM AU STUDENT RENTAL HOUSES:
From: kenanddavida@... (Kenneth Giles & Davida Perry)
The following is their suggestions with my edited changes -- KS

If you are disturbed by noise/music/car horns at all hours of the
night
from these rental houses, here are several ways you can respond. It is
especially important to contact Mr. Taylor, Lt. Carter and an ANC
rep.
Immediately report any problem (noise, drunk behavior, trespassing,
etc.) to:
--- The owner (landlord) of the house.
--- The police at 911; the dispatcher will send a patrol car.
--- The AU "public safety officer" at 885-2527. That office is open
24/7.

During working hours report problems to:
--- Dan Kelley, AU Coordinator of Greek Life, at 885-3390. The house
is
in effect a fraternity house and AU wants us to notify Mr. Kelley of
all
problems.
--- Faith Leonard, AU Dean of Students, at 885-3300. AU wants us to
notify her also.
--- David Taylor, executive assistant to AU's President (whose name is
Mr. Ladner), at 885- 2121 (taylor@...). Mr. Taylor is AU's
liaison with the neighborhood; it is his job to placate us so we don't
cause bad publicity for his boss.
--- Our police station at 282-0070 or 727-1010. A better idea is to
call 311 and request that an officer come to your home to discuss a
neighborhood problem. Or call the Administrative office at 282-0065
or
Supervisor's office at 282-0038.

These officers handle neighborhood problems:
o District Commander Peter Newsham at 282-0042 (mpdc2dcmdr@...)
o the "police service area" leader for PSA 202, Lt. Mark Carter, at
282-0039 or 886-5892 (mpdcpsa202@...)
o PSA 202 Assistant Leader Sgt. Rick Davis at 282-0050

ANC reps Chris McNamara at 237-9096 (mcnamrus@...) and Leslie
Quynn
(lquynn@...).

Our City Council rep Kathleen Patterson at 724-8062.
(kpatterson@...).

CALLING THE POLICE IN ORDER TO HAVE AN OFFICER SENT TO YOUR HOUSE/
BUSINESS

When calling the police for service ALWAYS call 911 (emergency) or 311
(nonemergency). The officers are dispatched via a central call
center,
not the local police district. Don't bother to call 2D for the initial
call; they'll just refer you to 911 or 311.

If an office arrives but you are unhappy about how he or she is
handling
the matter, here are some ways to reach a police supervisor. I don't
know which will work best, but they all lead to the same place.

1.) Call Police Communications (311) and say that you need to speak
to
the "Second District Watch Commander" or other 2D official about a
police officer who just came to your house. If the Communications
call
taker is not responsive, ask to speak to a communications supervisor
and
make the same request. If you still have difficulty, the
Communications
Supervisor's number is 671-2872.

2.) Another approach is to call the 2D desk at 282-0070 and make the
same request. They may give you an additional number to call. There is
always a "Watch Commander" on duty at each District.

3.) If these don't work, call, in this order: 282-0038 (for PSA
sergeant or lieutenant) or
282-0032 (captains), 282-0042 (2D commander). What you want to do is
talk to a sergeant (or higher rank if the sergeant can't be reached)
to
resolve your problem with the responding officer.

In the end the police supervisor may agree with the officer and
disagree
with you, but at least you have had the opportunity to run the problem
past a more senior official. The important thing to remember is that
if you are uncomfortable with the way that an officer has handled a
situation, the best time to deal with that concern is right then, when
the officer is still on the street and easily available to his or her
supervisors.

It is important to get an officer's name before he leaves your home or
business. This is true even if everything goes well. You may need to
reach him later. You don't need badge numbers since all radio runs
are
recorded, including the officer's communications with the dispatcher.
The department keeps track of where its officers are sent. But you
need
to tell them the date, time, and officer's name to assist them to
locate
the run on their computer and to make sure you are talking about the
right person.

WHAT'S GOING ON HERE?
Can anyone shed light on the following? A resident told me that he
saw
a van with city government markings and some homeless agency title
[not
sure what it was] drop off two homeless men at Tenley Circle this
past
Saturday morning. They were left off on the street, not in front of
any
building. On Sunday night I saw 7 (count them, 7) men sleeping outside
the Tenley Metro. That was about 9:30 pm.

COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD

**** From: "kayandpaul" <kayandpaul@...> (Kay McClenon)
I think your community recommendation list is a great resource. I have
replied to a couple of queries in communit-e, directly to the
questioners e-mail address, so those do not appear on your list. I
think a word to your readers might suggest that they also reply to you
as well as to
the asker.

I do want to recommend someone who does small moving and hauling jobs,
whose name I forwarded to a subscriber to communit-e. Actually, he
can
do handyman jobs as well, or if he can't, he'll recommend a friend who
is reliable. This man is: Rodney Young, 202-291-5152. He can put up
curtain rods, etc., and minor carpentry; he recommended a painter and
a
plumber.

**** Rubacats@... (Kelly Rubenstein)
I have an antique clock that needs to be restored and repaired. It
will
probably be a fairly complex job. I'd love a recommendation for
someone
who does this sort of work.

**** From: "Barbara R. Bergmann" <bbergman@...>
Is there any young person who would contract to shovel snow for us for
falls over 1 inch? Pay would presumably be by the inch or by time.

**** From: MikeEttner@...
My immediate need, here in Glover Park, is for someone to haul away
from
my garage some
accumulated junk (e.g., lotsa lumber pieces from remodeling). Didn't
see anyone on the list to fit that bill ?

**** From: "Michael & Linda Wiessler-Hughes"
<michaelinda88@...>
We are installing a railing on a balcony, and are looking for a
recommendation for someone who does cast-aluminum or cast-iron work.

**** From: "Anne Chase" <chase-healy@...>
If people are looking for a weekend babysitter, I can recommend my
daughter, Noel Healy. She is 17, a junior in high school, and polite
and
reliable. She is not in the same category as the high school
counselor,
but your children will be safe with her. You can reach her at
202-966-4252.

THIS IS DEDICATED TO MY FELLOW ALUMS IN THE 'HOOD -- KS
From: edw3qc@... (Ed McCauley)

After former Florida State head football coach Bobby Bowden dies and
enters the pearly gates, God takes him on a tour. He shows Bobby a
little two-bedroom house with a faded F.S.U. banner hanging from the
front porch. "This is your house, coach. Most people don't get their
own house up here", God says.

Bobby looks at the house, then turns around and looks at the one
setting
on top of the hill. It's a huge mansion with marble columns and little
patios under all of the windows. Penn State flags line both sides of
the
side walk and a huge blue and white Penn State banner hangs between
the
marble columns.

"Thanks for the house, God. But, let me ask you a question. I get this
little two bedroom house with a faded F.S.U. banner and Paterno gets a
mansion with new Nittany Lion banners and flags flying all over the
place. Why is that?"

God looks at him seriously for a moment and says, "Paterno's not dead.
That's my house.

Welcome to the Tenleytown list serve on Yahoo Groups. I have created
this group as a community service. I do not intend to set many
ground rules to start off, so as long as folks post items of interest
to the Tenleytown area everything should be fine. I do however
reserve the right to moderate at any time.
