Hello Everyone,

I am a new hunter and I have was wondering:

Generally speaking, is taxidermy expensive?

What kinds of price ranges should I expect?

For my first successful hunt, I would like to keep the deer hide.
Any suggestions on how to preserve the hide before going to the
taxidermist? Should I rinse of the hide or do I just bag it?

Any suggestion/recommendation would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

lordpumba4k

Some taxidermistics know that dermestid beetles and their larvae can
efficiently strip a carcass clean of flesh in a relatively short
period of time. They can also reach hard to access recesses.

We have some surplus dermestids and are offering starter cultures of
approximately four dozen individuals in various parts of their
lifecycle for $20 plus $5 shipping. It'll take little time for these
to become a large, 'hot' colony.

Payment via Paypal or inquiries to gphx@...

Best of luck with your taxidermy projects.

Hello, I am a new member. I have done some rabbit skin and deer skin
tanning. I'll be doing more as I can get more skins. I also do some
leather work, I'm a beginner there. I live in a pretty populated
area and I don't have any friends who are hunters, so I am posting
here for some help.

My husband has always wanted a bear and/or wolf claw and tooth
necklace. I want to make him one for Christmas. I thought this would
be easy, go on ebay, buy the claws and teeth and then get down to
making the necklace. Well, it isn't easy. I don't want to pay a lot
of money for resin reproductions, and it seems that the real ones
for sale won't ship to Canada.

Does anyone have claws or teeth rattling around that they'd be
willing to part with, for a reasonable cost? I would also be
interested in small pieces of bear or wolf hide/fur to line the
gift/storage box.

Next question, where should I get the resin that is used to fill the
claws? I am not familiar with that material at all.

Final question, what is the best way to polish the claws? I don't
want to risk damaging them, I thought perhaps fine steel wool and
some beeswax? Is that what others have used?

Thanks so much.
Stacey

I have the claws, now how do I clean and prep them for jewellery? I
have a dremel, so I can drill them, do I use high speed or closer to
normal rpm for drilling these? I also have a tooth, can I drill it
with normal bits or do I need diamond tip? How do I best polish the
claws? I need to know what to soak/boil them in to get rid of flesh
inside, and how to work with them after, how long to dry etc.

Thanks All!

Wanted: Historic Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Northern Montana
Sage-Grouse Samples

I am a Ph.D. student at the University of Alberta studying the genetic
structure of Canadian and northern Montana Sage-Grouse. Part of my
project involves comparing the genetic diversity of present and
historic samples. The purpose of this is to determine potential
causes for the decline seen in Canadian Sage-Grouse and to determine
whether Canadian and northern Montana birds form a single population.

I am looking for people with birds killed prior to 1996 in Alberta,
Saskatchewan, British Columbia, or northern Montana (Blaine, Phillips,
and Valley counties). For birds to be used in this study, I need to
know the approximate time period that the bird was killed (e.g.
decade) and approximate location. Samples can be taken from mounted
birds, skins, or collected feathers.

If you are interested in contributing to this research and have birds
that fit these criteria, please contact me by email or mail for a
sample collection kit and instructions. Thank you.
