Fort Myers, FL, June. 1, 2009 — The Calusa Blueway Paddling Trail is hosting its second annual p hoto contest, “Shooting the Blueway.”  If you have an eye for photography, this is the perfect opportunity to capture the beauty of the waterways.  Take a shot from your canoe or kayak on the Great Calusa Blueway in Lee County, and you could win prizes and possibly publication of your winning picture.

The contest is divided into two different categories – one for pictures of paddlers on the trail and one for nature photography.  Each category will have a winner plus two runners-up.  Winners will receive an enlarged, matted and framed photo of their work. Selected entries may be featured on the blueway Web site, www.calusablueway.com, and on Lee County Parks & Recreation’s Web site, www.leeparks.org. Winning photos may also be published in newspapers, magazines or online.

Winners will be announced at the fourth annual Calusa Blueway Paddling Festival, which runs Oct. 23-Nov. 1 throughout Lee County.

Submissions must be e-mailed as one high-resolution photo jpg attachment at a time to gulfspirit@... by Oct. 1, 2009. Only amateur photographers’ work will be accepted, with a maximum of three entries per person. Submissions do not require an entry fee. Entries must be accompanied with photographer’s name, address, phone number, e-mail address, and title and location of photo. Only photos shot in Lee County will be accepted. A model release form is available at www.CalusaBluewayPaddlingFestival.com if a person in the submitted photo is identifiable.

The paddling trail is 190 miles long and is marked by easily identifiable trail signs.  The trail is also mapped out with Global Positioning Coordinates.  The waterways are shallow and stay relatively free from powerboat traffic.  The Calusa Blueway Pad dling Festival is the Sunshine State’s premiere eco- and paddling event.

Seven paddlers went out and 6 & 7/8ths returned. It was a beautiful day on Estero Bay, we found some passages and did not find others. I will suggest that anyone going out early from the Mound House call the City of FMB and confirm that someone will open the gate, as they seem to be rather lax about the timing. We had no casualties and no fatalities. Overall it was a wonderful day, good company and calm waters. Darby

Hi Chris. re varnishing kayak. I have built three wood cedar strip kayaks and
one now under construction. It is important to sand the surface for a
mechanical adhesion. I have used various marine uv inhibited varnish
products. However to end up with no runs it is necessary to thin with the correct
thinner for that varnish. The varish is applied in thin coats. If using a brush.
The action used with the brush will be similar to a landing and takeoff of an
airplane with the grain of the wood. Then Baby sit your work watching for any
runs to develope and they can be lightly brushed out or removed carefully with
something like a razor blade when the varnish is dry. Hope this is helpful.

Don’t rely on other paddlers to protect your pocket books and the registration issue. Please show up at the meetings, or write of your concerns to the FWCC. And keep in mind, some of their staff want our dollars. So don't appear too "needy" to justify their registration agenda.

Subject: FWC Listening Sessions Update

Dear Paddlers,
In the past two weeks FWC has met with the Villages, Space Coast, and West Florida Paddle clubs. The next club meetings are June 2 at the Jacksonville Seakayaking Club and June 8 they'll be at the Tampa Bay Seakayakers. Reports from club meetings indicate a rumbling of the mandatory education issue (which would hurt tourism throughout the state) and non-motorized vessel registration. If you plan on attending any of the club meetings, check with them first, to make sure non-members are welcome. FWC wants to hear what paddlers want and/or need so they can pursue registration for the funds to fulfill those "needs" and/or "education". Too often at boating meetings the major complaints from the motorized boat community is that paddlers get a free ride and need to be educated. But registration funds would go into a general fund, for the boating community at large, there is no guarantee that the funds would be used directly for paddler needs.
Listening Sessions for general public:

If you have any questions for FWC regarding the sessions please email  Listeningsession@... . Sorry, no name is given as to address concerns to.
If you need more info from FPPA or don't want updates, just let me know.

Previous message:
Dear fellow outfitters and paddlers: FWC has already started a series meetings/listening sessions with paddle clubs around the state in regard to paddler issues. Becky Bragg with FPPA has made a request for info on the paddle club meetings but has been unable to secure the itinerary of the clubs meetings despite requests to FWC. Will publish paddle club meeting dates if they are shared otherwise we strongly suggest everyone go to a least one of the below sessions. If you are involved with a paddle club, try to make the paddle meeting if you find out about it.
According to the FAQ link at the bottom of the announcement that these sessions are not related to non-motorized vessel registration, we need to keep a close eye on this. In these economic times, why wouldn't they be looking for more money? With all the state government budget cuts, FWC has the money for these face to face meetings? Be warned, non-motorized vessel registration supporters are gearing up for another round at registration for paddlers.
Please help spread the word!
See you on the river.

This is a picture record of our trip to Solomons, MD and the opening gala of the "Wild Things" exhibit where my "Green Turtle Descending" painting is being dispayed for the summer. The kayaker and swimmer were part of a race from the Virginia side of the Potomac River to the MD side. Each swimmer (there were 30) had a kayaker companion. Neat group of people!

Hi everyone,

1) I forgot to mention to bring a light to moonlight paddle Saturday,  don't want everyone bumping into one another  (meet at Koreshan park by 6:30pm).  Hope it stops raining in time, the Estero River looks its best by moonlight.

2) Sunday I've signed up for a paddle around Cockroach Bay (this side of the Sunshine Bridge) with one of Don Thompson's Tours, cost is $25 if you have your own kayak and Don supplies lunch.  In case anyone else is interested in this trip I've copied details below.  Again this is not a free trip.  You must RSVP to Don if you are coming.

Fantastic tides will help us this day.  We should have nearly 3 feet above mean low about noon.   We'll paddle around Camp Key, Paradise Key, Snake Key, Hallelujah Keys, Shell Key, and the ever popular Dung Key. This area includes numerous mangrove islands which provide nursery areas for snook, red drum, and other game fish. Submerged habitats there include sea grass beds, hard bottom, and oyster reefs. And, archaeological sites indicate the importance of this area to pre-Columbian Native Americans. (Can you tell that I did not write this part.) Come and enjoy it with us.

The other reason to bring a light is because it's the law.

From COLREGS (International rules that apply once past the mouth of rivers):

"2. A vessel under oars may exhibit the lights prescribed in this Rule for sailing vessels, but if she does not, she shall have ready at hand an electric torch or lighted lantern showing a white light which shall be exhibited in sufficient time to prevent collision."

And from the US Dept of Homeland Security (where they moved the Coast Guard)"

"A vessel under oars may exhibit the lights prescribed in this rule for sailing vessels, but if she does not, she shall have ready at hand an electric torch or lighted lantern showing a white light which shall be exhibited in sufficient time to prevent collision."

So if you want to wear a cylume stick or some other marker light, that's fine, but be sure you have a proper flashlight (waterproof is a good idea) that can "be exhibited in sufficient time to prevent collision." There can be boat traffic on that river after sunset so in addition to being the law, it's a dang good idea too.

Subject: FWC Listening Sessions

Liz,
Yes, I will get something posted on the FPTA web site in the next several days.

Upon thinking about it I think that the FWC is mis-playing their attempt to get additional funds by getting paddle boat registration passed.  And please don't have anyone send me an email telling me that this is not where you guys are going.  Let's look at the facts:
·     You and every other state organization is under tremendous budget pressure.
·     The FWC bosses have been told to make their department as revenue neutral as possible (income vs expenses).  Why else would you choose this time to "listen to paddlers" when you have never done this before.
·     Someone came up with the following strategy to get some money from paddlers:
o       Hold listening sessions to see what paddlers want (they will come up with some new things).
o      Hold workshops to rank the most important new things.
o      Gee, if they want new things done, how are we going to pay for this?  The only way that the FWC knows is to charge a registration for paddle boats - for which hopefully you might be able to get matching funds from the Federal Govt.

I believe the FWC's indirect and misleading approach (watch this hand and the other will bap you in the back of your head) will not work.  I really think that you guys need to reconsider your approach, with everyone knowing up front that you are looking for more revenue and with paddlers giving you input on what that approach should be, not sneaking it in at the end when we will feel like we have been "had".

Hank

Hello all

Kerplunk day last summer was a real blast so we decided to repeat it. It is not
to force anyone to do anything that they do not want
to do.

As an outfitter, SWS is 100% focused on making all paddlers safer. We have found
that many people have never fallen out of their boats and are scared to death of
doing so. If you never get comfortable with this you will never learn to edge
and lean your boat and you will never realize the full potential of your kayak.
We will also cover rescues as well as rolls. What happens with that is that
those who choose to try a rescue are either surprised by how easy it is, or
surprised at how challenging it is. Dont ever assume that you can self rescue if
you've never tried it.

Here is what we will do;

1. Jay, Joseph and I will demonstrate a wet exit ( tipping your boat over, then
just getting out). first without a spray skirt then with a skirt. We will have
extra safety spotters around like Mike D.

2. Anyone who wishes to try a wet exit from their boat can do so with
supervision.

3. SWS will demonstrate a variety of 1 and 2 person rescues. Anyone who wishes
to try this with supervision can do so.

4. We will demonstrate a variety of rolls and then focus on the one that we
teach, which is Kent Fords low resistance roll. The is the easiest roll to learn
and the safest ergonomically.

Again this is a free event and everyone from PCPC is invited as well as our
friends at SWFLPC.

As MD said we will then eat.

Date:   Sunday June 14, 2009
Time:   10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Next reminder:   The next reminder for this event will be sent in 4 days.
Notes:   Sunday, 6/14/09 Launch Ponce de Leon Park, Punta Gorda 10am, we'll explore the creeks and maybe paddle Charlotte Harbor.
After the paddle we can all head for the Celtic Ray, Carey Parks plays there Sunday afternoons. Info Pat Owen 239-410-0167.

Both the pub and the park are on Marion Ave. It would be easier if the roads went straight and there were no one-way bits to them. Take 41 north from the Cape and turn on W Henry St. That turns into Marion, then follow it to the park. If you come up I-75 take US 17 West which is Marion and just keep going until you bump into the park.

On the way back, Marion is one-way westbound, so pass it up on Henry and take the next street, Olympia, which is one-way eastbound. Follow Olympia across 41 South and then across 41 North. Turn left on Nesbit at the first light (1 block east) of 41 North. The Celtic Ray is the red building on the corner of Marion. You can park on the street before the pub, or in the bank parking lot, or in the lot on the side of the pub a tad west on Marion.

http://tinyurl. com/CelticRay

As for the paddle, south there are a number of creeks that connect the harbor to the Punta Gorda Isles neighborhood. Some of these are used by fisherpersons to get to Alligator Creek, and some are too shallow for that. I don't know if any of the creeks from PGI to the harbor have weirs etc.

http://tinyurl. com/PonceCreeks

PFD's and skirts are recommended for the harbor. There can be inconsiderate boat traffic. But there are lots of places with skinny water too.

Shortest circumnav (from Google - there may be dams) is 2.9 mi. A longer one I'm sure of is 7.9 mi half in the harbor and half in the canals of PGI. We can see what the day offers.

This is a great boat for the entire family. There's plenty of room for an adult
and a child to sail together.
The curved gunnels are easy on the back of your legs and posterior. Junior
sailors can learn to sail on a rig just like a Laser.
These boats point well into the wind, are easy to right and are a blast to plane
on a beam reach. The boat is in very nice condition.
The colorful sail is is good shape with no tears or rips. Comes with a trailer.
The bearings were re-packed and the lights work.
