The prophet Isaiah predicted, “They will beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.”

In 1961 the United States and the Soviet Union announced a plan to achieve that goal. The Soviet Union introduced the idea at the United Nations General Assembly in 1959. and when John F. Kennedy was elected president he decided to pursue that goal.On September 20, 1961 John J. McCloy of the United States and Valerian Zorin representing the Soviet Union signed the Joint Statement of Agreed Principles for Disarmament Negotiations with the goal, “that disarmament is general and complete and war is no longer an instrument for settling international problems.”
The McCloy-Zorin was unanimously adopted by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 20, 1961. Isaiah’s biblical prophesy was converted into an international objective.
