[Synoptic-L] Prehistory of the Farrer Hypothesis   Message List
Reply Message #6280 of 10247 |

Although the Farrer Hypothesis got its impetus from Farrer
in 1955, its basic framework may have been anticipated by a
number of critics. For example, A. Edersheim, "On a New
Theory of the Origin and Composition of the Synoptic
Gospels Proposed by G. Wetzel" in STUDIA BIBLICA: Essays
in Biblical Archaeology and Criticism and Kindred Subjects
(Oxford: Clarendon, 1885) 1:75-88, wrote:

"Others begin with St. Mark. Thus: St. Mark, St. Matthew,
St. Luke. So Storr, Thiersch, Reuss, Meyer, Tholuck,
Tobler, Plitt, Weiss." (Edersheim 1885: 78)

So it looks like that as many eight critics prior to the
20th century have argued for the order Mark-Matt-Luke.
Is anyone familiar enough with their writings to confirm
whether or not they anticipated Farrer?
