From Bill White

Wouldn't it be great if our next U.S. Senator represented all Texans and was a strong, effective voice for our state's future? If we had statewide leadership more interested in succeeding in reviving our economy than in seceding from the union?!

I am working hard to represent you as Texas' next U.S. Senator. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson has said that she intends to resign her Senate seat in circumstances creating a special election. Since the beginning of the year, when I announced that I would seek to represent our state in the U.S. Senate, many thousands of Texans from across the state have joined our team. I need your support.

As Houston's Mayor, I have cut crime rates and helped our region lead the nation in job growth, adding more jobs than sixteen states combined. We've organized programs to bring dropouts back to school and to improve air quality by fighting polluters. These efforts have led to re-election margins averaging over 88%.

Texans deserve better than the politics of sound bites. We need strong leaders who will offer real solutions. Don't you think our state needs a voice in Washington who can have influence with the nation's new leadership?

In Tarrant County we've made progress with the election of mainstream candidates including State Senator Wendy Davis and Representative Chris Turner. Please help us continue that progress.

I share your values and want to build a better future for our children and grandchildren. As Deputy Secretary of Energy in the Clinton Administration, I successfully advocated policies to promote energy efficiency and renewables and to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

My parents were both teachers, and my father is a disabled veteran who was able to go from the farm to college because of the G.I. Bill. I will fight for more educational opportunities for Texans and stand up for our veterans.

Help me organize from the grassroots up. Grassroots, neighbor-to-neighbor organization is the most important force in our nation's political history. Forty years ago I helped organize voter registration drives among minority voters in San Antonio and have continued to fight for social justice ever since. As chair of the Democratic Party of Texas, I helped organize one of the most successful state conventions ever in Fort Worth in 1996. I hope you can help me spread the word in Tarrant County and across the state.

Texas 26th Congressional District

Neil is a very good candidate for the 26th Congressional District. I found him to be one of the most helpful County Chairs if not the most helpful. Neil put great effort and organization into bringing Denton County's Democratic Party back from a situation where there were no elected Democrats to a very competitive Democratic Party. Neil is extremely intelligent and would be a real plus as a Metroplex Congressman.

I would heartily endorse him.

Neil Durrance, Denton County Democratic Chair, has submitted his paperwork to the Federal Election Commission to become a candidate for the Democratic Nomination in the Texas 26th Congressional District.

At a later date I will issue a formal statement of my endorsement of Neil.

Specter says he's switching from GOP to Dems

By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent David Espo, Ap Special Correspondent
6 mins ago

WASHINGTON – Veteran Republican Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania disclosed plans Tuesday to switch parties, a move intended to boost his chances of winning re-election next year that also will push Democrats within one seat of a 60-vote filibuster-resistant majority.

"I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans," Specter said in a statement posted on a Web site devoted to Pennsylvania politics and confirmed by his office. Several Senate officials said a formal announcement was expected later in the day or Wednesday.

President Barack Obama called Specter almost immediately after he was informed of the decision to say the Democratic Party was "thrilled to have you," according to a White House official. Spurned Republicans said his defection was motivated by ambition, not principle.

Specter, 79 and in his fifth term, is one of a handful of Republican moderates remaining in Congress in a party now dominated by conservatives. Several officials said secret talks that preceded his decision reached into the White House, involving both Obama and Vice President Joseph Biden, a longtime colleague in the Senate. Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell as well as Democratic leaders in Congress also were involved, added the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose details.

With Specter, Democrats would have 59 Senate seats. Democrat Al Franken is ahead in a marathon recount in Minnesota, and if he ultimately wins his race against Republican Norm Coleman, he would become the party's 60th vote. That is the number needed to overcome a filibuster.

Specter faced an extraordinarily difficult re-election challenge in his home state in 2010, having first to confront a challenge from his right in the Republican primary before pivoting to a general election campaign against a Democrat in a state that has trended increasingly Democratic in recent elections. Former Rep. Pat Toomey, whom Specter defeated in a close primary race in 2004, is expected to run again.

Specter has publicly acknowledged in recent months that in order to win a sixth term, he would need the support of thousands of Pennsylvania Republicans who sided with Obama in last fall's presidential election.

"I am unwilling to have my twenty-nine year Senate record judged by the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate," he said in the statement.

Asked by a reporter what he had to say to his constituents, Specter replied with a smile, "I don't have to say anything to them. They said it to me."

Specter has long been an independent Republican, and he proved it most recently when he became one of only three members of the GOP in Congress to vote for Obama's economic stimulus legislation. Then, he proved it once more, pivoting not long afterwards to say he did not support legislation making it easier to form unions, a bill that is organized labor's top priority in the current Congress.

In Pennsylvania, the chairman of the state Republican Party, Rob Gleason, said that Specter should offer a refund to Republicans who have helped fatten his war chest, which totaled $5.8 million at the end of 2008. "He should give them the option," Gleason said.

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele said in a statement: "Some in the Republican Party are happy about this. I am not. Let's be honest: Senator Specter didn't leave the GOP based on principles of any kind. He left to further his personal political interests because he knew that he was going to lose a Republican primary due to his left-wing voting record. Republicans look forward to beating Sen. Specter in 2010, assuming the Democrats don't do it first."

Specter has long been one of the most durable politicians of either party in Pennsylvania. In recent years, he has battled Hodgkin's disease, a cancer of the lymphatic system, but maintains a busy schedule that includes daily games of squash.

As one of the most senior Republicans in the Senate, Specter held powerful positions on the Judiciary and Appropriations committees. It was not clear how Democrats would calculate his seniority in assigning committee perches.

As recently as late winter, he was asked by a reporter why he had not taken Democrats up on past offers to switch parties.

"Because I am a Republican," he said at the time.

"I welcome Sen. Specter and his moderate voice to our diverse caucus," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said in a statement.

A senior White House official, speaking on the condition of anonymity because no announcement has yet been made, said at 10:25 a.m. EDT Tuesday President Barack Obama was handed a note while in the Oval Office during his daily economic briefing. The note said: "Specter is announcing he is changing parties." At 10:32, Obama reached Specter by phone and told him "you have my full support" and that the Democratic Party is "thrilled to have you."

District 24

Kenny Marchant (R)

Not only did Kenny Marchant sit on the committee that redistricted Texas, but his own district just happened to be redrawn in such a way that only death or retirement will remove him from office. We suggest the latter.

Dear Thomas,

Due to an overwhelming response, the Noriega for U.S. Senate Rally with special guest President Bill Clinton is over capacity!

Ticket distribution at the door will be limited, based on venue capacity and given on a first come first served basis.

Seating preference and venue access will be given to those who have already picked up tickets or have given their information to "will-call." There will be also be an overflow space with a full audio feed.

Thank you for your support!

McCain's Radical Agenda on Health-care

OH, Did You Really Need Health-care?

By BOB HERBERT

Talk about a shock to the system. Has anyone bothered to notice the radical changes that John McCain and Sarah Palin are planning for the nation's health insurance system? These are changes that will set in motion nothing less than the dismantling of the employer-based coverage that protects most American families.

A study coming out Tuesday from scholars at Columbia, Harvard, Purdue and Michigan projects that 20 million Americans who have employment-based health insurance would lose it under the McCain plan.

There is nothing secret about Senator McCain's far-reaching proposals, but they haven't gotten much attention because the chatter in this campaign has mostly been about nonsense — lipstick, celebrities and "Drill, baby, drill!"

For starters, the McCain health plan would treat employer-paid health benefits as income that employees would have to pay taxes on. "

It means your employer is going to have to make an estimate on how much the employer is paying for health insurance on your behalf, and you are going to have to pay taxes on that money," said Sherry Glied, an economist who chairs the Department of Health Policy and Management at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health.

Ms. Glied is one of the four scholars who have just completed an independent joint study of the plan. Their findings are being published on the Web site of the policy journal, Health Affairs.

According to the study: "The McCain plan will force millions of Americans into the weakest segment of the private insurance system — the nongroup market — where cost-sharing is high, covered services are limited and people will lose access to benefits they have now."

The net effect of the plan, the study said, "almost certainly will be to increase family costs for medical care."

Under the McCain plan (now the McCain-Palin plan) employees who continue to receive employer-paid health benefits would look at their pay stubs each week or each month and find that additional money had been withheld to cover the taxes on the value of their benefits.

While there might be less money in the paycheck, that would not be anything to worry about, according to Senator McCain. That's because the government would be offering all taxpayers a refundable tax credit — $2,500 for a single worker and $5,000 per family — to be used "to help pay for your health care."

You may think this is a good move or a bad one — but it's a monumental change in the way health coverage would be provided to scores of millions of Americans. Why not more attention?

The whole idea of the McCain plan is to get families out of employer-paid health coverage and into the health insurance marketplace, where naked competition is supposed to take care of all ills. (We're seeing in the Bear Stearns, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch fiascos just how well the unfettered marketplace has been working.)

Taxing employer-paid health benefits is the first step in this transition, the equivalent of injecting poison into the system. It's the beginning of the end.

When younger, healthier workers start seeing additional taxes taken out of their paychecks, some (perhaps many) will opt out of the employer-based plans — either to buy cheaper insurance on their own or to go without coverage.

That will leave employers with a pool of older, less healthy workers to cover. That coverage will necessarily be more expensive, which will encourage more and more employers to give up on the idea of providing coverage at all.

The upshot is that many more Americans — millions more — will find themselves on their own in the bewildering and often treacherous health insurance marketplace. As Senator McCain has said: "I believe the key to real reform is to restore control over our health care system to the patients themselves."

Yet another radical element of McCain's plan is his proposal to undermine state health insurance regulations by allowing consumers to buy insurance from sellers anywhere in the country. So a requirement in one state that insurers cover, for example, vaccinations, or annual physicals, or breast examinations, would essentially be meaningless.

In a refrain we've heard many times in recent years, Mr. McCain said he is committed to ridding the market of these "needless and costly" insurance regulations.

This entire McCain health insurance transformation is right out of the right-wing Republicans' ideological playbook: fewer regulations; let the market decide; and send unsophisticated consumers into the crucible alone.

You would think that with some of the most venerable houses on Wall Street crumbling like sand castles right before our eyes, we'd be a little wary about spreading this toxic formula even further into the health care system.

But we're not even paying much attention.

Congressman Kenny Marchant, I am delighted that you are for the elimination of wasteful spending. Then we won't be wasting any more billions in Iraq. That alone makes me glad. Since we are on track to spend three trillion dollars on that war. Oh, but you always voted for that war.

I also am glad that we won't be tripling the national debt like we have under the Republicans. As you may remember, Ronald Reagan stated in 1980 that the national debt was at three trillion dollars and that was enough to reach from the Earth to the moon. Republicans said they would do something about that and they have, they tripled it with almost 70% of the now nine trillion dollars occurring under three Republican Presidents; Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush. Oh, but you voted for all these increases the last four years that you were in Congress.

Since you profess to be for hard working American workers, then I'm glad you won't be giving away tax breaks to foreign addressed American corporations and assisting the relocation of American jobs to Asia. Under your Republican colleges, you helped many American jobs go overseas. I am glad you will no longer help drive jobs away from America.

I am also glad that you are going to help invest in alternative fuel to help stop the dependence on foreign oil that is strangling American commerce. Since you are for helping the American hard working families that have seen the price of gasoline rise to all time levels. I am glad you will be changing your voting for energy companies and enabling them to make record profits.

I am glad you will help American families stay in their homes. Oh, but you voted to not regulate the mortgage industry and allowed them to continue predatory lending practices that have put the whole American economy at risk.

I am glad that you want to help EVERY American taxpayer, including low- and middle-income families, working parents with children, and seniors. Then you will help create more student loan programs to educate American college students and prevent them from being saddled with a mountain of debt while having grant money cut back. You can develop job creation plan and give tax breaks to American companies that create new jobs. Oh, but you voted against student financial aid.

I am glad you are for helping seniors. That must mean you will no longer vote to lower Medicare reimbursement for doctors that will mean fewer doctors will see seniors. It is difficult to find a doctor that takes Medicare now, but then you voted to lower doctor's pay even further. I am glad you will change those votes.

So then, I guess you really must feel awful about all your votes against American families, but you really do want us to know you feel our pain.

By the way, I am in favor of cutting middle-class taxes and creating the tax breaks that will stimulate American economic growth. You may remember, America lost 80,000 jobs last month, so you need to get going on all your proclamations; you are way behind in them already.

Sincerely,

L

Tom Love

Democratic Candidate for US Congress District 24

Today's Tax Filing Deadline Gives Insight into the Big Government Democratic Spending.

April 15, "TAX DAY", is maybe the most dreaded day of the year for most Americans. Today, hardworking American's like yourself are expected to hand over a significant portion of your income to the not-so-wise spenders who control the Democratically held House of Representatives and the Senate. Sending your income to the IRS in Washington , DC is like watching the Washington Redskins beat the Dallas Cowboys - we hate it.

TAXES ARE TOO HIGH - NOT TOO LOW.

If Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) have there way TODAY it will be an even more painful "TAX DAY" very soon for every single taxpayer. The Democratic Leadership insists on implementing the largest tax increase in American history and they must be stopped.

This massive tax increase, which will take more money out of the pockets of every single American taxpayer, is the single greatest threat to our economy, particularly at a time when families and small businesses are already struggling with soaring gas prices and spikes in other costs of living.  But according to the Associated Press, Senator Reid thinks stopping the largest tax hike in American history amounts to little more than helping "multimillionaires and special interests, not average working Americans." Actually, stopping the Democrats' massive tax hike will help EVERY American taxpayer, including low- and middle-income families, working parents with children, and seniors.

Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke has repeatedly warned Congress not to raise taxes.  Do Senator Reid and other Democrats really plan to ignore his advice by raising them on every single American taxpayer?

Today, House Republicans will force a vote to stop the Democrat-authored largest tax increase in American history during consideration of the rule for H.R. 5719, a tax bill scheduled for consideration on the House floor.  Republicans will use a proposal from Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI) - the Tax Increase Prevention Act (H.R. 2734) - which would stop the $683 billion tax increase passed by House Democrats in March as part of their FY 2009 budget proposal.  The vote will answer some key questions, including the following:

- Do House Democrats support increasing personal income tax rates on middle-class families?

- Do House Democrats support slashing the child tax credit in half?

- Do House Democrats support reinstating the marriage penalty?

- Do House Democrats support bringing back the death tax?

- Do House Democrats support hiking taxes on dividends and investment earnings?

- Do House Democrats support raising taxes on seniors and their retirement savings?

If their record is any indication, the answer is yes.  House Democrats have consistently voted to increase taxes on middle class families and used tax hikes as the silver bullet to every potential problem.

Today's vote will present House Democrats with a clear choice.  They can either side with Speaker Pelosi and other Democratic leaders by supporting the largest tax increase in history or they can side with their overtaxed constituents, who are tired of Washington confiscating their hard-earned money and wasting it.  The last thing our constituents need from Washington politicians is another tax hike to finance more wasteful government spending.

I will continue my fight today against higher taxes and wasteful spending.

                                                                  Sincerely,

                                                                  M

                                                                  Kenny Marchant

                                                                  Member of Congress

Texas Blue On The Record: Tom Love

Grace Stevens's picture

For this episode of On The Record, we speak with Tom Love, the Democratic candidate for U.S. House District 24 for the 2008 election.

What prompted you to run for public office?

I am an University of Texas alumni, a working man, a concerned husband, a father and a grandfather who has seen the "American Dream" slowly turning into the "American Nightmare."

We have become a nation that has far too long ignored its working peoples' needs and rewarded powerful special interests. Texans pay their taxes and are penalized, while multimillionaires get special tax breaks. We cannot become a nation that builds bridges to nowhere, yet constructs no pathway to our children's future.

My maternal grandmother told me about voting,"I will never forfeit a right that I worked so hard to obtain. Never allow democracy to vanish because it is not convenient to vote, or you will never get it back." My paternal grandfather was a Lamar County Judge and also instilled an interest in politics that my father passed on to me.

We need the commitment and backbone of the American people to solve this latest fiscal disaster of predatory lending.

What would you say are the primary issues concerning your area?

I am calling for the creation of a "Fair Deal" for the working men and women of Texas who pay their taxes in an era of multimillionaires getting unfair tax breaks, the outsourcing of American jobs to foreign countries and over $3 per gallon gasoline.

The Texas Legislative and Congressional districts were redrawn in a non-census year to represent partisan, ideological concerns, and Texans no longer had control over local issues.

Americans need to address the healthcare needs that have allowed 47 million Americans to go without healthcare. Policies that allow chronic illnesses and unsafe nurse-to-patient ratios weaken our hospitals ability to treat patients without private insurance intervention. Texans need to be able to build a pathway for their children's futures, not build bridges to nowhere as the Republicans have done. Teachers must receive better pay and be allowed to teach.

I pledge that I will work between the aisles and in whatever venue necessary to represent my district and its needs and concerns.

What are your qualifications for the position for which you are running?

I have real experience dealing with the real problems of Texans. As a small business owner, a financial services worker with the Texas Department of Human Services and a financial services supervisor, I have experienced firsthand the difficulties Texans have to pay their bills, maintain their homes, feed and clothe their children and teach American family values to the next generation.

I believe I can send a message that the working people of this state are tired of having partisan ideological differences and a culture of corruption that keeps Republicans, Democrats, Liberals, Moderates, and Conservatives from solving issues fairly.

I am a social progressive that believes in sound fiscal values.

How do politics affect your family?

We, like most other Texas families, have to work to provide the economic livelihood necessary to pay mortgages, car notes, credit cards to maintain credit worthiness, and care for our families.

We are spending, by one study, $720 million dollars a day for a war in Iraq that we have already "won." We continue to occupy Iraq without an exit strategy, while our troops and families suffer with repeated call-ups, extensions, redeployment, and post traumatic stress disorder without adequate medical care and try to survive in the face of predatory lenders and extreme economic hardship.

All these problems are causing crushing debt. It is time we solved these problems. We can. We will.

What is your biggest hope for Texas?

I hope and believe that we can rise above the ideological quagmire that has engulfed us and bring a new and greater shinning path to us and our posterity. We need not be in fear or dislike government, for we are the government.

And by the people, for the people, and with the American public, we will triumph over adversity. The unique experiment our forefathers created we must now protect, serve, and defend. With God's help, we'll solve the issues of our time and create a new direction for future generations.

I ask for your help in this long, difficult journey. I am under no illusion that I can take this path alone. With my wife of thirty two years, Marilyn, I take this journey. We need Americans to register to vote and vote for America. Vote to end the politics of division, lies and deceit. Vote to end the politics of disrespect and humiliation.

If you give us your vote, we will pledge to serve, protect, and defend our great land. And if you give us your vote, my heart will be your heart, my hand will be your hand, our voice will be your voice, and your dream will be our reality.

I speak today as a working man who loves his country and loves his God, who asks for your vote and requests your help.

THIS IS NOT THE 'DON'T BUY' GAS FOR ONE DAY, BUT IT WILL SHOW YOU HOW WE CAN
GET GAS BACK DOWN TO $1.30 PER GALLON.

This was sent by a retired Coca Cola executive. It came from one of his
engineer buddies who retired from Halliburton. If you are tired of the gas
prices going up AND they will continue to rise this summer, take time to
read this please.

Phillip Hollsworth offered this good idea. This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than
the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last
April or May! It's worth your consideration. Join the resistance!!!!

I hear we are going to hit close to $ 4.00 a gallon by next summer, and it
might go higher!! Want gasoline prices to come down?

We need to take some intelligent, united action. The oil companies just
laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves
by refusing to buy gas.

It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT,
whoever thought of this idea has come up with a plan that can really work.
Please read on and join with us!

By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $2.00 is super
cheap. Me too! It is currently $3.19 for regular unleaded in my town.

Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think
that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50 - $1.75, we need to take
aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace..not
sellers.

With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take
action.

The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit
someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And, we can do that
WITHOUT hurting ourselves.

How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas.

But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a
PRICE WAR.

Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from
the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. And under no
circumstances buy from CITCO. If they are not selling any gas, they will be
inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other
companies will have to follow suit.

But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and
Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do! Now, don't wimp out on me at
this point...keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach
millions of people!!

I am sending this note to 30 people. If each of us send it to at least ten
more (30 x 10 = 300) ... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x10
= 3,000)...and so on, by t he time the message reaches the sixth group of
people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers. If those three
million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million
people will have been contacted!

If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION
PEOPLE!!!

Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people That's all!

(If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do
is send this to 10 people.... Well, let's face it, you just aren't a
mathematician. But I am . so trust me on this one.

How long would all that take? If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten
more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could
conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days !!!

I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting
together we can make a diff erence.

If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. I suggest that we
not buy from EXXON/MOBIL UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $2.00 RANGE
AND KEEP THEM DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK

Keep it going

Now we all love a good sermon.  But after the service, we have to take that inspiration and actually go out and do something!  That's what Hillary's been doing for over 35 years.  She's been a recipe for change for children's education, children's healthcare, women's rights at home and abroad, disability benefits for first responders, and bipartisan support for full service compensation to our men and women who have bravely served.  She can clearly see an injustice.  She knows how to empower those who are working hard but who just haven't caught the right break (or who have caught all of the wrong ones).

I sincerely hope that you, along with your family and your friends, will join Hillary on February 29 at 7:30 p.m. at 6920 Turtle Creek  Boulevard.  While you should RSVP to https://contribute.hillaryclinton.com/events/dallas0229.html, please reply to this email or call me to find out what else you can to do to help Hillary before the March 4 Texas Primary.  If you're interested in volunteering  or helping with other activities for the Hillary Clinton for President Campaign, there will be two organizational meetings this Saturday, February 16th, at 10:00 a.m.  and 2:00 p.m., respectively, at 1409 S. Lamar in the Gallery Room (Southside on Lamar).  For information about volunteering, please contact Barbara Rosenberg at berosenberg@... or Kathy Nealy at kathy_nealy@....

Oh, the event invitation is attached, assuming you've passed the test.
