"Then said he (Jesus) unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him [sell his garment], and buy one."

The verse above very plainly states that if one is lacking a weapon for his personal protection, he or she should sell an article of clothing in order to secure one. This is indicative of the priority the creator puts on ensuring that we are adequately protected against threats to our lives as we go about our daily existence. If there is any doubt in the mind of the reader this is a reference to a physical object, I would call your attention to verse 38; which places it in context, showing by the wording that it most certainly meant a literal sword-

"And they (apostles) said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough."
